TORONTO -- The Toronto Maple Leafs didnt make it easy on themselves, but their losing streak is over. Michael Dickson Seahawks Jersey . Again they were badly outshot and a late penalty almost did them in, but Trevor Smith scored in overtime as Toronto beat the Dallas Stars 3-2 Thursday night at Air Canada Centre to end the skid at five games. Relief was the primary emotion after giving up 50 shots and winning for the first time since Nov. 23. "Im happy we won because there seems to be a lot of pressure on our group, and hopefully this helps flush some of the things that are going on out there that we can feel a little bit of room to breathe what we went through," coach Randy Carlyle said. "By no means that we think were out of the woods, but it feels good to win a hockey game." The Leafs (15-11-3) won in large part because goaltender Jonathan Bernier made 48 saves, including six in overtime before Smith beat Kari Lehtonen with 42 seconds to go before a shootout. Bernier conceded this did feel like a night during which he saw 50 shots and that it made him tired. All in a days work for a Leafs goaltender given that this was the 10th consecutive game they were outshot. Bernier called being outshot -- this time 44-22 in regulation and 50-24 total -- this teams "style." "My job is to go out there and give my team a chance to win," Bernier said. "I thought my last couple of games I wasnt very good. I needed to come here and play the way I can play and go shot-by-shot." Bernier earned first-star honours for his play, but his performance didnt shock Carlyle or his teammates. "Im not that impressed any more because hes done this night in and night out," said centre Nazem Kadri, who scored twice. "Its almost expected of him now. Hes been a great contributor to this team even throughout those tough stretches when they had us pinned in our end. Our goalie needs to make a couple big saves for us to get the win, and thats exactly what happened." Bernier earned praise from Stars coach Lindy Ruff. "I give their goalie a lot of credit. I give their team a lot of credit. They found a way to win," Ruff said. "Kudos to them." But even Bernier wasnt perfect. Erik Cole beat him with a goal on the rush early in the third period when the Leafs got caught on a bad line change, and then former Edmonton Oilers captain Shawn Horcoff tipped a shot in on the power play to tie the score late in regulation. Horcoff almost had a similar goal at the 9:42 mark of the third when he redirected a power-play point shot past Bernier. But the referees waved it off right away and video review upheld the no-goal call. "I was hoping theyd count it, but I felt like it was a little bit high," Horcoff said. "I knew the next one was OK." When Kadri scored his two goals of the night, there was no doubt. His first came thanks to some sharp passing from linemates Phil Kessel and James van Riemsdyk 58 seconds into the second period. Kadri added another, his ninth of the season, 6:58 into the third. He didnt grab that puck but did call Thursday night a "memory" because the game was dedicated to his late grandfather, who died earlier this week. "Its definitely something that he wouldve loved to see," Kadri said. "In the last couple years there hasnt been a game hes missed. Hes going to be dearly missed by our family." Kadri had no other choice but to return to hockey after missing Tuesday nights loss to the San Jose Sharks to attend his grandfathers funeral in London, Ont. When he came back, he was on the first line between van Riemsdyk and Kessel because Tyler Bozak is out indefinitely with an oblique strain. Another player who has made the most of his opportunity is Smith, who scored his fourth goal of the season 4:18 into overtime. Smith, who was named captain of the AHLs Toronto Marlies, was playing on what could be called the Leafs second line against the Stars (13-10-4). On a team thats lacking in secondary scoring and has grown accustomed to being outshot, Smith put two on net in regulation and then scored the winner. "Overtime, thats a lot of fun," Smith said. "Real exciting looking up at the crowd after scoring." It probably shouldnt have gotten to overtime. With the Leafs clinging to a 2-1 lead, their best penalty-killer, Jay McClement tripped up Tyler Seguin, who was returning after missing two games with a concussion. Horcoff scored with four seconds left on that penalty. It was the ninth power-play goal Toronto had given up in its past six games, including at least one each night. "Its a big part of when youre struggling and things not going your way as far as handling pucks and pressure," Carlyle said. "We were four seconds away, but we still had two chances to clear the puck. It would have been over. But that little bit of adversity hurt us for a period of time." Had the Stars managed to score again in regulation or overtime or win in a shootout, it would have hurt more. The losing streak was starting to take its toll. "We had to break it," Smith said. "We havent been playing well, and I dont think we put together 60 minutes at all tonight. But with Bernier playing over his head for us and giving us a chance to win, thats all we can ask for." Led by Bernier, Smith and Kadri, the Leafs go to Ottawa for Saturday nights rivalry game against the Senators unburdened by the pressure of this skid. "Hopefully they feel good in there and we can flush whats been going on because theres been a lot of things going on," Carlyle said. "And we just think that its time for this group to take a deep breath and lets go to work tomorrow and get ourselves ready for Saturday." NOTES -- The Leafs held a pre-game moment of silence to honour the death of Nelson Mandela. His name along with his dates of birth and death were put on the scoreboard along with a profile photo of the South African leader. ... Winger Jerry DAmigo, called up earlier in the day as the Leafs placed Bozak and enforcer Colton Orr on injured reserve and Jerred Smithson cleared waivers, made his NHL debut playing on the fourth line and finished with 4:02 of ice time. Stars defenceman Trevor Daley left the game with a lower-body injury after getting tangled up with van Riemsdyk on the play that led to Kadris first goal. Daleys left leg got caught up with the Leafs winger, and he slid into the boards. ... Defenceman Morgan Rielly was a healthy scratch for the Leafs as Cody Franson returned after missing three games with a lower-body injury. Dontae Johnson Seahawks Jersey . Kelli Stack and Alex Carpenter also scored for the Americans, who avoided a repeat of Finlands upset at the Four Nations Cup in Lake Placid, N.Y., in November. Finnish goalie Noora Raty made 58 saves in that one, but the three-time Olympian could stop just 40 of 43 U. Alex McGough Seahawks Jersey . Tyutin has missed the last nine games with an ankle injury which occurred while playing for Russia at the Olympics. The top-two defenceman has four goals and 20 assists, 30 penalty minutes and a plus-6 rating in 53 games with Columbus this season. The Miami Heat are reportedly highly interested in University of Connecticut point guard Shabazz Napier and are willing to move up in Thursdays NBA Draft to get him. According to ESPNs Chad Ford, the Heat are aggressively pursuing options to acquire a higher pick in order to draft Napier who is widely regarded as one top point guards in this years draft. Miami owns the 26th overall pick and Ford says its unlikely Napier will fall that far with the Orlando Magic (No. 12)), Atlanta Hawks (No. Michael Dickson Jersey. 15), Chicago Bulls (No. 16) and the Boston Celtics (No. 17) showing interest. LeBron James, who will become a free-agent on July 1 after opting out of his contract on Tuesday, has shown interest in Napier as well. He tweeted, "no way u take a PG in the lottery before Napier," during the NCAA title game between UConn and Kentucky in April. Acquiring Napier might help convince James to stay in South Beach. MILWAUKEE -- Cardinals starters are feeling right at home on the mound at Miller Park. Spurs Jerseys . A night after Lance Lynn shutout the Brewers, fellow hard-throwing right-hander Shelby Miller followed Tuesday by striking out seven and allowing three hits over six innings to lead St. Louis to a 6-1 win. Mark Ellis had two RBIs in his return from the disabled list, while Matt Holliday and Jhonny Peralta each hit solo shots in the ninth for the Cardinals, who handed Milwaukee its second straight loss following a nine-game winning streak. Miller (1-2) routinely fired fastballs clocked into the mid-90s past hitters before turning the game over to the bullpen in the seventh. He bounced back after starting the year with two losses and a 6.35 ERA in his first two starts. "That looks more like Shelby. The velocity was there," manager Mike Matheny said. Only Aramis Ramirez managed to break through off Miller hitting a solo homer in the fourth. "Sneaky fast. Hes throwing. Its not only sneaky ... he spots his fastball really well on the outside corner, inside," Ramirez said. "Hes going to come right at you, so weve got to make some adjustments." They didnt make enough of them Tuesday. The Brewers have just one run and six hits over the first two games of the three-game set with their NL Central rival. Marco Estrada (1-1) took the loss after allowing three runs over six innings. The right-hander, who was off to a good start with a 2.31 ERA entering Tuesday, had a little uncharacteristic trouble with his command. He hit a batter in the second, then issued a walk in the third to Matt Carpenter that set up Allen Craigs RBI double. Estrada also threw a wild pitch in the fourth, but did allow just five hits. "When they battle like that and keep the team in the ballgame, thats their job. Theyre not going to feel good every time out," manager Ron Roenicke said. It would have been more than adequate pitching during the Brewers long winning streak. But that was before Milwaukee had to face the aces from St. Louis. Lynn was in control Monday night after striking out 11 over seven innings. Miller was just as effective. He got Jean Segura to ground out to second and caught Ryan Braun looking on a 94 mph fastball to start the fourth. The only mistake was a fastball down the middle of the plate that Ramirez turned on for his second homer and team-best 12th RBI. Miller recovered nicely to end the fourth by getting Jonathan Lucroy to hit a one-hopper to first. Miller, who improved to 4-0 career against the Brewers, had a 2.03 career ERA against Milwaukee entering Tuesday. "A lot of power in that lineup. Really throughout the whole lineup is pretty solid, so the biggest thing you do is try and keep them off balance as much as possible," Miller said. The Cardinals had built a 3-0 lead by the top of the fourth to back Miller. After missing the seasons first 13 games with left knee tendinitis, Ellis made a nice debut by driving in a run in the second on a groundout, and another in the fourth off a sacrifice fly. "Mark did a great job -- all the little things we talk about," Matheny said. NOTES: Kolten Wong had started 12 of the teams first 13 games at second until Ellis rejoined the club. Manager Mike Matheny said he didnt necessarily have a plan on how he would split playing time. "We just watch how hes going, watch how Koltens going," Matheny said. "Realize that we have a very, very good option there at second base and just kind of take it day by day." ... The Cardinals were 8-1 on Tax Day since 2005 entering Tuesdays game. ... Brewers manager Ron Roenicke managed his 500th career game to become the sixth skipper in franchise history to reach that plateau with the organization. ... The teams wrap up the three-game set with a Wednesday matinee. The Cardinals Joe Kelly (1-0) will be opposed by the Brewers Wily Peralta (1-0) on the mound. Spurs T-shirts . -- Kansas City Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer will be out three to six weeks with a stress fracture of the third finger of his right hand. LaMarcus Aldridge Jersey . He will just have to wait a little longer. Bester grabbed an early lead before Scotlands Darren Burnett took over and ran away with the mens singles lawn bowling final 21-9 on Friday.PHILADELPHIA -- Buddy Carlyle had a memorable return to the big leagues. Now, he and his New York Mets teammates would like to get some rest. David Wright had an RBI single with two outs in the 14th inning and Carlyle, who was called up as an emergency arm prior to the game, tossed three scoreless extra innings to lead the Mets to a 5-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in the second straight marathon game between the teams. New York needed 5 hours, 32 minutes to win this one after losing to the Phillies 6-5 in a 14-inning game Friday night that took 5:23 to complete. "It feels good just coming back," said Carlyle, who has spent the majority of his 16-year professional career in the minor leagues. "Its a lot of work to get back. I wasnt sure if Id get another opportunity to play at the major league (level). It just feels good to contribute." Carlyle (1-0) last pitched in the major leagues in 2011 and last earned a victory on June 25, 2008. He was in El Paso, Texas on Friday night pitching for the Mets Triple-A Las Vegas club when he received a call at 11 oclock summoning him to Philadelphia after New York used eight pitchers on Friday. The right-hander said he slept "maybe a couple of hours" before boarding a 6 a.m. flight, arriving at Citizens Bank Park at 2:30 for the 3:05 scheduled first pitch. The Phillies and Mets have played 37 innings in three games with two more still to play in the rare five-game series. The Mets went without a hit in extra innings until Wrights knock off Antonio Bastardo (3-3). Bastardo walked Ruben Tejada to start the 14th, and Tejada went to second on Juan Lagares sacrifice bunt. After Daniel Murphy popped out, Wright lined a single to left to score Tejada. "David Wright was in a big spot and got a big hit," Mets manager Terry Collins said. Carlos Torres worked out of a jam in the bottom of the 14th to earn his second save in three chances. The Phillies put runners on first and second with no outs, but Torres struck out Ben Revere, got Jimmy Rollins to pop out and struck out Chase Utley. "The only thing we know is we won, dont ask me how," Collins joked. "There are a lot of tired bodies out there." Carlyle, who travelled much of Saturday just to make the game, knows he isnt the only tired one. "Probably every pitcher is just as exhausted as I am," he said. Tejada had three hits, includding a homer, with two RBIs for the Mets, who won their fourth in five games. George Gervin Jersey. . Ryan Howard hit a three-run homer for Philadelphia, which tied the game in the ninth on Domonic Browns RBI single. Phillies reliever Jeff Manship pitched four hitless extra innings, striking out six, and wouldve come out for the 14th but he strained his right quadriceps trying to beat out a grounder in the 13th. It was the second at-bat for Manship, as Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg was limited to just one bench player and was trying to preserve Philadelphias bullpen. "I was feeling real good pitching," Manship said. "Its definitely an outing to build on, but its just frustrating the way it ended. I was going to do anything I could to get a hit there." Brown singled off Jeurys Familia, who blew his first save in his second opportunity. But then both teams had trouble generating offence. Carlyle didnt allow a hit in the 11th or 12th. Browns ninth-inning hit prevented Mets starter Jacob deGrom from earning his first career victory. DeGrom has pitched well in all four of his starts, owning a 2.42 ERA, but is 0-2. He was in line for the win after striking out 11 in 6 1-3 strong innings before Familia blew the save. The Mets were in control of the game with a 4-0 lead until Howards homer in the seventh. Bobby Abreu and Lucas Duda had RBI hits in the first to help the Mets jump to a 2-0 lead. Tejada put New York in front 3-0 with a rare show of power, clearing the fence in left for his third career homer in 1,342 career at-bats. New York tacked on a run in the sixth on Tejadas single. All of four of the Mets early runs came off Kyle Kendrick, who is 1-10 over his last 18 starts dating to Aug. 11. Kendrick allowed eight hits while striking out five and walking two. Howards homer gave him 1,000 career RBIs. He reached the milestone in 1,230 games. Curtis Granderson broke an 0 for 22 skid with a ninth-inning single. NOTES: Reid Brignac went 0 for 5 with four strikeouts. ... To make room for Carlyle, the Mets sent starter Rafael Montero to Triple-A. ... Lagares was a late scratch from the starting lineup due to a strained rib cage. Chris Young led off and started in centre in his place. ... Former Phillies right-hander Roy Oswalt threw out the ceremonial first pitch. ... Mets LHP Jonathon Niese (3-3, 2.74) opposes Phillies LHP Cole Hamels (1-3, 4.43) at 1:35 Sunday. EDMOND, Okla. Michal Neuvirth Flyers Jersey . -- Several years ago, a rare skin disorder left Gene Sauers unsure if he would survive. Now he has a chance to win the U.S. Senior Open. Sauers crept up on the field and shot a 3-under 68 on Saturday to take a three-stroke lead after three rounds at Oak Tree National. He moved to 7 under, passing front-runners Bernhard Langer, Scott Dunlap and Colin Montgomerie along the way. The journey to this opportunity is what makes Sundays final round extra special for the 51-year-old Sauers. He said a reaction to a wrongly prescribed medication caused Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a disorder that burned the skin on his arms and legs from the inside out. While he was in the hospital for seven weeks recovering, he pictured his golf swing. He got out of the hospital in June 2011 and eventually returned to the course. "The good Lord said Im going to give you another chance," Sauers said. "Bogey doesnt matter that much anymore. Thats when I learned to have a great time and tried to hit everything I was capable of doing, and it worked out today." Langer and Dunlap are tied for second at 4 under. Montgomerie is another stroke back in fourth. It looked as if Montgomerie might run away from the field early on in the third round. He opened with birdies on Nos. 1 and 3 to jump out to a four-shot lead over Langer, who by then had moved from third to second. Langer remained steady and Montgomerie bogeyed Nos. 5 and 7. Heading into the back nine, Mongomeries lead was just one shot. Then Sauers got going. He had a 33 on the back nine, including birdies on Nos. 12, 16 and 18, to take control heading into the final round. It was an impressive run for someone who hasnt placed higher than 15th in a Champions Tour event this season. "Ive got some help back home," Sauers said. "Some friends and some teachers have been helping me a little bit. Theyve got me hitting the ball solid now. Building my confidence is mainly what they do. They know I still have it. You know, its just -- go out there and do it. Try not to put too much pressure on myself and try to have fun." Montgomerie shot a 74 after leading at the end of the first two days. He was 3 over on the back nine, but is confident he can regain some of his earlier touch. "I will try to do what I did Thursday with a 65," he said. "If I can do it Thursday, I can do it Sunday. If I can hit it in the fairway, I can play to the strength of my game, which is the iron game." Langer, who has three wins this season on the Champions Tour, was solid, but had several potential birdies just miss during his even-par 71. "Sometimes they lip in, sometimes they lip out," he said. "It was frustrating. I played really good golf on the back nine, the last nine holes, had a lot of chances, lot of opportunities and I think I had four lip-outs or something and left one short on 18 and could have easily been three better but could have, should have, would have doesnt count in this game." Langer isnt conceding yet. "I played pretty solid golf for three days in a row and the putter was hot yesterday," he said. "Wasnt so hot today, but, you know, well see what happens tomorrow. Weve still got 18 holes to go. Its a lot of golf left, and anything can happen." Marco Dawson, who shot a 76 on Friday, rebounded with a 69 on Saturday. He left Friday disappointed and saying he was unsure how to play the course. On Saturday, he was 1 over through six, and then got on a torrid stretch that included birdies on Nos. 7, 8, 10, 12, 13 and 15 to move into a tie for the lead at 5 under. Dawson bogeyed Nos. 16, 17 and 18 to fall to 2 under. He is tied for fifth with Jeff Sluman and Vijay Singh. Dawson said he expects it to be tough to get good scores on Sunday because the course will continue to dry out in near 100-degree heat. "Unless somebody just gets really hot with the putter and gets some good bounces, you know, the best score may be 4, 5 under tomorrow," he said. Mark Streit Flyers Jersey . It was the start of one nice night for the goalie and the Minnesota Wild. Backstrom made 33 saves in his first win of the season and the Wild defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 5-3 on Saturday in a rematch of their first-round playoff series. Dave Schultz Flyers Jersey .1 Sam Stosur will meet Germanys second-ranked player Andrea Petkovic in the opening match of the Fed Cup World Group semifinal. The Eskimos did a smart thing this week and signed veteran CFL receiver Paris Jackson this week. He was signed to help with depth to the receiving corps because of the loss of Shamawd Chambers to the 6-game injured list. Losing starters and especially National starters is difficult to overcome and to try to get the same level of productivity in the position. That is why it is so important for teams to have as much depth as possible at National positions. Like all teams in the CFL, the Eskimos have had their share of injuries to deal with this season. They have faced some serious National challenges pertaining to roster depth at the defensive line. In addition to losing Chambers, they lost starting defensive lineman Don Oramasionwu early in the season as well as Eddie Steele and Gregory Alexandre in last Fridays loss to Saskatchewan. That is why they had to sign defensive lineman Bo Adebayo from Montreals practice roster to provide help and depth on the defensive line. Paris Jackson has been released twice in the past year, first by B.C. and then by Ottawa, an expansion club trying to find their way in the first season. He had only six catches for 34 yards in three games with the Redblacks before he was relegated to a backup role. He eventually was released because Ottawa probably felt comfortable with the young receivers they had and did not need to have a higher than average salary for a backup. Another difficult thing for general managers to decide is that after the ninth game, the salaries of CFL veterans are guaranteed, meaning if you were to cut them and send them home, they would still be paid and would count against your cap. So why sign a 34-year-old player who couldnt make the starting lineup of the Ottawa Redblacks? Why not put a younger player on the roster and let him develop instead of an older player with a short shelf life? This is a question I hear a lot and want to take the time to talk about why it is so important to have a veteran presence on your roster, especially at the end of the year. At this time in the season, there is probably not a lot of young talented National receivers on the practice squads of other teams or at home waiting for a call. Because of the attrition of the season, the expansion of the CFL rosters by the Redblacks, plus one more non-import on each team, finding available Nationals is difficult. Many people I talk to say there is as little depth as they have ever seen that is not on rosters already at National spots. But for me, the most important and best part of what I hope Paris will bring to the Eskimos is experience; experience in the position he is playing, experience in the stadiums in the division, experience in the meeting rooms, experience in the locker room. There is no substitute for guys who have been in games and know what to do in as many situations as they can remember. Coach Dave Ritchie, my former boss in Winnipeg in 2002 and 2003, used to say that you lose a game for every rookie that you start. He believed they would make mistakes because of a lack of experience that would cause you to lose a game. As a receiver, Paris should have a great understanding of the cadence in the CFL and more importantly, the Waggle, where receivers run towards the line of scrimmage. I cannot tell you how that can be limiting and how difficult it can be for rookie receivers. I would think you would have less of a chance of Paris being offside than someone who has little or no experience with the waggle. Paris understands the contact that is allowed by defensive backs downfield and will know how to counter it. I cant tell you how many rookie receivers are amazed when a defensive back collides with them 10 yards downfield and dont know how to counter it. Many pass concepts are similar in the CFL, so Paris will have to learn the Eskimos terminology but he should have an general understanding of the role of each receiver in the concepts and what they are trying to accomplish. Players with experience at any position understand that the ball can be punched out of bounds to recover a fumble. They understand most of the rules pertaining to the kicking game as well as what will get you a penalty on and off the field. The Eskimos, who have positioned themselves nicely in a battle for the division title, need guys who can come in and be productive but not make the crucial self-destructive mistakes like penalties or not understanding what to do on a given play. When I was the head coach in Winnipeg, I struggled and always lost in arguments with the general managers insistence to never sign players from other teams. He believed in signing rookies and rookies alone would be the way we would fix any roster issues and or injury problems. That is why we always had the younngest team in the CFL each year. Wayne Simmonds Flyers Jersey. Often times, he would say why do we want a guy who was not good enough to play for them? A couple of reasons: one, they understand the rules and systems of the CFL and two, they may be a better fit for our roster than the team that released him. Some guys may be better than what we have on the roster, which is not what the GM wanted to hear but was sometimes true. What the general manager did not understand is that rookie receivers may be faster on the stopwatch when you are scouting them running down a line. A slower veteran will play faster most times in the game because he knows what to do and what he is doing so those guys can play faster than rookies and the QBs will trust the veterans because they are in the right spot at the right time. Many players are excelling in the league today with very average 40 times. Another example during my time as head coach in Winnipeg involved signing a rookie International defensive lineman early in the 2012 season over several options that had CFL experience. This player not only had not played in the CFL, he never had played defensive lineman. He was a linebacker who we moved to defensive line. This player did not have a training camp to learn the fundamentals of the position of DL or to learn the rules of the CFL. He was thrown into a very difficult position to be successful, especially early on and also the position coach who had to try to groom a LB on how to play defensive line was also put in a position you normally dont do in professional football; that is teach a player a position he never has played before. True to form, we had an injury at the defensive line and the player had to start the next week with only four days of practice. He struggled for two or three weeks with lining up offsides, having not had a lot of experience with the yard off the ball. He took three penalties in his first game just lining up offsides. The general manager was frustrated by the penalties and would try to say it was the coachs fault for not explaining that to him or my fault for not teaching him about it. We actually kept track of offsides daily and did extra work when we went offside in practice but these things will happen to young inexperienced players and the best way for them to learn is through game experiences alone. That is how the player will get better at the position, game reps alone. At this point in the season, teams like the Eskimos dont want to have players who have to be taught everything and may make mistakes if they get in a game. It is the push to first place so they need players with experience. The right veteran players should understand how to conduct themselves in the meeting rooms and within the team atmosphere. Some rookies come up and have different priorities than doing what is best for the team, day in and day out. It is an adjustment being in a new city, getting attention as a professional football player, being able to do what you want when away from the facility. Some rookies cannot handle that, so when you sign a veteran, you are getting someone who has maneuvered through all those things before and you hope can provide the role that he is needed on the team. Role is a big word in organized football and lastly, one that I think players with experience understand. I believe that Paris Jackson will know his role and do his job. Do your job and your job alone and you can have a very successful team and a successful career individually. I am sure or I hope that Paris is not thinking about taking catches away from Adarius Bowman and Fred Stamps and thinking about how he can help the team win. He has been through the starter to backup role before and should know how to handle it. I am sure the Eskimos did there due diligence and spoke to people about how he handled himself in those roles. I am sure it helps that his former teammate Jarious Jackson is on the coaching staff. In 2009, when I was the offensive coordinator in Saskatchewan, I replaced Jason Clermont on the roster with Chris Getzlaf early in the year as Chris was playing very well. Jason was a veteran football player and handled it like a true professional and the players in our meeting room had all the respect in the world for him. He continued to be a positive force in our push to the Grey Cup. He would help us in games down the stretch and, when he got opportunities to play, he would make plays and could be counted on. As the Eskimos prepare for the home stretch, it is great to see that Paris Jackson is getting an opportunity to help them in their search for the Grey Cup. I am sure that he will do his best to help the team in any way possible. His 11 years of experience will be of use for the Eskimos during the stretch run. "But I still feel strong, I feel sharp. So hopefully at some point Ill get called up (again). How I feel at the minute, Im still ready to play and score goals for my country." The 31-year-old Defoe, who has 19 goals in 55 appearances for his country, was named to Englands 30-man World Cup roster but did not make the final 23. At the time, he said he was devastated by the snub. England (0-2-1) finished last in Group D behind Costa Rica, Uruguay and Italy, managing to score just two goals. "Spain are out, Italy are out," Defoe said. "Some big nations are out but obviously it would have been nice to see (England) progress to the later stage of the tournament. But it wasnt meant to be. A lot of young players, they still have opportunities again to play in tournaments and Im sure theyll do well. But this year it wasnt meant to be. It was a tough group." England captain Steven Gerrard and vice-captain Frank Lampard have said they will take some time to ponder their international future. Veteran fullback Ashley Cole opted to retire prior to the tournament. Veteran midfielder Michael Carrick was also left out of the England squad. "I think its a change," Defoe said, "because obviously theres so many young players coming through — good young players. Obviously theyre inexperienced but theyll get experience with games and I suppose thats what the manager wanted to do when he left me out, Michael Carrick, Ashley Cole, hhe wanted to go with the younger players. Lorenzen Wright Jersey. . "Hopefully theyll do well but its going to be a massive change ... but well see what happens." Meanwhile, Defoe said he did not take offence at former manager Harry Redknapp saying some of his England players at Spurs had tried to shirk national team duty. Current England manager Roy Hodgson and Gerrard both said Defoe should not be tarred with that brush. "Its difficult for me (to react) because Im not one those players," said Defoe. "Ive never missed a squad and obviously I dont know who those players are. At the end of the day, when youre playing for your country, its the greatest honour ... I always turned out for my country, even if I was half fit." Gerrard urged Redknapp to name names but the veteran manager, who now runs Queens Park Rangers, said it would not be fair to the players in question. Defoe was one of a dozen England players at Tottenham during Redknapps tenure. Toronto manager Ryan Nelsen, a former New Zealand international who played under Redknapp, said he thought the comments might have been taken somewhat out of context. Nelsen, who captained the All Whites, said he would be outraged if anyone suggested he didnt love playing for his country. But he said theres give and take when it comes to club versus country, acknowledging he had asked not to be picked for some friendlies when they were largely commercial ventures on the other side of the globe and they bumped heads with major club clashes. While he had hoped to be playing in Brazil, Defoe welcomed the MLS break during the group stage of the World Cup. Toronto gave its players eight days off following the 1-0 win over San Jose on June 7. Still he admitted to having "itchy feet," wanting to get back to playing. Toronto (6-4-1) returns to action Friday in New York against the Red Bulls (4-5-6). Nelsens only injury concerns are winger Daniel Lovitz (concussion) and Brazilian striker Gilberto (hip flexor). I am proud of my accomplishments in Sochi and my world championship titles, but I do feel that there is still more that I can achieve. I will return to competition having learned new ways of training and preparing from this year off.Chan, 23, had a glorious opportunity to become Canadas first Olympic mens figure skating champion last February in Sochi, but struggled in his free skate and settled for silver behind Japans Yuzuru Hanyu. He also helped Canada win silver in the inaugural team event.Chan did not try to win a fourth straight world title earlier this year. He skipped the event in Japan and Hanyu took gold there as well. The seven-time Canadian mens champion will continue to work with Kathy Johnson from his training base in Detroit. Although eligible, he has declined Spoort Canada and Own the Podium funding, allowing other athletes to benefit from the financial assistance. Daryl Worley Raiders Jersey. The Toronto skater has been working on a new free program, choreographed by David Wilson to a Chopin medley. The program will be revealed this week when Chan skates with the North American team at this weeks Japan Open invitational event in Saitama. This program uses very contemporary movements in my skating, Chan said. Im taking the time to enjoy building out the program and working on the flow of the artistry. And Im experimenting with different things in my training cycle, without feeling that same intensity to do full run-throughs of each program every day that I felt building to the Olympics.Chan hopes that taking a year away from competition will help him when he returns in 2015.Im learning how to accomplish the same results from a more relaxed, less intense training regimen that I feel will help me going forward next year, he said.Chan is also slated to perform exhibition programs with Stars on Ice and is planning to participate in other activities including An Evening with Scott Hamilton & Friends Ice Show & Gala in Cleveland and Skatemania in Quebec City. BESANCON, France -- With defending champion Chris Froome and two-time winner Alberto Contador out of the race, the path is wide open for Vincenzo Nibali to become the first Italian to win the Tour de France since the late Marco Pantani in 1998. Cornellius Carradine Jersey . The French have waited even longer for a champion -- the last was Bernard Hinault way back in 1985 -- but with three riders in the top six places, hopes are growing of at least a first podium place since climber Richard Virenque finished second in 1997. After Tuesdays rest day, the race resumes with Stage 11 on Wednesday, followed by arduous mountain stages on Friday and Saturday which will reveal the genuine contenders. These are where Nibalis climbing skills could set him apart, and give him a chance to fully stamp his authority on the race. There are five days of hard climbing ahead, starting with Fridays 197.5-kilometre (122.4-mile) trek from Saint-Etienne to Chamrousse, which ends with a huge ascent of 18 kilometres (11.2 miles). As for Nibalis rivals, Contador broke his shin in a violent fall in Mondays 10th stage and Froome pulled out on stage 5 with a broken wrist. "Im not happy about what happened to Alberto and Chris," the 29-year-old Nibali said. "The climbs would have been better and more spectacular for everyone." Nibali, who won the Spanish Vuelta in 2010 and the Giro dItalia in 2013, is 2 minutes, 23 seconds ahead of Australian Richie Porte and 2:47 clear of Spaniard Alejandro Valverde, who won the Vuelta five years ago. Three Frenchmen are within four minutes of Nibali -- Romain Bardet, Tony Gallopin and Thibaut Pinot. None has come close to a podium place on a Grand Tour, although the 23-year-old Bardet and the 24-year-old Pinot have strong climbing skills. "Weve got to stay calm and study the situation," Nibali said. "The danger can come from anywhere." Porte rode as a key support rider for Froome last year on the Sky team, but now has free reign to attack. "Porte goes well in the climbs, he goes well in time trials, you have to keep a good distance on him," Nibali said. "You have to watch Valverde, he can attack at any time." The 34-year-old Valverde was handed a two-year suspension in 2010 for his involvement in the Operation Puerto doping plot, which involved dozens of riders over secretly stored blood bags. Like Nibali, Pantani was a courageous cyclist who loved to attack in the tough climbs. Pantani was found dead in a hotel room on Valentines Day in 2004 and a coroner ruled he died from cocaine poisoning. Nibali has one of Pantinis yellow jerseys at home, a gift from Pantinis mother to mark the 10th anniversary of his death. "It would be a great honour to follow on from him," said Nibali. Fridays stage will also be special for Nibali because it marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of two-time Tour champion Gino Bartali, who died in 2000 at the age of 85. "As an Italian, its a huge privilege to be asked about Bartali. I grew up watching documentaries on the big riders, the big wins of (Felice) Gimondi, Bartali and (Fausto) Coppi," Nibali said. "Theyre all in the encyclopedia of cycling. There are others like Hinault, too. Theyve written the history of cycling." The last French heyday came in the 1980s when Hinault, a five-time champion, competed against Laurent Fignon, who won in 83 and 84. Wednesdays stage is a 187.5-kilometre (116.3-mile) route in eastern France from Besancon to Oyonnax and features four small climbs. Veteran Fabian Cancellara wont be among the starters. The 33-year-old Swiss cyclist has pulled out to focus on the Road World Championships in Ponferrada, Spain, from Sept. 21-28. Cancellara withdrew prior to the start of the 11th Tour stage in 2012. Tahir Whitehead Jersey . Dane Dobbie had four goals and two assists, Karsen Leung had two goals and two assists, and Matthew Dinsdale scored two and helped on another for Calgary (6-3). Shawn Evans and Jeff Shattler had eight-point games with a goal and seven assists apiece, and Jon Harnett and Geoff Snider also scored. Martavis Bryant Jersey . -- Wichita State is all alone in the record book. The Buffalo Sabres will retire the jersey of goaltender Dominik Hasek next season. Hasek was the fifth and final player to wear No. 39 in a Sabres uniform and he will become the seventh player in franchise history to have a number retired. The Sabres are set to induct Hasek into the franchises Hall of Fame on Saturday. Hasek was acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks in the summer of 1992, and went on to become one of the premier players in the NHL until the end of the decade. Upon his departure from the Sabres in 2001, he owned the club records for most games played (491), wins (234), shutouts (55) and lowest career goals-against average (2.22). During the 1997-98 season, he appeared in a career-high 72 games and set a team record with 13 shutouts, then led to the team to the Stanley Cup Finals in the sprinng of 1999 after a season in which he had a career-best 1. Tahir Whitehead Raiders Jersey. 87 GAA. The Czech native, while with the Sabres, became the first goaltender in NHL history to win the Hart Trophy in back-to-back seasons (1997-98). He also captured six Vezina Trophies (1994-95, 1997-99 and 2001) as well as the William M. Jennings Trophy (1994, 2001) and the Lester B. Pearson Award twice (1997, 98). Seven of his 10 All-Star selections occurred while he starred for Buffalo. He went on to win a pair of Stanley Cup titles for Detroit in four seasons with the Red Wings and also played for Ottawa. The Sabres previously retired the No. 11 of Gilbert Perreault in 1990, Rick Martins No. 7 and Rene Roberts No. 14 in 1995, the No. 2 of Tim Horton in 1996, Danny Gares No. 18 in 2005 and Pat LaFontaines No. 16 in 2006. ST. Tramaine Brock Jersey . LOUIS -- Coach Jeff Fisher says the St. Louis Rams are not shopping quarterback Sam Bradford to make room for former Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel. Fisher said Tuesday the team held private workouts for 45 players, including Manziel. He said the team also worked out offensive tackle Jake Matthews and wide receiver Mike Evans at Texas A&M. Fisher says the Rams are confident Bradford will make a complete comeback from knee surgery that cut short his season in 2013, and a deal involving the No. 1 pick of the 2010 draft was "highly unlikely." The Rams have two picks in the first round Thursday: No. 2 overall from the Redskins and No. 13. Fisher said the team had a group of six to eight players in mind for the second pick. NEW ORLEANS - Tyreke Evans countered Phoenixs three-guard lineup with several big plays of his own. Kendall Fuller Jersey .Evans scored 24 points, including eight straight for New Orleans in the final 2 minutes, and the Pelicans held off Phoenix 110-106 on Tuesday night to stop the Suns winning streak at six games.Evans showcased his ability to take advantage of smaller defenders by getting to the rim. Other times, he set his feet for jump shots. Both troubled the Suns, who dominated the Pelicans last season.Thats the style we like to play, said Evans, who shot 8 of 20 from the field. I play like that most of the time.Anthony Davis had 19 points with a season-high 18 rebounds, and Jrue Holiday scored 17 of his 21 points in the second half. Ryan Anderson (19 points) converted three of four 3-pointers.I think our guys got a lot of energy from this city tonight, and thats what Ive been trying to explain to our fan base since Ive been here, said Pelicans coach Monty Williams, now in his fifth season. To get that many people in our arena cheering for our guys down the stretch, knocking down buckets and getting stops, and have our people cheer for us gives our guys a good boost. The Pelicans made their last eight free throws after hitting only 10 of their previous 21 attempts. Evans was 7 of 10 overall.Just as important was Dante Cunninghams steal of Goran Dragics pass with 1:10 left and the Pelicans leading 102-100.Cunningham jumped in front of an entry pass intended for Markieff Morris, leading to Evans jumper with 49.9 left. After a layup by Suns guard Eric Bledsoe, Evans added a layup over Phoenixs smaller lineup. The improving Pelicans (16-15) moved one game closer to the eighth spot in the Western Conference standings currently occupied by the Suns (18-15).Obviously, we dont want to talk about playoffs, but when it comes down to playoffs, this is big, Holiday said. We did not beat them at all last season. When it came down to the wire, it was our night.Dragic led Phoenix with 22 points. Bledsoe added 21, and Gerald Green scored 15 of his 17 in the first half.Tyreke was not going to shoot it, but we knew he was going to drive it, Green said. Hes pretty crafty and we didnt do a good job on him.The Pelicans led by as many as 14 in the first quarter, paced by a quick start from Evans, who went 5 for 10 in the period.Phoenixs 15-4 run midway through the third gave the Suns a 77-73 lead before Evans paced a late Pelicans rally. When you give a team a lot of confidence in their shooting, you give up easy, Suns coach Jeff Hornacek said.___TIP-INSSuns: Phoenixs loss ended a four-game winning streak against New Orleans. "I think every single guy, if they look at that game, theyll say Yes, I could have done more. We have to fix that," captain Will Johnson said. Newcomer Gaston Fernandez scored on a header in stoppage time to give the Timbers the 1-all draw against the re-tooled Union on Saturday night. The goal in the 93rd minute got past goalkeeper Zac MacMath in driving rain, and the Timbers stole three points from the Union, who got a goal in the 64th minute from Jack McInerney. The Timbers went 14-15-5 last season to finish atop the Western Conference. Portland advanced to the conference finals in the playoffs, losing to Real Salt Lake. First-year coach Caleb Porter was named MLS Coach of the Year for guiding his team to a 23-game turnaround from the previous season. "The coach in me is always looking down the road and how we can get better," Porter said after the opener. "But I am happy we pulled out the point." Portlands 15 draws last season were the most in the league since 2011. The Union went 12-12-10 last season, finishing seventh in the Eastern Conference and missing the playoffs for the second straight year. But Philadelphia looked like a new team in the opener, pressuring the Timbers from the start. After a scoreless first half, McInerney, with help from newcomer Maurice Edu, headed the ball past Ricketts off a corner from Cristian Maidana in the 64th minute. It was the 25th goal of McInerneys career. He had 12 goals last season for the Union. "To give one up in injury time is a tough way to lose a couple of points, but Portlands a really good team, so youve got to think theres a lot to build on frrom that game," Union coach John Hackworth said. Dorian ODaniel Chiefs Jersey. Philadelphias off-season moves were headlined by the addition of Edu, acquired from English Premier League side Stoke City in late January. The Union also added Maidana and traded for Austin Berry. Unlike the Union, the nucleus of the Timber remained largely intact, including Goalkeeper of the Year Donavan Ricketts, top scorer and Newcomer of the Year Diego Valeri and All-Star Will Johnson, the teams captain. Portland added Fernandez and defender Norberto Paparatto, both of Argentina. Porter called Fernandezs goal in the opener important for his acclimation to the team. "Its big. I think part of scoring goals is confidence," Porter said. "Hopefully it gets him rolling." Ricketts had to dive to fend off Maidanas shot in the 20th minute as the rain swirled in the gusty wind. Portland appeared tentative until late in the first half, but a rally fell short when Valeris hard shot from out in front of the box sailed just wide. The Timbers looked to have a chance to even it in the 71st minute, but Valeri was called for a hand ball and the whistle blew before his shot hit the back of the net. Philadelphia played without midfielder Conor Casey, who also missed the preseason with a calf strain. Portland pulled defender Pa-Modou Kah in the 34th minute when he went down behind the play. Kah was replaced by Futty Danso. The Timbers inducted Mick Hoban, the teams first contracted player before their inaugural 1975 NASL season, into the teams Ring of Honor. Following his retirement from the game in 1978, Hoban was hired by Blue Ribbon Sports -- which later became Nike -- to help develop the shoemakers soccer business. He has remained one of Portlands most dedicated soccer ambassadors. B.C., claimed his first career World Cup bobsleigh race as he and brakeman Bryan Barnett of Edmonton posted a two-run time of one minute 39.71 seconds in a two-man event Saturday. The victory comes after Krippss grandmother passed away Jan. 6, his 27th birthday. "I know Baba was there with me today," he said. Switzerlands Beat Hefti and Alex Baumann were second, 0.15 seconds back. Canadians Lyndon Rush of Humboldt, Sask., and Calgarys Lascelles Brown were third, 0.32 seconds behind their victorious teammates. American Steven Holcomb was seventh but still managed to capture the overall crown. He finished with 1,645 overall points, 35 more than Hefti. After posting the fastest first run, Kripps thought of both his grandmother and advice he received from Rush. "I had that great first run and couldnt stop thinking I could win this thing," said Kripps. "Lyndon pulled me aside and said Anytime trophies, medals, victories or anything gets in your head slap yourself and focus. "Im so glad he did that because Id be lying if that didnt keep coming into my thoughts." Rush followed suite with his first World Cup medal of the season. Calgarys Chris Spring and Jesse Lumsden, of Burlington, Ont., were eighth in 1:40.31. With the Sochi Winter Games upcoming, Kripps says anything is possible. "I dont have much experience in Sochi, but this win sure gives me confidence," he said. "I think this shows anything can happen in bobsleigh. "If I can put two good starts and two good runs together, who knows what may be." NGolo Kante Jersey . Certainly not Monday night. George Hill took care of the early work, scoring a season-high 26 points, and Paul George closed it out by scoring 11 of his 26 points during a decisive second-half stretch that finally allowed Indiana to pull away from Minnesota 98-84 for yet another win. France Jerseys . Terry came from Boston along with Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce but has appeared in just 35 games after a knee injury, averaging 4.5 points on 36 per cent shooting. ATLANTA -- Just three weeks ago, Billy Horschel had every reason to start looking ahead to next season. Mike Pouncey Chargers Jersey . He had missed the cut in the first FedEx Cup playoff event to fall to No. 82 in the standings. He only had two top 10s all year, scant evidence that he was on the verge of something special. He was weeks away from becoming a father. What followed was the best golf of his life, and a payoff that was more than he could grasp. "Im not sure life can be better than this," Horschel said. Horschel capped off his improbable playoff run Sunday at East Lake by pulling away from Rory McIlroy early and holding off Jim Furyk late. He posted his 12th straight round in the 60s -- a 2-under 68 -- to win the Tour Championship by three shots and claim the FedEx Cup and its $10 million bonus. Thats what these FedEx Cup playoffs are all about -- who can get the hot hand over the last four tournaments. Horschel took that to a level only Tiger Woods can appreciate. No one had ever won the FedEx Cup starting the playoffs lower than No. 19. Horschel started at No. 69. But he was the runner-up in Boston, a winner in Denver and he cashed in big in Atlanta. Those three weeks of prize money and the FedEx Cup bonus were worth nearly $13.5 million. "I remember flying home and talking with my wife and she said, Youre probably just waiting for the season to be over and start a new season. I sort of was," Horschel said. "But at the same time, I knew my game was in the right shape and I just needed to get out of my own way. I needed to allow my golf game to show." It was just too late to show Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson. Horschels timing was perfect for the FedEx Cup, not so much for the Ryder Cup. Watson made his three captains picks after the Deutsche Bank Championship -- Horschel was the runner-up -- and he had no reason to select a guy whose only PGA Tour win was last year in New Orleans. Now the Americans head to Scotland without the hottest hand in golf. McIlroy will have to settle for a year worth more than $10 million -- two majors, a World Golf Championship and undisputed No. 1 in the world. He lost his way with a tee shot into the water for double bogey on the par-3 fifth, and self-destructed with three sloppy bogeys around the turn. Three consecutive birdies late in the round gave him a 71 and a tie for second place with Furyk, who closed with back-to-back bogeys for a 69. This was the Billy Horschel show all week -- all month. Clinging to a one-shot lead, he calmly sank an 8-foot par putt on No. 13 to avoid his first three-putt of the week and stay one shot ahead of Furyk. The biggest blow came at the 16th hole when Horschel drove right into the trees, wisely pitched back to the fairway and saw his approach spin back 30 feet short of the cup. The putt never looked as if it was going anywhere but in. "It came off and got up on top of that ridge and I said, This looks good. And it went in, and it was huge," Horschel said. "I knew Jim was nipping at my heels and everything, and that was a big, big putt." Furyk came up short with his approach on the 17th and made bogey to fall two shots behind, and he three-putted the 18th trying to force a birdie. That made things easy on Horschel, who drilled his tee shot onto the green for a two-putt par to finish at 11-under 269. Horschel shared hugs and a few tears with his parents. His wife was home in Florida. "Hopefully, shes not going into labour right now," he said. Not to worry. Brittany Horschel tweeted a picture of her smiling with her hands on her belly that said, ""We" made it! congrats daddy!" McIlroys birdies at the end earned him a little extra cash. He wound up No. 3 in the FedEx Cup, which paid an additional $2 million. Chris Kirk, who started the Tour Championship as the No. 1 seed in the FedEx Cup, closed with a 68 and tied for fourth with Justin Rose (69) and Jason Day (69). Kirk was second in the FedEx Cup and earned a $3 million bonus. It was the second time McIlroy had the biggest year without winning the FedEx Cup. He is a shoo-in to be PGA Tour player of the year, as he was in 2012. He was in better position this time -- tied for the lead through four holes -- until Horschel pulled away and the worlds No. 1 player ran out of steam. Needing to start picking up ground on the 600-yard ninth hole, he blasted his drive so far right that it wound up a foot away from the out-of-bounds fence of the practice range. There was no way out. With his caddie and a rules official ducking in the holly bushes, McIlroy slashed out with a wedge over the bushes and through a gap in the trees that only he saw. Next, he had a mobile TV truck lowered to ground level to get his third into the fairway. But his wedge came up short, and he made bogey. Two more bogeys later, he was five shots behind and out of the mix. "I just got really frustrated and just couldnt muster the energy to try and get something going again," McIlroy said. Los Angeles Chargers Jerseys . Canada will host Japan in a World Group first-round match in 2015. It will be a rematch of their first-round clash last year when Japan defeated Canada 4-1 to reach the World Group quarter-finals for the first time in its history. Derwin James Chargers Jersey . But unfortunately for the Niagara Falls, Ont., native, a pulled muscle wouldnt allow him to go past the second set. McDowells last victory on the European Tour came at the Alstom Open de France earlier this year, while his latest PGA Tour win was at the 2013 RBC Heritage. Morgan Schneiderlin says there is plenty more to come from him as Manchester United prepare to battle for a top four spot. Courtland Sutton Broncos Jersey . The midfielder arrived at Old Trafford last summer after weeks of transfer speculation, and has so far made 27 appearances in all competitions. But despite a solid showing from the Frenchman so far, he insists that the United faithful havent seen the best of him yet and says there is more to come. When I first came I had big expectations and, of course, I wanted to play for the title and I wanted to have a big impact straight away on everything. Its a new philosophy and a new thing to take on board, Schneiderlin told MUTV. The Frenchman has scored once for the Red Devils this season during a 3-0 win against Everton in October I had some good games and a good spell but theres a lot of competition and so even in my time when I didnt play every game I was still learning, still trying to improve and doing my best. Since the weeks went on in the season, Ive felt better and better and of course I know I have plenty more to show to everyone and plenty more in my locker.United have picked up some big results in their last two Premier League games - beating Manchester City and Everton - which has seen them storm into the top four picture. They now sit in fifth, just a point behind their local rivals, and face another huge test this weekend when they travel to Tottenham live on Super Sunday this weekend. The Red Devils also have an FA Cup quarter-final to settle with West Ham next week and Schneiderlin hopes the side can finish the season with a flourish. We look game by game, were not looking too far ahead but we know that we have some big games coming, like Leicester and Tottenham and the FA Cup and we want to win everything and make sure we finish very strong, the France international added. Manchester United travel to West Ham next week in their FA Cup quarter-final replay Of course we are all disappointed not to play for the title, but in football you never know what can happen so we will try to finish as strong as possible.Hopefully the teams who are in front will drop some points and we can capitalise on that.Catch Man United in Premier League action this weekend live on Sky Sports, as they go head-to-head with Spurs at White Hart Lane on Super Sunday from 3.30pm. According to TSN Edmonton reporter Ryan Rishaug, agent Rick Valette met with Oilers senior VP of hockey operations Scott Howson and general manager Craig MacTavish on Monday to kick off the talks. MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Twins had the right formula for successfully playing through the cold: a guy named Kyle Gibson. Unfazed by the subfreezing temperature at first pitch, Gibson pitched a career-high eight scoreless innings for the Twins in a 7-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday that opened a day-night doubleheader. Gibson (3-0) took the mound for the coldest start for an outdoor game in Twins history, 31 degrees, and breezed through a Blue Jays lineup that totalled 20 runs in the previous two games. He walked one, struck out four and scattered four singles. All he was missing was the ninth. He lobbied for 10 more pitches, but 105 were plenty for the Twins. "This early in the season were not going to mess with that kids arm. But that was a great performance," manager Ron Gardenhire said. Gibson had a rough rookie year in 2013, but the 2009 first-round amateur draft pick has been the early stalwart of the rotation that stumbled through the first two turns. He lowered his ERA to 0.93. "Especially toward the end, I was thinking about going nine innings. I wasnt thinking about the cold," said Gibson, recalling a couple of snow-covered games in college at Missouri. His parents travelled from Indiana to watch him play Thursday, and the 6-foot-6 right-hander was throwing first-pitch strike after first-pitch strike. "I know theres some Twins fans that dont like the pitch to contact, but if my sinkers sinking then Im doing myself a disservice by throwing ball one," Gibson said. Josmil Pinto highlighted a five-run fifth inning against R.A. Dickey (1-3) with a two-run double, missing a grand slam by a few inches. Trevor Plouffe also had two RBIs. But the story of the game was Gibson. "His fastball was sneaky and jumping on you pretty good," Toronto manager John Gibbons said. Gibson went 2-4 with a 5.63 ERA in 10 starts last season but has earned his spot back. "He was confident, really confident, and he showed that from day one of spring trainingg. Josey Jewell Broncos Jersey. It wasnt like he was out there on a mission. He was just going his thing," Gardenhire said after the Twins beat the Blue Jays for just the fifth time in their last 22 meetings. After wintry weather forced postponement of Wednesdays game, workers scrambled all morning to melt snow and ice from the seating areas, and the grounds crew dried the warning track. The Twins even sent out a company-wide memo asking for help. Slush still sat along the edges of the plaza behind right field, and the highest seating level was closed off because it wasnt cleared in time, giving those customers an unexpected upgrade. The announced paid attendance was 20,507, but the actual number of people present was probably half of that at most. The previous lowest first-pitch temperature the Twins played in was 32 degrees on May 2, 1967, at Metropolitan Stadium. Their home was the covered, climate-controlled Metrodome from 1982-09. Dickeys knuckleball was moving all over the place. Needing 112 pitches to get 13 outs, Dickey didnt finish the fifth inning when the Twins batted around. His ERA rose to 6.26, after he allowed seven hits, five walks and five runs while striking out four. Jason Kubel, Kurt Suzuki and Chris Colabello also drove in runs for the Twins. "They did a good job of laying off really good pitches. I thought I got squeezed a couple of pitches, but outside of that it was one of those days where you werent putting the whole game together," Dickey said, adding: "Im traditionally a slow starter so hopefully I can get on track next time." NOTES: The last Twins pitcher to win each of his first three starts as a member of the opening day rotation was Livan Hernandez in 2008. ... Dickey is 1-3 with a 6.58 ERA in six career starts against the Twins. ... The Twins recalled former Yankees SS Eduardo Nunez, acquired via trade last week, from Triple-A Rochester to play 3B for the second game as the 26th man. The Blue Jays added OF Anthony Gose from Triple-A Buffalo. OTTAWA - Daniel Alfredsson may not have been the most vocal captain, but his teammates say his actions spoke volumes. Jeremy Hill Patriots Jersey .Alfredsson returned to Ottawa on Thursday to announce his retirement from the NHL after 18 seasons, 17 of which were spent with the Senators. As news of Alfredssons impending retirement spread over the past week, teammates from near and far shared their unique perspectives on what made the former Senators captain special. He wasnt a loud guy, but he had so much respect from everyone, said Magnus Arvedson, who played six seasons with Alfredsson in Ottawa. He was one of the hardest working players, if not the hardest worker. He cared about everyone and wanted to make sure every player was happy. He was trustworthy, smart and just a solid person so people wanted to play for him.He loved to lead by example, but he knew when to stand up and speak, added former Senators defenceman Wade Redden. He somehow knew when something needed to be said.In 17 seasons with the Senators, 13 as captain, Alfredsson holds the clubs franchise records for goals (426), assists (682) and points (1,108) with 1,178 games played.Redden, who spent 11 seasons with Ottawa, said every accolade his close friend earned is well deserved. Redden is travelling to Ottawa to be on hand for Alfredssons retirement.First and foremost hes a great guy and a great friend, said Redden, from his home in Kelowna, B.C. There are so many great memories playing together and spending time away from the rink. He always had such a great way of looking at the game and I could always count on him to help me figure things out. He was someone I could always talk to, about anything. He was always the hardest working guy and you could tell he played with a passion. He just loved the game.Arvedson said Alfredssons retirement is making headlines in his home country. There are so many great times with Alfie, said Arvedson, who now lives in Karlstad, Sweden. He loved everything about the game. We would often sit on the bus after a game and he would still want to talk about hockey. He would talk about other teams, other players and you could just tell how much he loved the game.Alfredssons passion for the game is a recurring theme among his teammates. As a professional he was as good as they come, said retired goaltender Patrick Lalime, who played with Alfredsson for five seasons. He was completely dedicated to the game. He was a treat to have as a teammate. He was serious about the game, but he liked to have fun.Nashville Predators forward Mike Fisher played 11 seasons with Alfredsson and says by far he is the best player hes played with.He led on the ice with passion and work ethic and skill, said Fisher. Off the ice, in the room, he was so well respected and he wasnt overly vocal, but when he spoke people listened and respected him.One of Alfredssons greatest attributes was his ability to take his game to another level when it counted most. Many refer to him scoring the game-winning goal against the Buffalo Sabres to send the Senators to the Stanley Cup Final in 2007, but to his teammates that was just one of many highlights. He could always rise to another level in big games, Arvedson said. You could just see his eyes glow when there were big games. He had such a passion for the game and he could find a way to play at his best when it was most needed.Lalime says Alfredsson was always determined to be at his best.He always left it all on the ice. He was smart, passionate, determined and he had a will to get what he wanted, Lalime said. While Alfredsson will undoubtedly be remembered for his time on the ice, he had just as great an impact on the community. From the time he arrived in Ottawa as a 22-year-old rookie he could always be counted on to help with various charitable endeavours.Best known for his work with the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre, where he helped bring awareness to mental health issues, Alfredsson was also a staunch supporter of the Boys & Girls Club as well as an advocate for the You Can Play Project. Most times he made his charitable contributions quietly with no need for recognition.I think the things he did off the ice are almost more important, said Fisher. Everything he brought to the city and the community cant even begin to be measured. He did so much quietly, but they made a big impact. Its just the kind of person he is.Luke Richardson, now head coach of the Binghamton Senators, played just one season with Alfredsson, but the two formed an immediate bond and developed a close friendship. He became a part of the community and thats just the type of person he is, said Richardson. As good a hockey player he is, hes ten times the person and family man. WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. -- Angel Cabrera no longer has to fret about that streak of disappointments in non-major events on the PGA Tour. The 44-year-old Argentine won the Greenbrier Classic on Sunday for his first victory in a tournament other than a major, closing with his second straight 6-under 64 for a two-stroke victory over a heavy-hearted George McNeill. Cabrera, whose only other PGA Tour victories came in the 2007 U.S. Open and 2009 Masters, built a three-shot lead before making things interesting with a pair of late bogeys. He finished at 16-under 264 and now has another green jacket -- that as Greenbrier Classic champion. Cabrera had no top 10-finishes this season entering the tournament but had everything working Sunday, hammering drives and approach shots with precision and coming up with clutch putts, especially on the back nine. "This was a great opportunity," Cabrera said through an interpreter. "I wanted it. I needed to win a tournament. I felt under control today out there, and I didnt want to let it get away from me." McNeill shot a season-best 61 for his fourth top-10 of the season and first since mid-March. But hell put golf on hold for a few weeks. Golf Channel reported that his older sister, Michele McNeill, died of cancer Sunday morning and the player was informed after his round was over. "Golf doesnt really mean a whole lot," McNeill told reporters. So its hard." Webb Simpson had a 63 to finish third at 10 under. Third-round leader Billy Hurley III bogeyed four of the first six holes to fall out of contention. He shot 73 and finished in a seven-way tie for fourth at 9 under. No third-round leader has hung on to win the Greenbrier Classic in its five-year existence. McNeill was the clubhouse leader at 14 under well ahead of Cabrera, who still had the back nine to play. Cabrera overtook McNeill with birdie putts of 17 and 7 feet on the 11th and 12th holes, then gave a fist pump after moving to 17 under by holing a 176-yard 8-iron up the hill for eagle on the par-4 13th, the hardest hole at Old White TPC. By then his lead was three strokes, but he bogeyed the 14th after his approach shot spun off the front of the green and bogeyed the par-3 15th after hitting into the rough on his tee shot. Cabrera smashed a 330-yard drive over the lake on the par-4 16th and made par, then drilled a 336-yard drive on the 616-yard 17th and two-putted for birdie. He closed out with par on the par-3 18th. "The big thing was the drive today," he said. "It was good all week long. It made the course play a little shorter for myself." Cabrera won $1.17 million and is projected to improve from 158th to 54th in the FedEx Cup standings. McNeill would move from 60th to 29th. Simpson had flown home on Friday and learned upon landing that he made the cut. So he rented a car and drove back to West Virginia. Simpson and Keagan Bradley both had strong finishes as they continue to try to impress U.S. Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson, who will make three at-large selections for the Sept. 26-28 event at Gleneagles in Scotland. The top nine in the Ryder Cup standings automatically qualify for the team. Simpson is 17th and Bradley is 18th. "I think Tom knows whats going on, and Im hoping my good play will take care of it and not have to be a captains pick," Simpson said. "But if I was a captains pick, it would be great to be on that team." Joining Hurley at 9 under were Bud Cauley (64), Bradley (66), Brendon Todd (66), Chris Stroud (69), Cameron Tringale (69) and Will Wilcox (69). The leading four players among the top 12 not already exempt for the British Open earned spots in the July 17-20 tournament at Royal Liverpool. Those spots went to McNeill, Stroud, Tringale and Hurley. Cauleys final shot of the day was a hole-in-one on the 18th, which triggered a $100 prize from the tournament to paying customers in the stands. But Cauley missed out this week on a British Open nod, whose qualifying tiebreaker uses the world ranking. Cauley entered the week at No. 295. Another spot will be handed out next weekend at the John Deere Classic. Lawson Crouse Jersey . With Englands Jermain Defoe possibly headed to the World Cup and reserve forward Bright Dike a long-term casualty due to an Achilles injury, Toronto needed help for Brazils Gilberto with Mondays MLS transfer deadline looming. Toronto also has forwards Andrew Wiedeman and teenager Jordan Hamilton, currently on loan to the Wilmington Hammerheads. Attacking midfielders Dwayne De Rosario, Issey Nakajima-Farran and Brazils Jackson are also an attacking option. Toronto (3-4-0) has just seven goals in seven games, with Defoe accounting for three of them. Thats tied with Los Angeles and Montreal as the lowest scoring output in the league. Agbossoumonde, 22, had fallen down the defensive pecking order with Steven Caldwell, Doneil Henry, Bradley Orr and rookie Nick Hagglund preferred ahead of him. "With our current depth in defence we felt that the opportunity to acquire an attacking player like Luke Moore was the right deccision to make at this time for the club as we approach the World Cup break," Toronto FC general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said in a statement.dddddddddddd "With Lukes experience, he will be a welcomed addition to our squad and provide more options for us up front. Wed like to thank Gale for all of his contributions both on and off the pitch and wish him well in Colorado." Moore was acquired earlier this season by Colorado from Chivas USA. The 28-year-old made six appearances, with two starts and no goals, for Chivas. He arrived in the MLS during the off-season from Turkeys Sanica Boru Elazigspor. Moore began his career in England with Aston Villa in 2003, and later was part of Swanseas rise to the Premier League in 2011. Agbossoumonde, 22, was originally acquired on Dec. 20, 2012 through a weighted lottery at MLS headquarters. In two seasons, the American defender made 13 appearances, including 12 starts.
