INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indiana Pacers bench didnt provide much in Saturday nights 97-96 win over the Brooklyn Nets. Danny Granger, Luis Scola, C.J. Watson and Ian Mahinmi combined to shoot just 4 of 18 for 16 points. None played more than Watsons 18:33. "Weve got to figure out something to get a better rhythm with that group," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. Maybe the arrival of Andrew Bynum will help. Hours after the Pacers signed the free-agent centre for the rest of the season, Indiana overcame an early deficit and held off the Nets to improve to an NBA-best 22-2 at home. Bynum wasnt in the arena -- Vogel said before the game that the mercurial big man had returned to Cleveland and hadnt had a chance to meet his new teammates yet. But Indianas All-Star starter, Paul George, isnt concerned about Bynums reputation. "I think it increases our chances (of winning a championship)," George said. "A lot of teams have three centres. With us only having two, him being one of the best ones out there, its a no-brainer to go after a talented guy like that." The Pacers (36-10) eked out the win despite a season-high 24 turnovers that Brooklyn converted into 36 points. "We didnt play a great game," Vogel said. "Weve got to get under control." George and Roy Hibbert both had 20 points for the Pacers, who swept the four-game season series. Lance Stephenson, left out of the All-Star game despite leading the NBA in triple-doubles, added 14 points for Indiana. David West had 17 points and George Hill scored 10. "Weve got to be a little more patient. Were swinging for the fences a little too much in terms of trying to make some tight interior passes as opposed to making the simple play," said West, who had a game-high seven assists. Shaun Livingston scored a season-high 24 points for the Nets, who couldnt hold an early seven-point lead against the Eastern Conference leaders. Joe Johnson, an All-Star selection, spent much of the night dueling with Stephenson and scored 16 for Brooklyn, which has lost three straight since starting January with 11 wins in 12 games. "We play 82 games through the season and youre going to have your ups and downs, and hopefully youre ready come playoff time," Nets coach Jason Kidd said. Stephenson, unhappy he was left off the All-Star team, had words at times with the Brooklyn bench. "I could care less if its personal," Johnson said. "He needs to talk it over with the coaches. Ive got nothing to do with it." Paul Pierce scored 15 points, Deron Williams added 13 and Kevin Garnett had 12 for the Nets, who were coming off a 120-95 loss at home to Oklahoma City on Friday night. "The guys were active tonight and we got our hands on some balls and we turned them over," Kidd said. "We didnt capitalize as well as we wanted, but definitely an improvement from what we did the night before." West scored seven points in the fourth quarter, hitting five of six free throws to help the Pacers hold on. "David always comes through when we need him most," George said. "He shines in those moments. He really picks us up in those moments." Brooklyn tied the score at 76 on Livingstons two free throws with 10 minutes left, but Hibbert converted a three-point play and Indiana led the rest of the way. Livingston pulled Brooklyn to 85-83 with 5:10 to play, but after an extended Indiana possession, Stephenson hit two free throws after being fouled by Johnson, then Hibbert slammed home a dunk. The Nets wouldnt go away, though. Hill hit one of two free throws with 18.6 seconds to play for a 94-90 lead before Johnsons 3-pointer with 8 seconds left made it 94-93. West then hit two free throws, rebounded Pierces missed 3 and hit one more free throw to make it 97-93. Williams hit a 3 with 0.4 seconds left, and the game ended after Scola threw the inbounds pass off Pierces back. "The one thing we said was, Dont throw it out of bounds," Vogel said. "We said, Throw it anywhere where it hits them or us." Brooklyn took advantage of a sluggish start by the Pacers to lead by seven points three times in the first quarter, the last on Johnsons short jumper that put the Nets ahead 13-6 with 7:28 to play in the period. The Pacers took their first lead at 19-18 on Georges 3-pointer. Livingston hit two jumpers and Johnson added another to put Brooklyn back ahead 24-19, but Indiana closed the quarter on a 6-0 run to lead 25-24. Neither team could build a lead greater than four points in the second quarter, and the lead changed hands six times, with five ties. Georges driving layup with 6 seconds to play gave the Pacers a 46-45 halftime lead. The Pacers outscored Brooklyn 12-2 over the first 3:36 of the third quarter, building a 58-47 lead and prompting a timeout by Kidd. Brooklyn responded with a 19-9 run to pull to 67-66. Indiana scored the next five points, but Alan Anderson hit a 3-pointer, Mason Plumlee made one of two free throws and the Nets trailed just 72-70 entering the fourth. Like many womens MMA pioneers, the Port Colborne, Ont. native didnt think she would get rich by slapping on a pair of four-ounce gloves. She simply wanted to test her skills against a tough opponent. Though her first outing saw her suffer a TKO loss to former Strikeforce champ and current UFC womens bantamweight Sarah Kaufman, Davis fell in love with the thrill of competition. She also knew she had what it took to be a champion. "I remember my first goal," Davis recalled recently. "I was like, Okay, I just want to get a belt. Then I got my first belt — I won a belt in amateur Muay Thai, I got my first jiu jitsu belt and I had my Raging Wolf (womens flyweight) belt. "Now the next step is to get that UFC belt." Following more than seven years competing against the best women fighters in the world — and amassing an impressive 16-5 record, which includes a 3-0 run since joining the UFC — Davis is now set to challenge UFC womens bantamweight titleholder Ronda Rousey in the co-main event of UFC 175 in Las Vegas July 5. As she prepares for the biggest fight of her life, Davis admitted she is still in awe of her journey to the spotlight. "Its been almost surreal for me," Davis said. "Obviously, I just started out like most people — I just kind of did it for fun. I never thought Id be living in California and be fighting for a UFC title. I just enjoyed it so much that I wanted to keep doing it. "Its crazy because Im a girl from a small town in Ontario, Canada and now I have all these huge opportunities. The world has kind of opened to me. I feel like Im almost in a dream world. Im just grateful for how far Ive come in life and the experiences Im able to have." Though Davis can fondly reminisce about her long road to the top, shes hardly standing around enjoying the view. Not only would a victory over Rousey mean bigger paydays, it would also allow her to join the ranks of Carlos Newton and Georges St-Pierre as the sole Canadian UFC champions. Davis said she aims to etch her name in the history books alongside the former welterweight titleholders. "(I was) the first Canadian woman to be signed with the UFC and now the first to fight for a title," Davis said. "The next step is to hopefully be the first one to bring that belt back home. "Tiimes really flying.dddddddddddd To have this opportunity in that short amount of time — and even to just be able to fight for a belt — it doesnt happen too often. I know the division is kind of small, but every single day its growing. Im just trying to live in the moment. This is my moment in time." Of course in order to get the job done, Davis has to become the first fighter to solve the riddle of Rousey. A 2008 Olympic judo bronze medalist and undefeated in MMA, Rousey has looked as unbeatable as any champion on the UFC roster. Early in her career you could pretty much set your watch to her winning via first-round armbar. However, in her last trip to the octagon four months ago, Rousey displayed a new edge to her game by dispatching Sara McMann with a vicious knee to the liver. Davis admitted she isnt completely sure what to expect from Rousey, but said she is ready for wherever the fight may take her. "Rondas progressed as a fighter," Davis said. "Now, I have to deal with a different side of her, too. Shes been working a lot on her standup, which we saw in her last fight with her hands, her footwork and her knees. So Im not quite sure what kind of style were going to see Ronda come out with. You kind of have to be prepared for everything." Not only would a victory over Rousey mean bigger paydays, it would also allow her to join the ranks of Carlos Newton and Georges St-Pierre as the sole Canadian UFC champions. You kind of have to be prepared for everything." Though Rousey has made a career of finishing top fighters in violent fashion, Davis presents a tough challenge. A black belt in both Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Japanese Jujutsu, she is arguably the most skilled grappler Rousey has ever faced. Her Muay Thai background was also on full display during her dissection of Liz Carmouche in November. Davis said Rousey has never fought an opponent quite like her. "I feel like Im the most well-rounded fighter shes ever had to deal with," Davis said. "Im comfortable on my feet and Im also comfortable on the ground. "Im pretty much dangerous no matter what. Every single fight my Muay Thai gets better — dangerous kicks, dangerous strikes — along with the ground, as well. She hasnt fought a fighter with as many qualifications as I have. Either way, I think Im going to give her more of a challenge than shes ever had to face before." Davis said she plans to stun the MMA world. "(Fans) should expect complete chaos," Davis said. "Ronda has that style that brings out the best in me, where shes constantly adding pressure and on the attack. Its going to be a very fast-paced, non-stop fight." Most of the 14 players suspended by MLB for using steroids last year were from those two countries.U.S. District Judge Cecilia M. Altonaga read a factual statement signed by Nunez that described how he used his position at a New York-based sports representation agency, ACES Inc., to connect with players, including arranging for them to buy homes and cars and handling travel.Eventually that led to meetings beginning in 2010 with Bosch, and injections of testosterone to help the players feel and play better, the statement said. It is not clear how Nunez came to know Bosch, who was not a licensed doctor but pretended to be one.Nunez would also provide Bosch with monthly payments on behalf of MLB players, the statement said.ddddddddddddNunez pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute less than 1,000 units of testosterone, which carries a maximum 10-year prison sentence. His attorney, Michael Matters, said Nunez is likely to receive a far less prison term when he is sentenced March 3.Bosch has also pleaded guilty along with four others. Among the higher-profile Bosch customers was New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez, who has admitted using performance-enhancing drugs supplied by Biogenesis in court documents after repeated public denials.Rodriguez was suspended for all of last season. Milwaukee Brewers star Ryan Braun, a former University of Miami player, was handed a 65-game suspension, with each of the remaining 12 players serving 50-game suspensions.Trial is set for April 6 — the same day as the Yankees 2015 home opener — for Rodriguez cousin Yuri Sucart and ex-University of Miami pitching coach Lazaro Collazo. SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Golden State Warriors have made another move in hopes of finding a reliable backup to point guard Stephen Curry. The Warriors acquired Steve Blake from the Los Angeles Lakers for reserve guards Kent Bazemore and MarShon Brooks on Wednesday night, adding a veteran ball-handler to their beleaguered bench. Word of the deal started to spread just before the Warriors played in Sacramento and the Lakers hosted Houston, with the three players involved saying goodbye to teammates and coaches in the locker room. Both teams confirmed the trade before halftime of their games. "We think this just bolsters the bench and gives us some more options, some more weapons and a player when you give him the ball you know you can trust him," Warriors general manager Bob Myers said during intermission in Sacramento. "We just think it was a chance to improve our roster and that was our justification." The trade gives Golden State a savvy veteran off the bench without sacrificing any of its core players or moving into the leagues luxury tax. The Warriors used a $4 million trade exception they got in the deal with Denver that landed free agent Andre Iguodala last summer. The team is about $400,000 under the luxury tax, Myers said. The Warriors were hoping Blake would be uniform when they host Houston on Thursday night in Oakland. Blake, who is making $4 million in the final year of his contract, averaged 9.5 points and 7.6 assists while starting all 27 games he played for the injury-depleted Lakers this season. The Warriors are counting on the 33-year-old veteran to improve a bench that has been searching for a solid ball-handler since Jarrett Jack left for Cleveland in free agency last summer. The Warriors acquired Jordan Crawford and Brooks from Boston in a three-team trade on Jan. 15. Golden State sent struggling backup Toney Douglas to Miami in that deal. Crawford has been, at times, a prolific scorer but is still learning how to be a better distributor and playmaker on a Warriors team that has plenty of shooters. He entered Wednesday averaging 6.3 points and 2.2 assists in his first 13 games with the Warriors after starting for the Celtics while Rajon Rondo was injured. "We like our core, and I think our core likes each other. I think its a core that can win," Myers said. "And our bench, for whatever reason, struggled early on. Anything we could do to fortify it, we tried to do without removing what we consider our core." The Lakers received some salary cap relief and a pair of young and unproven players in the deal. Brooks appeared in just seven games with the Warriors and never caught on in Mark Jacksons rotation. Bazemore, best known for his animated cheering on Golden States bench, also struggled in limited action the past two seasons. Both had split time with the teams NBA Development League affiliate, the Santa Cruz Warriors, but should get more of an opportunity with the rebuilding Lakers. Mike Gesicki Dolphins Jersey . Weve believed in this since the very start.Malmo reached the final in 1979 when the competition was known as the European Cup, but this year is the first time the Swedish club has reached the group stage since it became the Champions League in 1992.All four clubs in the group now have three points from two games, with Atletico beating Juventus 1-0 in the other match.Olympiakos controlled possession but couldnt beat Malmo goalkeeper Robin Olsen, who didnt concede a single goal at home in the qualifying rounds.Luka Milivojevic and Giannis Maniatis had good chances for Olympiakos in the first half but saw their side fall behind in the 42nd after Alberto Botia failed to contain Rosenberg. The 32-year-old striker snatched the ball from Botias feet, poked itt at Olympiakos goalkeeper Roberto and then slotted the rebound into an open goal.ddddddddddddOlympiakos wanted a penalty 10 minutes into the second half but referee Sergei Karasev booked Maniatis for diving after a clash with a Malmo defender in the area. The Greek side pressed for an equalizer and came close with attempts from Kostas Mitroglou, Maniatis and second-half substitute Jimmy Durmaz, a former Malmo player.Meanwhile they looked vulnerable to Malmos counterattacks and could have gone down 2-0 down when Isaac Kiese Thelin headed Magnus Erikssons cross straight onto Roberto and then failed to get the rebound on target.Malmo clinched the win after Thelin flicked the ball to Pawel Cibicki, who found Rosenberg in the area. The Malmo striker didnt get a clean shot away a€” but the ball still found its way into the far corner via the post.Three points in the group stage here in the Champions League, thats huge, Rosenberg said. Even if they had the ball a lot, it was mostly in their own half. In our half, they didnt have a lot of possession.Malmo lost its opening match 2-0 away to Juventus while Olympiakos beat Atletico Madrid 3-2 at home. RENTON, Wash. -- When it was clear Marcus Trufants time with the Seattle Seahawks was over following the 2012 season, he was given a message by general manager John Schneider and coach Pete Carroll on his way out. If it became apparent that Trufant was ready to retire from the NFL, they wanted him to do it as a member of the Seahawks. Trufant got that opportunity Thursday, officially retiring from football after signing a one-day contract with Seattle. "It (the offer) says a lot about them, it says a lot about their character, it says a lot about the organization itself because they didnt have to do it," Trufant said. "They chose to do it and Im very grateful for that. They just extended the hand and that just shows what kind of people they are, and I appreciate it." Trufant spent his entire NFL career with the Seahawks, with the exception of the 2013 training camp when he was with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Trufant was released at the end of August and remained out of football during the 2013 season. Being a dad shuttling around his daughters and starting in on new business ventures during his season out of football solidified Trufants believe that he was finally done with the game. "It was just time, man. Just to be home with my family, all of my girls are getting bigger so its just good to be home," Trufant said. "I had a nice run, and I have no complaints." Trufant retires as one of the few to become a star without ever really leaving home. He was a prep star at Wilson High School in nearby Tacoma, Wash., then a college standout at Washington State and finally a first-round pick of the Seahawks in 2003. Instead of having to fly across country for his introductory news conference after being drafted, Trufant took a phone call from then-coach Mike Holmgren, jumped in the car and drove 45 minutes up the freeway. That was the start of his association with the Seahawks. Trufant started 125 of 136 games played during his time in Seattle. He finished with 21 career interceptions and was voted to the Pro Bowl in 2007. He spoke about his career for 20 minutes Thursday, reading from notes typed out on his phone the night before. The Seahawks auditorium was packed with friends and family. Trufant was joined on stage by his parents, his wife and his brothers, Desmond and Isaiah, both cornerbacks in the NFL. Isaiah now plays for Cleveland, while Desmond is entering his second season with Atlanta. Carroll was there as well, along with former teammates Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor, soon-to-be Hall of Famer Walter Jones and Isaiah Thomas of the Sacramento Kings. The fact all three Trufants were in NFL camps last August at the same time, playing the same position, brings a special sense of pride for the family. "He laid the path out for me," Desmond Trufant said. "I seen exactly what I had to do, what not to do, how to carry yourself on the field, off the field. Just completely set the right path for me. He made it a lot easier for me to get where I am now." Ray Allen Jersey .com) - It appears both the Houston Rockets and Chicago Bulls will reach the playoffs, but the two squads are coming off losing efforts. Russell Westbrook Jersey . The 10-year deal the league and players agreed to that ended the 2011 lockout gave either side the right to opt out after six years. With the league projecting financial growth, there has been speculation that players will take that option in three years, especially since a new national TV contract will be in place by then. http://www.authenticthunderauthority.com...der-jersey-c-5/. Ricciardos exclusion from the results tarnished what had been a day of celebration for local fans, who were jubilant that the Red Bull driver had apparently become the first Australian to finish on the podium at his home race. However just before midnight, stewards ruled that Ricciardos car had "exceeded consistently the maximum allowed fuel flow" and that the team refused an instruction from the races technical delegate Charlie Whiting to change the fuel-flow sensor before the race and a further request during the race to reduce the fuel flow. Olt, who grew up in Branford, Connecticut, attended UConn and made a nearly 2 1-2 hour trek to Boston a handful of times to watch the Red Sox, belted a two-run homer, one of four hit by Cubs in a 16-9 rout that completed a three-game interleague series sweep.Clemson Tigers senior QB Tajh Boyd entered the week as frontrunner but cedes the position to Louisvilles Teddy Bridgewater. Bridgewater, a junior quarterback and potential first overall draft pick, has a stat line through two weeks too gaudy to place him anywhere but at the top of the second edition of the Heisman Watch this season. Against Eastern Kentucky, Bridgewater threw for nearly 400 yards and four touchdowns. Through two games the Miami, Florida native already has 750 yards passing and nine touchdowns. Boyd meanwhile threw for just 169 yards in Week 2, before spending most of the second half on the sidelines in Clemsons win over South Carolina State. His fall to No. 2 in the Watch is as much due to the lack of an extravagant stat line Heisman candidates need to put up against FCS opponents as it was due to missing most of the second half. Last years winner Johnny Manziel remains very much in the Heisman picture this year as well. Despite not playing a full game again this week, Manziels stat line in Texas A&Ms romp over Sam Houston State was still very impressive. The charismatic sophomore accounted for four touchdowns and more than 400 yards in the win, and now has six passing touchdowns through just five quarters of action this season. Manziel and the Aggies have No. 1 Alabama on the schedule next week, and if he can pull off another statement game win against the Crimson Tide, he may just vault to the top of the Heisman Watch permanently. Others that have forced their way onto the Heisman Watch through two weeks include two running backs in Georgia sophomore Todd Gurley(288 yards, three TDs) and Baylor junior Lache Seastrunk (261 yards, five touchdowns). Meeanwhile, South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney and Ohio State QB Braxton Miller did little to help their cause for the second straight week.dddddddddddd Clowney was stifled by Georgia, and criticized his coaches after the game for the way they used him while Miller left the Buckeyes big win over San Diego State early due to injury, to watch backup Kenny Guiton take home the big stat line. Alabama QB AJ McCarron was off in Week 2 but shares the same opportunity Manziel does in Week 3 to put a statement game on his resume early in the year. With less than one week to go until the March 5 NHL trade deadline, TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun has the latest on Ottawas Chris Phillips, Vancouvers Ryan Kesler, and the Rangers Ryan Callahan and offers some insight on their situations and potential trade status. What are the chances that Chris Phillips is still an Ottawa Senator after the trade deadline? Pierre LeBrun: Well theres still a chance, because the Senators are trying to sign him. They have already talked to him and they would like to do a one-year extension with him. If they get a yes on that extension, then he stays put, but if they cant get him signed it puts Ottawa in a tough spot because they are five points out - theyre not in a playoff spot right now. If the next couple of games dont go well, theyre even further apart from a playoff spot and I can tell you this, the Boston Bruins and Peter Chiarelli - who was formerly with the Ottawa Senators - knows Phillips and Boston would be all over him if hes put on the trade market by Ottawa. The next couple of games are huge in terms of his future and what the Senators do with him. Are there any new developments on the Ryan Kesler trade front? LeBrun: Kesler is the biggest name on the market right now. He didnt officially ask for a trade - I think thats true - but everyone knows that from both his side and the Canucks side, a change of scenery might be the best thing. I was told on Friday by a source, and this is now public, that the action has absolutely picked up and the phone is ringing off the hook in Vancouver. So many teams want to at least educate themselves about what it would cost to get in on the Ryan Kesler market. And again, the Canucks are telling everyone "we dont have to move him before Wednesday." If they dont get their price met (which is very high) then they can wait until June to possibly trade him. The Flyers, Blue Jackets, Red Wings - of course hes from Michigan - the list goes on as theres so much interest in Kesler. How does Dan Girardis six-year deal impact Ryan Callahan with the New York Rangers? LeBrun: I do feel in my heart of hearts that it has an impact and thats where it starts with Callahan. I have this gut feeling that he might soften on these contract demands and if he does, I think he can re-sign with the Rangers. And thats because this team is on a roll, hes the captain, and he and Girardi are close so look for that to maybe have an impact. But certainly if he doesnt soften on his contract demands then the Rangers are going to trade him. One small note on Girardi, by the way - his no-movement clause, which is in his new extension, starts right away. He doesnt have to wait until July 1 when his new deal kicks in. EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State cant count on many of its players to perform consistently well. Keith Appling has been an exception in Big Ten play. Appling scored 24 points to help the fifth-ranked Spartans beat Minnesota 87-75 in overtime Saturday after overcoming a double-digit deficit in the second half and blowing a lead late in regulation. "No lead is safe at the end of a game, especially in the Big Ten," Appling said. The Spartans (15-1, 4-0 Big Ten) are well aware of that fact. The Spartans scored 15 straight points while holding the Golden Gophers (13-4, 2-2) scoreless for nearly 8 minutes after trailing 53-43 with 15:57 left. Michigan State missed an opportunity to win in regulation for the second straight game, losing a five-point lead in the last 13 seconds. The Spartans were without Adreian Payne because of a sprained right foot. "Theres nothing medically wrong that we can observe," coach Tom Izzo said. "Theres no stress fracture. He wanted to play. Hes not being a wimp. He just didnt feel he could, so I didnt want to take a chance and suit him up." Payne didnt start the previous game, but scored 18 points in an overtime win over No. 3 Ohio State in which Michigan State wasted a 17-point lead in the second half. "We deserve some criticism for how weve executed," Izzo said. Late in regulation, the Gophers (13-4, 2-2) made plays and got a break that gave them a shot to pull off an upset. Minnesotas Malik Smith made his fifth 3-pointer, Gary Harris missed two free throws with 11.3 seconds left for the Spartans and DeAndre Mathieus layup with 1.7 seconds left tied the game and sent it to overtime. First-year Gophers coach Richard Pitino was glad Mathieu made the shot, but it wasnt the one he wanted. "I was running a play and trying to shoot a 3 to be honest with you," Pitino said. Michigan State scored the first nine points of OT, ending Minnesotas chance to beat a top-five team on its home court for the first time in school history and to win at the Breslin Center for the first time since 1997. "Anytime you go on the road in a great environment and you step up for 40 minutes and you doont win the game, it is a bit of a missed opportunity," Pitino said.dddddddddddd "But there will be plenty more." Minnesotas next two home games are against Ohio State and Wisconsin, teams currently ranked No. 3 and No. 4 in The Associated Press poll. The Spartans barely did enough to keep winning and match the best 16-game record Izzo has had in 19 seasons, equaling the record they had during the 2000-01 season as defending national champions. Minnesota guard Austin Hollins turned the ball over with 42 seconds left and teammate Andre Hollins had an ill-advised 3-pointer blocked with 23 seconds left, trailing by three on each possession. Then, the Gophers struggled to take care of the basketball in OT and couldnt stop the Spartans. "We just made some bonehead plays," Andre Hollins said. Minnesota needed more than 4 minutes to score in the extra period and those points pulled it within seven. "We came in confident," Andre Hollins said. "We expected to win this game. Its not a moral victory. We have to give them a lot of credit for making their free throws." Andre Hollins scored 24 and Smith had 17 points off the bench. Smith scored 11 of his points, nine on 3-pointers, in the first 12 minutes of the game to help the Gophers lead 41-36 at halftime after making 7 of 12 shots beyond the arc. They made just 3 of 14 3-pointers in the second half and overtime. Harris had 19 points and redshirt freshman Kenny Kaminski scored a season-high 15 -- all on 3-pointers. Appling said Kaminski, "saved the day," for the Spartans. Izzo has not been pleased lately with Branden Dawson and Denzel Valentine and both played relatively well at times against Minnesota. Dawson finished with six points and 10 rebounds after not scoring and grabbing just three rebounds in the first half. "Theres something wrong with Brandan," Izzo said. "Theres something bothering him. You can see it -- you dont have to be a coach." Valentine had nine points, 10 rebounds, four assists, four steals and a blocked shot late in regulation. "He got some big rebounds late and he defended better," Izzo said. the Mountaineers reserves outscored

(SportsNetwork.com) - If you would have said a year ago that the Boston Red Sox would be back in the American League Championship Series this season, you likely would have been laughed at. But, one year removed from losing 93 games, that is exactly the position the Red Sox find themselves in, as they kick off the best-of-seven set versus the Detroit Tigers at Fenway Park on Saturday. Boston is back in this round for the first time since 2008 after upending the Tampa Bay Rays in four games of the ALDS. Only two teams were worse than Boston in the AL in 2012, leading to the dismissal of manager Bobby Valentine after just one season. So, out with the old and in the new, as the team hired John Farrell away from Toronto to be its new skipper. All Farrell did was put himself atop most peoples AL Manager of the Year ballots, as he guided the Red Sox to a 28-game turnaround and ended the year 97-65, leading the club to its first AL East title since their World Series championship season of 2007. The 97 wins were also the second most for the team since 1978. Farrell, of course, was the Red Sox pitching coach under Terry Francona, and his impact was immediately evident, especially among the starting staff which saw its ERA decrease by nearly two runs from the prior season. Nobody benefited from having Farrell back more than Game 1 starter Jon Lester, who was a miserable 9-14 in 2012, but bounced back to go 15-8 this past season, while pitching to a 3.75 ERA. Lester gave up two runs in 7 2/3 innings in a win over the Rays in the ALDS and has held the opposition to a .199 batting average with 46 strikeouts to 16 walks in 49 2/3 postseason innings. Including his Game 1 win over the Rays, Lester is 8-2 with a 2.77 ERA in 14 starts since the All-Star break. Hes also allowed three runs or less in eight of his nine postseason starts. "The more serious the game is, the better he gets," said catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia. "Sometimes when youre facing teams when you maybe dont have the record or the lineup isnt as strong, maybe you can let off a little bit. But he has the ability to turn it on whenever he wants. So if hes in trouble, hes got no problem getting out of it." Detroit, meanwhile, is back in this round for the third straight season after a hard-fought five-game win over the Oakland Athletics in the ALDS. Justin Verlander flirted with a no-hitter in the clincher and wound up giving up two hits over eight scoreless innings in the Tigers 3-0 win. "I can usually tell by the look on his face and his demeanor prior to a game when hes zeroed in and locked in," said Tigers manager Jim Leyland, "and he was locked in tonight." Now the Tigers turn their attention toward the Red Sox, as they try to get back to the World Series for a second straight season. Detroit went 93-69 to win a third straight AL Central crown thanks to another amazing campaign from Miguel Cabrera, and despite a wildly inconsistent season from Verlander. While Verlander struggled, the rest of the staff thrived, specifically right- hander Max Scherzer, who enjoyed the best year of his career, as he won an MLB-best 21 games, while pitching to a 2.90 ERA and striking out 240 batters over a career-high 214 innings. In Verlander, Scherzer and Anibal Sanchez the Tigers produced three 200- strikeout pitchers on the same team for just the third time in history, the first since the 1969 Astros. Sanchez, who led the AL with a 2.57 ERA, will get the start for the Tigers in Game 1 against the Red Sox. Often overlooked because of his high-profile teammates, Sanchez was one of the best pitchers in either league over the second half of the season, going 7-2 with a 2.20 ERA after the All-Star break. Sanchez, though, was rocked by the As in the ALDS to the tune of six runs -- earned -- in 4 1/3 innings. "Its a big day for me, especially because Im going to start the series again," Sanchez said. "This team, a pretty good team. But I think every day is different. I need to keep working. I need to be focused tomorrow." Detroit left-hander Phil Coke has been added to the roster for the ALCS after missing the division series with elbow problems. Coke gives the Tigers another option out of the bullpen, although he struggled this year, going 0-5 with a 5.40 ERA. Right-hander Luke Putkonen was left off the ALCS roster to make room for Coke. Right-hander Bruce Rondon, who also missed the division series against Oakland with elbow trouble, is still out. Boston and Detroit have been playing one another since 1901, but amazingly this is the first postseason matchup between the charter AL clubs. The Tigers were 4-3 against the Red Sox in 2013, winning three of four at Comerica Park in June and dropping two of three at Fenway in September. In fact, the last time they met Boston smacked eight home runs and won, 20-4. Adidas Tyler Toffoli Jersey . -- The San Francisco 49ers have re-signed cornerback Perrish Cox to a one-year contract. Adidas Dave Taylor Jersey .C. -- Kevin Harvick won his first career pole at Darlington Raceway on Friday as he looks to chase his first Southern 500.MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- It was tough to tell what Remi Dibo enjoyed more: being the centerpiece of West Virginias 3-point show against No. 11 Iowa State, or clamping down on Big 12 scoring leader Melvin Ejim. Dibo scored a career-high 20 points to lead the Mountaineers to a 102-77 victory Monday night, the Cyclones most lopsided loss of the season. Dibo went 6 of 8 from beyond the arc as West Virginia tied a season high with 13 3-pointers. A native of France who finished his high school career in southern West Virginia and played last season at Wyomings Casper College, the 6-foot-7 Dibo made his fourth straight start and fifth overall. "I think my teammates did a great job of finding me," Dibo said. "I think its been a while. Theyve been doing a good job finding me and I was not responding. But I did today." Juwan Staten added 19 points and Eron Harris and Terry Henderson each had 16 points for the Mountaineers (15-10, 7-5 Big 12). Iowa State (18-5, 6-5) had five players in double figures, led by Georges Niangs 17 points. But Ejim, coming off a Big 12-record 48 points and a career-high 18 rebounds against TCU, was guarded by Dibo and held to six points -- 12 below his average -- on 1-of-9 shooting. "We just knew we couldnt let him score 40 points on us," Dibo said. "We had to make an effort on him." The Cyclones fell behind by double digits midway through the first half and trailed by as many as 32 points late in the game. It was the most lopsided loss for Iowa State since a 23-point setback at Texas in January 2011. "It was pretty much, start to finish, just a poor effort on our end," Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg said. West Virginia shot 54 per cent (35 of 65) from the field, hit a season-high for points and improved to 2-1 amid a stretch of four straight games against ranked opponents heading into a matchup Saturday at No. 19 Texas. Iowa States outside scoring was virtually nonexistent until it was too late. The Cyclones were held to 37 per cent shooting (26 of 71) in losing their fourth road conference game.dddddddddddd West Virginia coach Bob Huggins called it "by far the best" defensive effort from his team this season. Dustin Hogue added 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Cyclones while Deandre Kane had 14 points, Matt Thomas 13 and Monte Morris 10. Kane, a Pittsburgh native, had more than 50 relatives and friends in attendance. He went 1-2 against the Mountaineers while he played at instate rival Marshall and was booed and taunted whenever he touched the ball. "Tonight we just didnt have it," Hoiberg said. "I dont know what it was. This group has been very focused and given everything all year." West Virginias lack of bench scoring had stood out in a double-digit loss to No. 7 Kansas on Saturday. On Monday, the Mountaineers reserves outscored Iowa States 27-15. "We had pretty much the same shots against Kansas, but we didnt make them," Huggins said. "Today, we made them." Trailing 52-33 at halftime, Iowa State put together its best stretch and closed the gap to 58-44 5 minutes into the second half before West Virginia again pulled away. The Cyclones went 4 minutes between field goals after that, and West Virginia got a big boost from its bench to keep the pressure on. Freshman Nathan Adrian made two baskets and two free throws, and Kevin Noreen doubled his season scoring average with a layup and two free throws. Dibos 3-pointer with 6:53 left gave the Mountaineers their largest lead, 86-54. "We just stuck to the game plan," Dibo said. "We couldnt let them make a run to come back. We knew from the past every time we had a lead, we had let teams come back, and we knew we couldnt let that happen." The only drama for West Virginia came when Harris was ejected for a flagrant foul with 4:25 left. After the game, West Virginias players went into the student section to celebrate. Toronto FC and the Raptors are both

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner apologized Wednesday for his teams failure to make the playoffs for a second straight year and said New York is talking with general manager Brian Cashman about a new contract.Hampered by injuries to four-fifths of their starting rotation and an offence that was 13th in scoring in the 15-team American League, the Yankees went 84-78 and missed consecutive postseasons for the first time since 1992 and 93.I apologize. We did not do the job this year, Steinbrenner said on The Michael Kay Show, which is simulcast by the YES Network and ESPN New York radio. We know what you expect of us, and we expect the same thing of ourselves. We certainly did what we thought we could do in the off-season to field a pretty good team come April 1, but it didnt work out.Offseason offensive additions didnt have the anticipated impact. Brian McCann hit .232; Carlos Beltran was limited by an elbow injury and batted .233; Jacoby Ellsbury hit .252 after the All-Star break, dropping his average to .271.I would hold me responsible before anybody else, Steinbrenner said. I think they were good signings, and I think theyll turn out to be good signings.Cashman is completing a three-year contract worth about $9 million. Steinbrenner said the team and Cashman are discussion a new deal but have not reached an agreement. The 47-year-old has been GM since replacing Bob Watson in February 1998.Brian I believe is a good one, Steinbrenner said. Every general manager has signings. Some work out better than others. But everything he did in July for the most part, bringing in (Chase) Headley, bringing in (Brandon) McCarthy, (Martin) Prado, I think they all helped the team stay in it. ... I think the (Michael) Pineda trade is looking to be a really good one, as long as he stays healthy.Steinbrenner said the Yankees hope to add a shortstop to replace retired captain Derek Jeter and a starting pitcher to bolster their rotation. Ivan Nova is not expected to be ready until May following elbow ligament-replacement surgery. He said its hard to predict what Alex Rodriguez will produce following his one-year suspension for violations of baseballs drug agreement and labour contract.I dont think we can have any expectations. ... If hes healthy, he can contribute, Steinbrenner said. What hes going to be able to do playing third base remains to be seen, but if hes healthy hes going to be an asset to the team and I would never not want that.Steinbrenner wouldnt speculate whether the Yankees would feel an obligation to keep A-Rod if hes not healthy because New York owes him $61 million for the next three seasons.Lets cross that bridge when he come to it, he said.Steinbrenner did not attend Jeters final home game last week, which drew some criticism.Im not going to get into the reasons why I couldnt be there, he said. Its perfectly understandable for people to be upset about that.Steinbrenner said no decisions have been made on whether changes should be made to the coaching staff and evaluations are ongoing. He admits his late father often acted differently.I dont think its a newsflash that Im different from George in a lot of ways, he said. I do tend to be a little less rash when it comes to firing people. Rashaan Evans Jersey . The 36-year-old Colts receiver is going back to the playoffs as a division champion. I had an amazing career

INDIANAPOLIS - Lance Stephenson wiggled his hips after a nasty crossover move. Paul George gestured to the crowd with his shooting eye and Danny Granger showed everyone he still has the touch. This is starting to get fun for the Eastern Conferences winningest team. Stephenson finished with his third triple-double this season, George scored 24 points and Granger made four 3-pointers as the Pacers overwhelmed Boston 106-79 on Sunday to ruin coach Brad Stevens return to his hometown. "Were starting the game off with high energy and were ending the game with high energy and in between were maintaining that energy," George said. "It wears teams down, and I think thats been the case these past couple games." Indiana (22-5) is taking full advantage of it, too. Since losing at home for the first time Monday and then losing at Miami on Wednesday, their first back-to-back losses of the season, the Pacers have been almost untouchable. They led for the final 38 minutes against Boston (12-17) and the final 41 against Houston on Friday. They have the best record in the East and are making things look easy. Stephenson finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists and remains the NBAs only player with multiple triple-doubles this season. George, who is lobbying for Stephenson to make the All-Star team, has made 16 of 29 shots over the last two games. Roy Hibbert had 15 points and 12 rebounds, and Granger, who missed all but five games last season with a left knee injury and the first 25 this season with a strained left calf, was 4 of 5 on 3s. He scored 12 against Boston and has 17 points this season after scoring 27 all of last season. Perhaps thats why Stevens, a lifelong Indiana fan, called this the best Pacers team hes seen in his lifetime. "Adding Granger is scary," Stevens said. "I think the more comfortable he gets, the better theyll be. I think theyre already if not the leader for the hunt, theyre in the hunt." The resume proves it. Indiana has won two straight, beating the Rockets, a Western Conference contender, and the Celtics, who entered Sunday tied for the Atlantic Division lead, by a combined 60 points. The 33 and 27-point victory margins are the two most lopsided wins Indiana has had all season, though the Pacers beat Milwaukee by 27 last month, and its only the second time theyve topped 100 points in consecutive games this season. The Pacers also will have a chance to pad their lead over the next couple of weeks. Sundays game marked the start of a 12-game stretch in which the Pacers will face 11 teams that currently have losing records. "We are a tough basketball team, we know that we can play, we know that we can improve," George said. "We are having fun out there because we are getting to know each other better." Thats a scary thought, even for Stevens, who was hoping for a much happier homecoming. The Celtics coach grew up in Zionsville, a suburb on the citys northwest side, and led nearby Butler to back-to-back national championship games before taking the Celtics job in July. During pregame introductions, he received a warm, polite reception from the home state crowd, which included his successor, Butler coach Brandon Miller, and his former athletic director, Barry Collier. The Pacers defence wasnt nearly as welcoming. Avery Bradley led the Celtics with 13 points, while Jeff Green and Courtney Lee each scored 11. Nobody else reached double figures. Stephenson was a showman all night, making nifty behind-the-back passes and at times dribbling wildly to shed defenders. So when he hit a 20-foot jumper after sending a Celtics defender sprawling on the ground early in the fourth quarter, he responded to the crowds ovation by wiggling his hips. Pacers coach Frank Vogel likes Stephenson for another reason. "Hes such a gifted passer and playmaker, he gives us a real edge," Vogel said. Boston started well, taking a 15-10 lead after going on a 7-0 run. Things went downhill fast. Indiana finished the first quarter on a 10-2 spurt to take a 20-17 lead. After the Celtics rallied to tie the score at 23 with 8:49 left in the first half, Granger hit two 3-pointers to spur a 15-1 run that turned the game and gave Indiana a commanding 38-24 lead with 5:08 to play in the first half. "Were not a team to make excuses," Jared Sullinger said. "Indiana just came out and kicked our behind. We just have to play better." Notes: The Pacers have won three of the last four and five of the last seven in the series. ... The Celtics have played back-to-back games eight times this season and have now been swept five times. ... Twelve of Indianas 22 wins have come by 10 or more points. Griffin Reinhart Jersey . He blocked a shot in the final minutes of Game 6 of the 2006 NBA Finals, then wriggled on the floor in what appeared to be celebration for a few seconds. Turns out, it was anger. Mourning was unimpressed by his chase-down block of Dallas Jason Terry with 8:55 left in the game where the Miami Heat would clinch their first NBA title. Instead, his memorable air-punching, arms-flailing reaction was borne from how Heat teammate Gary Payton had thrown the ball away seconds earlier and then argued with a referee at such a critical moment in the game. His fire was on full display in that moment. And it was that fire that led him to the Basketball Hall of Fame "So I had to sprint back to try to cover his butt for making that mistake, and I was mad," Mourning said. "Then I got up and I was like, Gary, what are you doing, man? Oh, I was mad. Maybe like two people really know why I was acting that way. The thing is, I was cursing Gary out. Thats what happened." After a career where he averaged 17.1 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.8 blocked shots, the 6-foot-10 Mourning will be part of the class enshrined in Springfield, Massachusetts on Friday night, when the surest bet in sports will be that his speech will exceed the 10-minute recommendation he was given for his remarks. "I think I deserve it," Mourning said, laughing. Few would disagree. He was a seven-time All-Star, is one of only eight players to win the defensive player of the year award at least twice, an Olympic gold medallist and has already had his No. 33 jersey retired by the Heat in a star-studded ceremony that went way longer than planned, slightly raising the ire of an Orlando Magiic team that wasnt planning on a never-ending halftime that night in 2009.dddddddddddd "He had to be the first one to have his jersey retired by this franchise," Heat President Pat Riley said. "He earned that, many times over." But Mournings story is more about the journey than any statistic or award. He was raised by a foster mother who took him and 48 other kids into her home. From there, Mourning became a star at Georgetown, then an NBA icon who couldnt even be derailed by a kidney disease that necessitated a transplant while still in the prime of his career, and finally a champion with the Heat. "You dont think about going to the Hall of Fame. Its your reward," Mourning said. "This was the last thing on my mind. I had an amazing career. The journey was spectacular for me, personally. If no one else saw it that way, then so be it." Mourning, 44, will be presented by John Thompson, his coach at Georgetown, and Riley, his coach with the Heat. Thompson and Riley are two of the people who Mourning credits most for making him what he is. The other is Fannie Threet, the foster mother who died last year at the age of 98 and the person who Mourning speaks with more reverence for than anyone else. Thompson, Riley and the woman he still calls "Miss Threet" might seem like three wildly different people, but Mourning sees parallels in them all -- mainly discipline, devotion and a balance between toughness and compassion. Add them up, you get Mourning, who plans to spend his speech thanking just about everyone he can remember. "Its the pinnacle of the sport," Mourning said. "And outside of the birth of my children and winning a championship, its the pinnacle of it all." DENVER -- Lance Lynn had such good stuff he could hardly be hit. Matt Adams was so dialed in at the plate he gave his pitcher all the offensive support he needed. The perfect combination for a rout and a rare Coors Field shutout. Lynn allowed three hits in eight innings and Adams provided the spark with two homers and a career-high six RBIs as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the slumping Colorado Rockies 8-0 on Monday night. Lynn (8-5) struck out seven and walked none before being taken out for the ninth after throwing 108 pitches. Its the first time Colorado has been held scoreless at home since July 2. "He was in complete control," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. Adams big night included a two-run single in the third, a solo shot in the fifth and a three-run homer in the seventh. This was the third multihomer game of his career. "Its just a continuation of how Ive felt recently," Adams said. "The big thing that Im happy about is Im laying off the sliders and the curve balls from the lefties. Im trying to make them come over the plate a little bit more instead of chasing what they want me to chase." Jhoulys Chacin (1-6) struggled with his control, allowing five runs in six innings. He also walked three and hit a batter. "Whenever you walk a lot of guys, and you dont make good pitches, especially against a team like St. Louis, youre going to pay for it," Chacin said. Corey Dickerson had two of the hits for Colorado, which has now dropped seven straight. This was the second time in five days the Rockies have been perplexed by a pitcher, with Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw throwing a no-hitter last Wednesday. Mixing a cutter with a sinker, Lynn bottled up one of the most potent lineups in the majors. He surrendered a one-out single to Dickerson in the first and then retired 16 straight until Charlie Blackmon and Dickerson had back-to-back singles in the sixth. Lynn got out of the jam by getting Troy Tulowitzki to fly out. "When you get a good, live fastball like (Lynn) had tonight, youre going to get a lot of guys out," Drrew Stubbs said.dddddddddddd"He didnt make mistakes." Randy Choate got the first two outs in the ninth and Jason Motte struck out Tulowitzki to end the game. Tulowitzki flung his bat in the air in frustration. Once again, Lynn sparkled at Coors Field. He hasnt allowed a homer at the hitter friendly park in the 77 batters hes faced spanning three starts. The right-hander was aided by some fine fielding, too, like centre fielders Jon Jays sliding grab on the warning track in the seventh on Justin Morneaus deep drive. "Thats a good hitting lineup, especially here, in their ball park, where the ball travels a little bit more," Lynn said. "But as a pitcher you cant think about it. Youve just got to try to make your pitch. "I was making good pitches and when youre doing that its a good feeling." Dickerson was the only Rockies hitter who could solve him. "I felt pretty comfortable up there," Dickerson said. "But I think righties were having a tough time picking (his fastball) up." Adams had the first six-RBI performance by a Cardinals player since David Freese on June 7, 2012, at Houston. Matt Holliday added an RBI double against his former team. For the Rockies it was another stinging defeat in a month filled with them. Theyre now 6-15 in June. "If I had an answer, if any of us did, it wouldve already happened," Stubbs said. "At some point, its got to turn around. Hopefully, its sooner rather than later." NOTES: Cards MGR Mike Matheny said LHP Marco Gonzales will make his major league debut on Wednesday. Gonzales grew up in nearby Fort Collins and his father, Frank Gonzales, is a minor league pitching coach for the Rockies. ... Weiss is hopeful RHP Christian Bergman (bruised left hand) can make his start on Wednesday. Bergman was hit by a line drive on his glove hand last Friday. "Hes made a lot of improvement in the last 24-to-48 hours," Weiss said. ... Tulowitzki was named the captain for the National League during the Home Run Derby at the All-Star game. FRANKFURT, Germany -- Max Meyer and Jefferson Farfan scored in the second half to give Schalke a 2-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga on Friday. The victory strengthened Schalkes hold on third place and pulled it even on points with second-place Borussia Dortmund ahead of its match at Bayern Munich. Schalke dominated the match and wasted a dozen good chances. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar had a penalty saved by Eintracht goalkeeper Kevin Trapp, while Schalke twice hit the woodwork. Trapp also saved Huntelaars header from two meters out. But Schalke broke the deadlock in the 59th. Sead Kolasinac fired against the post, Trapp saved the follow-up but Meyer slotted home. Farfan buried a free kick from 20 metres (yards) in injury time to seal the win. Christian Laettner Jersey . At quarterback, all agree that Andy Dalton has been a wonderful surprise, but to truly progress he has to play his best in the playoffs. The two losses in the wildcard rounds keep the evaluation on Dalton open -- just like it did for Peyton Manning many years ago and Matt Ryan until last year. Avery Bradley Jersey . She still remembers the massive roar of the home crowd when the Canadians walked out on the pitch before 47,784 fans at Commonwealth Stadium in 2002. Lang expects a similar reception for the Canadian team as the host nation at this years tournament, which begins Tuesday. http://www.basketballpistonsauthority.co...ns-jersey-c-13/. Atletico Madrid made it three wins from three thanks to a double from in-form striker Diego Costa in a 3-0 victory at Austria Vienna, leaving the Spanish side on the brink of the last 16 already to continue its brilliant start to the season. Grant Hill Jersey . Picard had a goal and two assists to help Canada improve to 2-0 at the tournament. Seven different players scored for the two-time defending champions. "Today all four lines played excellent," said head coach Laura Schuler. Jon Leuer Jersey . Sterling was banned for life and fined US$2.5 million by the NBA on Tuesday for racist comments the league says he made in a recorded conversation. Nash, who plays for the rival L.A. Lakers, spoke as a representative of current NBA players at a press conference assembled by Sacramento mayor and National Basketball Players Association adviser Kevin Johnson. The Montreal Canadiens will try to get back in the Eastern Conference Final series with the New York Rangers when the two collide in Game 3 at Madison Square Garden this evening. Listen to the game live on TSN Radio 690 at 8pm et/5pm pt and watch live coverage of the post-game news conferences on TSN.ca. The Canadiens, who are without the services of No. 1 goaltender Carey Price, will have 24-year-old Dustin Tokarski between the pipes again tonight with Peter Budaj serving as the backup. Tokarski performed admirably in his postseason debut on Monday, but it wasnt enough to prevent Montreal from falling behind two games to none. Henrik Lundqvist outdueled the Canadiens netminder, making 40 saves to anchor New York to its fifth consecutive victory. Tokarski, who had played in three games earlier in the season, allowed all three goals on 30 shots in his first taste of NHL playoff action. "We looked at his record. Tokarski is a winner and we know that from his past record. I thought he played very well tonight," said Montreal head coach Michel Therrien. "I liked our team effort, which was great tonight. We were engaged. But the reason we lost tonight was Lundqvist, he stole the game tonight. We had lots of chances to score but Lundqvist made key saves." Tokarski became the first goaltender to make his playoff debut in the Conference Final or later since the NHL expanded to a four-round postseason format in 1975. Price is out for the remainder of the Conference Final due to a lower-body injury suffered in Game 1. Forward Thomas Vanek, who has no points, one shot and a minus-3 rating, took turns skating on the fourth line during practice Wednesday. Therrien told reporters not to read into it, as it all could change again ahead of Game 3. Max Pacioretty scored for Montreal at 6:14 of the first period, but McDonagh answered with his tally just 17 seconds later. The Canadiens put a ton of pressure on New York in the opening 20 minutes, but Lundqvist stopped 13-of-14 shots in the period and Nash would score late in the stanza to give the Rangers the lead for good. "Hes the only reason we were still in the game because they had tremendous push," said New York head coach Alain Vigneault about Lundqvist. Montreal was 0-for-4 on the man advantage and has failed to score over seven chances in the first two games. The Rangers went 1-for-3 on the power play and are 4-for-10 in the series. "We had a number of opportunities to put ourselves in a good position, but they were optimistic and capitalized on their opportunities," said Habs defenseman P.K. Subban. "The difference is, we didnt. Were getting pucks to the net, but not getting the bounces right now. We have to stick with it, because sooner or later the pucks will ggo in for us.dddddddddddd" New York played without forward Derick Brassard, who suffered an injury early in Game 1 and was replaced in the lineup by Daniel Carcillo on Monday. He skated Wednesday and Vigneault said hes is day-to-day. "It was good to get back out there with my teammates," Brassard said Wednesday. "I havent talked to the medical staff, well see whats going to happen." Vigneault also said winger Benoit Pouliot "is good" for tonight after taking a maintenance day on Wednesday. New York is 10-2 all-time when winning the first two games of a seven-game playoff series, including a 4-1 mark when claiming the first two tests on the road. New York is 5-0 since falling behind 3-1 in its semifinal set against Pittsburgh. Mondays win improved the Rangers to 6-3 on the road in these playoffs, marking the first time the Blueshirts have won six away games in one postseason since they last won the Stanley Cup in 1994. The Rangers, however, are just 4-3 on home ice in the playoffs. The Habs are 4-2 as the guest. Tonights tilt is the first of two straight at the Garden, as the clubs are set to meet Sunday in Manhattan for Game 4. Ryan McDonagh posted a goal and an assist in Mondays win, while Martin St. Louis and Rick Nash also scored for the Rangers. Derek Stepan added two assists in the victory. McDonagh has six points (2G, 4A) in the first two games of this series. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, McDonagh is the first Rangers defenseman to record six points in a two-game span in the postseason since Brian Leetch in 1995. Leetch registered three points in consecutive games in New Yorks opening round series against the Quebec Nordiques in 1995. "Not everyone plays consistently at the level you want, and I can say the same thing about me," said McDonagh. "But other guys stepped up and its a good thing to win both games here. You focus on one game at a time, but weve really been ready to push ourselves to consistently to put us in this manner and give ourselves a chance in every game." This is the first postseason encounter between these Original Six rivals since the opening round of the 1996 playoffs when New York won in six games. The clubs have split 14 previous playoff series, but the Rangers have now won six straight postseason games against Montreal, becoming just the fourth team in NHL history to take six playoff tilts in a row versus the storied Canadiens franchise. Both teams are attempting to get back to the Cup Final for the first time since the 1990s. Montreal was the last team based in Canada to win it all in 1993, but has yet to return to the Cup Final, and the Rangers are aiming to get back to the final stage for the first time since 1994. The English Football Association says

CLEVELAND -- Yordano Venturas dominating performance Friday night produced plenty of superaltives. "He was extraordinary," Kansas City manager Ned Yost said after the rookie right-hander pitched 8 1-3 stellar innings in the Royals 7-1 win over the Cleveland Indians. Ventura (6-7) blanked the Indians on four hits until Michael Brantley hit a leadoff homer in the ninth. He was pulled after Jason Kipnis one-out single. Ventura allowed six hits and struck out four in the longest outing of his career. Indians centre fielder Michael Bourn had one of the hits off Ventura, a double in the eighth. "Well he throws 100 (mph), first of all," Bourn said. "He has a good changeup and a good curveball. We had a couple chances but for the most part he was on tonight." Mike Moustakas, who hit a three-run homer in the sixth gave Kansas City a 5-0 lead, was also impressed with Ventura. "Hes got such electric stuff," Moustakas said. "Thats what hes capable of doing." Salvador Perez and Christian Colon, making his first major-league start, had three hits apiece while Lorenzo Cain snapped an 0 for 11 skid with an RBI single in the third and a run-scoring double in the fifth. The Royals, who are a major league-best 11-2 on the road since June 2, rode Ventura to their latest win away from home. He retired the first 10 hitters before Brantley singled with one out in the the fourth. Carlos Santanas single moved Brantley to third, but Kipnis bounced into a double play. Ventura entered the ninth with 103 pitches, making it an easy decision for Yost to let him start the inning. "I wanted to throw the complete game shutout, but I couldnt do it," Ventura said through teammate Bruce Chen, who translated for the pitcher, "I was getting ahead of the hitters early in the game. They made some really good plays behind me and that gave me a lot of energy." Ventura, who finished with 113 pitches, came within two outs of recording Kansas Citys first complete game of the season. "I wasnt going to take him past 120 pitches," Yost said. "After the home run it was like, OK the next guy who gets on thats it. He pitched very well." Josh Tomlin (5-6), coming off a one-hit, no-walk, 11-strikeout performance against Seattle, allowed five runs and 11 hits in 5 2-3 innings. Moustakas homer to right on a 3-2 pitch broke the game open. The rally began on singles by Perez and Alcides Escobar. Colon, a late addtion to the lineup when second baseman Omar Infante was scratched with lower back tightness, was 3 for 4, including a triple in the second for his first major league hit. Colon added a double in the fifth and an RBI double in the ninth. "That was a lot of fun," he said. "I was taking my ground balls (in pregame activities) and was told I was going to play." Ventura has allowed three runs in 21 innings in three career starts against Cleveland. He held the Indians to one run in seven innings in a 4-1 win on June 11 in Kansas City. Ventura gave up two runs and seven hits in four innings Los Angeles Angels in his last start, an outing that was cut short by a four-hour rain delay. He had pitched seven innings in each of his previous three starts. The Royals, who are second in the AL Central, are 3-1 on a nine-game road trip and lead third-place Cleveland by four games. The Indians, who opened a 10-game homestand, have lost four straight at home after winning 11 of 12 at Progressive Field. Cleveland was swept by Detroit in a three-game series June 20-22. Tomlin turned in the best performance of his career against the Mariners last Saturday. He retired the first 12 hitters before allowing a leadoff single to Kyle Seager in the fifth, Seattles only baserunner. Tomlins gem marked the sixth time an Indians pitcher recorded 11 strikeouts with no walks in a shutout over the past 100 years. It was also only the third time since 2002 that a pitcher has recorded a one-hit shutout with at least 11 strikeouts and no walks. Kansas City left fielder Alex Gordon was hitless in four at-bats and is in a 2-for-36 slump. Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera was 0 for 4 and is in a 4 for 35 skid. NOTES: The Indians announced the game as a sellout, their third of the season. ... Indians C Yan Gomes, a native of Brazil, wore his countrys soccer jersey during batting practice. He kept an eye on the scoreboard, which showed Brazils 2-1 win over Colombia in the World Cup. ... Raul Ibanez, signed by the Royals on Monday, started in right field.
