Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Hi Kerry, With a lot of playoff games this year already going deep into overtime, weve all heard talk about how no player wants to be the one who makes a mistake prompted by exhaustion that leads to the game-winning goal. But to what extent does all this extra play time affect the officials? How much do they feel the physical and mental fatigue caused by a game heading into its second or third overtime period, and is this related to the perception - real or imagined - that officials tend to "swallow their whistles" in OT? Best,Mark Hill Mark: Fatigue was much more of an issue to contend with in the one referee system when we chased the play from end to end and didnt get much of an opportunity for a rest. A refs best friend can be a moving puck. Whenever possible, I attempted to force players to "move it"! Aside from enhancing the entertaining value of the game another upside of sustained action was that players gave and received hits with less likelihood of retaliation and scrums developing. On occasion I wore a heart monitor and during three to five minute runs without a whistle the readings would be sustained between 165-175 bpm. By comparison the highest my heart rate ever got in the two referee system was 98 bpm. There should be no reason (in the two-ref system) where physical fatigue might negatively impact the decision making process for an official regardless how many overtime periods are played. The mental aspect of a referees performance is a whole different kettle of fish! While players dont want to become the "goat" by making a bad play or mistake, the referees internal struggle is all about rendering a decision that might be perceived as a game ending bad call. (You notice I said perceived.) The best remedy in dealing with this pressure is for the official to maintain a rock solid focus of concentration by remaining in the moment and react to call penalties whenever they occur. Once a ref stops refereeing and puts his whistle away he becomes a spectator instead of an enforcer of the playing rules. Each referee can feel intense pressure to make sure any call he makes is viewed as a "must call" in the late stages and overtime. The referees best work is done well in advance of the late stages of a game by maintaining the expected standard of enforcement and to keep the players in check throughout the entire game. The best deterrent against infractions being committed is "fear" a ref can instill in players that he will call the penalty whenever it is committed. When that is achieved players tend to play much more disciplined. The onus is placed more squarely on the players not to commit infractions once the referees enforce the rules more consistently and when expectations are met. I notice a difference in these playoffs as to which referees the players respond to and those they take full liberties with. Once the penalty standard slides and obvious infractions are let go it is extremely difficult for the referee to make a call in the late stages unless it involves a scoring opportunity, a puck over the glass or a major infraction. At times such as this the referee crew become spectators and fly on a wing and a prayer in hopes that the players will not do something really stupid that might force a call. If the referee chooses to turn his whistle into a fossil the worst thing he can do is upset the apple cart with a penalty call that doesnt have a direct bearing on the play or is of less quality than what he previously has let go. We saw a prime example of this with fewer than two minutes remaining in Game 4 of the Habs-Lightning series. While it is difficult to deny that the trip by Cedric Paquette on Michael Bournival was a legitimate foul, given the countless infractions that were not penalized, the referee(s) were subjected to justifiable ridicule for calling a trip in the corner of the rink at that time of the game. It is important to note there have been some real solid performances by the zebras in games thus far. The officials we notice most however are ones that stop refereeing the game and employ a standard of enforcement that resembles shifting sand. This isnt a result of fatigue; physical or mental. There is an answer to this dilemma. The referees have to be given clear direction by the Officiating Management to know and maintain the expected penalty throughout the entire game. In this regard the officials need to be better coached and held accountable when the expected standard is not met. Finally, when the officials do the job and make the tough calls they need to know they will be supported. Custom Minnesota Vikings Jerseys . PHILADELPHIA -- Reid Brignacs first start for the Philadelphia Phillies ended with him being mobbed by his teammates. Brignacs RBI single in the bottom of the 14th inning gave the Phillies a 6-5 win over the New York Mets on Friday night. Domonic Brown hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs for the Phillies, who snapped the Mets six-game winning streak at Citizens Bank Park, dating to last season. Marlon Byrd reached second when right fielder Chris Young dropped his fly ball for an error leading off the 14th. Carlos Ruiz followed with a single to centre off Jenrry Mejia (4-2) that sent Byrd to third. After pinch-hitter Cesar Hernandez was intentionally walked, Brignac drove an opposite-field shot that one-hopped the wall in left. Brignac rounded first base and kept running into shallow right field before he was swarmed by teammates. "I was just messing around, trying to make them catch me," Brignac said. "It felt great coming through." Brignac started at third base for Cody Asche, who is on the disabled list. Hernandez had played third since Asche got hurt. "That was a big swing," manager Ryne Sandberg said. Young refused to blame the wind for his error, even though it was blowing in hard by the end of the game. "I was looking dead at it when it was coming down," Young said. "I cant explain it. I have no idea how I dropped a routine fly ball, but it happened." Justin De Fratus (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings to earn the win. Phillies starter A.J. Burnett had a season-high 11 strikeouts, but allowed five runs and five hits in seven innings. He had to pitch out of trouble often because of six walks. "Im missing here and there, but six is a lot," Burnett said. "I have some work to do." Mets rookie Rafael Montero lasted just 3 2-3 innings, allowing four runs -- three earned -- and seven hits in the shortest of his four career starts. Coming off a 10-strikeout performance last Sunday against Arizona, Montero didnt fan any of Philadelphias strikeout-prone batters. The Phillies struck out 15 times in a 4-1 loss to the Mets on Thursday night. Bobby Abreu hit a two-run double to give the Mets a 5-4 lead in the fifth after David Wright and Curtis Granderson struck out with two runners on. But the Phillies answered in the bottom half against Daisuke Matsuzaka. Byrd walked, went to third on Ruizs double and scored on Browns groundout to tie it at 5. Byrd walked to start Philadelphias fourth and Ruiz singled. Brown then hit a high drive out to right to give the Phillies a 4-3 lead. Brown, an NL All-Star last year, was hitting .199 before connecting for his fourth homer this season. Brown hit 12 of his team-high 27 homers last May. Burnett helped himself with a leadoff single in the third. He went to third base when Abreu booted Jimmy Rollins single to right for an error. Chase Utley followed with an RBI groundout to cut it to 3-1. The Mets took a 3-0 lead in the second on Lucas Dudas RBI double, Travis dArnauds RBI groundout and Ruben Tejadas RBI single. NOTES: Abreu stole second base in the eighth for his 400th career steal. The call was upheld after a video review. ... Rollins had two hits, moving within 12 of passing Mike Schmidt for first on the Phillies career list. ... The Mets are playing five consecutive days in the same city on the road for the first time. ... Granderson was 0 for 3 with a walk. He is in an 0-for-19 slump. ... Burnett has walked five or more batters in four of his 12 starts. He had double-digit strikeouts for the 33rd time in his career. ... RHP Jacob deGrom (0-2, 1.83 ERA) pitches for the Mets on Saturday against Kyle Kendrick (1-5, 4.04). deGrom struck out as a pinch-hitter in the 14th. Lorenzo Pellegrini Jersey . NEW ORLEANS -- Tyreke Evans sore right knee -- and long-term contract -- gave him every reason to sit out the final two games of a losing season with the Pelicans. Yet even as coaches and trainers encouraged him to rest, Evans was having none of it. Instead, he played some of his most relentless, productive and crowd-pleasing basketball of the season. He capped it off with 25 points and 10 assists on Wednesday night, and New Orleans closed out a difficult, injury riddled season with a 105-100 victory over the playoff-bound Houston Rockets. "I just want to have fun, man," Evans said. "It was my last game this year. ... I was hurt. I could have easily sat out, taken the back seat, but coach talked to us about finishing strong and thats what I wanted to do." Two nights earlier, Evans scored a career-high 41 points in a stunning victory over Oklahoma City. Against Houston, he enlivened the crowd with end-to-end drives, high razzle-dazzle dribbles and an array of midair contortions in order to get off shots in traffic near the basket. "He drove me crazy with some of his uh-oh plays, but these last two games, I hope he gets player of the week," coach Monty Williams said. "We needed these two games to go into the summer. He stepped up big-time and carried the team." The Rockets, who had already locked up the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference, rested James Harden, Chandler Parsons and Jeremy Lin. Still, the game was competitive as a number of role players sought to make the most of extended action. Troy Daniels, a rookie guard out of VCU whod scored only 20 points in 31 minutes all season, hit 6 3s and finished with a career-high 22 points. "I was ready to get out there," Daniels said. "It shows the coach has a lot of faith in me. Obviously I have a lot of work to do and a lot of progress to make, but it was a good start for me to get my confidence up." Evans gave New Orleans the lead for good with a driving layup with 2:35 left, then sealed it with a powerful move in which he wedged his way between Jordan Hamilton and Josh Powell for a running, right-handed hook from the lane. "It wasnt just about, We aint making the playoffs; lets pack it up," said guard Anthony Morrow, nodding at Evans. "When a guy who signs a long-term deal still plays the last two games of the season the way he did, it says a lot about him." Austin Rivers added 18 points and Morrow 15 for the Pelicans, who shot 52.4 per cent. Neither team led by more than single digits. New Orleans had the largest lead at 90-81, but Houston responded with a late 11-4 run that included 3s by Hamilton and Daniels, then took a brief 100-99 lead when Hamilton stole the ball and converted a fast-break lay-in with 2:51 left. Regular Houston starters Terrence Jones, who had 17 points and eight rebounds, and Patrick Beverly, who had 14 points, also played as if it mattered. Hamilton hit four 3s on his way to 14 points and Donatas Motiejunas had 11 points and 10 rebounds. "We werent going to change in the standings, so we played a bunch of guys that we hadnt played before," Rockets coach Kevin McHale said. "Its time to get some guys comfortable." Dwight Howard was among a minority of players who looked like as if he was merely going through the motions. He was 1 of 5 shooting, including a missed 3 after which he allowed a smirk, and grabbed four rebounds while turning the ball over three times. But Howard had more important things to think about with the fourth-seeded Rockets, who won 54 games this season, starting a playoff series against Portland on Sunday. Notes: After missing the past two games with a left ankle injury, Pelicans guard Brian Roberts played 4 minutes, long enough to make three free throws. That got him to 125 made foul shots this season, qualifying him for the official NBA lead in free throw shooting percentage at 93.9 per cent. "To have that, thats something thats special and something Ill never forget," Roberts said. ... Pelicans rookie C Jeff Withey tied a career high with five blocks. ... The loss was Houstons first against the Pelicans in four meetings this season. Robinson Cano Jersey .com) - Demario Richard posted four touchdowns and Kweishi Brown came up with a key late interception as No. Jean Segura Mariners Jersey . "We cannot stay the same way the whole season long," said Reyes. "This is not acceptable. Something needs to change because were a better team than what were showing right now. Former world champion Peter Ebdon produced a remarkable comeback to beat Gerard Greene 10-9 and keep his hopes of qualifying for the Crucible alive. The 45-year-old, who won the title in 2002, trailed Greene, who had beaten Jimmy White in the first round of qualifying, 9-3 in his World Snooker Championship qualifier but reeled off seven frames in a row to clinch victory just after 2am on Tuesday morning. A match that contained just three breaks of at least 50 came down to a final-frame safety battle with just the colours left on the table and it was Ebdon who potted the pivotal green before clearing up to move through to the final qualifying round.Two-time finalist Ali Carter came through a close and high-quality encounter with Cao Yupeng to progress to a clash with Dominic Dale, who saw off Oliver Lines 10-6.Cao had won his first-round match 10-0 against Rodion Judin and came from 7-4 down against Carter to level at 7-7. Carter then made breaks of 138 and 111, either side of an 84 from Cao, and wrapped up a 10-8 win with a 54 in frame 18.Chinas Ding Junhui had an easier time of things, rounding off a 10-1 win over Ross Muir with a break of 106.Up-and-coming pair Jack Lisowski and Kyren Wilson beat Rory McLeod and Martin ODonnell respectively but Luca Brecel was beaten 10-8 by Liam Highfield.Jamie Cope was beaten 10-5 by Liang Wenbo, Zhang Anda beat Mark Davis by the same score and Zhou Yuelong ousted Fergal OBrien 10-6.Matthew Selt lost a final-frame decider to Mitchell Mann while Dechawat Poomjaeng won 10-5 against Finlands Robin Hull.Thepchaiya Un-Nooh, who made headlines by missing the final black of a 147 attempt at the UK Championship, won 10-7 against Paul Davison. There were also wins for Matthew Stevens, Mark King, Ken Doherty and Ryan Day, the latter overcoming Alfie Burden 10-9. When a football season begins I am rejuvenated. In the months of August and September I enjoy the grind and through mid-October to November I am enamored with playoff talk and positioning. But it happens every year - when the final whistle is blown to end a season I say yee-haw! Good! Its playoff time. The regular season is the price you play for the playoff experience and opportunity to possess a ring. It is a long stressful price but to be in the playoffs its different. Gone is all discussion about records and who is an "all-star" and what I did or you did. Enter the reality that if you can win three games starting Sunday you can create a memory that will never fade and will always produce a smile when called upon. Football players pull together come playoff time and it is something unique to see and be a part of. Practices are quieter, meeting almost somber in atmosphere. Not that it does not happen during the regular season but in playoff football it is almost physical in its vibe. Over the next three weeks players re-dedicate, re-focus and realize that this is it. The season will be all worth it or just another year in the books. For Winnipeg and Edmonton the question is "Where do we go from here?" There is rebuilding and refining in football and Winnipeg is rebuilding. Edmonton is too but with Mike Reilly at quarterback they are a few steps ahead in the personnel department than the Bombers. Change started on Monday in Edmonton with the dismissal of head coach Kavis Reed as in the last three years, they went from 11-7, to 7-11, to 4-14 this season. I think Montreal is the most dangerous team in the playoffs. Statistically Calgary was the best defence as they allowed the fewest points, 413 over 18 games, about 22 a game. But Montreal has singular game-changing players who create turnovers.dddddddddddd Slowly but surely Jim Popp has improved his team and depending on quarterback Troy Smith, Montreal could win it all. In BC eleven wins in one football season is solid but that is the issue - it is solid but not dominant. It was an awkward season with the Lions. Not great, not bad, just weird. Good one week, not so good the next. No running game, good defence but bad red zone defence. Just seems like the lions never hit their stride this year as they have in the past. In Hamilton they are better and improving. I cant thank the University of Guelph enough for providing a home (and for being a home for a 220,000lb Purolator tackle hunger donation) but it is time for the Ticats to go back to Balsome Avenue and King Street. If they need some cheap labour come February I am around and willing. They need their home stadium back. Good team trying to be great but they are headed in the right direction. For the Riders of Regina the dream is still alive! BC won it all two years ago, and Toronto did last year and so can the 2013 Riders. At one point they were 8-1 and then adversity hit both on and off the field. On field is to be expected, off field can be tolerated. The Riders can win it all or could be one and done. Self control and emotional focus for key individual players are issues and must not be seen as an issue come Sunday. Finally, Toronto and BC. Not complicated at all. Just lay out a practice and meeting schedule that helps your team peak come the 17th of November. And hope that BC, Saskatchewan, Montreal and Hamilton beat each other up real good. No more tracking records or resting, or injuries or alibis. This is it - the best type of football, one game by one game by one game. Winner take all. CALGARY -- The Calgary Stampeders have officially signed quarterback Adrian McPherson. "Im very pleased to be able to add a quarterback with Adrians experience and skill set," Calgary head coach and general manager John Hufnagel said in a statement. "As we saw last season, depth at the quarterback position is vital and I believe Adrian provides excellent competition." McPherson, 30, spent five seasons with the Montreal Alouettes (2008-12), earning Grey Cup rings in 09 and 2010 with the club before being released to pursue other offers. Instead of landing another CFL job, the six-foot-three, 220-pound native of Bradenton, Fla., spent last season with the Tampa Bay Storm of the Arena Football League. McPherson appeared in 13 games, completing 238-of-385 passes (61.8 per cent) for 3,151 yards and 59 touchdowns with five interceptions. McPherson also added 415 yards rushing on 91 carries with 31 TDs, all team highs. In 2004, McPherson was the AFLs top rookie with the Indiana Firebirds. In Montreal, McPherson served mostly as the backup behind Anthony Calvillo, completing 145-of-247 passes for 1,505 yards with 10 TDs and six interceptions during his time with the Alouettes. He also rushed for 1,035 yards on 218 attempts, scoring 20 touchdowns. According to a report from the Vancouver Province, the Lions are expected to replace former DC Rich Stubler with defensive backs coach Mark Washington.VANCOUVER -- Goaltender Roberto Luongo expects to return to the Vancouver Canucks lineup soon and should be back in game shape in time for the 2014 Winter Olympics. Luongo took part in his first workout with the team Wednesday since suffering a "lower-body" injury Dec. 22 against Winnipeg. "This is my first team practice, so Im feeling good," said Luongo after a morning skate in advance of Vancouvers game against the Tampa Bay Lightning. "Everythings progressing really well right now." Luongo indicated the problem is not overly serious, but was still not healthy enough to play against Tampa Bay. Eddie Lack drew his third straight start, and fourth appearance since Luongo got hurt, while minor-league call-up Joacim Eriksson was given the backup assignment. Speaking to reporters for the first time since he was sidelined, Luongo revealed how he got hurt, but would not disclose the extent of the injury, other than to say it was a lower-body problem. "It was an Evander Kane shot down the wing that originally got me a little bit," said Luongo. "I tried to stay in the game a few more minutes and then kept feeling it during the play and felt it again on another shot." Luongo left the game late in the first period during a TV timeout after consulting with trainer Mike Bernstein. "After one of the TV timeouts, I made him aware there was a bit of an issue there, so he knew something was going on," said Luongo. "Sometimes those things subside, and sometimes they (dont). So I tried to keep playing until the next TV timeout pretty much and I went to the bench again annd spoke to Bernie.dddddddddddd" Luongo indicated he could return to Vancouvers lineup in the next few days. He added Fridays full practice with the team, as opposed to the light morning skate, will be important in determining his status. The prognosis indicates that he will be ready to play for Canadas Olympic team at Sochi in February. Meanwhile, Canucks coach John Tortorella said defenceman Dan Hamhuis should be selected to play for Canada in Sochi. Hamhuis, who attended Canadas summer orientation camp, has been one of Vancouvers best defenders this season. He logged 32:30 of ice time, while recording two assists, in a loss to Philadelphia on Monday. "(Playing in the Olympics) would be an awesome opportunity," said Hamhuis, a 31-year-old, Smithers, B.C., native. "Ive had the opportunity (to play for Canada), I think, seven times now. It never gets old. So Id love for an opportunity to do it at the Olympic level." Hamhuis has represented Canada in the junior and senior world championships, but a longed-for chance to play in the Olympics has eluded him. "Its always a great experience playing for Hockey Canada, and to do it at an Olympic level would just be that much better," he said. "To play with and against the best players in the world is every kids dream, and something I was hoping to do in 2010, but missed my opportunity. The team was very successful, and I would love to be a part of it this year." Note: Tortorella said Luongo and injured defencemen Alex Edler (undisclosed) and Andrew Alberts (upper-body), and winger Alex Burrows (jaw) are listed as day to day. NEW YORK -- While growing up in New Rochelle, N.Y., Kevin Shattenkirk watched Rangers defenceman Brian Leetch score many big goals. Given a chance to do the same at Madison Square Garden, the St. Louis Blues blue-liner made the most of his opportunity. Shattenkirk fired in the tiebreaking power-play goal early in the third period, and the Blues got the best of New York again in a 2-1 victory Thursday night. "There were a lot of emotions going through my body, but after the first couple of shifts it just felt like a hockey game again," Shattenkirk said. "Once the goal happened, even more of a relief. I was happy and you could hear some people cheering." Shattenkirk had his own rooting section. He secured 20 tickets himself, but estimated that 60 or 70 people he knows got tickets on their own to watch him play. He could hear them when he one-timed a pass from Alex Pietrangelo through a screen and past goalie Henrik Lundqvist -- a la Leetch -- at 3:09 for his eighth goal of the season. "There are a lot of things that I watched in him growing up, and he was a very special player. I try to emulate him as best as I can," Shattenkirk said. "Those were areas that he always shined in." Alexander Steen also had a goal for the Blues before leaving late in the second period with a lower-body injury. David Backes had two assists, and Jaroslav Halak made 34 saves in beating Lundqvist in a matchup of Olympic goalies. New Yorks Rick Nash scored his sixth goal in four games -- netting at least one in each -- but Shattenkirk took advantage of Nashs slashing penalty, scoring 9 seconds into the power play. Lundqvist made 23 saves in his return from a one-game absence caused by the flu. He allowed fewer than three goals for the seventh straight game, but still couldnt find a way to stop the Blues -- the only NHL team he has never beaten (0-4). "I was moving the way I wanted to," Lundqvist said. "I am happy with the way I played, but its still very disappointing to not come out of here with at least one point." St. Louis, which killed all three Rangers power plays, swept the two-game season series and has won seven of the past eight meetings. The Blues, beaten 7-1 at New Jersey on Tuesday, have earned points in eight straight visits to Madison Square Garden. This was their first since Nov. 7, 2010. "Its shameful that we havent been here more often," Backes said. "You see the crowd, youre in the city for a day or two, you feel that hype, and you know what playing the New York Rangers brings. I think it brought the best out of us." The Rangers got even late in the second on Nashs team-leading 17th goal. Derek Stepan sent a pass from behind the net to Nash, who stepped into a slap shot from the dot in the left circle and ripped a drive past Halak with 1:43 left. New York pressured the Blues for the remainder of the period and drew its second power play in the closing seconds. "We had a couple good looks," Rangers captain Ryan Callahan said, "a couple Grade-A chances there right in front. We just didnt get one past them there." The Rangers outshot the Blues 28-18 through 40 minutes. "Theyre a team that if we wouldve taken off the gas for 60 seconds, it couldve been 3-2 the other way in a heartbeat," Backes said. Steen gave the Blues a 1-0 lead with his 26th goal. A pass from Jaden Schwartz hit Steens right skate in front of the crease, caromed off Lundqvists stick and skate and trickled in at 8:38. The goal was briefly reviewed by video replay, and it was determined that the puck wasnt kicked into the net. It was the fifth straight goal allowed by the Rangers since they had a 3-1 lead over the Islanders in the second period on Tuesday in a 5-3 loss. A late power-play goal was the winner in that one, too. Steen struggled to get to the bench after going hard into the boards in the second, but he was back soon after on the power play. He skated off for good with 2:57 left in the period. Blues coach Ken Hitchcock said Steen is day to day. NOTES: Nash has 21 goals and 40 points in 50 games versus the Blues. ... PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Canadian John Axford is out as the Cleveland Indians closer. Indians manager Terry Francona announced the move before Saturday nights game against Tampa Bay. He met with the Simcoe, Ont. native prior to batting practice. Axford is 1-3 with nine saves and a 4.91 ERA in 17 games in his first season with the Indians. He has really struggled in the last week, and was pulled in the ninth inning of Clevelands 6-3 win on Friday night. "We told him, for now, were going to kind of get you out of that role and try to get you in some situations where we can get him on a roll again," Francona said. "I told him numerous times, because I mean it, the goal is to get him back as our closer, and I think he understands that. I dont want him to do it in like two days because I dont want some Band-Aid. I want him when he gets it, to take it and stay there," he said. A group of four relievers that includes Cody Allen, Scott Atchison, Marc Rzepczynski and Bryan Shaw could all get opportunities to fill the role. "The one thing I assured them is that when we get to the ninth, whoevers pitching, were not going to have four guys warming up bbecause we think youre good," Francona said.dddddddddddd Axford was signed to a one-year, $4.5 million contract as a free agent in December after pitching for Milwaukee and St. Louis last season. The one-time Brewers closer had 105 saves from 2010-12, and converted 49 straight save chances during a stretch. The Brewers traded an ineffective Axford to St. Louis in late August. Axford became a reliable reliever for the Cardinals down the stretch and pitched for them in the World Series. The Indians hoped the 31-year-old righty would do well replacing former All-Star closer Chris Perez, now with the Los Angeles Dodgers. But Axfords rough patch started last Sunday, when he gave up a three-run homer to Dayan Viciedo in the ninth inning of a 4-3 loss to the Chicago White Sox. The next day, Eduardo Escobar homered in the 10th off Axford and lifted Minnesota to a 1-0 win. Axfords latest tough outing came Friday night. He entered in the ninth with a 6-2 lead, but gave up David DeJesus RBI double with two outs and then walked Ben Zobrist to load the bases. Allen replaced Axford and got a fly ball from James Loney on a 3-2 pitch for his first save. Combining the endurance of cross-country skiing with the marksmanship of shooting, biathlon is arguably one of the toughest sports at the Winter Olympics. Yet for Canadian Jean-Philippe Le Guellec, all the elements an athlete needs to win in biathlon may come together for him today in the mens 10-kilometre sprint, being held at the Laura Biathlon & Ski Complex in Krasnaya Polyana. Originally born in Kingston, Ont., Le Guellec — hes nicknamed Tiji — became the first Canadian male to win a World Cup biathlon event when he won the 10K sprint in Ostersund, Sweden, in December 2012. This will also be Le Guellecs final Olympic competition. While Le Guellecs facing big challenges in his quest to land on the podium in Sochi, the three-time Olympian is looking like a real contender in an especially strong field. "I think podium is definitely possible. Everything has to fall into place, for sure. You have to have a good ski, you have to have a good shooting," says Le Guellec. "You dont need to be the fastest skier out there, you dont need to be the fastest shooter. But its an alchemy of both of them."Canadas also got two other competitors in the 10K: Nathan Smith of Calgary, Alta., and Brendan Green of Hay River, N.W.T. The 28-year-old Smith is competing in his first Olympics in Sochi, and hes feeling good about competing this time around after missing out on qualifying for Vancouver 2010. "This is my first time here. Its really quite a spectacle. All the money and work that went into it is impressive. Seeing it in person is amazing.dddddddddddd"Despite the optimism, today wont be easy for the Canadians. Theyre competing against the most decorated biathlete of all time — Norways Ole Einar Bjørndalen. Now attending his sixth Winter Olympics, the 40-year-old Bjørndalen is gunning for his seventh Olympic gold medal today. Norways got more than just Bjørndalen to contend for gold today, though: Emil Hegle Svendsen, a biathlon sprint specialist, is looking to take his third Olympic gold after winning two golds in Vancouver 2010. Svendsens closest rival is Frances Martin Fourcade, who also comes into the 10 kilometre as a medal favourite. overall World Cup title, Fourcade — he also has an older brother, Simon, thats competing in the same race — won the silver medal in the 15 kilometre mass start in Vancouver 2010 and is looking to upgrade to gold in Sochi. Theres still more competition for the top contenders, such as the home crowds favourite, Anton Shipulin of Russia. Yet the biggest competition for the athletes might be the Laura Biathlon & Ski Complex itself. Le Guellec describes the biathlon course as very tough. "The Russians have been boasting for quite a while now that its the toughest course out there. Toughest course in the world. And you know what? Theyre absolutely right," says Le Guellec. "They have vicious climbs and really technical downhills, which I absolutely love."Smith agrees that its a really challenging course. "This is my first time here and everyone told me it had a lot of hills - and it does. Its really impressive." Pellegrini had admitted the visitors would need nine wins from their remaining 10 games for a chance at Premier League glory but Alex Neils relegation-threatened side went closest at Carrow Road as Patrick Bamford hit the crossbar in the first half.Manchester City - who have not won back-to-back league games since October - are now nine points behind leaders Leicester, who host Newcastle on Monday Night Football, but Pellegrini vowed to fight on until the numbers no longer add up. These are tough days for the Toronto Argonauts and not just because the team has a 3-7 record and is coming off a disappointing 13-12 result in the annual Labour Day Classic. The Good Ship Argonaut is afloat in a sea of uncertainty and its affecting every part of the operation, from the players in the locker room to those in the front office, while raising concerns around the CFL about the leagues future in the countrys biggest market. As many are now aware, team owner David Braley was in conversation this past winter and spring with Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment president and CEO Tim Leiweke about selling the Argonauts and moving them to a re-fitted BMO Field on the shore of Lake Ontario. Those talks broke down late in the off-season and theres much speculation as to why. Its believed by many in and around the league that Braley may have overplayed his hand by driving too hard a bargain for the team, although he says the negotiations never got to that stage, instead getting hung up on the internal politics of MLSE and the need to secure funding from various levels of government before a deal could get done. Subsequent talks about Braley entering a lease for the Argos to play at a re-fitted BMO Field broke down over which party would control specific revenue streams. The result of all that has left the team in a state of limbo, with several departures on the business side of the operation – some voluntary, some not -- while the players have had to manage a nomadic week-to-week existence until recently moving into a new practice facility. But the biggest issue hovering around the Argonauts is the stadium. With the team due to vacate the Rogers Centre after the 2017 season and no time to reasonably finance and construct a new stadium of any quality since, the Argos are on the clock. There are no talks ongoing between the Argos and MLSE at the present time, although Braley said he hopes they will resume in 30 to 60 days. But with Leiweke having already announced his intention to leave his post next spring and CFL commissioner Mark Cohon having done the same, the dynamics will be different this time. Will that help or hurt the Argos chances of getting into BMO Field? Is there someone at MLSE willing to champion the cause of buying the team now that Leiweke may no longer have the authority to engineer such a transaction? Thats impossible to say, but there may be no more critical question facing the franchise as it looks to gain a foothold on the future and create some badly needed momentum in the marketplace. So what can Braley say to calm the fears of CFL fans in Southern Ontario who are concerned not just about the current state of the Argos off the field, but also its future in Toronto? "I would say youve got to have a little bit of faith that people will end up doing the right things," said Braley. "The commissioner, board of governors chair Jim Lawson and I are all extremely involved in trying to resolve the problem." The Argos are trying rebuild their front office business staff, but thats challenging because everyones aware the team is for sale. And in the most optimistic scenario, the team would be under new ownership this off-season. So what you have is a team whose business operations are constrained by uncertainty, with no guarantees of a future home and an owner whose leverage would appear to be minimal. No one has suggested the Argos under Braley havent continued to invest in the football product, but the fact is there are bigger storm clouds on the horizon than simply the teams performance this season. There may be several parties involved in trying to resolve the stadium issue since the league has a large stake in the future of the Toronto market. But the bottom line rests with Braley. And while hes tremendously respected for what hes done for the CFL over nearly the past two decades, his legacy may become tarnished if he cant steer the Argos into a new home. That may be unfair, since no one else was willing to step up and pay the Argos bills four years ago. But by taking on the responsibility of owning the team – and cashing the cheques that came with the 100th Grey Cup in 2012 – the job of securing a future facility became his. The Toronto Argonauts need a story to tell - a narrative that begins with where they are today and where they plan to get to. Its not like Braleys Argos havent had their share of breaks on which they could build a more solid footing. Under Braley, the Argos have uncovered a true league star in Chad Owens, were on the right end of one of the most lopsided trades in league history when they acquired quarterback Ricky Ray, hosted a Grey Cup game in the midst of an NHL lockout and won that Grey Cup as well. And yet, none of that has translated into a stonger presence in the marketplace or a better position from which to bargain for a new home. Maybe Braley has the answers to all the questions surrounding this franchise. Maybe the man whose made himself fabulously wealthy as a shrewd negotiator is just lying low, waiting for the terms to come his way so that the Argos can be reborn in a new home with a bright new vision for the future. But until thats all clear, theres going to be loads of concern about the future of the Argonauts in a city where they need some positive momentum - and fast. "I love this one," Blank said, looking down at the red, black and gold scarf draped over his dark suit. "I havent taken it off since it was given to me. I may not sleep in it tonight, but I may. I havent decided yet." Major League Soccer announced its latest team Wednesday, an expansion team for Atlanta that will begin play in 2017 at the citys new retractable roof stadium. The team will be owned by Blank, who also controls the NFLs Atlanta Falcons. He said it was the culmination of a process that started about a decade ago, when he first started talks with MLS about bringing a team to the city. The off-and-on discussions picked up again after Blank reached a deal with the city last year to build a new $1 billion downtown stadium next to the soon-to-be-demolished Georgia Dome. He is putting up most of the money, with the city kicking in $200 million from a hotel tax. "I think Atlanta is a natural fit for Major League Soccer," said Blank, who was serenaded by a burgeoning fan group that calls itself "Terminus Legion," a reference to the citys former name. The teams name has not been determined. Blank said he will get input from the fans before deciding on the new moniker, though he already knows the colours: red and black -- matching the Falcons -- with a substantial amount of gold as well. "What the name will be, we really dont know," he said. "We will spend a lot of time listening to our fans and trying to understand why some names are more important than others, why certain designs are more important than others, why certain logos are more important than others." One name that wont be considered: Atlanta Chiefs, the name of two previous teams that played in the old North American Soccer League. While the Chiefs won the first NASL championship in 1968, both versions struggled financially and eventually folded. MLS Commissioner Don Garber said there was no hesitation about putting a team in Atlanta once Blank worked out a stadium deal. It is the ninth-largest metropolitan area in the U.S. and the biggest without a top-level soccer team. The city has a large Hispanic population and last month drew more than 68,000 fans to the Georgia Dome for a friendly between Mexico and Nigeria. "This is something that will help elevate our league," Garber said. "It will also elevate our sport in thhe entire Southeast, which is something that is very important to us strategically.dddddddddddd" The league went all out to tout its newest team. Hundreds of fans turned out for a street festival before Blank and Garber arrived by helicopter for the introductory news conference, touching down on the roof of a downtown hotel overlooked Centennial Olympic Park. Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed also attended. While the new stadium is primarily designed for the Falcons, Blank stressed that it will be soccer-friendly. The stands along the sideline will have the capability to retract, accommodating the larger soccer pitch while maintaining sightlines. Curtains will descend from the roof automatically to close off the upper sections, creating the sort of intimate atmosphere that works better for less-attended MLS games. The new facility is designed to seat about 71,000 for NFL games, Blank said, but can be reduced to about 29,000 for soccer using only the lower bowl. "There will never be an MLS game in Atlanta where NFL lines are shown on the field," Blank said, drawing a big cheer. MLS, which has 19 teams this season, is expanding rapidly with a goal of having 24 teams by the end of the decade. Orlando and New York City are scheduled to begin play next season, and the league has awarded a provisional team in Miami to a group led by David Beckham, contingent on a soccer-specific stadium being built. The league has added five teams in the past five years, including the hugely successful Seattle Sounders. Garber said there is no worry about growing too fast given the abundance of soccer talent around the world. "When we expand, we can pick from players around the world," Garber said. "We could change the roster rules, the international player limits, and have no dilution in talent." Blank said he will try to encourage some crossover between Falcons season-ticket holders and those interested in attending MLS games. But he acknowledged the teams are likely to have very different fan bases, making it clear the new soccer team will not merely be a side business for the Falcons. His first priority is to hire a team president for the MLS venture. He will also be exploring possible locations for a state-of-the-art training facility. "We dont want any stepchildren in our family," Blank said. "We want to make sure the people running soccer get up in the morning thinking about soccer and go to bed thinking about soccer." ANAHEIM, Calif. - Chicago and Anaheim had the NHLs two best records and a combined 15 Olympians on the ice at Honda Center. Before all that world-class talent heads to Sochi this weekend, the Blackhawks demonstrated why theyre still the team to beat when the NHL gets back to work in three short weeks. Corey Crawford made 29 saves in his first shutout of the season and Chicago pulled within one point of Anaheim for the overall NHL lead with a 2-0 victory over the Ducks on Wednesday night. Marian Hossa scored in the second period and captain Jonathan Toews added a late goal for the defending Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks, who improved to 3-0-2 on their six-game trip before the Olympic break. Chicago followed up its victory in Los Angeles two days ago with another solid effort against the Ducks, suggesting the defending champs are hitting their stride right before Sochi. "The last handful of games on this trip, weve got back to the way we need to play," Toews said. "Thats a tough team to do that to, and we have to feel good about what we were able to accomplish." After keeping the Ducks off the scoreboard in a fast, well-played game, the Blackhawks also won the Western Conference powers season series, taking two of three from Anaheim. Chicago (35-10-14, 84 points) is right behind Anaheim (40-14-5, 85 points) with one game left before the break. "(Crawford) made some key saves, and we had some breaks and some fortunate bounces," Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said. "(Anaheim) had that run there, 19 of 20 (wins), but I think this trip really put us in a spot where were back in the mix. We played the right way, and were getting some good points." Quenneville also announced Patrick Kane wont be with the Blackhawks when they wrap up their trip in Phoenix. The American Olympians grandfather, Donald, died two days ago, and Kane is going back home to Buffalo before heading to Sochi. Jonas Hiller stopped 23 shots for the Ducks, who have lost four of five. Anaheim also has lost three straight home games after starting the season 20-0-2 at Honda Center. "We will overcome this," Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau said. "I thought we put in a great effort. We just didnt score goals. Were not going to cry about it. Were just going to get back to work and put another big run together." Chicago mostly beat the Ducks with defence, a minor surprise in a meeting between two of the NHLs highest-scoring teams. Crawford turned away every chance generated by the Ducks, who hadnt been shut out in their first 56 games this season before getting blanked twice in their last three games by Dallas and Chicago. Anaheim improved its effort from recent games, yet struggled mightily to get clean scoring chances. The Ducks had a 15-3 shots edge early on, but couldnt score during 40 seconds of 5-on-3 play in the scoreless first period. "We were doing a lot of things right, but unfortunately we cant buy a goal right now," Ducks defenceman Cam Fowler said. "All we can do is continue to push, continue to work on it." Both rosters are dotted with Olympic talent, including five key members of the Canadian team headed to Sochi. In addition, two members of the Swedish team — Chicagos Johnny Oduya and Anaheims Jakob Silfverberg — were scratched. Just 39 seconds into the second period, Hossa sneaked into Anaheims defence and beat Hiller for his 24th goal. The Slovak Olympian also had two goals in Chicagos win over the Ducks last month. The Blackhawks matched the Ducks effort after the midway point of the game. Anaheims Daniel Winnik had an outstanding short-handed chance in the slot in the third period, but couldnt settle a bouncing puck in time. Toews wrapped it up with 2:31 to play with a slippery move off the wall. After Hossa grabbed a turnover by Fowler, Toews went toward the middle and put a shot past Hillers left arm for his 19th goal. NOTES: Oduya missed his first game of the season with a lower-body injury. Quenneville said the injury shouldnt prevent Oduya from playing in Sochi. ... Hossa has scored in five consecutive games. ... Ducks C Nick Bonino missed his third straight game with an apparent wrist injury. Before the game, Anaheim recalled F Emerson Etem for his first game with the Ducks since Dec. 9. Teddy Bridgewater Jets Jersey . MINSK, Belarus - Canadas Ben Scrivens will start against Denmark and may have an opportunity to claim the No. 1 goaltender job at the world hockey championship. The Edmonton Oilers netminder allowed one goal on 24 shots in beating Slovakia on Saturday in the first international game of his career. James Reimer of the Toronto Maple Leafs stopped 57 of the 62 shots he faced in his two games: a shootout loss to France and a victory over the Czech Republic. Coach Dave Tippett said he didnt know if those goaltenders split the next two games, given that Canada plays back-to-back against Denmark and then Italy on Friday. "They each got two, well revisit tomorrow night," Tippett said after Wednesdays practice at Chizhovka-Arena. Justin Peters of the Carolina Hurricanes is the third goaltender on the roster. Tippett hasnt revealed if the veteran would get a start in Minsk. Despite two days off since holding on to beat the Czechs on Monday, Tippett was insistent his team get two practices in before getting back into game action. He was satisfied with what got accomplished as far as teaching and learning. "We got some good work in, just a little bit of tactical stuff, a little bit of special-teams stuff," Tippett said. "Its a good couple days, and now we jump into back-to-back games." After three games, Canada is in second place in Group A with seven points. Sweden, which is undefeated but needed a shootout to beat the Czech Republic, is in first with eight points. On paper, Denmark and Italy arent the biggest challenges for Canada, but an opening loss to France showed players nothing is guaranteed at this tournament. Tippett said those teams like to keep it tight and are hard to play against. But with a roster of all NHL players, the next couple results likely hinge more on how Canada plays. Its Tippetts hope that his team is better than it was in the third period against the Czech Republic, when it almost let a three-goal lead slip away. "We got to do a much better job with the puck and holding the puck," he said. "We had so many turnovers, even in the offensive zone. We didnt give ourselves a chance to play in the offensive zone. I thought, actually, our defending was decent — we just defended too much." With that in mind, Vancouver Canucks defenceman Jason Garrison pointed to offensive-zone play as an area of focus the past two days. What made Canadas Sochi Olympic team so good defensively was being on the attack so often, and its a recipe this group would like to replicate. "I think its just learning how to play that style (on the big ice)," Garrison said. "Theres a couple different things that were being taught out here, and its helping out. Its helping the forwards kind of gain possession and keep possession in the offensive zone and then it leads to scoring chances instead of just one (shot) and out." The Canadians were outshot 34-20 by the Czech Republic and could thank Reimer for keeping them in the game early and saving them late. Two power-play goals thanks to a five-minute major on Czech forward Jan Kovar for slashing Canadian captain Kevin Bieksa helped, but after also giving up another goal on the penalty kill, special teams is an area of emphasis, as well. "We scored a couple power-play goals, but we obviously couldve capitalized a lot more," Nashville Predators defenceman Ryan Ellis said. "I think that and the PK are going to be big parts of our game moving forward, and our penalty kill I think weve let a goal in every game, so I think thats something were going to have to kind of shore up here and really bear down. Obviously staying out of the box is a big part of that, but when we do get down, just killing them off." Canada has a tournament-worst 60 per cent success rate on the penalty kill and is just 3 for 16 on the power play. Players also worked on the shootout at the end of Wednesdays practice. Kyle Turris, Sean Monahan and Matt Read — the three best percentage shooters on the team based on this past regular season — went 0-for-3 against Frances Cristobal Huet last week. NOTES — Denmark features four NHL players in defenceman Philip Larsen of the Oilers, forwards Jannik Hansen and Nicklas Jensen of the Canucks and winger Mikkel Boedker of the Phoenix Coyotes. I thought that would be a perfect way to score a goal, but unfortunately it didnt happen tonight, Donovan said, a reference to the winning hit by Yankees captain Derek Jeter in his final home game. After the 1-1 draw ended, he hugged each of his teammates in the centre of field, then took a slow lap around the field, using the sleeves of his sweat top to dab the tears from his eyes. In front of the benches, he hugged what appeared to be family members, and then he climbed in front of the stands behind a goal to lead the American Outlaws supporters in a chant of I Believe That We Will Win!Donovan did contribute to Mix Diskeruds fifth-minute goal. Donovan crossed the ball from the left, and Altidore failed to connect. DeAndre Yedlin, the 21-year-old defender who is among the top American players of the next generation, played thee ball in front of the goal, where Diskerud scored from 12 yards.ddddddddddddEcuador secured the draw when Enner Valencia scored in the 88th minute with a shot from outside the penalty area that curled around defender Tim Ream and bounced in, with goalkeeper Brad Guzan about 3 yards away.Donovan, who is retiring after Major League Soccers season, was serenaded during the exhibition by fans chanting Thank You Landon! and they gave him a minute-long standing ovation when he was replaced by Joe Corona. Donovan was congratulated by teammates before he left the field, handed the captains armband to Altidore and then exchanged a brief handshake and hug with Jurgen Klinsmann, the coach who controversially cut him from the roster in May and denied Donovan what would have been a fourth World Cup trip. While Donovan and Klinsmann have had a strained relationship since the May 22 decision to leave the 32-year-old Los Angeles Galaxy forward off the World Cup roster, U.S. Soccer Federation President Sunil Gulati persuaded Donovan to put aside his anger and return for the testimonial. Donovans 157th international appearance left him second among American men, behind only Cobi Jones 164.Before the kickoff, Gulati presented Donovan with a collage of 19 U.S. jerseys from his career, framed with redwood, the state tree of Donovans native California. The jerseys were mounted on an oak, the Connecticut state tree, and the names of Donovans U.S. teammates were etched in the oak. On February 9, 2014, Michael Sam publicly declared he was a homosexual. The Missouri Tigers Defensive End and SEC Defensive player of the year is eligible for the upcoming NFL draft in May. The watershed announcement gives rise to a bit of a legal minefield and the league and teams will look to ensure that no lines are crossed. Lets break it down. Does the NFL have any rules any place protecting homosexuals from discrimination? They do have protection for homosexual players, although it wont apply unless Sam gets drafted. Article 49 of the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement provides that you cant discriminate against a player on the basis of "race, religion, national origin" or "sexual orientation". The reference to "sexual orientation" is brand new in the CBA, and the other 3 major sports also have a similar provision. Heres the catch: the CBA wont apply to Sam if hes not drafted. While the CBA provides that it covers all "present and future" players, it still restricts that player pool to drafted rookies or undrafted players who are negotiating with a team. If undrafted, Sam wouldnt qualify as either type of player. So that means if Sam goes undrafted, the NFL CBA wont apply to him. Is that it? Is there nothing else protecting a player like Sam? There is, but its not perfect. Theres no federal law prohibiting discrimination based upon sexual orientation. The existence of such a law would be ideal for Sam since it wouldnt matter where he would end playing since a federal law covers the entire country. There are laws at the state level, although not every state has them. In all, 21 states have laws on the books that prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation in the context of private employers. So that shakes out to 27 of the 32 NFL teams being the subject of gay employment protection laws. So which teams are in states where there arent state or other local laws protecting gay people? The five teams are as follows: Carolina Panthers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Houston Texans, Arizona Cardinals and Tennessee Titans. Heres the big question: if Michael Sam is not drafted, can he sue and win? Indeed, that is the big question. Sam is projected to be a mid to late round pick. In order to be successful in a lawsuit against the league he will need to show that he was not drafted because he is a homosexual. That can be tough in the context of a draft – even if it is true. We have seen the draft stock of players inexplicably drop in all the sports. We routinely see players drafted a lot later (or earlier) than projected. Apart from the top prospects, drafts can be highly unpredictable. Indeed, drafts are complicated beasts and it can be hard to show that a player wasnt drafted simply because he is gay. To have a shot at winning a lawsuit, Sam would need strong evidence supporting his case. He would be looking for things like incriminating statements or emails that provide that a team conspired not to draft Sam because of his sexuality. That may not be easy to find. Teams may pass on Sam because he is gay, but just never say it. Ultimately, Sam would need a smoking gun, and absent that he would have a tough time winning a lawsuit. Do you think teams will take a pass on Sam because hes gay? Reason would suggest that some teams may shy away from Sam because he is gay. From a philosophical standpoint, some executives may not be comfortable with the idea of a gay player. Other teams may not have an issue with his sexuality, but may still take a pass because they fear he will become a distraction. Indeed, we have already heard anonymous executives express this sentiment. While some may believe he could become a distraction, and by extension adversely affect his team, it seems unlikely to be the case. The NFL is filled with real and legitimate distractions: DUIs, domestic violence, vehicular manslaughter, murder and whatever Dez Bryant did last Sunday. None of these events have led to the downfall of a team or the demise of the league. And most certainly something as innocuous and irrelevant as a players sexuality wont become a problem. He has a 53-37 record with a 3.63 ERA in seven major league seasons, including five with Atlanta.TORONTO – Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Dave Nonis was not consumed this past summer with the stinging string of moments that led to his teams demise on that fateful night in Boston last May. “I spent a lot more time thinking about the fact we proved to ourselves we can compete with that team,” Nonis said at the outset of training camp on Wednesday morning. “Youre not forgetting what happened, but I havent spent, literally five minutes thinking about it. Its dwelling on a negative that I think we shouldnt dwell on. We should dwell on the opposite: that were not where we need to be, but were a lot closer than we were 24 months ago.” Gone is the cloud of a nine-year playoff absence and all the lingering disappointment and failures it brought with it. In this fall comes a Leafs team that will aim for another rung on the ladder, a belief that the success attained in lockout 2013 was just one incremental step toward a far greater goal. “Our expectations have gone up,” Leafs coach Randy Carlyle bellowed shortly after Nonis. “Everything cant stay the same …We have to push for a higher level, if its compete, if its efficiency, if its skill, desire, all those words that you want to use, were going to have to push for more. This group has got to be prepared to give us more than they gave us last year and weve got to do it over an 82-game schedule.” That will mean another step forward from the recently inked Nazem Kadri, the still unsigned Cody Franson, and James van Riemsdyk, who thrived with a veteran know-how in the postseason. More will be asked of Jake Gardiner, who struggled last year post-concussion and yet went on to wreak havoc when he entered the lineup against the Bruins. More will be demanded from James Reimer as he attempts to fight off Jonathan Bernier for the number one gig in goal. More might even be expected of Phil Kessel, the now 26-year-old rising to new heights opposite his former team following another regular season amongst the NHLs scoring leaders. “We want to make sure that we build off the things that we created last year,” said Carlyle. Preferring to focus on the long-awaited march into the postseason and near knockout of the Bruins – and not the untimely Game 7 unraveling – Nonis hopes that his team gleaned a belief that it could compete with the very best the league has to offer, that the assembled collection was capable of chasing down a team of Bostons caliber and very nearly toppling such a giant. “It allowed them to believe in themselves,” Nonis stated of last years group, which included 14 players appearing in their first postseason game. “Until you actually go out there and do it I dont think you can honestly say that we did believe, but they learned to [believe].” “We feel we can compete with those teams,” he continued. “Bostons a pretty good hockey team. They went right to the very end [losing in the Stanley Cup final]. We can learn some lessons from them too. We want to become a team ultimately that can compete for a championship. Were not there yet. There are lessons to be learned. We hopefully learned some right there and theres a lot more along the way that were going to have to pick up and figure out if we want to become one of those teams.” While Nonis says that he was not consumed from the perils of Game 7, including the fall from a 4-1 third period lead, he does concede to thoughts of what mightve been.dddddddddddd. Analyzing the series in its entirety, those thoughts continued to hover back to the series opener, a one-sided 4-1 beat-down, “the biggest lesson of all for our group”. “We really felt and our players felt that they were prepared for it,” said Nonis of the loss, which saw many Leafs dazed in the headlights of postseason hockey. “But watch that tape and we werent.” A different team emerged in Game 2, one that swiped a 4-2 victory from the Bruins in the hostile confines of TD Garden, a match that was highlighted by Carlyles creative approach to freeing Phil Kessel from Zdeno Chara, the former rising with an increasingly dominant performance against a former team. And from there the series tightened to the end points of Game 7. “Players that maybe dont back-check as hard on a regular basis began to do it,” Nonis recalled of the shift in tone versus the Bruins. “Collectively we pushed them to do things that they hadnt normally done and it allowed us to have a little bit of success.” For Carlyle, the lesson moving forward lies in accountability. “There are growing pains that take place in team sports and we experienced one of them,” he said of the momentous defeat. “But were responsible for that. Were not shying away from it. As a coaching staff, we have to take our fair share of responsibility for that also and weve done that. Were not putting our players out on an island and saying ‘You shouldve did this and you shouldve did that. Were putting ourselves in the same boat and saying ‘We shouldve done some things, we had a chance to do some things that we shouldve initiated, we shouldve been the stimulus. Thats all part of it. “Thats the way this group is going to take the step forward is we accept responsibility for our actions, try to learn from them as much as possible and attack the next one straight on.” “…when youre in a position where there is no turning back, you learn a lot about people,” Nonis added. “You learn a lot about what theyre going to do and how theyre going to compete and if theyre people you want to keep around.” Gone are Mikhail Grabovski, Clarke MacArthur, Matt Frattin, Ben Scrivens and Ryan OByrne, replaced by an infusion of postseason fortitude in the form of Dave Bolland and David Clarkson, the former capturing the Cup with the Blackhawks, ultimately topping those very same Bruins with the shocking winner in Game 7. Additionally added from the Kings is increased strength in goal with Bernier. “I think when you bring players in that have gone through that and have won, that have gone through the adversity to win a championship, they can pass on a lot to the players around them,” said Nonis, stressing Bollands run with Chicago this past spring and once previously in 2010. The Leafs hope that the added know-how of Bolland and Clarkson, Berniers predicted ascension, and continued growth from a stock of young talent will initiate another step forward in the building process. But they know theyll need even more. “In our opinion, weve taken some significant steps forward,” concluded Nonis. “We still believe as a group that we have a lot to learn and a lot to do. And its only to get harder, its not going to get easier for us.” White NFL Jerseys Cheap Youth NFL Jerseys China Wholesale Jerseys 2020 Stitched NFL Jerseys Cheap NFL Autographed Jerseys Cheap NFL Jerseys Discount Jerseys ' ' '
