So what did we learn?1. Shane Ray is as good as goneBefore the game word broke that Su’a Cravens and Shane Ray were healthy scratches for Dymonte Thomas and Jeff Holland. Thomas had a quiet game outside of one play Youth Darian Stewart Jersey , but he made it count. As for Holland, he saved Mayfield from getting into the second level on a 3rd and 1 in the second half. He also had a few good rushes. Anyone who watched him in the preseason knew he just needed a chance, but sitting Ray for him said more about the 2015 first rounder than the undrafted rookie.Holland’s motor was evident on this rush in the 2nd. Great second effort to get to Mayfield. After Elway turned down the Ray’s fifth year option last spring, the writing was on the wall: the former Missouri Tiger had a put up or shut up season in front of him and limited opportunities to prove himself. He’s failed completely. Ray has been the primary rotation player on the Edge depth chart since Shaq Barrett was injured and still has all of 4.5 pressures on the entire season according to Sports Info Solutions. If his season is over, he’ll finish 2018 with 1 sack, 10 tackles and 1 QB hit. It will be interesting to see if what teams watch his 2016 tape and take a flier, unfortunately he never returned to that burgeoning star rusher that notched 8 sacks behind DeMarcus Ware and Von Miller. Cravens is easily the more peculiar inactive, while Ray is a free agent after the season, Denver inherited Cravens rookie deal when they traded for him from Washington. Initially I thought perhaps it had to do with the conditional 2020 6th round pick Elway gave Washington as part of the trade, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. In the end, it may well be due to performance as Cravens was one of the many Fly Zone members who struggled mightily to contain the Niners George Kittle last week. What makes the move even more bizarre is that Cravens was benched while Darian Stewart continue to play. 2. Sutton had a big first half, but disappeared in 2ndThe biggest play Sutton made tonight won’t be reflected in his traditional stats as he set up the first half touchdown when he drew a defensive pass interference penalty on Terrance Mitchell that gave the Denver O 1st and Goal from the 3. Two plays later Keenum found pay dirt. Sutton finished the 2nd quarter with 5 catches on 5 targets for 42 yards and the 25 yard penalty. It became his final statline as the Browns put the clamps down in the second half and DaeSean Hamilton was forced to try and carry the load. 3. The Broncos ground game is still stuck in neutralA week after averaging 2.8 yards per carry against San Francisco, the Broncos vaunted rushing attack averaged 1.6 tonight. Phillip Lindsay and Royce Freeman had moments, but could never provide the offense some degree of consistent production. Inevitably, the absence of Emmanuel Sanders and Denver’s rebuilt interior line has finally caught up to the team. Opposing defenses are using stunts to confuse the offensive line and coordinators in recent weeks are electing to sell out against the run, daring Keenum and what’s left of the Broncos pass catchers to beat them. 4. Tramaine Brock flew solo & Von made historyThe play after Taylor was ejected Von Miller made Broncos notched his 98th career sack, passing Simon Fletcher for the most in team history. The new all time sack record holder. Unfortunately, the Fly Zone was down to Justin Simmons and Tramaine Brock on drive that put the Browns ahead for good.5. Keenum did all he could to play hero Early on things looked great. At one point I thought that this was the best half of football I’ve seen from Keenum, all things considered. He was throwing to the 4th and 5th string tight ends and completing passes to 3 rookies and a receiver who couldn’t make the Ravens a year ago. Keenum and the offense were methodical in the first half. Then in a 3 play sequence Tim Patrick and Matt LaCosse dropped passes before the left side of the offensive line collapsed and Keenum threw a prayer into the end zone. It was picked off by Jabril Peppers. All things considered, it was an understandable decision as Sutton had a chance. There was a big hiccup in the 2nd half when Keenum threw one of his uglier picks. But as veteran quarterbacks need to do, he responded with a money drive to get Denver into the red zone with less than 7 minutes to go.Hamilton stretched to get the first on this clutch play. After the Hamilton catch on 3rd down though, Musgrave went conservative with 3 straight runs. Joseph called for a field goal with 4:35 left on the clock to get the Broncos within 1 point. Following Hmailton’s big catch on third down the Broncos took the ball out of Keenum’s hands. After the one of the gutsiest performances I’ve seen from the Broncos, Keenum got the ball back with 1:49 left on the clock and the field to drive. The first 4th down he found Devontae Booker who made a play after the catch to get the Broncos to the 50. Unfortunately, the Mile High Magic was all used up. 4th and Game, the Browns went man across and sent the house. This isn’t Minnesota.Broncos’ No. 1 offense big winner in first joint practice Day 13 of Broncos’ training camp featured the first of two joint practices with the Chicago Bears, and by the most important measures, it was a success - no brawls and no serious injuries.“It was a lot better than I expected it to be, honestly,” said guard Ron Leary. “It’s the first joint practice I’ve been a part of and there wasn’t a brawl. That’s a good thing. I think there are just pros out here that are just trying to work and get better.”And on a few other measures, it was also a great day for the more than 4,000 fans on hand for the final public practice of training camp.Mostly because Emmanuel Sanders put on a show.First-team offense ‘sharp’ against Bears’ best DDuring one-on-one drills, the Case Keenum-Emmanuel Sanders connection had Bears’ cornerback Kyle Fuller befuddled all day long. But Keenum wasn’t content with just Sanders. He threw - and completed - to a host of receivers, including Demaryius Thomas, De’Angelo Henderson, Jeff Heuerman White Case Keenum Jersey , Phillip Lindsay and Tim Patrick.Ryan Koenigsburg of BSN Denver described the first two plays of the 11-on-11 period for the Broncos’ No. 1 offense:“I will take away a lot,” Keenum said of his day on the field. “I think we communicated well. There’s still some things pre-snap I want to hammer down. I need to get better with that offensive line. Some different miscommunications and things like that. It’s on my plate, it’s on me. Then we’ll watch the film—I need to go watch the film—and see what we can get better at.”Vance Joseph was also happy with his first-string offense, calling his quarterback “sharp” - a nice rebound from the weekend’s dismal showing by the unit. For his part, Keenum definitely seemed to take Saturday’s lackluster performance to heart - making sure the first-team offense did not pick up where it left off against the Vikings.“I think for me, the best part of adversity, the best part of not playing well is being able to get back out there and bounce back,” he said. “That’s what so tough about going those two series, is that we never had a chance to bounce back on Saturday. Getting out on the practice field, Monday, Tuesday, today versus these guys, I think it showed that we can bounce back, and I’m proud of the way we responded.”The offensive line even drew some praise.“I think they’re in a great spot. I think they’re playing well together as five. ...The offensive line I thought did a great job against some of those pressures that Minnesota does. And I think that we’re doing so much good stuff that, even the miscommunications that we have, we’re able to go talk about it. It’s pressures that we’re going to know like the back of our hand and in season we’re going to be able to see it, recognize it, and block it up. I think they’re doing a great job.”As for the second team offense, Chad Kelly’s performance was “up and down,” according to Joseph.“It wasn’t perfect, but he made some plays,” Joseph said. “They’re like Chad always does. He made some nice scramble plays. It wasn’t perfect, but I was OK with his performance.”Defense ‘sharp’ ... unless pass went to a tight endIn general, the first-team defense was also highly effective - except when Mitch Trubisky threw to his tight ends, a.k.a the Achilles heel of the Broncos’ D.According to Zac Stevens of BSN Denver, once Trubisky found his first tight end in the 7-on-7 period (after not throwing a single pass in the first team period), he didn’t let up.The Bears’ second-year quarterback threw a quick pass in the middle to a tight end where Todd Davis had the coverage. From there it was just academic.Six of Trubisky’s next seven completions were also to tight ends, including a touchdown pass to Trey Burton who could not have been more wide open on his way to six points. In goal line 7-on-7 periods, Trubisky targeted tight ends four out of six times, completing all four and hauling in two touchdowns in the process. But the pressure on the quarterback was real, thanks to Von Miller - proving that even when he’s not going full-out, he’s still dangerous.Miller denied doing any holding back when he’s on the field.“No, I’m definitely trying to wreck it,” Miller said. “I think as a human being, we all struggle with consistency http://www.authenticsdenverbroncos.com/cheap-jeff-heuerman-jersey , and I’m the same as everybody else. ...I don’t come out here to practice with an agenda, I just try to practice hard and play. Sometimes it works in my favor and sometimes it doesn’t.”Other than the tight end coverage, Miller was also happy with how the defense stepped up.“We have to clean up our two-minute defense a little bit. We could use some improvement there. We talked about that as a defense afterwards. That’s the thing about this defense. We’re not going to let things just get swept under the rug. When there is an issue we’re going to address it, fix it and then come out and do that.”Hopefully that is also the attitude among the second string defense - which did NOT have a good day against Chicago’s second-team offense.Joseph noted that a big reason for the “terrible” performance was having “only six corners” and only “five safeties” - a few of whom just were added to the team this week.“We’re just beat up. We’re down to five safeties - guys who have played in our system. We’re beat up,” Joseph said. “That being said, we’ve got a game on Saturday and those guys have got to do their jobs.”Horse Tracks - docllv’s pick of the dayHow Su'a Cravens Fell Apart in Washington | SI.comTwo years ago he was a promising rookie with a chance to become a cornerstone player in Washington.
