The Edmonton Oilers took a bold approach to free agency, giving money and term to a couple of fancy stats darlings. Colin Kaepernick Jersey . Numbers Game breaks down the signings of Benoit Pouliot and Mark Fayne.. The Oilers Get: LW Benoit Pouliot, D Mark Fayne and D Keith Aulie. Pouliot, 27, has been a hockey nomad, bouncing from team to team in recent seasons, but hes been pretty good at each stop along the way. While playing for four different teams (Montreal, Boston, Tampa Bay, N.Y. Rangers) in the past four seasons, Pouliot has put up strong possession numbers in each stop and hes been a pretty effective goal-scorer in limited time. He had a career-high 36 points in 80 games for the Rangers last season. The issue that crept up with Pouliot, and was particularly notable during the Rangers Stanley Cup run, was his alarming tendency to take offensive zone penalties and that lack of discipline can be frustrating but, in the grand scheme, Pouliot has been drawing more penalties than he takes. He has good size and plays enough of a physical game to get under the skin of the opposition from time to time and Pouliots willingness to go to the net could give him a shot at a 20-goal season if he ends up playing a bigger role in Edmonton. Where Pouliot fits with the Oilers is a bit of a question. He looks like a third-line left winger -- thats the role that hes handled effectively -- and the Rangers do have enough talent on the right side that they could have some decent offensive production out of their third line. While Pouliot is lauded by those who appreciate advanced stats, most would do a double-take before signing any third-line winger to a five-year contract. Maybe five years and $20-million was the cost of doing business, but that does seem like a serious commitment, particularly if there isnt room for Pouliot among the Oilers top six forwards. The Rangers have some holes to fill up front, and knew that they would not be able to get him re-signed at market prices, especially when the Oilers were willing to spend at this level. Fayne is a 27-year-old defenceman who has good size (6-foot-3, 215 pounds) and plays a sound defensive game, something that is sorely needed in Edmonton. There were two defencemen in the league who played tough opposition, started more shifts in the defensive zone yet finished with a better shot differential per 60 minutes than Fayne. One was Zdeno Chara and the other was Faynes frequent partner, Andy Greene. The interesting part of that possession success is that, last season, Fayne was the weak link in that pairing -- Greene had much better possession stats (54.2 Corsi%) without Fayne than Fayne had (47.2% Corsi%) without Greene -- but that was a flip of the year before, when Fayne was at 57.2% without Greene and Greene was 54.4% without Fayne. Ultimately, Fayne has been a reliable defensive defenceman who should upgrade the Oilers and, signed for $14.5-million over four seasons, hes not unreasonably priced if he can handle top-four minutes in Edmonton. The Devils have some young defencemen on the way up, including Jon Merrill, Eric Gelinas and Adam Larsson, that can take over some of the minutes that Fayne had been playing. 25-year-old Keith Aulie is a 6-foot-6 defenceman who has played 136 career NHL games, but has been crushed in possession terms, over his four NHL seasons. Hard to imagine that hes anything more than a spare part, even for the Oilers. While Pouliot and Fayne arent marquee names, they have been quietly solid players for several seasons. While the Oilers went long on Pouliots term, they were aggressive to acquire a couple of players that ought to make them more competitive. Subban and Matt Duchene will be the two skaters sitting out the teams opening game. LJUBLJANA, Slovenia -- France, Lithuania and Serbia have each advanced to the quarterfinals of the European basketball championship, with France and Lithuania winning their games Friday and Serbia moving on despite a loss to Ukraine. France cruised past Latvia 102-91 and Lithuania beat Belgium 86-67. Frances victory also cleared the way for Serbia and Lithuania to advance. Pooh Jeter carried Ukraine to an 82-75 victory over Serbia and revived his teams hopes of also making the quarterfinals, depending on the results of the final day of second-round play Saturday. The American-born point guard scored 20 points and made several key baskets with the game on the line as Ukraine bounced back from a 34-point loss to Latvia. "The team effort was what won the game for us," said Jeter, the brother of American sprinter Carmelita Jeter. "Latvia really punched us and caught us off-balance. But going against a powerhouse like Serbia we knew that we could win it. Everybody else doubted us. Everybody else counted us out. But we as a team believed that we could get this win." Maxym Korniyenko added 21 points and eight rebounds for Ukraine. Serbia improved to 3-1, while Ukraine moved to 2-2. The Serbs will next play France and Ukraine meets Lithuania in their final second-round games. Latvia takes on Belgium and needs to win to have a chance of advancing. France is also 3-1 and Latvia is 2-2. Alexis Ajinca scored 25 points for France, which led by as many as 22 before slowing down in the final quarter, allowing Latvia to pull within nine. But San Antonio Spurs star Tony Parker finished with 23 points to help France slow the rally, while Nicolas Batum of the Portland Trail Blazers added 19 points and 10 rebounds. "We controlled the game but they never gave up," Ajinca said. Dairis Bertans led all sccorers with 28 points for Latvia. Brian Hoyer Jersey. "We trailed by 20 at halftime and against a team such as France its hard to come back from such a margin," Latvia guard Janis Blums said. "But we are still alive." Jeter hit a 3-pointer at the end of the third quarter to give Ukraine a nine-point lead, which increased to 11 at the start of the fourth. With Serbia trying to close the gap, Jeter sank back-to-back 3s, added a jumper and then a steal before making one of two free throws. The flurry put Ukraine up by eight with 1:05 remaining. "We knew that if we wanted to win we had to play our best game at both ends of the court," Ukraine coach Mike Fratello said. "Today we had the energy and the effort and we came back from the embarrassment against Latvia." Toronto Raptors centre Jonas Valanciunas scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Lithuania, which appears likely to clinch one of the top four places in its group. "We used our big guys real well and that was the key," said Lithuania power forward Mindaugas Kuzminskas, who added 12 points and eight rebounds. Jonathan Tabu led Belgium with 15 points. "We missed some open shots at the beginning but we knew the scoring would come," Lithuania coach Jonas Kazlauskas said. Serbia struggled with 11 turnovers -- Ukraine scored 15 points off the giveaways -- and shot 50 per cent (12-of-24) from the free throw line. "We were fortunate. Things happen on the court, like they drop the ball at half court, that you cant explain," Fratello said. Bjelica, who led Serbia with 22 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, acknowledged that his team had underestimated Ukraine after its big loss to Latvia. "Jeter gave us a lot of problems, he hit a lot of easy baskets," Bjelica said.
