NEW YORK -- John Saunders, the versatile sportscaster who has hosted ESPNs The Sports Reporters for the last 15 years, has died, the network announced Wednesday. He was 61.Saunders joined ESPN in 1986. The Canadian did play-by-play, led NHL Stanley Cup and World Series coverage on ESPN and ABC, and hosted studio shows for baseball, college football and college basketball.A cause of death was not announced. This tragic news brings us unspeakable sorrow. John was the patriarch of our family, and we cant believe he is gone, Saunders family said in a statement. We are sincerely touched by the outpouring of support and sadness, which is a reflection of the character and integrity that defined him. While we dont yet have all the specifics, John wasnt feeling well physically in recent days and sadly, he was unresponsive earlier this morning. We appreciate all of the thoughts and prayers for our cherished father, husband, brother and uncle.Saunders took over as host of The Sports Reporters, a Sunday morning staple of ESPN programming, after Dick Schaap died in 2001. Saunders played the role of calm traffic cop on the panel show that features three sports journalists volleying opinions on the top sports news of the day.John was an extraordinary talent and his friendly, informative style has been a warm welcome to sports fans for decades. His wide range of accomplishments across numerous sports and championship events is among the most impressive this industry has ever seen, ESPN President John Skipper said in a statement.Saunders was also a founding member of the board of directors for The V Foundation for Cancer Research, a charity started by the network after former college basketball coach and ESPN announcer Jim Valvano died of cancer in 1993.He was as close to Jimmy V as anybody at ESPN, said Dick Vitale, who has worked at ESPN for decades with Saunders and considered him one of his closest friends.Vitale said Saunders was a diabetic, but he was not ailing, and the death of one of his closest friends was unexpected. Saunders has been the master of ceremonies at Vitales gala and V Foundation fundraiser in Sarasota, Florida, in 10 of 11 years the event has been held, said the longtime college basketball analyst. When Vitale had to have throat surgery that threatened his career in 2008, Saunders surprised him at the hospital and was there with Vitale before and after the procedure. The doctor told me that there was a good chance it was going to be cancer, Vitale told the AP in a phone interview. I said, `John, do me a favor. When you come in that room after just give me thumbs up if its not ... and if it is dont do anything. And when I woke, the first guy I saw after surgery was John and I saw thumbs up and we hugged.Vitale added: He was like family. Im so shocked. The news of Saunders death was reported on ESPNs morning edition of SportsCenter from the Olympics in Brazil by anchor Hannah Storm, who struggled to compose herself enough to get through the announcement.Johns passion for his family, his nation, his favorite sport & the V foundation will stay with me forever, NBCs Mike Tirico, a longtime ESPN colleague of Saunders, tweeted. As will his kindness and support.Saunders death came less than two years after the network lost another popular broadcaster, Stuart Scott, at the age of 49 in January 2015 after a bout with cancer.Saunders was born in the Toronto area and grew up near Montreal. He was very proud to be Canadian, said Leo Rautins, the former NBA player who teamed with Saunders on Toronto Raptors telecasts. Hed mention it every time he could.Saunders played hockey at Western Michigan from 1974-76, teaming with former New York Rangers president and general manager Neil Smith. One of saddest days of my life today as I grieve suddenly losing my best friend of 42 years, John Saunders. Life will never be the same, Smith tweeted.Saunders younger brother, Bernie, played 10 NHL games for the Quebec Nordiques from 1979 to 1981.Saunders started as news director at CKNS Radio in Espanola, Ontario, in 1978. He worked as sports anchor at CKNY-TV in North Bay, Ontario, from 1978 to 1979, and at ATV News in New Brunswick in 1979-80 before he became sports anchor for CITY-TV in Toronto from 1980 to 1982.Saunders worked as a sports anchor at WMAR-TV in Baltimore from 1982 to 1986 before joining ESPN. While at ESPN, he doubled as a play-by-play man for the Raptors.I think youd have a hard time finding anyone to say anything bad about John, Rautins said. He was very giving, very caring, very intelligent.Saunders lived in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, with wife Wanda. They had two daughters, Aleah and Jenna. He was one of the most significant and influential members of the ESPN family, as a colleague and mentor, and he will be sorely missed, Skipper said. Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this extremely difficult time. Joakim Nordstrom Jersey .C. -- Rodney Hood connected from all over the court while freshman Jabari Parker was busy swatting shots and scoring in transition. Julien Gauthier Jersey .B. -- The Baie-Comeau Drakkar took over sole possession of first place atop the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League on Thursday with their sixth straight win. http://www.hurricanesauthority.com/ . -- Five former Kansas City Chiefs players who were on the team between 1987 and 1993 filed a lawsuit Tuesday claiming the team hid and even lied about the risks of head injuries during that time period when there was no collective bargaining agreement in place in the NFL. Carolina Hurricanes Gear . From filmmaker Nanette Burstein (On the Ropes), The Price of Gold revisits the saga that rocked the figure skating world ahead of the 1994 Lillehammer Olympic Winter Games: the assault on Nancy Kerrigan, and the plot that led its way back to her rival Tonya Harding. Lee Stempniak Jersey . -- An ugly goal by Nick Bonino helped the Anaheim Ducks overcome the defensive-minded Phoenix Coyotes on a night when their ragged power play continued to struggle. Aroldis Chapman may finally have some competition for the title of baseballs hardest-throwing pitcher.Of course, the Cuban left-hander raised the bar even higher over the past week.Chapman reached 105.1 mph on July 18, matching the fastest pitch since Major League Baseball started tracking speeds in 2008. Chapman -- whose stint with the New York Yankees ended Monday when he was traded to the Chicago Cubs -- threw 13 pitches of at least 104 mph from last Monday through Saturday. Nobody in baseball had reached that mark all season until then.Chapmans fastball has been in a class by itself -- to the point that MLB.com has a Chapman Filter on its Statcast leaderboard in case fans want to view the list of fastest pitches without him included. For the rest of this season, however, he might have some company. Mauricio Cabrera, a 22-year-old right-hander who made his major league debut for the Atlanta Braves in late June, reached 103.8 mph on July 18 against Cincinnati. The 6-foot-3, 245-pound Cabrera is 1-0 with a 2.19 ERA in 12 appearances, although all that power has led to only seven strikeouts in 12 1/3 innings. Through Sunday, Cabreras four-seam fastball averaged 100.7 mph, which was actually ahead of Chapmans average four-seamer of 100.5.MLB rolled out its Statcast system last year, and fans can look up leaderboards for pitch speeds and other interesting categories. The longest home run of the season belongs to Nomar Mazara of Texas (491 feet on May 25), and the highest exit velocity was 123.9 mph off the bat of Giancarlo Stanton on June 9.That figure didnt come on one of Stantons prodigious homers, by the way. It came on a double-play grounder.Seattles Nelson Cruz has the highest average exit velocity at 95.8 mph, and Philadelphia catcher Cameron Rupp is seecond at 95.dddddddddddd1. Rupps slugging percentage has jumped from .374 in 2015 to .487 this year. Here are a few other developments from around baseball:BUY OR SELL?The Aug. 1 deadline for trades without waivers is now a week away, and several teams are occupying that shaky middle ground where its hard to say how aggressive theyll be. Through Sunday, the Tigers, Yankees, Mariners, Royals and White Sox were all between four and 6 1/2 games of a wild card in the American League. In the NL, the situation seems a bit more clear cut, with almost every team either firmly in the hunt for a playoff spot or way behind. The only exception is probably Colorado, which is six games behind a wild card, but the Rockies have a ways to go before establishing themselves as contenders. Theyve gone 7-3 since the All-Star break against a schedule that included seven games against Atlanta and three against Tampa Bay.FANTASY FOCUSThe trade deadline often leads to significant upheaval among closer jobs as relievers get dealt. With Chapman traded, for example, look for save opportunities to start falling Andrew Millers way again in New York. (Thats assuming Miller isnt also dealt.)LINE OF THE WEEKHanley Ramirez homered three times for Boston in an 11-7 victory over San Francisco on Wednesday night. He actually had three home runs by the sixth inning but grounded out to the pitcher in the eighth.Ramirez has 13 homers on the season after going deep Saturday and Sunday. Hes also played in 90 of Bostons 96 games -- a significant fact since Ramirez hasnt played more than 128 games in a season since 2012.---Follow Noah Trister at www.Twitter.com/noahtrister Wholesale Nike NFL Jerseys China NFL Hoodies Cheap NFL Jerseys Camo Wholesale Jerseys 2019 NFL Jerseys Cheap Cheap NFL Jerseys Authentic NFL Jerseys From China Discount NFL Jerseys Wholesale Jerseys From China Cheap NFL T-shirts Wholesale NFL Gear NFL Jerseys China NFL Jerseys Cheap Cheap Jerseys 2020 Cheap NFL Jerseys NFL Jerseys Cheap Cheap NFL Autographed Jerseys Cheap NFL Jerseys China Cheap NFL Jerseys Authentic Cheap Jerseys ' ' '
