PHILADELPHIA -- The Pittsburgh Pirates activated pitcher Gerrit Cole from the disabled list in advance of his scheduled start against the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday night at Citizens Bank Park. Cole had been on the DL since Aug. 25 with right posterior elbow inflammation.Cole, 26, went 19-8 with a 2.60 ERA last season to make the All-Star team and finish fourth in National League Cy Young Award balloting. This year, Cole has been bothered by triceps and elbow injuries and gone a disappointing 7-9 with a 3.55 ERA in 20 starts. He recently received clearance to resume pitching after a visit to Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles.The Pirates also announced that infielder Josh Harrison will miss the rest of the rest of the regular season with a right groin strain. Harrison suffered the injury while legging out a double in an 8-7 loss to Cincinnati on Saturday.The estimated recovery time is four to six weeks, so Harrison would return to play this season only if Pittsburgh rallies to earn a playoff spot. At 69-72, the Pirates are six games out of a wild-card berth with 21 games left to play.Harrison finishes the regular season with a .283 batting average, four home runs, 59 RBIs and 19 stolen bases in 131 games.
