Mickelson was in the stream that runs in front of the 18th green after attempting to reach the par 5 in two from 288 yards with a 3-wood. "I needed to make a birdie to have a chance at playing tomorrow," Mickelson said. "Fortunately, barely went in, and it looked like the water overlapped the grass. It was not that hard of a shot." Bowditch holed out from 83 yards for an eagle on the par-4 12th. The 30-year-old topped the leaderboard at the end of a round for the first time in his PGA Tour career. "My wedge shots have been pretty good," Bowditch said. "I was trying to hit (the one on No. 12) a little past the pin and hope it came back to a reasonable distance. Got lucky." He closed the round with a double bogey on the par-4 ninth, taking two chips to get out of the heavy rough. Chad Collins and rookie Andrew Loupe were a stroke back. Collins shot 66, and Loupe had a 70. Calgarys Stephen Ames shot a 71 and is tied for 34th place. Mike Weir of Brights Grove, Ont., is well back in a tie for 69th. Mickelson has struggled this year and entered the Texas Open for the first time in 22 years to put his game under competitive conditions as a preparation for the Masters. He knew he had a chance to make the cut even after a bogey on No. 15 dropped him to 3 over. "I was on the green for five minutes and (the 3-over score) went from 74th to 71st in five minutes," Mickelson said, "so I figured that 3 over had a pretty good chance of making it because the scores were coming back." On the 18th, Mickelson pulled off his left shoe and rolled up that pants leg and gave it a shot with his foot in the water. "Its important that I get more mentally into the round like I did today," Mickelson said. "Yesterday, I was very sloppy. I like the way Im driving the ball. My speed is back. My back feels great. My body feels great, and Im able to hit the ball hard again." Plus, after having 17 putts on his second nine Thursday, he opened his second round Friday with one-putts on eight of his first nine holes. The contracts prevent the two stars from becoming unrestricted free agents this summer and keep them under contract with the Sharks through the 2016-17 season. "Patrick and Joe continue to perform at an elite level in the National Hockey League and, most importantly, they make the other players around them better," general manager Doug Wilson said. "They both made it very clear that they wanted to stay in San Jose and we were able to agree on contracts that fit with our team building philosophy." According to TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.com, Thorntons deal is worth $6.75 million per season, or just over $20 million over three years with a full no-movement clause, while Marleau will get $6.66 million per year, or just under $20 million over the same term. Thornton and Marleau were the top two picks in the 1997 draft with Thornton going to Boston and Marleau to San Jose. The Sharks acquired Thornton in a deal on Nov. 30, 2005, and the two have helped the Sharks win the most regular-season games in the NHL since that time. But despite all that success, San Jose is still searching for its first trip to the Stanley Cup finals. San Jose is poised for another run this season and is currently fifth in the league with 72 points. Even at 34 years old, Thornton and Marleau are still playing at an elite level. Thornton leads the NHL with 47 assists and is sixth with 53 points. Marleau was picked for the Canadian Olympic team and has 21 goals and 26 assists this season. Thornton has 1,171 career points, the most of any player since he entered the league in 1997-98. He is currently 25th on the NHLs all-time assist list with 834 and 48th on the career points list. Marleau has played all 1,216 career games with San Jose, notching 425 goals and 483 assists. He is fourth in the league in goals the past six seasons with 187 and is 72nd all-time. Wilson has always done a good job locking up his key players before they hit free agency at below market prices. Thornton is taking a slight pay cut from his expiring three-year deal that pays him an average of $7 million a year. Marleau also took a slight pay cut from the four-year deal that pays him an average of $6.9 million a year. With these deals done, the Sharks have locked up almost all of their important players before free agency starts in July. The one key remaining potential unrestricted free agent is 37-year-old defenceman Dan Boyle.
