JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Blaine Gabbert is getting the first crack at Jacksonvilles quarterback job, albeit without three offensive starters. Coach Gus Bradley announced Thursday that Gabbert will start against the Miami Dolphins on Friday night, but he plans to give Chad Henne some repetitions behind the first-team offensive line. "I think that hes really shown a lot of poise," Bradley said of Gabbert. "I think he handles situations that have been presented to him in practice. They both have done some really good things, both have made some really good progress. Now, are they there yet? No, and I hope they would both answer it the same way. We just felt like with Blaine, with what hes done the last couple days in practice and how hes responded, we decided to give him the nod." Bradley also said running back Maurice Jones-Drew, who is recovering from foot surgery, wont play in the teams preseason opener as a precaution. "We just feel like hes making good progress but still has to work on conditioning," Bradley said. "Hes going in the right direction, but we felt that was needed for his recovery and his continued progress. And we want to be smart with him and not force anything. But were pleased with where hes at right now and excited about it, and its good." Eight others, including four starters, will be held out because of injuries. The group includes starting defensive end Jeremy Mincey (concussion), rookie safety Johnathan Cyprien (hamstring) and receivers Justin Blackmon (groin) and Cecil Shorts III (calf). The others are backup running back Justin Forsett (toe), defensive tackle Brandon Deaderick (groin) and cornerbacks Jeremy Harris (back) and Lionel Smith (quadriceps). For the rebuilding Jaguars, the game gives Bradley a chance to see players in an even more competitive environment than practice -- something hes talked about throughout training camp. Miami, meanwhile, is expected to give its starters more work than they got in the Hall of Fame game against Dallas last week. The Dolphins starting offence played 10 snaps in against the Cowboys, and coach Joe Philbin said the first team likely will see a little more action against Jacksonville. That could include receiver Mike Wallaces first game with Miami since signing a $60 million, five-year contract. He missed the opener because of a groin injury. The home crowd likely will focus on the QBs. Although Bradley calls the situation an open competition, many believe its Gabberts job to lose. The Jaguars look at Gabberts first two seasons and find it difficult to fully evaluate what he can do and whether he can be a franchise quarterback. They point to his rookie season, when he was thrown into the starting lineup in Week 3, without much off-season work and asked to play with a lacklustre receiving corps and a lame-duck coaching staff. Gabbert was supposed to show improvement last year, but Jones-Drew went down early in the season and Gabberts offensive line was a patchwork unit that provided inconsistent protection. With MJD and the line getting healthy, and the receivers a year older, the Jaguars want to see what Gabbert can do in 2013. It really starts against the Dolphins, when Gabbert will play against live action for the first time since a forearm injury sideline late last season. "I always expect to start football games," Gabbert said. "But at the same time I know competition is always going to be the theme of this organization, so you never take things for granted. You have to go out there and prove yourself day in and day out." Henne handled the news well even though he would prefer to start against his former team. "Theres no disappointment," he said. This year, the New York Mets have acquired Jay Bruce from the Cincinnati Reds to bolster their offense.The trade had been held up Monday due to a medical issue with one of the players involved in an earlier version of the deal, Mets general manager Sandy Alderson confirmed.The Mets also reacquired Jonathon Niese from the Pittsburgh Pirates in a swap for fellow left-hander Antonio Bastardo at Mondays non-waiver trade deadline.Bruce, 29, had spent his entire nine-year career with the Reds. He leads the National League in RBIs this season with 80 to go along with 25 homers and a .265 batting average. He becomes the first player traded during the season while leading the league in RBIs since the stat became official in 1920, according to Elias Sports Bureau.Bruce, who will join the Mets on Tuesday, is a lifetime .249 hitter with 233 home runs and 718 RBIs. He will be slotted behind Cespedes in the Mets lineup, although Cespedes is dealing with a right quadriceps issue and was out of the lineup for a second straight day on Monday.Hes been a run producer, Alderson said of Bruce. Hes been in the middle of a lineup. From my standpoint, are we relying on him to produce runs? Yes, I think probably we are. But I think his presence in the middle of the lineup will change things. For starters, they rank last in the majors in batting average with runners in scoring position at .206.The Mets boast one of the best pitching staffs in baseball, led by Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom, but they are only 13th in the National League in runs scored with 381. Last season, they were in a similar position and acquired Cespedes, who sparked them to the World Series.The addition of Bruce does leave the Mets with a collection of players who are not ideally suited for center field. Collins hopes Cespedes can return to center field once his quadriceps improves. Otherwise, Michael Conforto and Curtis Granderson will need to be used there against right-handed pitching.Its not an absolute perfect fit for us, Alderson said. You start with the need for offense and work from there. Bruce homered in five straight games in late July, a career best. They also put together the framework of a three-team deal that wouldve sent Bruce to Toronto in the offseason, but that fell through. Bastardo signed a two-year, $12 million deal with the Mets in January but had struggled in relief this season. Niese is receiving $9 million this season and is likely to be bought out of team options for the following two seasons.Although Niese mostly served as a starting pitcher during his original stint with the Mets, Collins plans to use him out of the bullpen. He will provide a rotation safety net, though, in case Zack Wheeler has a setback in the final stages of his rehab from Tommy John surgery. Wheelers fastball sat at 90 to 93 mph during a simulated game on Monday. He is due to begin a rehab assignment on Saturday.
