Watt looked a little bit of a reach.While Watt was steady and occasionally spectacular as a rookie in 2017 for a team that led the NFL in sacks, Dupree has spent much of his first three years in the NFL searching for consistency to justify the first-round pick the Steelers used on him in 2015.So much for that narrative. Combining for four sacks in five quarters has a way of doing that.Dupree and Watt looked every bit as aggressive as coach Mike Tomlin envisioned during a season-opening tie in Cleveland. Working almost exclusively from the left side, Watt chased down Browns quarterback Tyrod Taylor three times. Dupree, now attacking from the blind side against right-handed quarterbacks such as Taylor, dropped him once."We did a lot of stuff to maximize our potential and opportunities outside and we still had more opportunities to make more sacks we didn't capitalize on," Dupree said. "It should have been more than that."Dupree estimated he and Watt could have had three or four more if not for Taylor's mobility.Regardless, it marked an auspicious start from a position the Steelers (0-0-1) placed a significant emphasis on heading into 2018 after opting to exercise the fifth-year option on Dupree's contract.Freed from the pressure of having to play for a new contract this fall, Dupree — who had 15陆 sacks during his first three seasons but had issues being a factor in the pass rush on a weekly basis — could instead focus on taking over at a spot that's been largely unsettled since James Harrison's prime earlier this decade.Harrison finally moved on after being cut last December and now it's Dupree's turn to use his combination of power and speed against opposing left tackles.The player who struggled at times against the run had his job responsibilities whittled down in some ways.Now Dupree's primary goal is to simply get after the quarterback while Watt can use his eyes — and his preternatural football IQ — to quickly dissect what's going on."I'm way more comfortable (on the left)," Watt said. "I feel like I can bend more. I'm a stronger player. I can see the quarterback. I can see his eyes. I know what he's thinking better. I'm a very instinctual player. It allows me to see and read the play better."It certainly looked that way as Watt chased Taylor through the muck Drew Bledsoe Jersey Salute to Service , hardly looking like someone who missed most of training camp due to hamstring issues.He played 85 of Pittsburgh's 89 defensive snaps and even managed to block Zane Gonzalez's potential game-winning 43-yard field goal with 13 seconds left in overtime."The switch revealed itself and its skillset," coach Mike Tomlin said. "We'll continue to work. We are going to ask those guys to be versatile and to move around. You nail those guys down as young people, so they can get muscle memory associated with skill development at their positions but as they get older we'll continually move them around. It provides flexibility for us."Maybe, but Pittsburgh might not want to drift too far away from what worked against the Browns, though Kansas City (1-0) and second-year quarterback Patrick Mahomes will provide a far different test on Sunday when the Chiefs visit Heinz Field.Where Taylor looks to make plays with his legs, the big-armed Mahomes would prefer to fling it."We just got to let him know we're there early," Watt said. "Make him stay in his pocket and make him use his arm strength."And make Mahomes use it before he's ready.The Chiefs lit up San Diego for 38 points last week, though Kansas City has long struggled to contain Pittsburgh's pass rush. We’ll have plenty to review over the coming days, but the preliminary report is straight-forward.No one on the Patriots offense was able to get open for the entire game. They weren’t able to get open against the Jacksonville Jaguars last week. They struggled to get open in the second half of the season opener against the Houston Texans. This includes Rob Gronkowski and every other player on the offense. Rex Burkhead suffered a neck injury and Sony Michel had to shoulder the load in his second game as a pro. Chris Hogan, Phillip Dorsett, and Cordarrelle Patterson are ghosts. This was not good.We all know the signs when Tom Brady is fed up with the game. When he’s not even trying anymore. He throws moon shots into double- and triple-coverage to his favorite receivers because he wants something to happen. Brady started to attempt these passes to Rob Gronkowski and Phillip Dorsett early in the fourth quarter. That’s when the game was over.On defense, the Patriots were atrocious, too. The Lions had a 100-yard rusher in rookie Kerryon Johnson- who did it in a mere 16 carries. Detroit hadn’t had a 100-yard rusher since Thanksgiving 2013. Dont’a Hightower looks like he’s stuck in molasses. The Lions were the third-consecutive team to target Keionta Davis when he was on the edge. The linebackers weren’t filling gaps and the defensive tackles weren’t holding the line.The Detroit also used the same crossing patterns and in-routes and targets to running backs in coverage by linebackers that both the Philadelphia Eagles and the Jaguars used. The Patriots didn’t have a response because the linebackers are too slow and the pass rush too nonexistent so the cornerbacks aren’t given enough time to react to the receiver changing direction.There are some fundamental issues with this team. This isn’t a one-game sort of issue. They haven’t looked good since the first half of the first game. There isn’t a player capable of winning one-on-one battles on offense, other than Rob Gronkowski Lawrence Guy Jersey , and that means teams can simply double Gronkowski and stop the entire offense, especially with the rushing attack not being productive. Maybe Josh Gordon will be able to help next week, and the return of Julian Edelman will definitely help.The defense fell apart when Trey Flowers suffered a concussion against the Jaguars, but is he honestly the difference between a top defense and one that can’t force a punt until the fourth quarter? How many defenders make that much of a difference? I’d argue “none” since there are weaknesses and question marks all over the board. Bill Belichick and Brian Flores need to inject some creativity into the defense because teams are extremely comfortable attacking and moving the ball down the field.The Patriots host the Miami Dolphins next week and this has become as close to a “must-win” game that ever exists in the first quarter of the regular season. The Dolphins are 3-0 and if they move to 4-0 and steal homefield from the Patriots in the head-to-head, then the Patriots will have an incredibly tough time taking back the division. New England hasn’t started a season 1-3 since 2001.Only three teams over the past decade have made the postseason after posting a cumulative -20 point differential over the first three games. The Patriots are in a tough position.Are there any bright spots from this game? Jonathan Jones looked good. So did Deatrich Wise, at times. But other than that, this was one of the worst displays by the Patriots in recent years.
