PHILADELPHIA -- Roberto Hernandez might want to have his next start switched, as well. Hernandez pitched four-hit ball over 7 1-3 innings, outdueling Gio Gonzalez and leading the Philadelphia Phillies past the Washington Nationals 1-0 Sunday. Chase Utley hit an RBI single in the first inning for the only run. Hernandez (2-1) struck out three and walked three. His start was moved up two days because Cole Hamels had the flu, and he retired 14 of 15 batters in the middle innings. "Not a big deal, whatever I had to do," Hernandez said. "I kept the ball down and tried not to overthrow. Im happy. It was a great game for my team and for me, too." Philadelphia manager Ryne Sandberg likes what Hernandez has added to the Phillies rotation as the fifth starter. "We like his stuff," Sandberg said. "Hes a ground ball pitcher. He has a durable arm. He likes the ball. Hes reliable and he can throw a lot of pitches in the game. "I like the way hes throwing. He solidifies our rotation and is a good complement. Hes funky out there, hes different and I like what hes doing right now." Mike Adams and Antonio Bastardo each got an out in the eighth. Jonathan Papelbon pitched the ninth for his ninth save in 10 chances. Gonzalez (3-2) allowed four hits in 7 1-3 innings. He struck out seven and walked two. "It was just a good pitchers duel," Gonzalez said. "I just tried to keep us in the game as long as possible." Philadelphia scored when Jimmy Rollins hit a one-out triple and Utley followed with a single. "That set the tone for our game," Sandberg said. Ben Revere tripled with one out in the Philadelphia third, and Gonzalez didnt give up another hit until Jayson Nixs leadoff single in the eighth. "Gio pitched well and their guy did too," Nationals manager Matt Williams said. "It was a good, old-fashioned pitching duel." Gonzalez got some help from his defence during that stretch, as Nate McLouth robbed Rollins of a hit with a diving catch in left field to open the sixth. The slumping McLouth didnt have success with the bat, though, going 0 for 3. He has just four hits in his last 44 at-bats, and has been filling in for the injured Bryce Harper. Denard Span opened the eighth with a single off Hernandez and the Philadelphia starter departed after Kevin Frandsens sacrifice bunt. Adams, who gave up the lead and took the loss in Friday nights series-opening loss to the Nationals, got Jayson Werth to ground out. Bastardo then relieved and walked Adam LaRoche before striking out Anthony Rendon. "Weve had some really key hits over the course of the season," Williams said. "It just wasnt our day." Said Gonzalez, "Were still good and the guys are working hard. Im not worried about this team." The Phillies unsuccessfully challenged a safe call by first-base umpire Fieldin Culbreth in the second. Culbreth ruled that Ian Desmond beat Rollins throw from shortstop to first baseman Ryan Howard. The delay lasted 2 minutes, 42 seconds. NOTES: A former Phillies minor leaguer, Gonzalez dropped to 4-2 in seven career starts against Philadelphia at Citizens Bank Park. Gonzalez has a 2.00 ERA in the hitter-friendly ballpark. ... Howard went 0 for 3 with two strikeouts against Gonzalez, dropping him to 0 for 11 with six strikeouts lifetime against the Washington lefty. ... The Phillies host the Blue Jays for a short, two-game series beginning on Monday night when Toronto LHP J.A. Happ (0-0, 4.15) is scheduled to face Philadelphia RHP Kyle Kendrick (0-2, 3.52). Hamels is set to start Tuesday. ... The Nationals begin a three-game home series against the Dodgers on Monday night when RHP Jordan Zimmerman (2-1, 3.27) is scheduled to face Los Angeles RHP Zach Greinke (5-0, 2.04). Moments later, Lucas set up another goal from the right when fellow countryman Alex turned in his corner with a strikers finish. The NBA play-offs begin on Saturday night, so we examine the eight Eastern Conference teams that have reached the post-season, identify their key players and analyse their title hopes. Cleveland CavaliersRegular season record: 57-25, Central division championsEastern Conference play-off seeding: 1 Star man: LeBron JamesLost amid the hysteria surrounding Steph Curry, LeBron James delivered another MVP-level regular season performance, leading the Cavaliers the No 1 seed in the East with 25.3 points, 6.8 assists and 7.4 rebounds per game.Off the court, things didnt appear to go as smoothly as rumours persisted about James frustration with younger team-mates Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love. He also mysteriously unfollowed his own team on Twitter mid-season causing a predictable media furore. Now in his 13th NBA season, James is known for pacing himself through the regular season and saving his best for the play-offs. He scored 33 and 34 points in his last two regular season appearances, signalling he is ready for the post-season. Cleveland will want their star names in sync if they are to challenge for the title Season in summary: No shortage of turmoil. The injured Irving missed the first two months of the season. Shortly after his return, coach David Blatt was fired and James failure to gel with Blatt was questioned.Blatts replacement Tyronn Lue enjoyed a better rapport with the players and the Cavs ultimately closed in and claimed the No 1 seed. Despite that, the team still have their issues. They havent found a way to get the best out of Love and James continues to chafe at the shoot-first mentality of point guard Irving.Play-off prognosis: Favourites to win the East and reach the finals. Should they get there, theyd face the Warriors or Spurs as definite underdogs.Toronto RaptorsRegular season record: 56-26, Atlantic division championsEastern Conference play-off seeding: 2Star man: Kyle LowryThe point guard was named an All-Star for a second successive season and delivered a stellar 21.2 points and 6.4 assists per game for the season, leading the Raptors to the best regular season record in their history.Lowry makes a difference on the offensive and defensive ends of the floor and his two-way play has come to represent the Raptors team identity. Kyle Lowry and the Toronto Raptors will have the support of a nation Season in summary: Following their first-round play-off exit in 2015, the Raptors were perceived to be lagging behind the Cavs, Miami Heat and Washington Wizards going into the season. However, their All-Star backcourt of Lowry and DeMar DeRozan - not to mention the defensive boost provided by free agency acquisition DeMarre Carroll and unheralded big men Bismack Biyombo and Patrick Patterson - established the Raps as a genuine force in the Eastern Conference early in the season, a position they never relinquished.Play-off prognosis: When the Raptors are in the post-season, take nothing for granted. Canadas only NBA team lost first-round play-offs series in 2014 and 2015. They have the ability to embark on a long play-off run (and the fanbase to make such a run truly memorable), but the jitters could set in if they fall behind early on in a series.Miami HeatRegular season record: 48-34, South East division championsEastern Conference play-off seeding: 3 Can Dwyane Wade lead Miamis band of veterans and youngsters through the post season? Star man: Dwyane WadeWith Chris Bosh a long-term absentee due to blood clots in his calf, veteran shooting guard Wade, a three-time NBA champion, once again finds the Heats play-off hopes on his shoulders.Wades regular season workload is limited to ensure he gets to the play-offs in the best shape so his pedestrian regular season numbers (19 points and 4.6 assists per game) are not important. When play-off defences tighten and a team needs a player able to create his own shot and take over a game, there are few with more experience and skill than Wade.Season in summary: The loss of Bosh in February provided opportunities for the teams less-heralded players. The Heat roster is a potent mix of veterans with extensive post-season experience and young stars poised to break through on the biggest stage and star alongside Wade.In Goran Dragic, they have a point guard able to control and game while mid-season acquisition Joe Johnson has a reputation for taking and making last-second shots.Maverick shot-blocker Hassan Whiteside and rookie defensive stopper Justise Winslow have the potential to make vital post-season contributions.Play-off prognosis: The true dark horse in the East. Should they beat Charlotte in the first round, Miami have the ability and personnel to spring a surprise later on against Toronto or Cleveland.Atlanta HawksRegular season record: 48-34Eastern Conference play-off seeding: 4Star men: Al Horford and Paul MillsapThe Hawks big men might lack star power but undeniably impact the game, particularly on the defensive end where the team boasts the leagues second-best rating.Millsap in particular saved his best form for the latter part of the season, averaging 19 points and 13.4 rebounds per game in April. Paul Millsaps Atlanta Hawwks will be looking to cause an upset Season in summary: After a slow start to the season, the Hawks found their best form after the All-Star break, winning 17 of their final 23 games.ddddddddddddThe Hawks are not solely reliant on their defence, they play effective, unselfish offence (only the Warriors average more assists per game) and in Kyle Korver and Kent Bazemore have players who can sink the three-ball.Play-off prognosis: The Hawks first-round series with Boston promises to be a low-scoring, tight affair but Atlanta have the play-off experience. This will be their ninth successive year in the play-offs. Progress beyond the second round - where they would likely meet LeBron and the Cavs - is another story.Boston CelticsRegular season record: 48-34Eastern Conference play-off seeding: 5Star man: Isaiah ThomasThe offensively-challenged Celtics rely on Thomas ability to score heavily and quickly. The 5ft 9in guard averaged 22.2 points and two three-pointers per game in the regular season. Hes also the Celtics best distributor, averaging 6.2 assists per game. The Celtics offensive efficiency dropped from 106.4 to 98.7 when Thomas was on the bench. He was deservedly named among the Eastern Conference All-Stars. Isaiah Thomas, the Boston Celtics pocket rocket, will lead their play-off challenge Season in summary: The Celtics may lack star power but thats not been a problem thanks to their head coach Brad Stevens, whose reputation continues to grow. The Celtics rely on the swift rotations and hustle of Stevens defensive system and in Avery Bradley, Marcus Smart and Jae Crowder, have the players to implement it.The Celtics got a major confidence boost ahead of the play-offs, ending the Golden State Warriors 54-game unbeaten home streak on April 1.Play-off prognosis: The Celtics series with Atlanta is the Easts most evenly-matched pairing. For all the progress they have made under Stevens, it will be tough for Boston to overcome the more experienced Hawks.Charlotte HornetsRegular season record: 48-34Eastern Conference play-off seeding: 6 Charlotte Hornets Kemba Walker has made huge strides, but can his team cause a play-off stir? Star man: Kemba WalkerPoint guard Walker provides the fuel that makes the Hornets engine run. With season stats of 20.9 points, 2.2 three-pointers and 5.2 assists per game, Walker is a leading candidate for the NBAs Most Improved Player award.Season in summary: When the season began, few would have backed Charlotte to reach the play-offs, particularly given the long-term absence of Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. But the Hornets hit their stride after the All-Star break, winning 21 of their 29 games, a record bettered only by Golden State and San Antonio.Led by Walker and supported by Nicolas Batum and Marvin Williams, the Hornets also improved significantly on the defensive end, finishing the season with the leagues ninth-best rating.Play-off prognosis: For all their improvement this year, the Hornets concede too much post-season experience to Miami, their first-round opponents. Wade, Whiteside and Co. will be too much for them.Indiana PacersRegular season record: 45-37Eastern Conference play-off seeding: 7 Paul George has bounced back from injury to lead the Indiana Pacers play-off bid Star man: Paul GeorgeGeorge suffered a horrific leg-break on duty for the US national team and it cost him most of the 2015 season. The Pacers missed the play-offs as a consequence. George, though, has enjoyed a remarkable return to his best form in 2016, re-asserting himself among the NBAs Top 20 players with season averages of 23.1 points, 2.6 threes, 7.0 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game.Season in summary: The Pacers style of play changed significantly over the course of the season. They started brightly embracing a small ball, three-pointer reliant offence with George and CJ Miles. When Miles hot-shooting cooled off, rookie forward Myles Turner provided the offensive spark inside until he too slumped. The one constant for the Pacers was their inability to close out games. They lost 20 regular season games in which they held a fourth-quarter lead.Play-off prognosis: The seedings suggest the Pacers are underdogs against the Raptors, but George has taken Indiana to two Eastern Conference finals in recent years while opponents Toronto have lost first round series to lower seeded teams in each of the past two seasons. If the Pacers can get an early series lead, will the Raptors panic?Detroit PistonsRegular season record: 44-38Eastern Conference play-off seeding: 8Star man: Andre DrummondThe Pistons centre led the NBA in rebounding (14.8 per game) on his way to his first All-Star selection. Although his offensive game is limited and his free-throw shooting is historically atrocious, Drummond is the perfect centre-piece for coach Stan van Gundys offence.Season in summary: The Pistons started slowly but, following the acquisition of small forward Tobias Harris from the Orlando Magic, made a late post-season push winning 17 of their last 26 games to seal the eighth seed.Play-off prognosis: The first round will prove to be too much, too soon for the Pistons, who will surely be out-manned by LeBron James and the Cavaliers. After all, there had been weeks of speculation that the star centre wasnt enamoured with the idea of playing in a Canadian market. But a few hours after the trade, Spezza wanted to make it clear that he wasnt leaving Ottawa because he couldnt stand the pressure and scrutiny that came with playing in the nations capital. “I dont think thats accurate," Spezza told TSN.ca. "My biggest motivator for a trade was to win. It will be portrayed however they want it to be portrayed, but the last thing I was worried about was coming out and doing interviews in front of my stall.” During the past month, it was widely reported that Spezza put the other Canadian teams on his no-trade list and that his desire was to go south of the border, where he would face less scrutiny. However, Spezza said the fact that most Canadian teams are struggling right now was the biggest reason why he put them on his no-trade list. He is never one to shy away from microphones and says he would welcome playing in a Canadian market again down the road if the opportunity arose. “It was more circumstance than anything of why those (Canadian) teams were on my list. I have one year left on my deal and I wanted to go someplace where I could win a Cup,” Spezza said. The troubling trend for Senators fans, however, is that Spezza is the latest superstar to have a somewhat messy departure from their city. In the summer of 2009, Dany Heatley demanded a trade and ultimately forced the clubs hand into trading him to San Jose. Last summer, Daniel Alfredsson and the organization had a sudden and bitter divorce, prompting the long-time captain to sign with Detroit as a free agent. Now that Spezza has been shipped to Dallas, it only adds to the growing perception that superstars have a short shelf life in Ottawa. But Spezza says the fans in Ottawa arent to blame for a number of players wanting to leave in a short window of time. “Its a fine market for stars, but just like any hockey market, its tough when youre not winning. All three situations are unique. I didnt make my decision because of Alfie and Alfie didnt make his decision because of Heater,” Spezza explained. “We all had our own reasons. There were some similarities, but in the end, each was a unique case.” In some ways, this does appear to be different than the Alfredsson saga from last summer, when the captain abruptly ended his tenure with the club. Spezza appeared to have a more calculated, long-term approach – far less emotional than the course Alfredsson seemed to take. But there is a striking similarity between Alfredssons comments last summer and the ones made by Spezza today.dddddddddddd In each case, the captain felt like he had a better chance to win a Stanley Cup with a different organization. “All I can say is my goal is to win a Cup. I think Ottawa has a good chance. They have a good core of young players and a good nucleus. But for me right now, I just felt like Dallas was a great fit,” Spezza added. Spezza said he had discussions with Bryan Murray towards the end of the season and alerted the front office that he likely wasnt going to re-sign a contract extension beyond 2015. And rather than make it awkward for everyone during the 2014-15 season – constantly answering questions about his future – he felt it was best for all parties involved to make a preemptive move this summer. “I didnt have any interest in signing an extension and that kind of hinted to them that maybe it was time to move on. I met with Bryan and had some really good and frank discussions. And I was being honest with them when I said it was best for me and best for them if I moved on,” Spezza explained. Spezza was asked if he knew the regular season finale in Pittsburgh on April 13 would be his last game in a Senators jersey. He scored a brilliant goal in the shootout to secure a Senators 3-2 victory and he admitted, “It wasnt lost on me that it could have been my last goal with Ottawa.” Spezza said he stayed quiet for the past few weeks out of respect for the process, but once Murray told reporters at the NHL GM meetings last month that Spezza had indeed requested a trade, he knew the writing was on the wall. “Once Bryan went public, I knew it was probably done for me there,” he said. (Spezza also went out of his way to point out that he still has a terrific relationship with Murray and holds the Senators general manager in the highest regard). Spezza isnt sure how the crowd at Canadian Tire Centre would react to his appearance when he makes his return to Ottawa on January 29, 2015 in a Dallas Stars jersey, but he does want Senators fans to know that he does not hold a grudge against them – even though he was often seen as a lightning rod for criticism by the fan base. “My time in Ottawa was fond and I know a lot of people are upset," Spezza said. "I would have loved to have the storybook career, where you spend your whole life in one city and play for one team, but thats part of the hard decision we had to make. This didnt just happen overnight and I woke up one morning and said ‘I want to leave. There was a lot of thought put into this.” Cheap Chargers Jerseys Cheap Rams Jersey Cheap Dolphins Jerseys Cheap Vikings Jerseys Cheap Patriots Jersey Cheap Saints Jerseys Cheap New York Giants Jerseys Cheap Jets Jerseys Cheap Raiders Jerseys Cheap Eagles Jerseys Cheap Steelers Jerseys Cheap 49ers Jerseys Cheap Seahawks Jerseys Cheap Buccaneers Jerseys Cheap Titans Jerseys Cheap Redskins Jerseys ' ' '

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Rookie Wil Myers helped the struggling Tampa Bay Rays get a key victory in the opener of a four-game series. Myers homered and had three RBIs, Alex Cobb pitched eight solid innings and the Rays took the lead for the first AL wild-card spot by beating the Texas Rangers 6-2 on Monday night. "Its big ... just to come out here and beat this team," Myers said. Texas remained a half-game ahead of Cleveland for the second AL wild-card spot. Myers had a second-inning solo shot and hit a two-run double during a four-run fifth. Cobb (9-3) allowed two runs, six hits, one walk and had 10 strikeouts. "At this point of the season, the position were in, every game is going to get bigger and bigger," Cobb said. "Yesterday was the biggest game of the season, today is the biggest game of the season, tomorrow will be the biggest game of the season. I dont think its unfair to say that. We realize the performance we have to put together out there every night, and I think were up for it." Matt Garza (9-6) gave up six runs and eight hits over 4 1-3 innings to lose his third straight start for the Rangers, who have lost seven in a row and are 2-12 in September. Garza is 3-5 with Texas since being acquired from the Chicago Cubs on July 22. Texas has not held a lead during the current skid. "Im not frustrated, Im confused," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "Im trying to figure out what we have to do to jump-start this offence." The announced crowd was just 10,724. The Rays entered with the majors lowest home attendance average of 18,747. Tampa Bay went up 6-2 in the fifth. After James Loney and Evan Longoria both had RBI singles against Garza, Myers drove in two with a double off Jason Frasor. "Those were really big knocks right there," Rays manager Joe Maddon said of Myers. Garza, who was the MVP of the 2008 AL Championship Series when Tampa Bay beat Boston, pitched against the Rays for the first time since being traded to the Cubs on Jan. 8, 2011. "My job is to help us get to October and Im still going to keep trying, keep pushing, keep working and get ready in five days," Garza said. "Keep grinding." The Rays took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on Desmond Jennings sacrifice fly. Texas pulled even at 2 during the fifth when Mitch Moreland, mired in an 0-for-22 slide, doubled and scored on Ian Kinslers double. Kinsler was caught attempting to steal third to end the inning. Myers put the Rays up 1-0 on his 13th homer, an opposite-field drive to right in the second. Cobb retired nine in a row, including his first four batters on strikeouts, before Kinsler doubled to start the fourth. After advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt by Elvis Andrus, Kinsler got tagged out during a rundown on Alex Rios grounder to third. A.J. Pierzynski tied it at 1 later in the fourth with an RBI single. Rangers centre fielder Leonys Martin made a strong defensive play in the third, throwing out Yunel Escobar, who tried to score from second on Ben Zobrists single. (4-3) to a pair of victories on Tuesday before 1,131 at the Maurice Richard Arena.TORONTO -- Andrew Stein and Glenn Macaulay bought into the Blue Jays hype. Best friends since kindergarten and lifelong baseball fans, the pair were swept up in the promise of 2013 and purchased season tickets. From the top level of Rogers Centre above home plate they watched as Toronto slumped through the spring then came alive during an 11-game winning streak only to finish last in the AL East. Excitement isnt a word they used to describe their hopes for 2014. "I wouldnt say worried," said Stein. "Not optimistic," said Macaulay. "Yeah, not optimistic," said Stein. "Maybe slightly uneasy that its just going to be a repeat of last year." Stein and Macaulay were among the Blue Jays season ticket holders at Rogers Centre on Wednesday for the teams annual State of the Franchise event. Team president and CEO Paul Beeston, general manager Alex Anthopoulos and manager John Gibbons were on hand to take questions as jazz played throughout the stadium and food and drinks were handed out to fans wondering just what the state of the team is. Anthopoulos had no surprise announcements, nor was he worried about being grilled despite promises of change going unfulfilled during a quiet off-season. "When you dont have a good season you expect theres criticism that comes with that, that goes without saying, thats part of it," he said. "But again, these fans, I think its a different type of setting because these are the season-seat holders. They support the club. They love the team good and bad. Obviously were here to be accountable and to make ourselves available to talk and answer whatever questions they might have." Torontos only notable acquisition has been catcher Dioner Navarro, who was brought on to replace J.P. Arencibia. Navarro, who hit .300 with 13 home runs and 34 RBIs in 240 at-bats with the Chicago Cubs last season, barely made the splash that all-stars Jose Reyes or R.A. Dickey did when Toronto traded for them prior to last season. "(Navarro will) be serviceable. Im not going to buy his jersey or anything," said Stein. The Blue Jays real need, the one Anthopoulos promised would be his winter focus, is starting pitching. Dickey, coming off a Cy Young season, struggled, although not as badly as Josh Johnson. J.A. Happ missed time after being hit in the head by a frightening comebacker in May, while Brandon Morrows season ended in July with a forearm injury.dddddddddddd Only Mark Buehrle, who also had a slow start to the season, performed to expectation. Torontos rotation finished with a 4.81 earned-run average last season, second worst in the majors, and the starters 899.1 innings pitched were 28th in baseball. But Toronto has stood pat during the off-season. Japanese phenom Masahiro Tanaka was signed by the New York Yankees before veteran Matt Garza joined the Milwaukee Brewers. Several pitchers such as Ervin Santana and Ubaldo Jimenez still remain on the market, but Anthopoulos said progress has been slowed by free agents who cost teams draft picks. That doesnt apply to the Blue Jays -- theyve got two protected first-round draft picks. But Anthopoulos remained non-committal. "We like some of the upside of the guys that are coming back. Wed still like to add," he said. "I think weve been very open about that. I dont know whats going to happen obviously between now and the start of camp. "Depending on how free agency goes or even the trade market, maybe its beyond that, but we are excited about some of the guys coming back, especially some of the young guys. Theres upside to the performance of a lot of these guys. But at the same time were still going to be active and try to get a starter." Whereas Anthopoulos could only ask fans to stick by the team, Gibbons said hes looking ahead after making peace with 2013. "After I was home for about two weeks I said, you know what, its time for a new season," said Gibbons. "Ive always been an optimistic guy. Its smart to look back and look at some areas to do things differently maybe to improve some things. But in the end youve got to turn the page and its a new start here in the next two months." Gibbons, who heard plenty of calls for his dismissal last season, isnt worried about the direction of the team. He acknowledged fans frustrations, and that there wont be as much good will in April as there was last year. "It sure would be nice me coming in here feeling good going to this thing having won something, but until you do that youre just hoping and dreaming. So hopefully we can do that." What, then, is the state of the Blue Jays? Ask again on Opening Day. PHILADELPHIA - Linebacker Jason Phillips, one of the first players signed by the Philadelphia Eagles under coach Chip Kelly, was released Tuesday before he played in a regular-season game for the team. Phillips signed a two-year, $1.46 million contract as a free agent in 2013 with the Eagles, but tore the ACL in his right knee the first week of training camp in 2013 and spent the season on injured reserve. He came back healthy this year, but was released two days before the teams third preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Originally a fifth-round pick by the Baltimore Ravens out of TCU, Phillips enjoyed his most success as a special teams performer and backup linebacker with the Carolina Panthers. His most productive season came for the Panthers in 2012 when he played in all 16 games, with two starts. The Eagles roster is at 89 players. All teams must make their first round of cuts by Tuesday, Aug. 26 and have their rosters at 75. Final cuts are Saturday, when the roster must be down to the regular-season maximum of 53 players. At times during a solid but not spectacular season, they looked all three. Still the defending AFC champions persevered, riding their top-ranked defence and key contributions from younger players to a 12-4 record and their eighth playoff appearance since 2000, remarkable consistency in a league where change is the only constant. On Tuesday, the Ottawa Redblacks introduced Henry Burris as their newest quarterback, joining Thomas DeMarco and Kevin Glenn, who were picked up in the expansion draft. Last week, the Blue Bombers made a substantial multi-year offer to Burris to take over the starters role. In a telling move, the veteran pivot turned down the offer, choosing instead to join the expansion Redblacks, assuming he thinks they offer a better chance at immediate success. Do you agree? Are the Redblacks a better option than the Blue Bombers right now? Last season, the Blue Bombers struggled to a 3-15 season and replaced head coach Tim Burke with Mike OShea, the likeable special teams coordinator from the Toronto Argonauts. Marcel Bellefeuille is back as the offensive coordinator, a position he took over last August. Changes are happening in the Manitoba capital in hopes of turning things around in short order. And in a league the size of the CFL, teams have gone from worst to competitive on many occasions so the Blue Bombers could very well make the playoffs as early as next season. Expansion teams rarely compete for a playoff spot In Ottawa, winning is not expected to come quickly. With a roster made up of players who were left exposed by existing teams in the expansion draft, itt will take some time to build a successful organization.dddddddddddd Thats what makes this move surprising. At 38 years of age, Burris window to win is small and yet, he decided the Redblacks offered a better opportunity than the Blue Bombers. Secondly, by making the offer to Burris after his release from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, the Blue Bombers made it clear who their starting quarterback would be in Week 1. There would be competition in training camp but the job would be his to lose. The situation is not so clear cut in the nations capital. Burris will have fellow veteran Glenn, who likely thought he had the inside track on the starters role before Tuesdays move, and De Marco, likely the quarterback of the future, to contend with. While the early nod may go to Burris, the other two candidates bring their own talents to the table and will be gunning for that top job. Many factors go into making the kind of decision Burris made on Tuesday and winning is usually at or near the top of the list for professional athletes. Taking everything into consideration, Burris decided Ottawa was a better fit than Winnipeg. Do you agree? Which team do you think offers the best opportunity to win now: Redblacks or Blue Bombers? SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Barring a change of heart from the league offices, Sacramento centre DeMarcus Cousins has played his last game of the season. He definitely went out with a bang. Cousins recorded his eighth straight double-double with 35 points and 15 rebounds but picked up his 16th technical foul of the season late in the fourth quarter of the Kings 106-103 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday night. By NBA rules, Cousins must sit out Sacramentos final regular season game at home against Phoenix on Wednesday. "Im not going to talk about it," said Cousins, who had sat for several minutes in front of his locker with his head hung low. Kings coach Mike Malone was willing to discuss it and said the team might contact the NBA to get the technical removed, citing Cousins most recent behaviour. The technical was his first since Feb. 25 and ended the longest stretch of his career without one. "I feel for him," Malone said. "He has made a concerted effort to handle his emotions and not get that last tech. Well try to do whatever we can to get that rescinded but its disappointing because I know it meant a lot to him." The Kings trailed by 11 in the third quarter and were down 82-81 before going on an 11-2 run to go in front for good. Cousins started the surge with a thunderous dunk and McCallum followed with consecutive 3-pointers, one from the left corner and the other from the right. The Timberwolves pulled to 100-98 with 1:13 left to play on three free throws by Kevin Love after Cousins was charged with the technical foul. Cousins then drove the baseline and dunked with 24.2 seconds remaining, helping Sacramento end a five-game losing streak while evening the season series with Minnesota. "Were still a team trying to grow and find ourselves," said Cousins, breaking his silence. "I think we took steps forward today. Weve been in those situations a couple times this season. Sometimes it went well, sometimes it didnt. We did a pretty good job tonight of handling the situation and overcoming adversity." J.J. Barea missed a 3-pointer and Love was off on a 16-foot jumper in the final 20 seconds for the Wolves. Love had 43 points and 11 rebounds for Minnesota after sitting out Fridays 112-110 win over Houston because of a hyperextended right elbow. "Our defence just wasnt good enough in the second half," Love said. "Offensively we were fine, but they kind of went on a run and never looked back." The Timberwolves lost after leading 62-51 with eight minutes left in the third in what might have been former Kings coach Rick Adelmans final appearance at Sleep Train Arena. The 67-year-old Minnesota coach remains a beloved figure in the states capital, having guided the Kings from 1998-2006. Sacramento made the playoffs in each of his eight seasons and havent been back since. Adelman clearly has fond memories of those glory days in Sacramento and hes been back numerous times as a visiting coach as well. This game, however, might hold special significance since it might be Adelmans last. He has taken time away from coaching each of the past two years to take care of his wife, Mary Kay, who has had health problems. Speculation around the NBA now is that Adelman will step away for good at the end of the season. "Ive always said that the eight years here were a tremendous experience," Adelman said. "We had a lot of fun, we had really good team and the fans during that run were terrific." Minnesota trailed by 11 early before going on a 12-0 run in the second quarter capped by Dante Cunninghams three-point play that put the Wolves up 40-32. Love finished the half with 13 points, including two free throws to give Minnesota a 52-47 halftime lead. The Timberwolves extended their lead to 62-51 with 8:03 left in the third, then Sacramento went on its big run. NEW YORK – The transition has been tough. That much is clear. Martin St. Louis had 29 goals and 62 points in 61 games with the Tampa Bay Lightning this season. After being traded to the New York Rangers at the March deadline, he scored just once and added seven assists in 19 games. "People were looking for me to get results and those tough times make you appreciate the good times," said St. Louis on the eve of his first playoffs in the Big Apple. "Ive failed a bunch of times, but I know Ive been successful many times too so, you know, Ive worked hard to get my game going. I feel comfortable here." It took awhile. Moving from sunny Florida where hockey players are as anonymous as mailmen to The City that Never Sleeps where the bright lights can either immortalize or stun was never going to be simple. "It is tough, I mean, Ive been somewhere for 13 seasons. In one place everyone knew me, I knew everybody, now you come to [a new] place, I think people know of me and I dont think they know me and that takes time," St. Louis explained. And the time is now. St. Louis had four assists in his last two games before the playoffs began. He had two assists in New Yorks Game 1 win on Thursday night. It seems like hes heating up at the perfect time. "This is playoff time and this is the time when you get judged and Im excited about that," he said. St. Louis did everything you can in Tampa. He won the Art Ross Trophy as the NHLs leading scorer twice, including in last years lockout-shortened campaign. He won the Hart Trophy as the league MVP (2003-04). He hoisted the Stanley Cup a decade ago. He has averaged more than a point per playoff game (70 in 64 career post-season contests). "At the end of the day, this is different," said St. Louis, who is well-known for his intense fitness regiment. "This is different. Its not because you had success that youre going to have success. Youve got to go earn it every day and Im going to try and do that starting with Game 1 of this series." Despite his track record in the game, St. Louis believes he still needs to prove himself to his new teammates. "Respects not just given, you earn that respect and I think I did that in Tampa and now Im trying to build that here and theres no better [time] to do that then going through a playoff experience." St. Louis has made a career of proving doubters wrong. At first, they said he was too small to make the NHL. He went undrafted and unsigned. Finally the Calgary Flames gave him a shot before ultimately buying out his contract after he was passed over in the 2000 expansion draft. Then there were the Olympic snubs in 2010 and 2014 that once again cast him in the underdog role. And now here we are again, with some speculating St. Louis made a major miscalculation leaving Tampa where he was playing well and working alongside Steven Stamkos on a team that appears to be on the rise. And despite that, St. Louis insists he hasnt let his mind wander to his legacy and how it may have been altered by what has happened in the last few months. "Right now, its so magnified, because of where we are, I dont think Ive had time to focus on big-picture stuff. I think Ive been focusing on getting in [the playoffs] and now that were in, doing good things. I think Ill focus on big-picture stuff maybe later in the summer. Im trying to stay in the moment. With Washington teammate Nene drawing double-teams coming off his big game against the Lakers, Gortat scored 25 points on 11-of-12 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Wizards to a 100-92 win in overtime over Milwaukee on Wednesday night.TAMPA, Fla. - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers wound up winners after a season-ending loss.Drew Brees shrugged off three interceptions — two of them stopping promising third-quarter drives — to throw for 281 yards in the New Orleans Saints 23-20 win over the Buccaneers on Sunday. With the loss, Tampa Bay (2-14) locked up the first pick in next springs draft. Its been a long year, first-year Buccaneers coach Lovie Smith said. When youre down there thats one consolation, I guess, from the season weve had. Thats where we are now.Tampa Bay played a number of non-starters, especially in the second half when the Saints rallied for the win.I dont think anybody tanked it, Tampa Bay quarterback Josh McCown said. We played the guys we played to rotate guys in and give them a look. As far as players are concerned, the draft, that stuff is not relevant as far to how were playing. We competed hard and thats the main thing. Got a chance to evaluate some younger guys as we build this thing.Brees 36-yard touchdown pass to Marques Colston gave the Saints (7-9) their first lead with 1:57 remaining. Junior Galette sacked McCown for a safety that provided the final margin. It wasnt clean, Saints coach Sean Payton said. It wasnt perfect. I was pleased the way we hung in there in the second half. We came up with enough plays to take the lead at the end.Doug Martin rushed for a season-best 108 yards and rookie Mike Evans set a Tampa Bay record with his 12th touchdown reception as the Bucs flirted with damaging their chances of winding up with the No. 1 overall selection.Mark Ingram scored on a 1-yard run early in the fourth quarter, trimming New Orleans deficit to 20-14. Keenan Lewis interception and return to the 50 led to Brees TD pass to Colston to make it 21-20.The Saints were eliminated from playoff contention by last weeks 30-14 loss to Atlanta.Patrick Murrayss 39-yard field goal and McCowns 6-yard TD pass to Evans staked Tampa Bay to an early 10-0 lead.dddddddddddd One of the leagues weakest offences kept moving the ball at will against the New Orleans defence. In building a 20-7 halftime edge, the Bucs outgained the leagues No. 1 offence 248 yards to 118, including a whopping 148-89 advantage on the ground, where both Martin and rookie Charles Sims were effective. Then the Saints outgained the Bucs 220-32 after halftime.Tampa Bay controlled the ball for nearly 20 minutes of the opening half, a stark contrast to an early October meeting between the division rivals in which the Saints ran 86 offensive plays to Tampa Bays 54. New Orleans won that matchup, overcoming an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit before prevailing 37-31 in overtime.Evans and Vincent Jackson caught passes on the first two plays of the game, making them the first tandem of Bucs receivers to top 1,000 yards in the same season. It was a goal for me and V-Jax to both have it, Evans said. So thats pretty special. Its the fourth straight 1,000-yard season — third with Tampa Bay — for Jackson, who left the game later in the first quarter and did not return because of a groin injury. Thats tied for the second-longest active streak behind Calvin Johnsons five.Evans, meanwhile, broke the team single-season record for TD receptions. He had shared the mark with Mike Williams, who had 11 as a rookie in 2010.Evans didnt play most of the second half as the Bucs looked at other receivers.Brees was 24 of 38. He extended the go-ahead drive with a 4-yard completion to Jimmy Graham on fourth-and-2.NOTES: Tampa Bay LB Mason Foster was inactive because of a sore Achilles tendon. ... DETROIT - David Price walked off the mound Tuesday night wondering if he had just blown the AL Central title for his new team.It didnt take long for his team to improve his mood. After Price blew a 3-0 lead in the top of the ninth, the Detroit Tigers only needed three batters to pull out a 4-3 victory and hold on to their one-game lead in the division. With the score tied 3-3, Ian Kinsler led off the ninth with a single, took second when Jake Petricka (1-6) walked Torii Hunter and scored when Miguel Cabrera lined a base hit to left field.I went into the top of the ninth knowing that I had to finish it off, Price said. I didnt care if I gave up two runs, but I couldnt give up three. Im just glad that our offence saved me.Hunter agreed that the offence wanted to make a statement and pick up Price. When youve got a 3-0 lead in the top of the ninth and David Price on the mound, you think the game is over, he said. But then they tie it, and we had to go right back out there and win it. Kins did a great job, I had a good at-bat to draw the walk and then Miggy did what Miggy does. For most of the night, it looked like Price was going to show exactly why the Tigers had traded for him at the deadline, taking a three-hit shutout into the ninth. Adam Eaton singled and moved to third on Alexei Ramirezs double. That got Joe Nathan up in the pen, and after Jose Abreu struck out, Avisail Garcia lined a two-run single to centre.Brad Ausmus visited the mound, drawing boos from the crowd, but he left Price in.Dayan Viciedo flew out to right for the second out, and Paul Konerko, who was honoured by the Tigers before the game, singled to move Garcia to third. Marcus Semien then blooped a single to centre, tying the game. With the way David was pitching, it didnt look too good for us, White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. We got it to the bottom of the ninth, but first and second with no one out for Miggy isnt a great situation, either.Nathan (5-4) came in to get the final out, and picked up the victory after Petricka couldnt get an out in the bottom of the inning.White Sox rookie Scott Carroll allowed two runs a€” one earned a€” in six-plus innings. He gave up five hits and two walks while striking out four.Chicago almost broke a scoreless tie in the fifth, as Josh Phegley hit Prices 3-2 pitch to the wall in left, but J.D. Martinez had plenty of time to set himself at the wall and reach up to make the catch to rob a home run. Price broke into a wry smile as he watched Martinez make the play. The Tigers took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Rajai Davis singled, and was running on the pitch when Kinsler hit what would have otherwise been an easy double-play ball. Now in scoring position, Davis stole third and scored when Phegleys throw trickled past Marcus Semien and into left.Detroit used more speed to get a run in the seventh, as pinch-runner Andrew Romine was able to go from first to third on Semiens error, and score on Kinslers single. Hunter followed with a ground-rule double to make it 3-0.TRAINERS ROOMWhite Sox: Eaton returned to the lineup after missing two games to deal with a personal matter. He led off against Price. ... With the White Sox out of the race, LHP Chris Sale will make his final start of the season on Wednesday instead of starting Tuesday and Sunday on normal rest. Ventura said that with Sale having been injured earlier this year, it made sense to ease him into the off-season.Tigers: RHP Anibal Sanchez (pectoral strain) was activated from the disabled list before Tuesdays game, and will finish the season pitching out of the bullpen. Ausmus said, because of Sanchezs outstanding pitch selection, he plans to use him in high-leverage situations.UP NEXTThe teams finish the three-game series Wednesday afternoon with Sale (12-4, 2.20) facing Justin Verlander (14-12, 4.68) in each pitchers last start of the regular season.CELEBRATING KONERKOBefore the game, the Tigers honoured Konerko by presenting him with a framed box containing a first-base bag, a jar of dirt from the right-handed batters box and a list of his accomplishments at Comerica Park. He leads all visiting players in hits, runs, total bases and RBIs since the stadium opened in 2000, and trails David Ortiz by one home run.NO ROOKIE JITTERSCarroll said that he had a great time pitching in a pennant race, even if it wasnt his team that is in contention.Thats certainly as close to a playoff game as Ive ever come, he said. It was really cool. Will Richardson Jersey . Kansas City became the first team in baseball history to win four extra-inning games in a single postseason on Friday, as Alex Gordon crushed a leadoff homer in the 10th and Mike Moustakas added the deciding two-run blast in the Royals 8-6 win. They kick things off Friday against the Buffalo Sabres and then head to Toronto to take on the Maple Leafs on Saturday. Will Richardson Jaguars Jersey . It was a loss. But it was also a learning experience. Deron Williams and Joe Johnson had 24 points each to lift Brooklyn to a 94-87 win over the Raptors, making their first playoff appearance since 08. "I thought we played a little bit as expected as it is our first playoff game," Toronto coach Dwane Casey said.INDIANAPOLIS - The Colts may be getting healthy just in time for the playoffs. On Monday, coach Chuck Pagano said he anticipated having most of his injured players back this week and available for Sundays playoff game against the Bengals.Yeah, and I think youd love to be 100 per cent from a health standpoint, Pagano said. Were not 100 per cent. Youre never going to be at this time of year. Were hopeful to get the guys that I talked about earlier, get them back and get them back on the field. The two-time AFC South champions have been riddled with injuries over the second half of the season, particularly along the offensive line where the Colts have used 10 different starting combinations this season.Although the Colts (11-5) did not earn a first-round bye, they did have two weeks to rest injured players and tune up for the post-season.Pagano is optimistic that tight end Dwayne Allen (knee), safety Sergio Brown (bruised hand), right tackle Gosder Cherilus (groin), inside linebacker Jerrell Freeman (hamstring), guard Joe Reitz (ankle) and receiver Reggie Wayne (groin, triceps) will all be on the practice field later this week affter the team takes Tuesday off.ddddddddddddTwo players, backup offensive lineman A.Q. Shipley (left ankle) and outside linebacker Bjoern Werner (shoulder), are considered day to day.Pagano also said the team is awaiting test results on right guard Hugh Thornton, who was carted off the field after injuring his right shoulder in the regular season finale Sunday. But the possible return of Cherilus and Reitz could help solidify the makeshift line. Last weekend, rookie Jack Mewhort moved from left guard to right tackle for the first time. Shipley, who opened the season as the starting centre, played left guard. And with Thornton hurt and Reitz out, backup Lance Louis took most of the snaps at right guard.Optimistic, hopeful, all of that, Pagano said when asked about having some semblance of his original starting line intact Sunday. Thatd be nice. The Colts are still trying to beat the clock on ticket sales, too. Chief operating officer Pete Ward said there were about 7,000 tickets remaining about 30 minutes before the Colts offices closed Monday.___Online:AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL Cheap Chargers Jerseys Cheap Rams Jersey Cheap Dolphins Jerseys Cheap Vikings Jerseys Cheap Patriots Jersey Cheap Saints Jerseys Cheap New York Giants Jerseys Cheap Jets Jerseys Cheap Raiders Jerseys Cheap Eagles Jerseys Cheap Steelers Jerseys Cheap 49ers Jerseys Cheap Seahawks Jerseys Cheap Buccaneers Jerseys Cheap Titans Jerseys Cheap Redskins Jerseys ' ' '

SAN FRANCISCO -- Jeff Samardzija struck out a season-high 10 for his first win since last August, leading the Chicago Cubs past the San Francisco Giants 8-4 on Monday. Samardzija (1-4) allowed six hits and walked none in seven-plus innings. He also had an RBI double during a three-run fourth to help snap his 16-start winless streak. The right-hander entered with six no-decisions in his first 10 outings this year despite leading the majors with a 1.46 ERA. Nate Schierholtz hit his first home run of the season, and Darwin Barney drove in two runs to help the Cubs come back from a 3-1 deficit. Pablo Sandoval homered and drove in three runs for the Giants, who had won four in a row. Sandoval has five home runs and 12 RBIs in his last eight games. Yusmeiro Petit (3-2) gave up four runs and six hits in five innings while filling in for injured starter Matt Cain, who was scratched after exiting his last outing with a strained right hamstring. Petit struck out five and walked none. Left-hander David Huff allowed four runs and seven hits in 1 1-3 innings of relief as the Cubs provided plenty of runs to back Samardzijas long-sought victory. Chicago had lost nine of Samardzijas first 10 starts. He had not won since Aug. 24 at San Diego last season, even though he has allowed more than two runs only twice this year, including Monday. Cubs manager Rick Renteria pulled Samardzija after Angel Pagan singled leading off the eighth. It was the sixth time in Samardzijas career he had at least 10 strikeouts. Justin Grimm got three outs in the eighth and Neil Ramirez pitched a scoreless ninth. That Samardzijas skid ended at San Francisco -- which entered with the best record in the majors -- only made it that much sweeter. The Giants hottest hitter capitalized on two of the few mistakes Samardzija made. After Pagan reached when Samardzija dropped the ball for an error while covering first base, Sandoval singled with two outs in the first to give the Giants a 1-0 lead. The Cubs came back in the third on a solo shot by Schierholtz, a former Giants outfielder. Sandoval put San Francisco up 3-1 with a golf-like swing on a pitch that looked well below the strike zone in the fourth. Samardzija hit a tying, two-out double and scored on Emilio Bonifacios triple during a three-run fifth that put the Cubs in front 4-3. Welington Castillo and Barney each hit RBI singles in the sixth off Huff. Anthony Rizzo and Luis Valbuena each drove home a run in the seventh to extend Chicagos lead to 8-3. Brandon Crawfords RBI single in the seventh accounted for San Franciscos final run. NOTES: The Cubs activated OF Justin Ruggiano from the 15-day disabled list and optioned OF Ryan Kalish to Triple-A Iowa. ... Notes on Fraser, Murray, Vanek, Carter, Vatanen, Andersen and more. FRASER THE OT HERO FOR BRUINS The Montreal Canadiens had an opportunity to take a 3-1 series lead against the favoured Boston Bruins with Game Four headed to overtime scoreless. Then, Bruins rookie LW Matt Fraser knocked a loose puck into the net to give the Bruins a 1-0 win, tying the series at two games apiece. Fraser, a 24-year-old winger called up to replace demoted winger Justin Florek, had three goals and five points in 27 career NHL games, but has been an effective scorer in the AHL, scoring 90 goals in 179 AHL games over the past three seasons. Fraser, who was acquired from Dallas as part of the Tyler Seguin trade, joined Carl Soderberg and Loui Eriksson on a Bruins third line that dominated play, the trio on the ice for more than 70% of 5-on-5 shot attempts, led by Fraser at 74.1%. Canadiens D P.K. Subban played 22:52, the first time under 26 minutes in this series, yet 1:19 into overtime, when Fraser scored, the Habs had the pairing of Douglas Murray and Mike Weaver on defence and that should have been an indication of trouble. That pairing was obliterated in terms of puck possession, on the ice for four shot attempts for and 20 against. Francis Bouillon wasnt great for Montreal, but hes been more effective than Murray, who has been on ice for 12 shot attempts for and 42 against (22.2 Corsi%) in two games. While were pointing out troubling signs for the Canadiens, RW Thomas Vanek didnt have a single shot attempted in 16:09 of ice time. The only other Canadiens to get zero shot attempts were Daniel Briere, who played a game-low 8:02, and Weaver. Montreals leader in shot attempts was captain Brian Gionta, with eight. Bostons leader, in terms of shot attempts, was D Dougie Hamilton, who had eight in 23:28, his second-highest ice time of the playoffs. If the Canadiens are going to pull off this series upset, they are really going to have to earn it. The series is even even though the Bruins have held the lead for less than four minutes in four games. Thats not to say that tthe Bruins havent been the better team -- theyve controlled more of the play -- but this series was there for the taking and now its a best-of-three with two games in Boston.dddddddddddd DUCKS GET ON THE BOARD The Anaheim Ducks got a late second-period goal from Teemu Selanne, then needed a late third-period marker from Ben Lovejoy to ultimately give them a 3-2 lead in Game Three against the Los Angeles Kings. The Kings now lead the series two games to one. The Kings held a possession edge throughout the game, particularly taking advantage against the Ducks line of Mathieu Perreault, Patrick Maroon and Teemu Selanne, a trio that was on the ice for 22.2% or less of 5-on-5 shot attempts. At the same time, Maroon set up Anaheims first goal, on the power play and, as noted, Selanne scored a crucial go-ahead goal. Anaheim was forced to turn to G Jonas Hiller for the last 9:58 of the third period, as starter Frederik Andersen left with a lower-body injury. Andersen had stopped 22 of 23 shots when he got hurt. Jeff Carter led the Kings with a goal and an assist, four shots on goal and seven shot attempts, though Carter and linemates Tanner Pearson and Tyler Toffoli started more than 80% of their shifts in the offensive zone, so they were tilted in that direction. For the Ducks, it was Ryan Getzlaf, who had an assist, four shots and seven attempts. The Ducks inserted D Sami Vatanen into the lineup, playing the Finnish rookie 20:19; only Francois Beauchemin played more among Anaheim defencemen. Theres a reasonable argument to be made that, although undersized, Vatanen should already be handling regular minutes on the Ducks blueline, rather than toiling in the minors waiting for a call-up when the team is in trouble. After dropping the first two games of the series at home, the Ducks desperately needed to get a positive result in Game Three. It wasnt easy, and they lost their starting goaltender in the process, but their win makes the Freeway Series much more interesting heading towards Game Four. TORONTO – Jose Bautista returned to the Blue Jays starting lineup, as the designated hitter, on Tuesday afternoon. He made his presence felt at first opportunity, hitting a home run to left-centre field in the first inning. The homer was Bautistas first since June 6, a span of 17 games. The slugger wasnt yet ready to resume playing defence. "I think the decision was made by Gibby to give me one or two days to kind of ease back into it," said Bautista. "Depending on how I feel tomorrow, possibly playing right field. If not, definitely in Oakland sometime." Bautistas bat is a welcome sight. However, because he couldnt play right field, manager John Gibbons was forced to send Adam Lind to the bench. The Blue Jays usually employ a first base-designated hitter combination of Lind and Edwin Encarnacion when an opponent starts a right-handed pitcher. Encarnacion started at first base on Tuesday. Baseballs leader with 59 walks and a .432 on-base percentage, Bautista did not take issue with Gibbons decision to keep him out of right field for at least one more day. "I want to play today and Im consciously not going to fight my manager because what hes doing I think is reasonable," said Bautista. "Same thing tomorrow. But if I feel well then theres no restrictions. Its not if I want to play and Im going to make it worse; I think Im old enough and disciplined enough to not risk making it worse by playing defence too soon." The Blue Jays went 3-4 in Bautistas absence from the starting lineup, including three-straight losses to the Chicago White Sox in games started by a left-handed pitcher. Toronto is scheduled to face three left-handers during its four-game set in Oakland, which starts on Thursday evening. The club could face two more southpaws next week in its three-game series in Anaheim. Louis Blues and Buffalo Sabres came to an agreement on a big trade that may only offer incremental improvement to the Blues in their quest for a Stanley Cup.TORONTO -- After reliever Darren Oliver came out of his final game in the majors, Mark DeRosa sought him out on the Blue Jays bench. "I said How do you feel?" said the 38-year-old DeRosa. "He said I feel great. And I said Thats how it should be. You should be able to walk away on your own terms. "So Im happy for him." Oliver retired on a high note Sunday, striking out two Tampa Bay Rays in the swansong to his 20-year major-league career. The 42-year-old left-hander came on to a standing ovation to open the seventh against the meat of the Rays order, with Toronto trailing 7-3. He struck out Wil Myers and Evan Longoria while inducing James Loney to fly out. He threw 11 pitches, eight for strikes, before giving way to Steve Delabar for the eighth inning in a game Toronto lost 7-6 after a comeback fell just short in the final game of the Jays season. "It was great, a great run," Oliver said of his career. "But eventually every good thing must come to an end, unfortunately. Mine just happened to end at 42, I guess. But thats all right. It was great." The six-foot-three 250-pounder leaves the game with a 118-98 record in 7666 games and 1,915.dddddddddddd2 innings pitched. He struck out 1,259 and walked 720 in a career that included three stints in Texas as well as stops in St. Louis, Boston, Colorado, the Angeles and Mets. "He had some kind of career," said Jays manager John Gibbons. "Twenty years -- very few guys get to do that. "To play a very, very small part and be able to manage him is a pretty neat thing. He was one of the better pitchers in the game for a long time. Longevity in this business is hard to come by but to do it for that long and be that effective until the very end, that speaks volumes." Added DeRosa: "I look more at not only what hes been able to accomplish but the way hes gone about it. With class and grace. Hes handled himself like a pro from start to finish." Oliver, the son of former major league infielder Bob Oliver, returned this season after the Jays exercised a US$3-million option for 2013 During spring training, he said good health, good teams and good coaches helped keep him in the game so long. He also worked at it, studying opposition batters. "Theres really no magic explanation why Ive stayed around so long," he said. CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Cole Hamels threw off the mound for the first time this spring on Wednesday morning, an important step in his eventual return to the rotation. Hamels made his first career opening day start in 2013 and is unlikely to be ready for the assignment this year. Hamels entered camp behind schedule after battling biceps soreness in November. He was told to stop throwing and halt his weightlifting program for the rest of the winter. On the mound, Hamels threw 35 pitches in his side session. "Very encouraging," manager Ryne Sandberg said. Although the Phillies expect Hamels to be ready at some point in April, they are not going to push him in an effort to get him to the mound on opening day or the first week of the season. "If you do that with a guy, hes pressing to get ready for one, and thats the last thing we want to do," pitching coach Bob McClure said. "Two, if hes only up to 60 pitches or something like that, now youre going to tax your bullpen. I know hes anxious because he feels so good. But I think we kind of need to take a cautious road here." McClure said Hamels looked "really, really good" in his workout. The 30-year-old Hamels is in the second season since signing the most lucrative contract in Phillies history, a six-year deal worth $144 million. Hamels often pitched in bad luck last year, racking up just one win in the seasons first two months. But he had a 2.68 ERA in the seasons final three months and reached the 200-inning plateau for the fourth straight season. Hamels, the 2008 World Series MVP, finished at 8-14 with a 3.60 ERA in 33 starts. Diamondbacks Jerseys . MIAMI -- LeBron James is dealing with a few aches and pains, which obviously is not the best news for the Miami Heat with two weeks left in the regular season. Come game time, though, nothing seems to be ailing him. Bringing the crowd out of its seats with a pair of highlight-reel dunks in the first half, then drilling a deep 3-pointer to end the third quarter, James was his typical effective self on Wednesday night. He led Miami with 17 points, and the Heat stayed atop the Eastern Conference with a wire-to-wire 96-77 win over the Milwaukee Bucks. "If I feel like I can give something, Ive got to be out there for my teammates," James said. "Its my obligation to be out there for them. Im dealing with a few things, but for me to sit out, I have to be dealing with a lot more." Chris Bosh scored 15 and Mario Chalmers scored 14 for the Heat. "I like our effort," Bosh said. "We just have to take care of business and do what were supposed to do." Ramon Sessions scored 19 points for Milwaukee, which got 14 from Jeff Adrien, 11 from Brandon Knight and 10 from John Henson. Zaza Pachulia grabbed 16 rebounds in 26 minutes for the NBA-worst Bucks, who have now had 11 games this season in which they never led. "Getting down against a team like that is definitely tough because they continue to play hard," Knight said. "They dont let up and they dont make many mistakes. ... Credit to them but we didnt execute defensively and we didnt play hard enough." The Bucks fell to 14-61 with seven games remaining and are now only one loss away from tying the franchise record for most defeats in a season. "As we wind this thing down with seven games to go, the thing I want is see them compete," Bucks coach Larry Drew said. "Were dealing with adverse times. This is really a good time to see what guys are truly made of." James said he doesnt currently plan on sitting out any of Miamis final eight games, and Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said he probably wouldnt even think about any strategy to get him some rest for at least anotherr week -- a stance that cant come as a surprise, considering the East No.dddddddddddd. 1 seed is hardly secure. With the win, Miami (52-22, .703) remained percentage points ahead of Indiana (53-23, .697) in the East race. The Pacers beat Detroit 101-94 earlier Wednesday. "Its tempting to start to look ahead. Were only two weeks away," Spoelstra said. "But theres so much basketball left in these two weeks. And it is very compelling at this time of year, and we are trying to accomplish some things. So as guys start to get back into the lineup we want to take a step forward as a group. And theres a process to that." At some point, that process will presumably include getting Dwyane Wade, Ray Allen and Greg Oden back into the lineup. Wade missed his 23rd game of the season, his fourth straight with a hamstring problem. The Heat are 11-1 in the last 12 games that Wade has missed. Allen has been sidelined by a flu bug that struck his entire family, though hes nearing a return. Oden has been sidelined by back spasms, with Spoelstra saying hes also close to getting back. "Were sharpening our swords," Spoelstra said. Milwaukee opened the fourth quarter with six straight points, cutting Miamis lead to 14 and getting the Heat to call time-out. Whatever doubt existed at that point, if any, didnt last long. Norris Cole snapped Miamis scoreless drought with a beat-the-shot-clock 3-pointer as he was leaning to his right with 8:35 left, Rashard Lewis swished another 3 on the next Heat possession to restore the 20-point cushion, and that basically ensured James would remain in his warmups for the rest of the evening. NOTES: The Bucks led the Heat for a total of 2 minutes, 21 seconds this season -- in three games. ... Miamis Udonis Haslem earned a technical late in the half after a bit too much physicality with Adrien under the basket. Haslem also got his 1,500th career offensive rebound. ... The Heat moved to 30-6 at home, the seventh time in franchise history theyve won that many in Miami. ... Milwaukees O.J. Mayo missed the game with an ankle injury. HOUSTON - Dwight Howard isnt quite where he wants to be.He was still good enough to lead the Houston Rockets to a win in his return from injury.Howard had 26 points and 13 rebounds, James Harden had a triple-double, and the Rockets overcame an early deficit for a 108-96 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Saturday night.Howard, who missed the previous 11 games with a strained right knee, also reached a milestone, eclipsing 10,000 rebounds in his career.I didnt know what to expect, he said. I just wanted to come there and give my teammates everything I had. I didnt play a perfect game, but I gave the hardest effort I could for my team.Howard said hes still getting his conditioning back and that his knee got stiff when hed return to the game after a break.Harden had 24 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds for his third career triple-double. He almost didnt get it, grabbing his 10th rebound with less than a second left in the game. He almost had one a few seconds earlier, but teammate Troy Daniels swiped it from him.I almost tackled Troy out of bounds trying to get that rebound, Harden said with a laugh. Everybody in the arena knew what was going on but Troy.Ty Lawson had 19 points and 12 assists, and Darrell Arthur had a season-high 20 points for the Nuggets. We got dominated by their big guys inside, Denver coach Brian Shaw said. Howard and (Donatas) Motiejunas we couldnt stop when they threw the ball in the post. They just backed us down and got whatever they wanted.Houston trailed by 14 points in the first half before taking the lead with a big second quarter and keeping it the rest of the game. They led by seven points at the beginning of the fourth quarter and had extended the lead to 92-77 midway through the period.Coach Kevin McHale was a bit worried about how Howard would do after last playing on Nov. 17. It was apparent there was no reason for concern with the All-Star centres dominant performance. McHale planned to limit him to 20-24 minutes, but kept him in for almost 30.Dwight did fantastic ... its really hard to take that much time off, a month, and then come back and have any semblance of rhythm at all, McHale said. He looked good and now we just have to build from here.Howard also had three blocks, two assists and a steal.About the only thing that slowed him down was a bloody nose he got early in the third quarter. He played several minutes after that with blood smeared on his crisp white jersey just above the R in Rockets and white paper stuffed up his right nostril. He said he got hit in the nose, but refused to elaborate. He went to the bench with about 4 minutes left in the quarter and changed into a fresh jersey.JJ Hickson scored the first basket of the second half to get the Nuggets within four points. But the Rockets scored the next eight points, thanks to 3s by Harden and Trevor Ariza, to make it 62-50 with 10 minutes left in the third.Howard made it 72-59 with a layup with about 5 1/2 minutes remaining in the third quarter. Denver outscored Houston 14-8 the rest of the quarter to cut the lead to 80-73 entering the fourth.Houston trailed by 14 points about eight minutes before halftime when they went on a 21-4 run to take a 47-44 lead with about 2 1/2 minutes left in the quarter. Motiejunas got things going in that span, scoring the first nine points of the run.TIP-INSNuggets: Lawson is the first player to have 10 or more assists against Houston this season. ... Chivas USA (5-7-5) earned its third consecutive win when Torres scored his 12th goal of the season, and his fourth in four games. Marco Delgados shot ricocheted off Impact defender Matteo Ferrari to an unmarked Torres, who tapped the ball to himself with his right foot and sent a nine-yard volley between goalkeeper Troy Perkins and the right-wing post. Until Torres scored, Montreal (3-8-5) had not allowed a goal in 405 successive minutes spanning three MLS games and the Canadian Championship win against Toronto FC on June 4. The NHL Department of Player Safety offered Philadelphia Flyers forward Zac Rinaldo an in-person hearing late Tuesday night after his controversial hit on Pittsburgh Penguins defenceman Kris Letang. Late Wednesday, Rinaldos agent, Todd Reynolds said his client has waived the right to appear. The hearing, which will take place over the phone on Monday at 12:30pm et, is still considered in-person, meaning the NHL retains the option to asses a suspension of six games or more. Rinaldo hit Letang into the boards from behind late in the first period and was given a five-minute major as well as a game misconduct. Letang remained on the ice for a few minutes before eventually getting up under his own power and skating to the locker room. He did not return to the game. The 24-year-old Rinaldo has been suspended before as he was slapped with a four-game penalty last season for an illegal hit to the head of Buffalo Sabres defenceman Chad Ruhwedel. Rinaldo spoke about the incident with Letang after Tuesdays game. I changed the whole game, man, he said. Who knows what the game would have been like if I didnt do what I did? D.J Augustin scored 20 points and Taj Gibson had 19 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Chicago Bulls to a 102-94 win over Philadelphia on Wednesday night, handing the 76ers their 22nd straight loss. The Sixers are four losses shy of matching the NBA record for the longest single-season losing streak. The Cleveland Cavaliers set the record of 26 consecutive losses in the 2010-11 season. The Vancouver Grizzlies (1995-96), Denver Nuggets (1997-98) and Charlotte Bobcats (2011-12) each lost 23 straight. "Winnable game," 76ers coach Brett Brown said. "I say that because a group thats been losing ... still stays together. They still compete. Im proud of them." The Sixers also lost their 17th straight home game since beating Charlotte on Jan. 15. They were 8-11 at home at that point and had already defeated Miami, the Bulls, and Houston in Philadelphia. After the Sixers were 3-0 following a Nov. 2 win over Chicago, fans held signs that said, "3-0. Thats No Bull." That seems like another season at times after the Sixers traded Evan Turner, Spencer Hawes and Lavoy Allen at the deadline for draft picks, a necessary step for a rebuilding franchise. Unlike most of the first 21 losses in the streak, the Sixers were competitive until the final possessions, never letting the Bulls lead by more than 11. Sixers centre Byron Mullens, who hadnt attempted a shot all game, hit consecutive 3s to pull the Sixers to 83-80. He made a nifty save on a ball headed out of bounds, leading to Henry Sims bucket and a foul. With a chance to tie the game, Sims missed the free throw with 8:19 left. Thaddeus Young bailed him out a possession later with a 3-pointer that made it 85-all. Joakim Noah buried a go-ahead 3 from the top of the arc and Augustin followed with one from the sideline to put the Bulls up 91-85. Tony Wrotens 3 made it 93-90 but it was just more false hope. Carlos Boozers emphatic dunk stretched the lead to six and the Bulls did enough to hang on and move to .500 onn the road (17-17).dddddddddddd The Sixers have lost three of four by less than 10 points after losing each of the previous 10 games by double-digits. "We knew it would be this type of game," Augustin said. "We just tried to fight them until the end and it was a fight, a real fight." The Sixers could make it 23 straight with a loss Friday to New York. Then three straight on the road at Chicago, San Antonio and Houston. If the Sixers lose all of those games, the potential record 27th loss would come March 29 vs. Detroit. Young scored 24 points for the Sixers and Wroten had 17. "Were going to get one soon," Wroten said. Boozer had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Bulls and Noah added 14 points and 10 boards. The Sixers solid 11-for-24 3-point shooting was undone by a 9 of 19 mark from the free-throw line. "There is just no inch for error," Brown said. "Theres no wiggle room at all." The Sixers stayed tight and chipped away in the third, making it 64-61 on Youngs 3-pointer. Sims was 0 for 7 from the floor until his first basket cut it to 64-63. The Sixers just couldnt make the clutch basket or two to finally take the lead. Theyd get as close again as two points in the third and trailed only 75-69 at the end of the quarter. "I think Bretts done a great job with them," Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. "Theyve got a lot of moving parts. I give a guy like Young a lot of credit for his professionalism -- how hard he plays. They shot the ball well. The Bulls played without Derrick Rose, the former MVP point guard who tore the meniscus in his right knee at Portland in November and was ruled out for the remainder of the season. Thibodeau said Rose could could be ready to return if he gets the call to play this summer for Team USA at the world championships. "I know hed like to do it," Thibodeau said. "I know how USA basketball feels about him. If hes cleared to do it, Id love to see him do it." NOTES: The Sixers are 3-32 since a four-game winning streak ended Jan. 4. ... "A great feat, a great success for all Italian tennis," Italy captain Corrado Barazzutti said. "It was time we got back to the semifinals. Its credit to everyone, to a team which has a great character. It was a victory of character." Britain was looking to reach the semifinals for the first time since 1981 but Fognini was in commanding form to end Murrays run of 19 consecutive singles victories in the competition. Seppi rarely struggled against a player ranked 127 places below him and comfortably served out for the match. Italy will play Switzerland in Septembers semifinal. It was Murrays second defeat in 20 singles matches in the Davis Cup. Fognini moved to 14-2 on clay this season. "He played very well today, thats for sure," Murray said. "Hes a very good player especially on this surface, so I knew it was going to be a tough one and I wasnt able to play well enough. I did OK physically, not the best, but Ive been worse."
