ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Although Teemu Selanne has been playing in the NHL for more than two decades, he had never seen anything he could even compare to the goonery in the Anaheim Ducks latest victory. The Vancouver Canucks third-period antics aside, the NHL also hasnt seen much like these Ducks as they cut a swath through the league on their merciless winning streak. Corey Perry had two goals and two assists, Selanne had two goals and an assist, and the steamrolling Ducks beat Vancouver 9-1 Wednesday night for their 18th victory in 19 games. Nick Bonino scored also two goals for the NHL-leading Ducks, who earned their eighth consecutive victory by scoring a club-record six power-play goals against the NHLs best penalty-killing team. The Ducks got those opportunities thanks to a wholesale collapse by the Canucks, who picked up 58 penalty minutes in the third period with several old-time-hockey attempts to start a brawl. With four Canucks in the dressing room for misconduct, Vancouver gave a late seven-minute, two-man advantage to the Ducks, who scored twice to wrap up the highest-scoring performance in the franchises two-decade history. "What happened at the end, I havent really seen before," said Selanne, who scored his 682nd career goal during the two-man advantage. "It was kind of weird. You dont want to finish the game like that ... but this is still a confidence boost for us. Theyre a great team." Andrew Cogliano, Jakob Silfverberg and Sami Vatanen also scored, and Frederik Andersen made 31 saves as Anaheim joined the 1967-68 Montreal Canadiens as the only teams in league history to win 18 times in a 19-game span. Vatanens score with 38 seconds left pushed the Ducks past the club-record eight goals, accomplished twice previously. Captain Ryan Getzlaf, rookie Hampus Lindholm and Vatanen had two assists apiece while Anaheim scored six power-play goals -- one fewer than in their previous 15 games combined. "We just want to keep good habits and keep things fresh," Cogliano said. "Obviously it got a little out of hand, and thats unfortunate. Ive been on the other side of that, and its not something thats fun." The Ducks also improved to 20-0-2 at Honda Center, matching San Joses 2008-09 start for the longest home points streak to open a season in the last 34 years. Zack Kassian scored for the Canucks in their seventh loss in eight games. Eddie Lack gave up three goals on 13 shots before getting chased early in the second period, and backup Joacim Eriksson was relentlessly battered in his NHL debut. "It got away from us," Vancouver captain Henrik Sedin said. "Ive had a lot of disappointing losses. This was up there, but this was not a 9-1 game. This was not a 6-1 game. They had eight or nine minutes of 5-on-3. Theyre going to score when they get that." Anaheim led 6-0 late in the second period, and the blowout got even uglier after the Ducks went up 7-1 in the third on Perrys 27th goal. Vancouvers Tom Sestito, Jannik Hansen and Kassian all got misconduct penalties with 7:11 to play, and Kevin Bieksa was sent to the showers moments later. "Im not even going to try to explain it," Vancouver coach John Tortorella said. "One of those nights, so we plow along to our next game and get ready to play. ... It does me no good, it does the players no good, to discuss anything that happened here." Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau, who has seen countless minor-league shenanigans during a long hockey career, wasnt overly upset with the Canucks bush-league behaviour. "There was a lot of frustration on their part," Boudreau said. "They just started punching our guys. It wasnt the brightest thing to do. What are the refs supposed to do? ... It was just an unfortunate game for Vancouver. Im sure their next opponent is going to pay for that." With just one loss since Dec. 3, Anaheim has opened a six-point lead atop the NHL standings on the defending Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks, who will host the Ducks on Friday night. The Ducks would have to beat Chicago and St. Louis in back-to-back road games this weekend to match the 1967-68 Canadiens, who won 20 of 21. NOTES: Andersen filled in capably for Jonas Hiller, who sat out with an illness. Hiller has won 14 straight games, the second-longest winning streak by a goalie in NHL history. ... The 23-year-old Eriksson, in his first North American season, is filling in for Roberto Luongo, who has been out since Jan. 4. ... CINCINNATI - Closer Aroldis Chapman agreed to a $5 million, one-year contract Tuesday, leaving the Cincinnati Reds with only starting pitcher Homer Bailey left in arbitration. Chapman and the Reds split the difference on their arbitration figures. The club had offered $4.6 million while Chapman asked for $5.4 million. The Reds were far apart with Bailey, who asked for $11.6 million and was offered $8.7 million. If they cant reach a deal, a hearing would be held next month. Bailey went 11-12 last season with a 3.49 ERA and a club-high 199 strikeouts. He also pitched his second no-hitter in two years. Thats because the Toronto native will once again follow Japanese dynamo Yuzuru Hanyu, who leads after the short program in Sochi. The 23-year-old Canadian will skate fourth, immediately follow Hanyu. In the short program, Chan competed two skaters after his 19-year-old rival. Chan will skate to The Four Seasons by Vivaldi in the hopes of making up a deficit of 3.93 points. Javier Fernandez of Spain, currently sitting in third place, will be the first skater to hit the ice in the final group of six. Like Hanyu, Fernandez is coached by Canadian Brian Orser, the 1988 Olympic silver medallist. Fernandez is followed by Daisuke Takahashi. The former world champion and 22010 Olympic bronze medallist from Japan is in fourth place.dddddddddddd The random draw in the Olympic setup has resulted in the regrettable result that the fifth- and sixth-place skaters end the show. While they have a chance at reaching the podium, its highly unlikely they could make up enough ground to win the competition. Many figure skating observers believed veteran Brian Joubert should have been in the final grouping on the basis of a strong short program, but the Frenchman will instead be near the beginning of the penultimate group. Kevin Reynolds of Coquitlam, B.C. will be up 12th in the free skate, which gets underway at 10 a.m. ET. Lupul for the Leafs goal.

Melbourne, Australia (SportsNetwork.com) - Maria Sharapova dominated Eugenie Bouchard to reach her third Australian Open semifinal in four years, while Ekaterina Makarova had a similarly easy time ousting third-seeded Simona Halep during Tuesdays quarterfinal action at the years first Grand Slam event. The second-seeded former world No. 1 Sharapova, the 2008 Aussie champ and a two-time runner-up, needed just 77 minutes to down the seventh-seeded 2014 Wimbledon finalist Bouchard by a 6-3, 6-2 score. I felt pretty good from the start, said Sharapova. I thought I had a really good start. I kept my focus throughout the whole match. I didnt feel that I had too many letdowns, which is important. When I did have a few slips I was able to come out with great first serves or really powerful returns. But overall really happy with the way the match went. Makarova, meanwhile, landed in her second career Grand slam semi by overpowering a mistake-prone Halep, the worlds third-ranked player and a finalist at last years French Open. The Romanian star committed 31 unforced errors and double-faulted four times in dropping a 6-4, 6-0 decision to the 10th-seeded Russian left-hander. I had a bad day, said Halep. But she played well and everything was in for her. Im really sad a little bit now that I could not play my tennis, my game, but thats tennis and I have to look forward to the next tournament. Makarova, meanwhile, will play in her second straight Grand Slam semifinal. She dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Serena Williams in last years U.S. Open semis. Maybe Ive brought all the atmosphere and memories here from New York, said Makarova. Im really enjoying myself. Its a really nice time for me. Sharapova, who will face Makarova in Thursdays semifinals, hasnt dropped a set since escaping with a 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 win over qualifier Alexandra Panova in the second round. The five-time Grand Slam champion credited a phone call from her father for helping turn things around. I dont want to face that phone call with my father too many times during a tournament, she said. He told me that I was working much harder than I had to. If I was maybe a little bit smarter, did a few things maybe a little bit differently, maybe it could have been easier. Its been pretty easy for Sharapova against her fellow Russian Makarova. Makarova hasnt beaten Sharapova in five all-time meetings, dropping the last four in straight sets. The two met twice previously at the Australian Open, with Sharapova taking quarterfinal matchups in 2012 and 2013. Well, Ive never beaten her, so it will be tough, said Makarova about again facing Sharapova. Definitely shes a great fighter. Like here in the second round, she almost lost, but she turned (it) around. The Williams sisters will each take part in Wednesdays two quarterfinal matches, with top-seeded Serena continuing her quest for a sixth career title in Melbourne by taking on No. 11 seed and last years Aussie runner-up Dominika Cibulkova. The 18th-seeded former top-ranked star Venus will square off against 19-year-old fellow American Madison Keys. Serena is 4-0 lifetime against Cibulkova, while Venus is 1-0 versus her compatriot Keys. The reigning U.S. Open champion Serena owns 18 Grand Slam singles titles, including five here in Melbourne. Venus, a seven-time major champion and 2003 Aussie runner-up to Serena, is a perfect 9-0 this year, including a title in Auckland three weeks ago. Falcons Jerseys . Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Hi Kerry, I looked for a comment online from you on the Nazem Kadri hit on Cody Ceci on Saturday night from the Sens/Leafs game, but didnt find one! I have always respected your on-ice decision skills, so I would like your opinion regarding this hit. Was this a case of the player turning his back when he was going to be hit or did Kadri hit a player in a vulnerable position? Thanks,Randy Eades Hi Randy: I did post a late comment @kfraserthecall on Twitter that you must have missed. Sorry it was late but I was engaged in Twitter combat (and being duly vilified) by Canadiens fans over the Brendan Gallagher episode against the Jets! With regard to your question, Cody Ceci was positioned facing the end boards in order to retrieve the puck after it was turned back from the corner by teammate Jared Cowen and as he was being pressured on the forecheck by Nikolai Kulemin of the Leafs. Ceci didnt intentionally turn his body at the last second to set himself up for a hit by Nazem Kadri. That had no bearing on why a penalty call did not result. Instead, Ceci was facing square to the end boards waiting for the puck to arrive on his stick just as Kadri angled from the front of the net and delivered a body check that should have resulted in a boarding minor penalty. The initial point of contact delivered by Kadri was to the left hip of Ceci and not on the numbers. The finishing upward push exerted by Nazem Kadri caused the Ottawa player to tumble forward into the boards. Let me explain for Senators coach Paul McLean and the Ottawa fans why the call was missed by the referees. When you re-examine the video clossely, you will see that referee Paul Devorski, working past his 1,500th game, pivoted out from the corner toward the end faceoff circle in order to vacate the space that Jared Cowen and Nikolai Kulemin would occupy in pursuit of the puck.dddddddddddd The referee then rotated his body 360 degrees in a drift back below the goal line but retained visual focus on both Cowen and Kulemin with a fixed glance over his shoulder well after Cowen dished the puck back toward Ceci. It is clearly evident from the footage that referee Devorski did not turn his head and visual focus toward the action near the net until after Kadri had delivered the illegal hit on Ceci. All the referee witnessed at this point was Ceci down on the ice and Kadri in possession of the puck just prior to a tape-to-tape pass out front to Joffrey Lupul for the Leafs goal. I am positive that referee Devorski would have deemed the hit by Kadri to be worthy of a boarding minor infraction if he had been focused on and witnessed the contact. Since the hit happened directly behind the net the back referee would have at best, an obstructed view if he was looking in that direction. His primary responsibility and area of coverage however was on the action away from the puck; which at that point would have included Cowen and Kulemin in the corner. While we do not see the back referee in the footage, it is conceivable that both refs failed to transition their area of focus once the puck was thrown back behind the net by Cowen. If that were the case, both refs maintained visual focus on the two players in the corner and did not observe the Kadri boarding on Ceci. I hate to be bearer of bad news coach Paul, but that is how the boarding penalty to Kadri was missed and resulted in the Leafs goal that tied the game at two! If Martin Brodeur had his pick on Canadas No. 1 goalie for the Sochi Olympics, it would be Roberto Luongo. The future Hall of Famer told TSNs sister station in Quebec RDS on Monday that while Luongo and Montreal Canadiens netminder Carey Price have been the countrys top two candidates, the Vancouver Canucks goaltender should get the edge for the starting job. "(Price) and Roberto Luongo are the two strongest candidates since the beginning of the year," Brodeur told RDS after the Devils 3-2 loss to Montreal. "In my book, the No. 1 goaltending spot belongs to Roberto Luongo. "The job is his and he cant lose it as I did in 2010 in Vancouver. Price must be patient, try to have the best season possible and the chance to take part in Sochi will be a very good experience for him." Luongo, Brodeurs goaltending partner at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, backstopped Canada to four straight victories against Germany, Russia, Slovakia and the United States en route to a gold medal on home ice. In 24 games this season, Luongo has an 11-8-5 record with a 2.41 goals-against average and .911 save percentage with two shutouts. Price is 12-8-2 in 22 games played this season with a 2.00 goals-against average and .937 save percentage. New England Patriots Jerseys . The head coach of the Canadas womens soccer team learned more about his players Sunday, and for long stretches, he didnt like what he saw. The Canadians were sloppy and plodding for long periods while also failing to capitalize on their numerous scoring chances in settling for a 0-0 draw with Mexico in an international friendly. Ranked seventh in the world, Canada won the bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics and is the host country of the 2015 FIFA Womens World Cup. Mexico, meanwhile, is in rebuild mode and sits 24th in the FIFA rankings. "You expect to beat Mexico, no disrespect," said Herdman. "(Canada) is the seventh-ranked team in the world, bronze medallists. I still think were three or four players (away from being) that team again. Hopefully we can either find those players or get those players back. "I think the Mexicans were worth the score today. They werent miles away from Canada." Herdman was especially displeased with the tail end of the opening 45 minutes. "We just ran out of ideas. That first half, I felt sorry for people watching at home or in the stands. It just wasnt an inspirational or exciting performance," he said. "I think the players knew at halftime that people had paid some money to watch them play, given their Sundays up, and they had to give a bit more. "Its almost like we thought this was going to be easy for some reason." The fact that Mexico wasnt far off will be troubling for Herdman, who has been experimenting with new tactics while giving younger players a chance to show they belong. Some failed to impress. "I just know how much that shirt is worth to people," said Herdman. "If you get a chance to play in front of 20,000 people ... I just expect players to give everything theyve physically got, mentally got. "If youre going to play for Canada, you better be bloody good ... and be good every game." One of the players who caught Herdmans eye was 16-year-old defender Sura Yekka, who won her second cap. "She brought a real bright spot," he said. "If anything, she pretty much showed the way in terms of a positive attitude to really take it to Mexico and I think a couple players fed off her energy." Herdman has brought Kara Lang back into the fold after she retired nearly three years ago because of two serious knee injuries. While the 27-year-old is still a long way off from seeing game action, its clear that outside of captain Christine Sinclair, Canada is still starving for goals. "It tells you a bit of a story of what we need to add too this team," said Herdman of the 0-0 scoreline.dddddddddddd Canada had a chance to grab the lead in the 48th minute, but Sophie Schmidt sliced a cross from Brittany Baxter over the Mexican goal. Kaylyn Kyle then had a golden opportunity in alone in the 53rd, only to have Mexican goalkeeper Cecilia Santiago make a save before stopping Emily Zurrers effort on the ensuing corner. Santiago came up huge for her team again on Sinclair in the 78th minute before a Mexican defender blocked Lauren Sesselmanns rebound chance. Santiago had Sinclairs number once more in the 87th, stopping her effort with a diving save as Canada failed to find the elusive goal. "It was a big challenge to come here and close the year with a good performance," said Mexican head coach Leonardo Cuellar. "Obviously were still far away from where we would like to be." Sundays crowd was vocal, with pockets of Mexican supporters scattered across B.C. Place Stadium, which will be the site of the final in 2015. Coming off a drab 3-0 victory over South Korea in Edmonton last month, Canada had some early chances before goalkeeper Erin McLeod was forced to make a sprawling save in the 10th minute off Mexicos Guadalupe Worbis. Baxter, formerly Britanny Timko prior to her marriage this summer, put the ball in the back of the Mexican goal behind Santiago in the 13th minute, but she was ruled offside. McLeod had to be sharp again in the 15th when Worbis, far and away Mexicos most dangerous threat in the first half, stepped around a Canadian defender and fired another shot on target. Sinclair then rounded the Mexican keeper a minute later, but couldnt get her shot past an on-rushing defender. Wilkinson limped off in the 28th minute and made way for Yekka, whose energy down the right side gave Canada some life. Mexico had a dangerous cross in the 29th minute, but Zurrer did well to head the ball behind for a corner that Canada would deal with to end the threat. Despite Sundays performance, Herdman has 18 months until the start of the World Cup to figure out his best lineup and formation. "Today told us about players. Thats what the game constantly does," he said. "Every time we play its a story. You read into that what you want." Notes: Sundays game marked Canadas first in Vancouver since a 3-1 victory over Mexico in the CONCACAF qualifying tournament that secured a spot at the 2012 London Olympics. The Canadians would eventually go on to win bronze following a memorable extra-time loss to the United States in the semifinals. ... MIAMI -- Jordan Pacheco and the Colorado Rockies finally broke out the bats. Pacheco had three hits and drove in a run for the Rockies, who beat the Miami Marlins 6-5 on Wednesday night. Charlie Blackmon and Michael Cuddyer each had two hits for Colorado as all eight position players in the starting lineup recorded at least one hit. "I think we were saving them," Pacheco said of the hits. "We faced two tough guys (Jose Fernandez and Nathan Eovaldi) at the beginning of the series and its bound to happen with this lineup. We have a bunch of guys who can hit." Rockies two-time All-Star outfielder Carlos Gonzalez left the game in the bottom of the sixth inning as a precaution due to dizziness, which began during the game without a particular incident. "Hes OK, he wasnt feeling too good and was a little dizzy," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "I think hes fine, but he wasnt feeling too good." Giancarlo Stanton homered and drove in two three for the Marlins, who trailed 6-1 in the sixth. "Thats the difference from last year," Stanton said. "That happened frequently, a sense of looking to tomorrow, we already lost. Its good to keep going every game to the last out." The Marlins trailed 6-4 in the bottom of the ninth with LaTroy Hawkins on the mound. Hawkins allowed a leadoff single to Adeiny Hechavarria and walked Derek Dietrich with two outs bringing Stanton to the plate. "You never want to see him walking to the plate to win the game, hes a dangerous hitter, its well-documented," Weiss said. "It was very uncomfortable with Stanton at the plate." Stanton nearly ended the game when he hit a long foul ball down the left field line, which would have won the game if it had stayed fair. "(The pitch) was in so I wasnt worried that it was going to be fair," Pacheco said. "Ive heard that sound before, I heard it a couple innings prior to that, but it worked out for us." Stanton said: "I should have got it a little deeper. It landed a lot further (foul) than when it went past the pole. It was pretty close." Two pitches later Stanton delivered an RBI single on a full-count pitch scoring Hechavarria and pulling Miami within a run. Garrett Jones popped out to third base to end the game with Hawkins earning the save. "Hawk grinded through the inning and got it done," Weiss said. Jordan Lyles (1-0) won his debut with the Rockies after being acquired in an off-season trade with the Houston Astros for Dexter Fowler. Lyles allowed four runs and five hits in five innings while striking out five and walking one. "It was stressful, Hawk got his work in tonight, but our first win maybe we can get it going tomorrow and have a good homestand," Lyles said. "Hopefully were heading in the right direction and put those first two games behind us." Colorado led 6-1 heading into the sixth inning before Stanton cut the deficit to 6-3 with a two-run home run to right field off Lyles. "Everyone knows not to go away, I wanted to show him away one time and I shouldnt have," Lyles said. "Hes a strong guy." Reliever Adam Ottovinos wild pitch brought Miami 6-4 later in the sixth. Henderson Alvarez (0-1) pitched a no-hitter on the final day of the 2013 season against the Detroit Tigers, but struggled in his 2014 debut. Alvarez allowed five consecutive hits in the first inning including a RBI double by Gonzalez and run-scoring singles by Justin Morneau and Pacheco giving the Rockies a 3-0 lead. The Rockies stretched their lead to 6-1 in the fourth sparked by two errors and a wild pitch by Alvarez, which scored a run. Kevin Slowey relieved Alvarez and immediately walked in a run. Cuddyer also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. "We gave them some extra outs and that probably was the difference in the game," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. Alvarez allowed six runs -- three earned -- and seven hits in three innings. "What got me in trouble was leaving the ball up," Alvarez said. Slowey struck out five in four scoreless innings. NOTES: Gold Glove Award winner Nolan Arenado flashed his ability at third base in the fifth inning when he barehanded a slow-roller and threw out Hechavarria at first base. . Dominguez homered twice and had four RBIs, helping the Astros to defeat the Chicago White Sox 8-2. Dominguez hit his sixth and seventh homers of the season off White Sox lefty John Danks (3-4) in the third and fifth innings. The first was hit to deep left-centre on a full count that followed a double by Dexter Fowler. The second was hit to the left-field Crawford Boxes, also with Fowler on base, putting the Astros up 8-1. "Hes a guy that can turn around anybodys fastball," Astros manager Bo Porter said of Dominguez. "Hes got power to all fields." Backed by early run support, Astros right-hander Brad Peacock (1-4) earned his first win of the season, allowing two runs and five hits and four walks, while striking out five in 6 2-3 innings. The Astros scored two runs or fewer in six of Peacocks previous nine outings entering Sunday. Since Peacock became a starter on April 20, the offence provided 13 runs of support in his previous five starts. "Our hitters came out swinging," Peacock said. "Its a big confidence builder for them and a big confidence builder for us." The Astros have won four of their past five games, while the White Sox have lost six of eight. After taking two of three from the Rangers and White Sox, Houston has won back-to-back series for the first time since last August. The Astros improved to 12-3 when hitting two or more home runs. They are 1-17 when they fail to hit a homer. After a Chris Carter homer in the second inning gave the Astros an early lead, Jonathan Villar sparked a rally with a two-RBI single that scored Jesus Guzman and L.J. Hoes. Guzman advanced to second on a throwing error by left fielder Alejandro De Aza theen stole third and scored when catcher Adrian Nietos attempt to throw him out skipped into the outfield.dddddddddddd The Astros had 10 hits in the game and have had at least nine hits in eight straight games, the clubs longest such streak since 2008. "They were swinging it good," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. "Any time you get the ball up, especially in this ballpark, youre going to create a lot of problems." Villar later left the game in the seventh inning with a right hand injury, but Porter said the injury was not serious. The White Sox were playing without first baseman Jose Abreu, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with ankle tendinitis. "Everything gets frustrating, especially when you have games like this," Ventura said of Chicagos two errors. "It just needs to be cleaned up." Danks allowed eight runs -- seven earned -- and 10 hits and three walks while striking out seven in 4 2-3 innings. He allowed at least one homer for his fourth consecutive start and fell to 1-3 in that stretch after allowing just one homer through five starts in April, when he was 2-1. "I did a terrible job of keeping the ball in the ballpark," Danks said. Notes: Despite having the worst record in the AL at 16-28, the Astros are 15-11 when hitting home runs. The Astros rank third in the majors and second in the AL with 15 multi-homer games. ... Dexter Fowler has walked in eight straight games, Houstons longest streak since 2006. ... e went in to the course that Sunday mornin

NEW YORK -- Alex Rodriguezs lawyers updated his lawsuit against Major League Baseball and Bud Selig, adding new criticism of the commissioner for not testifying in the unions grievance to overturn the 211-game suspension given to the New York Yankees star last summer. The lawyers filed a 33-page amended complaint Tuesday in federal court in Manhattan, expanding on the suit originally filed Oct. 3 in New York Supreme Court. Arbitrator Fredric Horowitz last week refused to compel Selig to testify in the grievance, and Rodriguez then walked out of the hearing without testifying. The sides rested last Thursday after 12 days of sessions, and a decision on whether to uphold or alter the discipline is expected in January. "Mr. Selig chose to hide in his office in Milwaukee rather than come testify at the grievance hearing in New York. In Mr. Seligs world, apparently the buck does not stop with Bud," the new complaint said. "Mr. Selig lacked the courage of his convictions to explain under oath the reasons for the suspension and the conduct of his investigators. His silence on these issues speaks volumes and leads to only one logical conclusion -- his actions, and those of the MLB personnel he controls, were aimed at destroying the reputation, career and business prospects of Alex Rodriguez." Rodriguez was suspended Aug. 5 for alleged violations of the sports drug agreement and labour contract, and he played pending a determination of the grievance. As he did in the original complaint, Rodriguez accused Selig of conducting a "witch hunt" against him. The three-time AL MVP criticized the methods MLB employed in its investigation of the Biogenesis of America anti-aging clinic, accused of distributing banned performance-enhancing drugs. A-Rods lawyers included a photograph of Selig posing with a fan wearing a red shirt that had "A-ROID" written across the front. While the lawsuit attributes the photo to NESN.com, the NESNs website says the photo was from the 2009 All-Star FanFest and was taken from NBCSportsRadios Twitter feed. "Sadly, this cowardly stance by Mr. Selig is consistent with his past and highly inappropriate conduct in posing, smilingly, with a young fan wearing a T-shirt with a derogatory message directed at Mr. Rodriguez," the amended lawsuit said. "One cannot imagine the Commissioner of any other professional sport -- or indeed the CEO of any business -- doing something similar with respect to one of his or her players or employees." MLB had the suit removed to federal court, and Rodriguezs lawyers are trying to persuade U.S. District Judge Lorna G. Schofield to remand the case back to New York state court. A hearing is scheduled for Jan. 23. Rodriguez claimed Selig interfered with his existing contracts and prospective business relationships. MLB says the case should be heard in federal court because of provisions of the Labor Management Relations Act, known as Taft-Hartley, and intends to ask for the suit to be dismissed. Later Tuesday, Rodriguezs lawyers released a stack of documents, including a presentation dated Oct. 21. They called a news conference for that evening with the intent to release papers, only to be blocked by an order from Horowitz. The presentation criticizes the conduct of several MLB investigators and New York City Police. The lawyers also released statements of several people who were on Rodriguezs witness list but never testified at the grievance hearing. Marcelo Albir and Lazaro Collazo accused MLBs investigators of harassment, which the league denies. Gary L. Jones, who says he was a friend of Porter Fischer, said he was paid $125,000 in $100 bills by MLB Senior Vice-President Dan Mullin at the Cosmos Diner in Pompano Beach, Fla., last March and $25,000 by Mullin in $50s and $100s for additional documents the following month. He also states Jones told Mullin that the documents had been stolen. MLB says the first payment was $100,000 and denies the comments Jones attributed to Mullin. Robert Davis Miller alleged Biogenesis founder Anthony Bosch told him he was being paid $5 million by MLB in monthly installments, which the league also denies. We view the importance of this subject matter, given the terrible tragedy that we all faced, that we had to maybe step up our efforts in this area and provide a more focused area of support, OHL commissioner David Branch said Monday as he launched the Talk Today program. No question, the tragedy of Terrys death only served to say we must move forward and provide greater support in educating our players and everyone else involved about the signs of suicide and how we can help make a difference. As part of the program, each of the OHLs 20 teams will be assigned a mental health coach who will be available for players, coaches, parents, billets and other members of the organization to talk to. Other aspects include training on recognizing signs of suicide and depression and appointing mental health champions who can talk to the public about the leagues efforts. Trafford, 20, was sent home from the Spirit in March for violating team rules. His body was discovered in his SUV in a parking lot in Saginaw Township, Mich., and an autopsy determined he died of self-inflicted asphyxiation. Branch said he would turn back the clock if he could to change the outcome of the tragedy. Unable to do that, its the OHLs hope that Talk Today can at least raise more awareness. Mental illness directly or indirectly affects all of us, said Branch. For the OHL this was certainly highlighted to us earlier this year with the death by suicide of Terry Trafford. He left a mark on all of us. We hope that by providing all players and team support staff with education on mental health, we will be able to help identify those who are struggling and furthermore help reduce the stigmas attached to mental health issues. Canadian Mental Health Association CEO Camille Quenneville said suicide is the second-leading cause of death in young Canadians behind accidents and is responsible for a quarter of deaths among 18-to-24-year-olds nationwide. She added that 3.2 million teenagers from the ages of 12 to 19 are at risk of developing depression. We have to changee this reality, said Quenneville, who is a cousin of Joel, the head coach of the Chicago Blackhawks.dddddddddddd In partnering with the OHL, were working to provide tools that will create a mentally healthy league. The road to Tuesdays announcement began shortly after Traffords death when the Peterborough Petes took part in a pilot program by having players attend a three-hour seminar to learn about and discuss mental health. Petes vice-president Dave Pogue, whose son Mitchell killed himself in August 2013, wasnt sure how his players would react. I was concerned when we went in to the course that Sunday morning, Pogue sad. The clocks were turned back, the boys lost an hour of sleep, two of the players turned 19 the night before and we had a big win and it was their first day off in three weeks. We were inviting them in on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in March to sit down for three hours and talk about mental health and suicide. ... I was quite amazed at how engaging they were in the course. Every one of them to a man took it very, very seriously. Pogue said the team only Monday learned that a player who took the course recently noticed troubling signs in a classmate at school, told a teacher and may have saved a life. The player reached out despite not knowing the other student, who Pogue said is now getting help. In addition to the Petes project, a focus group of over-age players in June came away with a recommendation that the OHL expand its support for mental health issues. Quenneville said mental health coaches have already been in touch with teams. Fully aware of the concern of trying to get through to teenagers, Branch is hopeful that players will be receptive to the program. I think young people, maybe more than some generations, understand the importance of not being afraid to talk about such things as mental health, Branch said. Its not foolproof in terms of them responding the way you would ideally like them to maybe in a time of need, but I think its a huge step and will prove to be a great safety net for many. One hurdle, Branch said, is to make players understand that its not a sign of weakness to come forward. We have to encourage that, he said. Weve got to get rid of some of that macho, win-at-all-costs attitude. Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Kerry, Just watched the shootout in the Coyotes/Leafs game and I have to ask, why was the James van Riemsdyk goal allowed to count? All of the video replays we were shown on TV were inconclusive about whether the puck had entirely crossed the line or not. Neither ref made an attempt at blowing the whistle or pointing at the net and no call was made on the play as it was sent right to the video replay judges. Only after the replay was reviewed was the goal allowed to count. Paul Devorski told Coyotes coach Dave Tippett that he was sure it was a goal. If Devorski was so confident it was a goal then why didnt he signal a goal and blow the whistle? Why did he send it to the video replay? Their indecision and explanation do not seem to match up. Your insight would be greatly appreciated as it appears the Leafs were the recipients of the proverbial home ice advantage! Thanks,Chad Conner in Phoenix Chad, After witnessing JVRs ultimate shootout goal, neither referees (Rob Martell and Paul Devorski) signaled a goal nor did they make a waive off. Understandably, they appeared uncertain and indecisive as they searched to find the puck from underneath Smiths pads. The puck did not become visible until Smith wisely and carefully manipulated his pads from inside the net and kicked his feet forward until the puck appeared well out in the middle of his goal crease. Since no signal was made by either referee as required, I must assume they did not and could not see the puck across the goal line. As such, they were unable and unwilling to make an initial call. The only alternative for Martell and Devorski at this point was to pass the decision upstairs to video review which has become the safety net for the official. Video review rendered an inconclusive verdict since no camera angle was available to clearly demonstrate the puck crossing the goal line due to the obstructed view from Smiths pads! The call then reverted back to the referee(s) on the ice for a final decision. Referee Rob Martell was on the head set throughout the video review process. The referee was either provided with input and assistance from upstairs and/or Martell used common sense and logic to deduce that since the puck was under Mike Smiths padss and Smiths pads were across the goal line a legal goal should be counted.dddddddddddd I agree with the referees ultimate decision in that it is most logical and probable that the puck completely crossed the goal line. I have personally stood on the goal line and signaled a goal when the puck was caught by the goalkeeper with his glove across the line and then pulled his glove and the puck forward out of the net. The puck was in the glove and the glove was across the goal line and inside the net. I also counted goals when the goalkeeper carried the puck across the line and into the net. I made these decisions immediately and without hesitation. There was no video review to act as a safety net. Even when the review process was implemented I wanted to see the play and make the call. - This very late decision by the on-ice referee Thursday night following video review highlights at least two flaws in the current system. The first is that two different standards can be applied in determining goals. Video review must clearly see the puck across the goal line with an unobstructed view before they will verify a goal. The evidence must be unequivocal! If this cant be achieved video review personnel render an inconclusive verdict even in cases where it appears logical that the puck would have crossed the line. - The referee, on the other hand, as we saw demonstrate on this call, allowed a goal to stand by applying logic, common sense and the power of deduction to determine that in his judgment the puck had crossed the goal line. My recommendation is to provide the referee with the authority to review controversial goals at ice level (including goalkeeper interference) and have the final authority and judgment in these matters. The optics on JVRs ultimate goal determination looked ridiculous! Referee Martell (and Devorski) did not make a decision on the play in real time. Martell then spent several minutes communicating through a head set and staring into space. Following the inconclusive review verdict, Referee Martell was forced to render a final decision - one that he was unable or unwilling to make in real time! The Refs are supposed to make a call one way or the other in real time; let them also make the final decision through the video review process, As Referee Rob Martell demonstrated Thursday night, thats in their job description and what they get paid to do! Murray beat Sam Querrey 7-6 (5), 6-7 (3), 6-1, 6-3 to clinch Britains opening-round victory against the United States on Sunday at Petco Park. "Im proud of the way Im playing just now, because I had to do a lot of work to get back to where I want to be," Murray said after celebrating with his teammates on the red clay court in a temporary stadium in left field of the downtown home of baseballs San Diego Padres. "Im still not quite there yet," said Murray, who beat Donald Young in straight sets on Friday. "Winning matches of that length and quality so soon after the surgery is good. And changing surfaces and stuff. Ive done 13 weeks consecutively without a break of training and playing tournaments to try and get myself back. I need a break now to take some days off after I get back home. I deserve it." Murray won his 18th straight Davis Cup singles match and Britain beat the Americans for the first time since 1935. Britain advanced to the World Group quarterfinals for the first time since 1986. It will face Italy, which defeated Argentina. The United States is relegated to the World Group playoff in September and will need to win to stay in the World Group. The last time Great Britain won in the United States was in 1903 in the World Group Challenge Final at the Longwood Cricket Club in Boston. American captain Jim Courier was asked to put that in perspective. "It feels great to be alive in 2014," Courier said. "We certainly dont feel a lot of kinship to the last team that lost to the Brits on American soil since theyve been dead a long time. It has nothing to do with us. We come to play on our own terms." Murray split tiebreakers with Querrey in the first two sets, breezed through the third set in 29 minutes and won the match when Querrey returned a serve long. Murray leaned back and pumped both fists, and then swatted the ball into the stands on the opposite end of the court before joining his teammates in a celebration huddle. Later, he had a hot bath, an ice bath andd other treatment on his back.dddddddddddd Britain clinched the match at 3-1. The fourth singles match was cancelled. Murray reached matched point on Querreys serve in the eighth game of the fourth set before the American won three straight points to stay alive. After falling behind 15-30 in the ninth game, Murray got a new racket. He then double-faulted, giving Querrey break point. Murray won the next three points to clinch the match. In the first-set tiebreaker, Murray was down a mini-break before rallying to win when Querrey hit a drop volley into the net. "I tried to do a little too much with it," Querrey said "Every now and then you miss an easy one. It happened to be at a big moment." Querrey won the second-set tiebreaker on a forehand passing shot and then jumped for joy. Murray immediately rebounded by breaking Querrey twice to go up 4-0 in the third set. He broke Querrey again to win the set in a seventh game that went to deuce four times, clinching it when Querrey hit into the net. Murray said it was important to win the first set "because I felt like I was playing the better tennis for the most part of it. Then he started playing better at the end of the set. He probably played a better tiebreak than me as well. Just missed a couple of shots, like the volley on set point was a bad one, but he got himself into a great position. "If I had lost that it wouldve been tough after having served for it. Yeah, in these sorts of matches, first set can be crucial." Although Murray struggled on clay last year, he said he was surprised the Americans chose that surface for this match. He said the clay might have affected Querrey in his five-set loss to James Ward on Friday. "When we got here the court was pretty slippery and tough to move on," Murray said. "I would say for myself, one of my strengths is my movement on the court. I didnt know if that was something they had done intentionally or just the nature of putting down a temporary clay court. "Obviously it did have a bearing in the tie, you know, for Sam especially. I think his best surface is hard courts. He will have had all his best results on hard courts." headed into their final group

Steve Mason unzipped the bag and inside found zombie heads with mouths agape staring right back at him through whitewashed eyes.Mason removed his newly painted goalie helmet, the latest piece of art for his collection, and pinpointed Philadelphia Flyers teammates who have been transformed into decaying faces and rotting corpses. There was Claude Giroux, with white eyes matching the colour of the captains patch on his jersey. Wayne Simmonds and Jakub Voracek may as well have lumbered straight off the set of Michael Jacksons Thriller video.Beautiful, Mason said, rotating his helmet to eye each ghoulish character.Masons helmet does more than protect his noggin from pucks whipped in his direction on a daily basis. Its a symbol of his love for both ghouls and his teammates, a colorful sign of respect for the guys on the ice who watch his back. The helmet was made by airbrush ace Franny Drummond, one of a very few NHL helmet artists who make the designs come to life. He zombified several Flyers for Masons latest helmet, creating perhaps the most frightening mask this side of Jason Voorhees.I just think it looks cool on a helmet, Mason said. Ever since I was a young goaltender, I always thought the scary-looking helmets were the coolest ones. The 41-year-old Drummond littered his desk with pictures of the Flyers he used as a template for his work. Drummond then picked up his Iwata airbrush loaded with orange clear-coat automotive paint — picked because of its durability, not its $400 a gallon price tag — and held it a pinch away from his sanded white helmet and went to work with a surgeons precession. Its not the most exciting thing, Drummond said, but when its finished it gets exciting. You have to wait for it to all come together.Drummond creates the kind of helmet art that had one collector paying $4,000 for a one-of-a-kind Winter Classic-themed piece. He has created masks for NHL goalies including Bostons Tuukka Rask, Brian Boucher and Montreal Canadiens prospect Mike Condon. Condons helmet has state troopers painted on one side in honour of his father and Band of Brothers on the other for his favourite TV show. Canadiens and Princeton logos are both on helmet, as well as Condons family crest.Drummond, a former goalie who still plays in adult hockey leagues, had his art displayed in the NHL equivalent of the Louvre when Boucher and Michael Leighton both wore his helmets in the 2010 Stanley Cup playoffs. He has built a business by airbrushing just about any type of object, from a bus for a radio host to motorcycles, welders masks and walls. He worked for a time on the show Extreme Makeover, and recalled frantically putting the finishing touches on bedrooms while host Ty Pennington yelled Move that bus! as the show neared its finale.Drummond studied at Miami International University of Art & Design and custom painted in his PaintZoo shop for 18 years.Hes a Flyers fanatic, and became involved with the organization when he created artwork for a former Flyer for a charity event. He was introduced to Flyers equipment manager Derek Settlemyre and that led to his first helmet for Ray Emery in the 2010 Winter Classic. The mask was decorated as a tribute to former team goalies Ron Hextall, Bernie Parent and Pelle Lindbergh.Boucher liked what he saw and became his next client. Drummonds work soon caught the attention of Bauer, one of the leading hockey equipment manufacturers. Drummond signed with Bauer and became a certified painter for the NHL helmet kings. The helmets range from $400 a mask for youth hockey players up to about $2,000 for the adult versions.Drummond is one of seven artists used by Bauer, most notably Swedish artist Dave Gunnarsson, who paints about 65 per cent of NHL helmets.Whenever theres a third party involved, weve learned the process gets ruined a little bit, said Lee Britt, custom goalie manager at Bauer. Weve learned over time its best for the player and artist figure out what the design is going to be. Sometimes the teams will have a little bit of input.Drummonds masterpieces occasionally go bust. He worked for about 10 days on Ilya Bryzgalovs helmet for the 2012 Winter Classic, only for the Flyers goalie to get benched for the big game. And he sent Star Wars nerds into a frenzy when he painted Yodas lightsaber Flyers orange instead of green.Drummond has been Masons personal artist for two years.Id put his work up against anyone elses in the world, Mason said. Ive seen a lot of goaltenders masks through the years, and seeing his up close and personal, the amount of detail he puts in there, its second to none.Mason was razzed last season when his helmet failed to include any defencemen. Nicklas Grossmann and Luke Schenn made the cut this week and so did some members of the teams equipment staff. He had asked for the new helmet to change his mojo after an 0-4-1 start to the season, and he also needed a darker cage because the brightness of the new state-of-the-art lighting system at Philadelphias Wells Fargo Center has made it tougher to see the puck during a game. The helmet wasnt unveiled until Monday. Mason broke in the helmet at practice and it made its NHL debut Tuesday night against Edmonton. Mason made 35 saves to earn his first win of the season as Philadelphia beat the Oilers 4-1.Mason uses two to three masks per season and keeps a shrine of them, a timeline of his career that is capped by Drummonds glittering pieces. These are more than helmets, Drummond said, theyre keepsakes. The clubs final group stage match in the CONCACAF Champions League on Wednesday night will come against a New York Red Bulls team that is already eliminated from contention for the quarter-finals. And the Red Bulls will likely sit out most of their best players to save them for a Major League Soccer match on Sunday that has playoff implications. It is a glittering chance for the Impact to finish the group stage with a perfect 4-0-0 record and perhaps earn one of the top four seeds for the quarter-finals. But coach Frank Klopas cautioned this week that the Impact cant expect to walk into Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J., and take the three points without any effort, even if New York opts to use mostly reserve players. The game they played here against us (a 1-0 Montreal win on Sept. 17), they played some guys that are not in their starting group, but theres a lot for all those guys to play for, said Klopas. Its the end of the season, and maybe its an opportunity to impress their coach. They have a lot to prove. Theyre playing for contracts. But regardless of who we play, we have to focus on ourselves. And its another opportunity to get a win on the road. Its not MLS, but it counts. On the downside, the Impact will be without arguably their two best players, as midfielder Ignacio Piatti is nursing tendinitis in a knee and striker Marco Di Vaio has a one-game suspension. Otherwise, they expect to field a strong lineup. The Impact have had a miserable MLS season, sitting last in the Eastern Conference thanks largely to a 0-12-5 record away from home. But they won the Canadian Championship, which put them into the Champions League group stage, where they already have an away win over CD FAS of El Salvador. Montreal clinched a quarter-final spot when the Red Bulls (1-1-1) were held to a draw by CD FAS. And the club has its 3-2 away win in San Salvador on Aug. 20 to build on. Now we can do it again, said midfielder Maxim Tissot. Itll be big for us to get momentum for next year. Weve been playing better. Maybe its because we dont have the stress of trying to make thhe playoffs, but weve been moving the ball better.dddddddddddd The fifth-place Red Bulls have made the MLS playoffs, but a win Sunday in Kansas City can move them into third place and avoid the fourth versus fifth knockout game. Or it could give them home field advantage if they come fourth and have to play the knock-out match against either Kansas City or Columbus. To finish with four wins would give Montreal a chance to play the quarter-final return leg at home. Theoretically, it would also give them a weaker opponent, although all eight teams in the quarter-finals should be tough. Tissot said Montreal hopes to draw a fellow MLS side. The quarter-finals will be played between Feb. 24 and March 5, when MLS teams are still in training camp but clubs from Mexico and Central America will be in mid-season. Id prefer to play a team from MLS, Tissot said. That may not be best for the league, but it may be best for us because well know the team were facing. No matter who we play, we have to be ready. But we want as much on our side as possible. MLS clubs D.C. United and the Portland Timbers are also 3-0-0 headed into their final group stage match. Montreal reached the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 2009. That year, they beat Santos Laguna 2-0 at home before more than 55,000 at Olympic Stadium only to collapse in the second half of a 5-2 defeat in the return leg in Mexico. Now theyve earned another shot. Its big for the club, said Tissot, a Gatineau, Que. native who was playing youth soccer at that time. Well want to get our revenge. We lost in a pretty difficult way. I think (president) Joey Saputo and (general manager) Nick De Santis still remember. (Assistant GM) Matt Jordan played in that game, so he remembers. Well want to win for them especially. The Impact wont be in next years Champions League. That spot has already gone to the Vancouver Whitecaps. A rule change for this year only gives the 2015 CONCACAF spot to the Canadian team that finished highest in MLS standings. Normally, it goes to the club that wins the Canadian Championship trophy, the Voyageurs Cup. ATLANTA -- David Ortiz homered and drove in four runs as the Boston Red Sox ended their 10-game losing streak, rallying from a five-run deficit to defeat the Atlanta Braves 8-6 on Monday. The defending World Series champions trailed 6-1 after the fourth, with starter Clay Buchholz walking a career-high eight in only three-plus innings. But Ortiz tied it by hitting a three-run homer off Ervin Santana in the fifth. With Red Sox fans at Turner Field chanting "Papi! Papi!" the World Series MVP then gave Boston the lead with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly off Ian Thomas (1-2) in the seventh. Following pregame declarations of confidence from manager John Farrell and general manager Ben Cherington, the Red Sox came back to end their worst skid since an 11-game slide in 1994. The losing streak was the longest for a defending World Series champion since the depleted 1998 Marlins had two 11-game skids. Justin Upton drove in three runs with two hits for Atlanta. Edward Mujica (2-1) got the win with a scoreless sixth inning following a 1 1/2-hour rain delay. Chris Johnson singled with one out in the ninth before Koji Uehara capped his 10th save with Andrelton Simmons game-ending double-play grounder. Uehara was Bostons seventh pitcher. Buchholz began the day with an unsightly 6.32 ERA, but even with his poor start he hadnt walked more than three batters in a game. He couldnt overcome unprecedented control problems, as he allowed six runs and four hits. Buchholz was wild from the start. He walked leadoff hitter Jason Heyward and catcher A.J. Pierzynski visited after a first-pitch ball to the next hitter, B.J. Upton. Pitching coach Juan Nieves made his first walk to the mound when Buchholz walked Freddie Freeman. Buchholz matched his season high of three walks in the second inning and added three walks in the Braves three-run third. Justin Upton had a two-run double and Gerald Laird had a run-scoring single off Buchholzs left foot. Buchholz didnt get out of Atlantas three-run fourth. Heyward walked and scored on B.J. Uptons double, and Justin Upton and Simmons added RBI singles. As Bostons early deficit grew, the frustration from its players became more obvious. After his groundout in the fourth, star Dustin Pedroia stalked around the dugout, shouting in anger before slamming his hand on the bench. He seemed to be upset about a ball-strike call earlier in the at-bat. The Red Sox rallied with five runs in the fifth against Santana. Pedroia drove in two runs with a single before Ortiz hit his tying homer to left-centre. It marked the third straight start Santana allowed at least five earned runs. He gave up five runs on six hits and three walks in five innings. Following the rain delay, Thomas walked two batters following an infield hit by Brock Holt, loading the bases. Ortiz drove in Holt with a fly ball to right field, giving Boston a 7-6 lead. Pierzynskis single up the middle pushed the lead to two runs. Heyward led off the eighth with a single to centre field off Andrew Miller but slid past second base trying for a double. He was tagged by Pedroia while reaching back for the bag. NOTES: The crowd was a sellout of 48,501. Most fans remained during the rain delay. ... Buchholz singled in the second inning for his second hit in the majors. ... From the 3,500 minor hockey associations across the country to the highest halls of hockey power, Nicholsons ability to establish, build and maintain connections turned Hockey Canada into a powerful sports organization. After 16 years as president and chief executive officer, Nicholsons last day on the job was spent presiding over the organizations annual general meeting in Calgary. "There are so many partnerships you have to work on," Nicholson said Saturday. "Thats how you grow the business side of the game and how you grow the game itself." His successor will be chosen by Hockey Canadas board of directors. Its a job of many moving parts that includes player, coach and official development programs, national teams, corporate sales and marketing, licensing, insurance, regulations and building consensus among 13 provincial branches. Nicholsons parting instructions also included tapping into Canadas multicultural population. "We need to figure out how to deal with new Canadians," he explained. "We need to be more flexible. We cant just register kids from September to April. We should have two or three hockey seasons. "The families are changing. We cant continue to do things we did in the 70s, 80s and 90s. There has to be change." There was a lot of that during Nicholsons tenure. The 60-year-old from Penticton, B.C., started with B.C. Hockey before joining Hockey Canada as vice-president in 1990. Hockey Canada and the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association merged in 1994 and Nicholson became president in 1998. "The reason there was a merger was both organizations were bankrupt," Nicholson recalled. The non-profit organization is now an operation of approximately $45 million annually due in large part to marketing and packaging of Canadas passion, as well as turning the organization into a brand. "The easiest way to describe that was when I started as president we had 20 staff and we have 127 staff today. Our budgets were $5 million total," Nicholson said. "We just really took the mark and built partnerships." A prime example is the world mens under-20 hockey championship that is a major contributor to the coffers. Hockey Canada parlayed the annual tournaments growing popularity into lucrative sponsorships and a large television contract with TSN. The money goes not only to Hockey Canada, but to the Canadian Hockey League that supplies a large number of players to the tournament as well as minor hockey associations who develop them. Nicholson struck a deal with the Internationaal Ice Hockey Federation to bring the tournament to Canada every two years starting in 2015.dddddddddddd Its also been held in Canada three of the last five years. "The world juniors and the womens worlds, those are a real staple in this country and theyre a big part of the tradition and also the financial side of it," Nicholson said. Canada has won both mens and womens Olympic hockey gold in back-to-back Winter Games. The 2002 mens hockey team, assembled by Wayne Gretzky, won gold to end a 50-year drought at the Winter Olympics. Canadian teams have won 44 gold at world championships, Olympics and World Cups on Nicholsons watch. "Look at the people hes brought into our organization, whether its high-end professional staff or people like Wayne Gretzky and Steve Yzerman," Hockey Canada chairman Jim Hornell said. "His capacity to bring people into our organization is huge and that will live on." Registration rose from 519,000 in 1998 when Nicholson took over to 634,892 this past season. Much of that growth has come in the female game with an increase from 29,000 to almost 90,000 today. Nicholson has also been front and centre on thorny issues. In the wake of revelations that junior hockey coach Graham James sexually abused players, a Speak Out program was established in 1997 to help prevent abuse and bullying in sport. When to introduce bodychecking in minor hockey has been a source of continual and fractious debate. Concussions in hockey are problematic for the long-term health of players. Nicholson emphasized safety in his final address at the AGM. "Everything you do, do it for the player," he said. "Its not about the turf youre representing or the area of the country you live in. Do whats best for the player. Player safety, those terms are all changing. We have to change with the time. "I really believe when I look back 10 years from now, this organization is going to go to a whole other level. As long as you continue to focus on the players, making sure players play this game safe, Canada will always be the country that carries this game worldwide." Establishing an initiation program to introduce children age five and six to hockey is part of Nicholsons legacy. He also oversaw the move of Hockey Canadas headquarters from Father David Bauer Arena at the University of Calgary to the WinSport at Canada Olympic Park. His first day off the job Sunday was to be spent golfing in Penticton. Nicholson will continue as a IIHF vice-president. Speculation is the NHL will come calling. "I dont know," Nicholson said. "In fairness Ive got a lot of options on my table. I told everyone I wasnt going to speak until June 1. Im going to have to deal with some things and see where it goes." Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Chicago White Sox reinstated first baseman Jose Abreu from the 15-day disabled list Monday. Abreu landed on the disabled list with tendinitis in his left ankle on May 18 after establishing major-league rookie records for home runs (10), RBI (32), extra-base hits (19) and total bases (71) through April. In 44 games this season, Abreu is hitting .260 with 11 doubles, 15 home runs, 42 RBI, and 29 runs scored. He led the majors in homers and was second in RBI at the time of his injury. The 27-year-old Cuban slugger became the second player ever to win AL Player of the Month and Rookie of the Month in his first month in the majors during April. Fellow countryman Yasiel Puig of the Dodgers was the first in June 2013. When Miami got into trouble, the All-Star duo bailed out the Heat. Again. James scored the first six points in a decisive 12-2 run, and combined with Wade for Miamis final 20 points in an 87-83 victory over the Indiana Pacers that left the Eastern Conference final tied at a game apiece. "Thats why theyre the hundred million dollar guys," teammate Norris Cole said. "Theyre unstoppable. They make the game easy for everyone else when theyre in attack mode." Thats exactly how the money guys played during the final 12 minutes. Wade, who had 13 points in the Heats 41-point first half, scored his final 10 in the fourth. James, who finished with 22 points, had 12 in the fourth. Together they helped Miami avoid falling into a 2-0 deficit for the first time since the first round of the 2010 playoffs. Lance Stephenson tied his playoff career high with 25 points for the Pacers. Paul George scored 14. Now the series shifts back to Miami for Game 3 on Saturday and Game 4 on Monday. This one had a different feel compared to a couple of Miamis important games in the 2013 post-season. A year ago in Game 7 at Miami, the Heats money players overwhelmed Indiana 99-76. Then, after losing Game 1 in the finals to San Antonio, James, Wade and Chris Bosh helped Miami storm back for a 19-point win. On Tuesday, the Pacers were in a strong position midway through the fourth before James and Wade helped Miami seize the home-court advantage Indiana so desperately wanted for this series. Miami has won 11 straight games following a playoff loss. "Its not going to be pretty. Not in the Eastern Conference," James said. "Its never pretty basketball in the Eastern Conference. Its about who can sustain runs. You know, who can get defensive stops? Who can not turn the ball over and who can get great shots? I think we did that in the fourth." At times, the rough-and-tumble night took on the aura of a football game, especially late. When George and Wade collided chasing a loose ball, both came up grimacing. Wade held his left knee. George also grabbed at his knee though he said afterward he hhad blurred vision and may have blacked out.dddddddddddd Coach Frank Vogel would not confirm Georges description. Another time, James crashed hard to the floor when David West was called for a flagrant one foul in the fourth quarter, which was changed to a common foul following a replay review. There were hard picks, tight defence and James and Wade back in their old groove. The Pacers expected all of it in this title bout. They just couldnt finish it off. "We were winning the whole night," guard George Hill said. "We controlled the whole game until the last couple minutes." But two days after allowing the Pacers to score 107 points, Indianas highest total of the post-season, Miami held Indiana to nine points over a 10-minute stretch in the first half and closed it out with by allowing just 10 points over the final 7:19. "Today it was just about how bad we wanted it," Wade said. "It wasnt about Xs and Os. It wasnt a perfect game by no stretch of the imagination. We kept digging down deep, and we got back to Miami Heat basketball." Even the Heat acknowledged they were in trouble Tuesday after Indiana used a 10-2 third-quarter run to retake a 47-45 lead, and then extended the margin to 63-56 with 2:07 left in the third quarter. James closed out the quarter by finding Bosh and Cole for open 3-pointers to make it 63-62. George hit a 29-footer to make it 73-69 with 7:19 left. But James and Wade stepped up again. James hit a 3 to make it a one-point game, and after Roy Hibbert made a 6-foot hook shot, James scored six straight to start the decisive 12-2 run that sealed the win. "We have no idea were doing that until after the game," James said. "Were just going to make the right play for our team. Tonight was one of those nights."
