Hed say later that the crowd was the biggest factor in the game. The Salukis hung tough for all but about 3 minutes Tuesday tonight, finally falling 78-67 to fourth-ranked Wichita State. It put an end to Southern Illinois four-game winning streak, its best in more than four years, while leaving the Shockers still unbeaten. "Gosh, that crowd," Hinson said. "I hate them -- and I love them. Its an oxymoron." Make no mistake: Hinson loves the passion of Missouri Valley Conference fans. He just wishes he could have better communicated with his players down the stretch, when the game hung in the balance. Instead, the Salukis (10-16, 6-7) starting turning it over on offence, the Shockers (26-0, 13-0) started getting easy baskets at the other end, and Hinson was left standing on the sideline with his hands on his hips, watching mirthlessly as the final seconds ticked away. PITTSBURGH -- The offence cant hold onto the ball. The defence cant take it away. The receivers cant get open. The running backs cant find any holes and the linebackers cant cause any chaos. Other than that, the first two weeks have been just fine for the Pittsburgh Steelers. "Right now, weve got to keep playing," free safety Ryan Clark said. "We cant panic and abandon what we have learned. We do have to shore some things up. We do have to be a lot more sound. If we dont, this is going to keep happening." The Steelers have become one of the NFLs most consistent -- not to mention resilient -- franchises by dealing with adversity on the fly. Old players move on, new ones come forward. At the moment, its not happening. Pittsburghs rebuilt offensive line -- now playing without injured star Maurkice Pouncey -- is struggling. DETROIT -- Nathan MacKinnon had the puck in the final minute of overtime and each of the four opposing skaters stood passively and stared at the phenom. The sensational rookie took full advantage of the attention, breaking one of Wayne Gretzkys records while helping his team win. Andre Benoit, all alone, scored off an assist from MacKinnon with 31.4 seconds left in overtime to lift the Colorado Avalanche to a 3-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night. MacKinnon has a point in 13 straight games, breaking Gretzkys mark for an 18-year-old NHL player that he set during the 1979-80 season. "Its pretty cool," MacKinnon acknowledged. "I want to be as consistent as possible. He probably doubled my point total in those games." Gretzky finished his rookie season with 51 goals and 137 points. MacKinnon has 22 goals and 50 points -- easily leading all rookies in the league this year -- in 63 games.
