"Everything is going pretty

NEW YORK - Islanders star centre John Tavares is the NHLs first star of the week after scoring four goals and adding six assists over New Yorks season-high four-game winning streak. He began the week by recording his second career five-point game, including his fifth career hat trick, in a 7-3 win over the Dallas Stars last Monday. Tavares followed that up by posting three assists in a 5-3 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday. After being held off the score sheet in a 2-1 overtime triumph against the Colorado Avalanche, scored the game-winning goal and added an assist in a 4-2 win over the Stars on Sunday. Anaheim goaltender Jonas Hiller is the second star, posting a 3-0-0 record with a 1.67 goals-against average, .941 save percentage and one shutout over the week. New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist is the third star, going 3-0-1 with a 1.97 goals-against average and .943 save percentage to carry the Rangers into third place in the Metropolitan Division. He struggled to even take off his golf shoes before being driven away to an uncertain future. In his third tournament since returning from back surgery, this had the look of a serious setback. Woods injured himself playing a shot from edge of a bunker on the par-5 second hole. With all weight on his right leg, he took an awkward slash at the ball, fell back toward the sand and landed with a thud, and kept jogging out of the bunker from sheer momentum of the steep drop. "I just jarred it, and its been spasming ever since," Woods told a PGA Tour official before leaving. Woods kept playing, hitting a number of shockingly bad shots. He hit one into the water from the fairway on No. 3, coming up some 30 yards short of the flag. And on the par-3 fifth hole, his tee shot was 65 yards short of the hole. From a bunker left of the seventh green, he blasted out and back into the fairway and made double bogey. He grimaced at impact when he hit a 315-yard drive into the left rough on No. 9. Woods slowly stooped over with his right hand on his leg, reached toward his back and slowly bent down to remove the tee from the ground. Moments later, he stepped into a cart and headed for the parking lot. At his car, Woods could barely switch out of his golf shoes. His caddie, Joe La Cava, drove him away. "Its just the whole lower back," Woods said. "I dont know what happened." Masters champion Bubba Watson said he didnt see Woods hit the shot that hurt him on No. 2, though he could tell as the round went on that something wasnt right. "He hit some shots that were not used to seeing Tiger hit, even when hes coming back from an injury like this," Watson said. "So obviously, something was bothering him. ... Like I told him when I shook his hand, I said, Im praying for you. Hope everything turns out good. Hope to see you next week." With the pain he showed leaving the course -- and just four months removed from back surgery -- it would seem unlikely that Woods plays next week at Valhalla, where he won the PGA Championship in 2000. Woods is scheduled to play the opening two rounds with Phil Mickelson and Padraig Harrington. Mickelson was on the 11th hole -- not far away from No. 9 -- when he noticed Woods leaving. "It didnt look good. It looked like he was really in pain," Mickelson said. "I hope hes OK. I hope hes able to play next week. I hope its a muscle and nothing serious because Im really looking forward to playing with him. We rarely get paired together. If we do, its been early Saturday. "As much as I love playing with him, playingg against him, trying to beat him, we all want him in the field.dddddddddddd We all want him back. I just hope hes OK." If Woods does not play in the PGA Championship, that would be the end of his season. He would have to win the PGA to be eligible for the FedEx Cup playoffs. In six starts on the PGA Tour this year, Woods finished all four rounds only twice. Woods had back surgery March 31 to alleviate an impinged nerve, forcing him to miss the Masters for the first time and the U.S. Open. He returned after three months to Congressional -- three weeks ahead of his own schedule -- and reported no pain in missing the cut by four shots at the Quicken Loans National. He also reported no pain in four rounds at the British Open. He finished 69th, 23 shots out of the lead, his worst 72-hole result in a major. Woods was 3-over par for his round -- and 18 shots off the lead -- when he withdrew at Firestone. He did not say whether he would be able to play the PGA Championship next week -- "Just trying to get out of here," he told the tour official -- though this surely would make it difficult for Tom Watson to consider Woods as a captains pick for the Ryder Cup. The U.S. captain has said for the last few months that he wanted Woods on the team if he was healthy and playing well. Woods was doing neither. Even so, he had not suggested until the shot on the second hole that his back was bothering him. "Hey, this is supposed to be my second tournament back, not my third," Woods said after Fridays round at Firestone. "Everything is going pretty good. Ive gotten a little bit better, and the good news is Im still getting stronger." This was the second time this year Woods had to withdraw in the middle of the final round. At the Honda Classic in March, he stopped after 13 holes. Woods chose to play the next week at Doral, and his back problems showed up Sunday after an awkward stance for a shot out of the bunker. Woods said it was his physical training over the years and his discipline in following doctors orders following microdiscectomy surgery that allowed him to recover quickly. He has gone through four operations on his left knee over the last 20 years, and said the back injury was "way more debilitating than I thought." "Most of the people I talked to who have had the procedure have no idea how Im even back here playing," Woods said at the start of the week. "They just cant understand that. When you have great protocols and you do everything perfectly, everything fell into place. I was able to get back. But now its just continuing, and I still need to get much strong than I am now, and I still need to get much more explosive than I am now. Thats just time." (SportsNetwork.com) - The rolling St. Louis Blues take aim at a fifth straight victory when they host the Edmonton Oilers in Tuesdays battle at Scottrade Center. The Blues have won four in a row since beginning January with a loss at Anaheim and Ken Hitchcocks club has scored five or more goals in each victory during the hot streak. The last time out, St. Louis, which is third in the NHL with an average of 3.14 goals per game, was held under six goals for the first time since the 4-3 loss to the Ducks on Jan. 2. Still, the Blues managed to defeat the visiting Carolina Hurricanes, 5-4, in Saturdays shootout. T.J. Oshie scored the lone goal in the shootout to lift the Blues past the Hurricanes and improve to 15-4-1 at home this season. St. Louis is 2-0 so far on a seven-game homestand and wont play its next road tilt until it visits Carolina on Jan. 30. Oshie, the Blues first shooter, patiently skated through the slot, got Cam Ward to bite on a fake and lifted a shot into the top of the net. Jake Allen made Oshies effort stand as he stopped all three shooters, including a slick glove save on Alexander Semin to end the game. Vladimir Tarasenko, Jaden Schwartz, Alexander Steen and Patrik Berglund all scored in regulation for the Blues. Allen stopped 19-of-20 shots in relief of Brian Elliott, who allowed three goals on 10 shots during the first period. Despite the slow start, we came back in the second period, Blues defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk said. It was a good effort getting back and getting on the right side of things. The Blues, who are currently third in the Central Division and five points ahead of Winnipeg, have dominated Edmonton in recent years, taking four straight, nine of 10 and 15 of the last 18 meetings with the Oilers. St. Louis recorded a 4-3 overtime win against a visiting Edmonton club on Nov. 28, giving the Blues eight wins over the past nine encounters in the Gateway City. The Oilers are 3-2-2 over their last seven games and were handed a 4-2 home setback by the Florida Panthers on Sunday. Ben Scrivens stopped 23-of-27 shots for Edmonton, which was looking to win back-to-back games for the first time since Nov. 7-9. The Oilers beat the visiting Chicago Blackhawks 5-2 on Friday. Edmonton hasnt won a road game since beating the New York Rangers on Nov. 9, but hopes to change that on a four-game swing that begins tonight. The Oilers have lost a franchise-record 12 straight (0-6-6) on the road since beating the Blueshirts at Madison Square Garden over two months ago. The Oilers also will make stops in Tampa, Florida and Washington during this trek. They are 2-10-7 as the visiting club. Allen will get the start in net for the Blues tonight. He is 1-1-0 with a 4.02 goals against average in his career against Edmonton. Scrivens is 2-1-1 with a 3.67 GAA in his career against St. Louis, while Viktor Fasth has a win in his only career outing versus the Blues. Fasth earned a win against St. Louis while still playing for Anaheim on Feb. 9, 2013, yielding five goals on 31 shots in a 6-5 Ducks win. Mike McGlinchey Jersey . The 19-year-old from Longueil, Que., was rewarded for that consistency with the Canadian Hockey Leagues player-of-the year award Saturday. Mantha had 81 goals in 81 games and added another 77 assists for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League champion Foreurs. "For sure Im proud of that," the towering winger said. "Its a lot of goals, but the credit needs to come back to my teammates that helped me out through this year. "I think it was just a great season. I put a lot of pressure on myself by leading the team on the ice, off the ice also." Mantha was chosen for the CHLs top individual trophy ahead of Western Hockey League nominee Sam Reinhart of the Kootenay Ice and the Ontario Hockey Leagues Connor Brown of the Erie Otters. Brown was the CHLs top scorer in the regular season with 45 goals and 83 assists in 68 games. Reinhart earned the CHLs sportsmanlike award for recording just 11 minutes in penalties during the season. Mantha accepted the top-player award not long after the Foreurs were eliminated from the MasterCard Memorial Cup. The Foreurs fell 4-3 in triple overtime to the Edmonton Oil Kings in Fridays semifinal. The game was the longest game in Memorial Cup history at 102 minutes 42 seconds of play. Manthas teammates had already departed for Val-dOr on Saturday morning, but the right-winger remained in London to accept the player-of-the-year trophy. "It does feel weird," Mantha acknowledged. "Today, its an individual trophy that I won. For sure, I would have liked way better the trophy from (Sunday), but I mean Ill take this one. "Its a trophy that my teammates helped me out to win this year and I need to give them the credit." Mantha, six foot five and 204 pounds, finished the Memorial Cup with a goal and three assists. His was the lone goal in a 1-0 win over the host Knights to open the tournament. Mantha was drafted in the first round and 20th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2013 NHL entry draft. Foreurs coach Mario Durocherr said during the Memorial Cup that Mantha returned from his first NHL training camp a changed player.dddddddddddd "Last year, I would say a lot of critics were on my consistency level," Mantha said. "When I went to Detroit they tried to put that mentality in me and I think it did work for this year. I came back with that attitude and it was just a great thing for me." He was also Canadas top scorer at this years world junior hockey championship with five goals and six assists in six games. Previous winners of the CHLs top-player award include Jonathan Drouin (2013), Jordan Eberle (2011), John Tavares (2007), Sidney Crosby (2004, 2005), Brad Richards (2000), Eric Lindros (1991) and Joe Sakic (1988). "Its a great award to win and I think its something thats going to stay in mind for a few months if not for a few years, but I need to pass to another level in my career," Mantha said. "I think Ill be ready for it." Derrick Pouliot of the Western Hockey Leagues Portland Winterhawks was named the CHLs top defenceman. The Pittsburgh Penguins prospect had 70 points in 58 games with a plus-minus of plus-40. Jordan Cooke of the Kelowna Rockets earned the trophy for best goaltender. The 20-year-old posted a record of 39-7-0-4 with a goals-against average of 2.28 and a save percentage of .922, Halifax Mooseheads forward Nikolaj Ehlers was chosen top rookie. The 18-year-old from Denmark had a plus-minus rating of plus-65 while contributing 49 goals and 53 assists in 63 games. The coaching award went to Eric Veilleux of the Baie-Comeau Drakkar, who reached the QMJHL final before falling in seven games to Val-dOr. Kingston Frontenacs forward Sam Bennett was selected the top NHL prospect. He is ranked first overall among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting for the draft next month. Erie Otter forward Connor McDavid won the scholastic award with an 87 per cent average in his second semester of Grade 11. four doubles and seven RBIs.

DORAL, Fla. -- Patrick Reed followed a big win with a bold comment. Reed was dripping with confidence even before the final round of the Cadillac Championship. He had two wins in his previous 13 starts on the PGA Tour. He knew his game could handle any course, even a new Blue Monster that yielded the fewest 72-hole scores under par in the 52-year history of Doral. And even having Tiger Woods just three shots behind and in the group head of him didnt keep Reed from wearing black pants and a red shirt. He delivered a final round Sunday that even Woods could have appreciated. Reed doubled his two-shot lead with two quick birdies, hit five quality bunker shots on the back nine that led to pars and closed with an even-par 72 and a one-shot victory. Bubba Watson played bogey-free over the final 27 holes at Trump National Doral and closed with a 68. He was the first to post a 3-under 285. Jamie Donaldson of Wales got within one shot of Reed before he found a back bunker on the 18th and missed a par putt just inside 15 feet for a 70 to join Watson. Reed played the 18th conservatively with an iron off the tee -- just like Woods did in one of his four wins at Doral -- made bogey and finished at 4-under 284. Thats three wins in seven months for the 23-year-old Texan. He now is the youngest winner of a World Golf Championship. Surprised? Reed sure isnt. He had said he felt like he belonged among the top five in the world, and Reed wasnt about to back down after beating the strongest field in golf so far this year. "I dont see a lot of guys that have done that besides Tiger Woods and the legends of the game," Reed said of his three wins, including a WGC title. "I believe in myself, especially with how hard Ive worked. Im one of the top five players in the world. I feel like Ive proven myself." So who are the other four? He mentioned Woods, whom Reed considers the best to ever play. Reed grew up watching Woods in a red shirt and black plants on Sunday, and thought it would be wise to do the same thing. Those now are his Sunday colours, and hes now 3 for 3 when having at least a share of the 54-hole lead. He mentioned Adam Scott and Phil Mickelson. He is constantly impressed with Graeme McDowell. He played Saturday with Dustin Johnson and saw how good Johnson can be when he puts it all together. So thats five names right there, without even getting to FedEx Cup and Race to Dubai winner Henrik Stenson, Match Play champion Jason Day or two-time major champion Rory McIlroy. So maybe it was a figure of speech. "Tough question," Reed said with a grin. "Those guys, theres so many great players out there." He at least has reason to count himself among them. Reed moved up to No. 20 in the world, and hes starting to think he can win any week, anywhere. Even the Masters? He led Augusta State to two NCAA titles. Reed makes his debut at Augusta National next month, and his outlook is changing. "Before this event, my goal was to compete and be in contention come Sunday at Augusta," Reed said. "To go and play the field -- all these guys are going to be at Augusta -- to go wire-to-wire, that definitely just gives me more confidence come Sunday that if I play how Im supposed to at Augusta, that well be in the running." Woods is limping to the Masters. One week after he withdrew from the final round of the Honda Classic after 13 holes, he said his back flared up again after an awkward shot from the bunker on the sixth hole. He wound up with a 78, his highest score ever on Sunday, and for the first time failed to make a single birdie in the final round. His hopes were gone by the sixth hole, anyway. Woods beaned two spectators in three holes with tee shots and already was seven shots behind. He said he spent the rest of the day fighting spasms, and only said after his round, "Its over. Its finally done, which is good." He tied for 25th, his best finish in four events this year. He missed a 54-hole cut at Torrey Pines, tied for 41st in Dubai and withdrew from the Honda Classic. "Just let me get through this day, get some treatment and well assess it as time goes on," Woods said of his back. His next scheduled start is March 20 at Bay Hill, where he is defending champion and an eight-time winner. Asked if he has had an MRI on his back or planned more tests, Woods said, "Well, it is back spasms. So weve done all the protocols and its just a matter of keeping everything aligned so I dont go into that." Reed certainly has his golf aligned nicely. He won the Wyndham Championship last August in a playoff over Jordan Spieth. He went wire-to-wire at the Humana Challenge, opening with three 63s. And then against a strong field, he went wire-to-wire (including ties) at Doral. Can he live with being No. 20 for now? "Oh, yeah," Reed said with a smile. Terrell Owens Jersey . PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Pedro Alvarezs first homer in almost three weeks helped the Pittsburgh Pirates improve to .500 for just the second time in more than two months. The slumping 2013 co-NL home run champion backed Edinson Volquezs pitching with a three-run shot, keying an 8-1 victory over the sputtering Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night. "It always helps, obviously, when I can contribute to a team victory," said Alvarez, whos hitting .232 with 12 homers and 38 RBIs. "Ive always said sometimes results arent indicative of how you may feel at the plate, and I feel like Im a good place," the slugger added. "Im just going to continue to work." Andrew McCutchen went 3 for 5, drove in two runs and stole two bases for the Pirates in a homecoming of sorts for last years NL MVP, who grew up in nearby Fort Meade and had never played before at Tropicana Field. He also scored twice in Pittsburghs first appearance in St. Petersburg since 2003. Alvarez, who hadnt homered since June 3, went deep off Alex Cobb (2-6) during a four-run fourth inning that also featured the first of McCutchens two RBI singles. The first-pitch, 419-foot drive over the wall in centre field snapped a season-high 16-game stretch without a homer -- Alvarezs longest since a 22-game drought that began in September 2012 and extended into last season. "A lot of times people have been taking their chances with Pedro, and hes an important part of our offence," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "We need him to fire, we need him to drive in runs and that was very good to see. Three-run homers always play well." Volquez (5-6) allowed five hits in a season-high eight innings. James Loney drove in Tampa Bays only run with a two-out, first-inning single, and the Pirates supported their starting pitcher by turning three double plays. "I got a lot of help," Volquez said. The Pirates climbed to .500 (38-38) for just the second timme since April 17, when they were 8-8.dddddddddddd They have won four of five following a three-game skid and are a NL-best 26-18 since May 6. Tampa Bay has dropped 19 of its past 27 and is saddled with the worst record in the major leagues at 31-47. "I feel like with every loss its an opportunity missed," Cobb said, adding if the Rays are going to turn their season around theyve got to get on a roll soon. McCutchen, who is batting .366 in June, boosted his average in 11 interleague games to .425 with nine walks, four doubles and seven RBIs. His run-scoring single off Cobb moved him ahead of Brian Giles for the Pirates career record for RBIs in interleague action with 52. He added another in the ninth off Kirby Yates. Alvarez, meanwhile, is hitting .317 with two home runs and eight RBIs against AL teams this season. Cobb, making his seventh start since spending five weeks on the disabled list with a left oblique strain, allowed six runs and six hits in five innings. Volquez won for the third time in his last five starts. The right-hander walked two, struck out one and didnt allow a hit after the fourth inning. Three of Tampa Bays six hits were infield singles, including Kevin Kiermaiers second-inning bunt. Jeanmar Gomez pitched the ninth for the Pirates, yielding a two-out single to Loney. Tuesday at the Scotties Tournament of

NEW YORK -- If Commissioner Roger Goodell gets his way, change could be coming to the NFL. Adding playoff teams. Monitoring instant replay from league headquarters. Possibly creating a set of guidelines to prevent locker-room bullying. Short on details or precise timetables, and acknowledging hell need approval from team owners for action, Goodell painted the picture of an ever-evolving league during his annual pre-Super Bowl news conference, held Friday in a theatre in midtown Manhattan. Goodell said "theres a lot of benefits" to increasing the post-season field from 12 to 14 clubs. "We think we can make the league more competitive. We think we can make the matchups more competitive toward the end of the season. There will be more excitement, more memorable moments for our fans. And thats something that attracts us," Goodell said. "We think we can do it properly from a competitive standpoint. So this will continue to get very serious consideration by the competition committee." That sort of proposal would require "Yes" votes from 24 of the 32 owners. At least one who attended Goodells speech, Jeffrey Lurie of the Philadelphia Eagles, sounded in favour of the idea, with a couple of caveats: He wouldnt want to let too many teams into the post-season, and hed like to hear more about scheduling. "We dont want to become like some other sports, where its too easy to make the playoffs," Lurie said. "Adding one team would not put us in a counterproductive situation. But when you would play the games, I think, is very important, so that the following games, you have virtually an equal time to prepare." Making a not-so-subtle reference to mistakes by game officials this season, Goodell said that committee also will make recommendations to the 32 owners about having replays from all games overseen by the league office. Major League Baseball recently joined the NHL as sports that have centralized replay systems. "We think theres plenty of room for us to improve the game of football, and officiating in particular. What we all want is consistency and fairness in our officiating," Goodell said. "I do believe there is a possibility that some version of that will occur -- where our office can at least be involved with the decision. It may not make the decision," he added, "but at least can provide some input that would be helpful to the officials on the field to make sure theyre seeing every angle." Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney said he needs more information before deciding whether hed be in favour. "Our situation is different than hockey. But I think we should look at everything," Rooney said. "Maybe we want to expand the number of incidents that you look at. A lot of times theyll say, Thats not reviewable. Look into that, for example." New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft likes the suggestion. "Games should be standardized and have the same people making the calls," Kraft said. "I dont want to ever lose a game based on poor interpretation of rules by (different) officials." Another focal point, according to Goodell, will be preventing the kind of alleged bullying that rocked the Miami Dolphins this season. "Ive already begun discussions with outside parties. Ive discussed it with the union, Ive also met with several groups of players, individually and collectively, to talk about the circumstances. What needs to be done?" Goodell said. "Some of it will be education. Some of it possibly could be policy change." Speaking two days before the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks play in East Rutherford, N.J., Goodell did not respond directly to questions whether other cold-weather cities with outdoor stadiums could host NFL championship games. During his opening remarks, Goodell said: "One unique aspect about the focus for this years Super Bowl has been on the weather. Of course, we cannot control the weather. I told you we were going to embrace the weather. Here we go." And with that, flakes of fake snow fell from the ceiling above the stage, drawing laughter. Among other topics addressed by Goodell: --The NFL is working to convince a federal judge in Philadelphia that the tentative $765 million settlement reached with former players who sued the league about concussions "can provide the kind of benefits that we intended, and were confident that well get there"; --The difficulty in selling out wild-card playoff games resulted from "mistakes that were made by us, the NFL, and our clubs," and not fans fault, and that improving stadium safety "is a critical component"; --The NFL is "not actively considering" allowing players to use marijuana for medical reasons, but "thats something we would never take off the table, if it can benefit our players"; --Selling out all three of next seasons games in London is "just another indication that the more we give fans in the U.K. of NFL football, the more they want" and that the possibility of placing a franchise in that country is closer to reality than a year ago; --He deflected a question about whether hed call a Native American a "Redskin" face-to-face, saying, "Lets not forget this is the name of a football team." ------ AP Pro Football Writer Barry Wilner and Sports Writers Rachel Cohen, Tim Booth and Tom Canavan contributed to this report. MIAMI - Miss Universe Canada is hoping to take home the crown at the pageant, but shes already scored big buzz with her outlandish hockey-themed costume.Chanel Beckenlehner took to the stage in a preliminary Miss Universe competition sporting a corseted bustier emblazoned with a black and white Maple Leaf. The Caledon, Ont., native paired it with a skirt resembling goal-post netting. She also wore knee-high, lace-up boots reminiscent of skates, wings fashioned out of hockey sticks, and a replica of the Stanley Cup as a head piece. The 26-year-old capped off the towering ensemble with an electronic scoreboard and a goaltender stick.Images of Beckenlehners costume blanketed Twitter on Thursday, with a mix of praise and pans for the outfit. Terrance Broadway threw for 227 yards and Hunter Stover kicked three field goals as the Ragin Cajuns won an unprecedented fourth straight New Orleans Bowl with a 16-3 triumph over Nevada. Atlanta Falcons Jerseys . -- Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera has a broken bone below his right eye after being struck by a bad-hop grounder, sidelining the star slugger for at least a week with opening day on deck. The coaching change two weeks ago seems to be just the start of a much-needed overhaul for the woeful Edmonton Oilers, who may not have any untouchables on the roster as their dismal season continues. Derek Roy and Matt Fraser are the newest additions, but its unclear if theyll play Tuesday night as Edmonton looks to avoid a 10th consecutive loss overall and eighth straight to the visiting Los Angeles Kings. The Oilers (7-22-7) have the fewest points in the NHL and have won just a single game over their last 21. Coach Todd Nelson has gone 0-3-2 since replacing Dallas Eakins on Dec. 15. Trade rumors also have swirled regarding Edmonton possibly looking to move big-name players like Taylor Hall, one of three No. 1 overall picks on the roster along with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Nail Yakupov. Nugent-Hopkins scored the Oilers goal in a 4-1 loss to Calgary on Saturday. Theyve been outscored 33-16 during a 0-7-2 stretch. In this league, its so hard to come back from even just one or two goals, so to spot them three is unfortunate, Nugent-Hopkins said. Edmonton made a pair of moves Monday, trading forward Mark Arcobello to Nashville for Roy and claiming Fraser off waivers from Boston. Roy, a four-time 20-goal scorer, had just one goal and nine assists in 26 games for the Predators. There has been no word if Roy or Fraser will dress for this contest. Roy had an assist in Nashvilles win in Edmonton on Oct. 29 that began a 1-10-2 home stretch for the Oilers. There is a ton of skill on the (Oilers). Its evident every game, Roy told Edmontons official website. Its a great opportunity for me. I think having all those young and skilled players around me is just going to help me and I can help them and then we can move forward and win some hockeyy games.dddddddddddd Thats been a tall task for the Oilers, especially against Los Angeles. Tanner Pearson had two goals and an assist while Tyler Toffoli and Jeff Carter had one of each in a 6-1 victory Oct. 14 over Edmonton, which has been outscored 24-6 during its losing streak against the Kings. Los Angeles (18-12-7) is looking to bounce back after Mondays 2-1 loss to Calgary to begin a three-game road trip through Canada. Toffoli scored for the second straight game, but Marian Gaborik sat out with flu-like symptoms. Its unclear if Gaborik, who has seven goals and three assists during a six-game point streak, will be ready for this contest. You give up two goals like that (in the first period), its a tough start, especially on the road, forward Jarret Stoll said. Weve got to play better, weve got to lock things down, do a better job of checking, and be a quicker, faster team. Jonathan Quick faced only 15 shots, but Martin Jones still could get the nod in this contest. Jones is 3-3-1 with a 2.04 goals-against average in eight appearances and had back-to-back shutouts before losing 6-2 to Montreal in his last start Dec. 12. Viktor Fasth has a 3.78 GAA while losing eight straight starts after giving up three goals on six shots Saturday before Ben Scrivens replaced him. Scrivens, acquired in a trade with the Kings in January, allowed three goals in relief against his former team in the first meeting this season. short-term deal and the Daily

Columbus, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - The Columbus Blue Jackets have placed defenseman James Wisniewski and center Mark Letestu on injured reserve. Wisniewski is expected to be sidelined for at least a week and possibly two weeks with a broken finger he suffered in Tuesdays game against Ottawa. Letestu could be out for a month with a groin injury he sustained against the Senators. In nine games this season, Wisniewski has three assists. He led all Columbus defensemen in scoring last season with 51 points in 75 games. Letestu has three goals and two assists in nine games. He could return in two weeks under a best-case scenario. Columbus has been beset by injuries in the first month of the season. Goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky is also out with a broken finger, while forwards Artem Anisimov (head), Matt Calvert (upper body) and Nick Foligno (stinger) have also been hurt since last weekend. v again called over Cahill for motivation

SAN DIEGO -- Hyun-Jin Ryus stint on the disabled list was nothing more than a speed bump. Ryu came off the DL to pitch four-hit ball over seven innings, and Matt Kemp singled in the go-ahead run to help the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres 7-1 Sunday and avoid a three-game sweep. Ryu (14-6) struck out seven and walked none while allowing one run in his first start since a loss at Atlanta on Aug. 13, when he hurt his right hip. Ryu improved to 4-0 lifetime against the Padres. "It didnt take long for me to find the rhythm," Ryu said through a translator. "I knew it was two weeks, but it felt like I was just there a few days ago. Overall I just felt comfortable, and thats why I was able to pitch comfortable." Ryu allowed a double to Yangervis Solarte leading off the first and then Yasmani Grandals two-out RBI double to tie the game. But then the left-hander settled down and retired his next 14 batters. The Padres got only two more baserunners against Ryu, both on singles, and one was erased during a double play. "I thought he was good," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "First guy gets on, then it seems like he got a quick gear. By the sixth he looked a little bit tired, and in the seventh we let him know that was pretty much it. He seemed to know it." Padres manager Bud Black said Ryus four-pitch mix was impressive. "This guy is a good pitcher. The Dodgers just didnt go get him from Korea for nothing and give him a lot of money. He is talented," Black said. "Its a fastball that has velocity and darting action. He has a hard slider in the high 80s (mph) that he commands and he has a good hook, a 12-to-6 hook that he can land for a strike, and a good change. "He is truly a complete pitcher." The seven runs were one more than the Dodgers scored in their previous three games combined. They lost by one run in extra innings in the first two games of the series. The Dodgers kept their 2 1/2-game lead over the San Francisco Giants, who beat Milwaukee 15-5 for their sixth straight win. "Its always good for us," Mattingly said. "Were in position to control our own destiny." Adrian Gonzalez had four hits. He also scored the first of the Dodgers four runs in the eighth against three relievers. The Padres four-game winning streak was snapped. They had beaten the NL West leaders in extra innings the first two games of the series. Kemp broke a 1-all tie when his single to centre with one out in the fifth brought in Hanley Ramirez. Ramirez walked against lefty Eric Stults (6-15) and advanced on Gonzalezs single to left. The Dodgers piled it on in the eighth, when they had five hits and two walks. Juan Uribe, who also came off the DL, hit an RBI single and Darwin Barney had a two-run single. Uribe added an RBI double in the ninth. Stults tied for the major league lead with his career-high 15th loss, which gives him 28 losses in two seasons. The Dodgers had been 1 for 15 with runners in scoring position in the series before Scott Van Slyke hit a broken-bat single with two outs in the first to bring in Yasiel Puig. Puig reached on a hustle double opening the game when his fly ball -- made more challenging by the sun -- fell between right fielder Rymer Liriano and second baseman Jedd Gyorko. Puig advanced on a passed ball and scored on Van Slykes single to right. Liriano threw to third to get Kemp to end the inning. PREGAME PUIG The Dodgers star outfielder played catch pregame with two kids. He was instructing one of them on how to hit the cutoff man, something hes better at showing than actually doing. Puig then went over to the stands, signed autographs and posed for photos with fans for several minutes. ADRIAN GONZALEZ It was Gonzalezs sixth career four-hit game at Petco Park, the most by any player in the stadiums 11 seasons. Gonzalez was with the Padres from 2006-10. TRAINERS ROOM Dodgers: To make room for Ryu and Uribe, reliever Carlos Frias and infielder Miguel Rojas were optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque. Padres: Black said closer Joaquin Benoit has inflammation in his pitching shoulder that needs to settle down for seven to 10 days. Kevin Quackenbush will serve as the closer. UP NEXT Dodgers: Roberto Hernandez (2-1, 3.52 ERA) is scheduled to start the opener of a three-game home series against Washington. He is 3-1 with a 1.19 ERA in four career starts vs. the Nationals. Padres: Tyson Ross (12-12, 2.64) pitches the opener of a four-game home series against Arizona. San Diego has won six of his last eight starts. Sean Rodriguez Jersey . Then youve got to worry about the other up and coming teams in the two weaker divisions in the "Junior Circuit". Gregory Polanco Jersey . Carreno Busta broke his opponent five times in the match, but also lost his serve three times in the second set before prevailing in the tiebreaker. Both players struggled with their first serve, as Carreno Busta landed just 51 per cent of his to 47 per cent for Kukushkin. John Jaso Jersey . - Kentucky freshmen Stanley Boom Williams, Dorian Baker, Drew Barker and Tymere Dubose have been charged with disorderly conduct for their involvement with air pistol shots being fired near a residence hall on the South campus Sunday night. Starling Marte Jersey . PAUL, Minn. TORONTO -- Serena Williams insists its not as easy as it looks. The top-seeded American breezed to her third Rogers Cup title with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over unseeded Romanian Sorana Cirstea in Sundays final, giving Williams her eighth WTA title of the year and 54th of her career. She didnt drop a set all week at the $2.369-million tournament and lost only 22 games, almost half of which came against third-seed Agnieszka Radwanska in a semifinal match which proved to be the only real test for the world No. 1 in Toronto. With the absence of top-five players Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka, and the early exit of Wimbledon champ Marion Bartoli, all due to injury, Williamss path to the title was made considerably less obstructed. But with expectation comes pressure, and Williams proved more than up to the task. "No tournament is ever easy, especially being in the position I am in," said Williams. "The tournament starts and they expect you to win. And the tournament is like, youre going to be in the final and after your semifinal I want you to do this, and you have to do this and this press. Who knows if Ill even make it to the semifinals? "Its a lot of pressure. Its not easy." Williams says she likes where her game it as heading towards the U.S Open, where she is the defending champion, and shell look to use this victory as momentum this week in Cincinnati. Despite only having lost one match since March, a stunning early exit at Wimbledon, Williams says theres still room for improvement. "For me its always about constantly improving and never saying I did great and I can be satisfied," she said. "I did great (today), but what can I do better? What can I improve on? Thats what I always strive for. "When I get satisfied, and for a lot of players, the (playing) level goes down." Cirstea, meanwhile, had a breakthrough tournament, having ousted two former world No. 1s in Jelena Jankovic and Caroline Wozniacki before dethroning defending champion Petra Kvitova in the quarters, then fourth-seed Li Na of China in the semifinals. She was appearing in only her third WTA final and looking to build on her only title, won way back in 2008 at Tashkent. "For me its been a really positive week and Im going to take everything that well to the next tournament," said Cirstea. Cirstea showed her nerves from the opening game, double faulting the first point and again at 30-40 to give Williams an early break. Williams broke again for 3-0 after Cirstea sent a backhand wide. That prompted a visit from her Australian coach Darren Cahilll, who gave the 23-year-old a pep talk.dddddddddddd It appeared to work momentarily as Cirstea won four straight points to break back and held serve at 3-2 to get back in the match. But Williams quickly removed any chance of an upset, winning two straight games and acing a set point winner for 6-2. "The start was not as bad as the scored showed," said Cirstea. "The first three games I had really good chances so I could have been up three-love. Suddenly I found myself down three-love. I know the score seems quite tough but there were moments when I felt the match was closer than it seemed." With shouts of "Sorana" and "Serena" volleying back and forth around the stadium like tennis balls, splashes of Romanias blue, yellow and red could be seen dotting the almost-full Rexall Centre stands on a warm, sunny afternoon. "I was surprised to see how many Romanians there were out there and how many flags Ive seen," said Cirstea. "It was an incredible atmosphere and it made me feel like home when they were screaming, supporting me and saying positive things. Im looking forward to coming back here." The vocal contingent cheering on Cirstea didnt have much to go on in the second set. Williams broke out of the gate using her trademark power strokes to keep Cirstea running and ripped a 199 km/h ace to hold serve at 2-0. Cirstea, with her head hanging low, again called over Cahill for motivation, but it did little this time as Williams eased through the final four games and wrapped up the match in just over an hour. Williams gets $426,000 for the win while Cirstea will take home $213,000 -- almost half her prize money earned so far this year. Cirstea teared up during the trophy presentation and graciously expressed her admiration for Williams. "Usually Im quite emotional," said the Romanian. "Of course I was disapointed because I wanted to play better, so its mixed feelings out there. I think even if I won today I would still be crying." All three of Williamss Rogers Cup titles have come in Toronto, the first in 2001 before winning it again in 2011. She says she loves playing in this city because of the friends who come out to see her play. Local hip-hop star Drake, who was also present for her 2011 win, sat courtside and cheered on Williams. "Were really good friends," said Williams, "I was excited that he made it today." In the doubles final, Jankovic and Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia won 5-7, 6-2, 10-6 over Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany and Czech Kveta Peschke. put a player into treatment.

Villanova, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Darrun Hilliard had 21 points and four steals and No. 8 Villanova dismantled DePaul 81-64, handing the Blue Demons their first conference loss of the season. Ryan Arcidiacono scored 14 points on 5-for-6 shooting, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range, in Villanovas second straight convincing win following its first loss of the season, an overtime setback against Seton Hall on Jan. 3. It started with our defense and we really shared the ball well, Villanova head coach Jay Wright said. I thought the first half was the key to the game. The Wildcats (15-1, 3-1 Big East) outscored St. Johns and DePaul by 35 points since losing to Seton Hall and have shot 23-for-52 from behind the arc during this two-game win streak. Tommy Hamilton IV and Darrick Wood posted 12 and 10 points, respectively, for DePaul (9-8, 3-1), which entered Saturdays tilt as the only unbeaten team in the Big East. DePaul turned the ball over four times during a 13-0 Villanova run early in the contest. Hilliard kicked off the spurt with 3-pointers on consecutive possessions and Daniel Ochefus jam at 12:03 capped it and gave Nova a 16-5 lead. Later in the half, the Blue Demons went nearly five minutes without scoring as Villanova extended its lead to 24-9. Arcidiacono then followed in Hilliards footsteps with 3s on back-to-back touches during an 11-0 flurry. A designed play at the end of the half, executed to perfection, sent the Wildcats into the locker rooms with a 21-point lead. After Hamilton made three free throws with two seconds to play, Josh Hart made a baseball pass from under his own basket all the way down the court. Ochefu caught it in traffic and quickly swung to a wide-open Arcidiacono, whose baseline jumper beat the buzzer. The spread reached 34 points in the second half before Villanova pulled its starters and DePaul made the final score more respectable. Game Notes DePaul has now lost 49 in a row against AP-ranked opponents ... Its last win against a ranked foe came on Jan. 3, 2008, against then-No. 17 Villanova ... Johnson said in a vague statement issued by his management company that he would take a leave of absence effective immediately to seek professional help for "personal challenges." The announcement Thursday brought an abrupt end to his PGA Tour season, knocking him out of the PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup. Golf.com reported Friday that the tour suspended Johnson for six months. It cited an unidentified source as saying Johnson failed a drug test for the third time. "With regards to media reports that Dustin Johnson has been suspended by the PGA Tour, this is to clarify that Mr. Johnson has taken a voluntary leave of absence and is not under a suspension from the PGA Tour," the tours statement said. It was rare for the tour to comment on any matters related to potential discipline. On Thursday, after Johnson announced his leave of absence, the only statement from the tour was that it had "nothing to add" and that it wished him well and looked forward to his return. The PGA Tour began drug testing in July 2008. One year later, PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem was asked to confirm that there had been no positive tests in the first year from either recreational or performance-enhancing drugs. He drew a distinction between the two. "I said we have had no positive tests with respect to performance enhancing. We may have had somee test results that trouble us in other areas that we treat in a different bucket," Finchem said in July 2009.dddddddddddd"But we dont publicize those. We treat those as conduct unbecoming. If we get a test like that, we will consider it conduct becoming, and what are our choices? We can suspend a player. We can fine a player. We can do both of those and put a player into treatment." Johnson is not the first player to take a leave of absence. John Daly announced in September 1994 that he was taking the rest of the year off because of "mental and physical" problems. In announcing Dalys decision, Finchem repeatedly used the word "voluntary," but said the decision was reached after numerous meetings between Daly and the tour. Daly said Friday evening he could not recall details from 20 years ago. He said of Johnson, "I hope hes all right." Daly most recently was suspended in 2008 following a tumultuous year of off-course incidents. He called The Associated Press to say he had been suspended for six months because "Id rather be honest, especially with the fans." The tour, told that Daly had confirmed his suspension, declined comment citing its longstanding policy on not discussing discipline. Meanwhile, the PGA of America issued a new Ryder Cup points list Friday that removed Johnson from the standings. He had been No. 5, virtually certain to be an automatic selection when qualifying ends after the PGA Championship next week. men who had never

Back in the day, the same four of us (Jon, Ian, Darren, and I) would meet up at Montreals legendary Copacabana to watch whatever game was on. We were regulars at the bar, a kind dive where you could just drop in and know someone familiar would be around to have a beer with. The kind of place where the adult beverage of choice was quickly placed in front of you upon your arrival. We were there to watch games, but it was more than that. We were a bunch of writers, at different points in our careers and lives, getting away from our lives. It was group therapy. With beer. There were few better nights in those years than a good Habs game at Copa. Friends would come in and out, for a period or two, for a drink or four. Partners would join us, or not. Between periods wed chide each other the way friends do, bemoan each others losses, celebrate each others victories. We played a game within the game called JägerMuller. If Habs assistant coach Kirk Muller appeared on screen (not including wide angle or crowd shots) the last person to yell JägerMuller had to buy a round of Jägermeister for the group. This often led to empty wallets and foggy third periods, but JägerMuller was ours and it made a contextual experience all that more unique, all that more memorable. As time passed, the opportunity to watch sports as a group got more and more challenging. Copa closed. People had kids, moved away, traveled for work, or had partners who wouldnt permit them to indulge in Tuesday night binge drinking. But we live in the high speed digital age, an age ruled by social media and easy communication. The four of us opened up a Facebook thread that was for any sort of conversation: dating woes, the challenges of child rearing, the merits of wasabi peas, politics, the importance of Tums to men in their 30s, the overwhelming fear of ones own mortality, the petulance of poets, why soccer sucks. We tried Skype and Google Hangouts, but as aging writers we found we preferred the anonymity of messaging, the quiet comfort of watching the game both alone and in the company of those we love. But for the most part the thread is for watching hockey games together from afar, often still with our favourite adult beverage in hand, though the days of JägerMuller are over. That games virtues, like nachos, dont transfer well through the digital ether. The Facebook threads message count is somewhere in the mid-40 thousand range as of this writing, and growing each day. An exponential explosion is expected during the playoffs, though Jon (a Jets fan) and Ian (a Leafs apologist) will be forced to cheer for their second favourite teams. The virtual bar that the digital age has provided us pales in comparison to their company, but it has allowed us to stay close, to continue to care about each other the way we did when were separated by city blocks and not oceans and responsibilities. But the bar that we left just a few years ago is not the same bar where sports are enjoyed today. Its a lesser venue. Consider the bar argument. No longer can hours be spent fighting over what year Gretzky scored 50 goals in 39 games, what round Luc Robitaille was drafted in, the rate at which Randy Carlyles hairline has been receding. Answers are too quickly found on our phones, and the shortened distance of knowledge does not promote an expanse of conversation. Plus, the bars too busy tweeting cleverness in 140 characters, or arguing with some 12-year-old in Abbostford over whos the better d-man, Subban or Weber. Or instagramming retro-filtered photos of our cocktails. Or adding the waitress as a friend on Facebook. Theres a grand irony in the fact that the same advents that have made watching sports a more communal experience with those who cant be in our presence has had the opposite effect on those in our presence. On the off nights where my friends cant meet up in the digital bar, and I dont have the wherewithal or funds to hit the real bar I, like most, watch games with Twitter open. But instead of finding a substitute for those who cant be with me, Im overwhelmed by the faux-expertise and bravado that ends up in my feed. Just because you have a blog and 45 Twitter followers doesnt exactly make you Bob McKenzie. I appreciate fandom and respect the free speech virtues of the medium, but holy hell @HabsFan4lyfe69 if you cant spell Michel Therrien, you really shouldnt be offered the privilege of publicly questioning the size of his manhood. The amount of valuable discourse is too often overshadowed by the sycophantic, or vile, or uninformed. Just look at what happens when Joel Ward scores in overtime or Jason Collins steps on the court the first time. The degenerate xenophobes bear their virtual white sheets in the comfortable anonymity or ignorant ignominy of cyberspace. There are no bouncers online, no bartenders with the ability to cut off the flow of alcohol. But sports are the last collective viewing experience, with the possible exception of the Oscars. With the advent of PVRs and streaming video you can watch Scandal whenever you please, but the sport still requires a live audience. No one wants to watch the game later. Even if youre stuck at work, on a plane, or at your boyfriends sisters third intervention, you can tune in, not miss a shot, a goal, a fight, or a one of those once-in-a-lifetime moments that only sport can provide. In 2010 when the Habs made their magical run to the Conference Finals, one of us couldnt make it to Copa to watch the game. Jon was stuck in a hotel room in Vancouver, watching it on his own. There was no thread then. We didnt all own smartphones. No one said "blogoshpere". The Jets were still the Thrashers. Maybe two of us were on Twitter. So as the bar counted down the minutes of Game 7 of an improbable 5-2 Habs win and an improbable series upset over the heavily-favoured Penguins, I called Jon and placed my flip phone open in the middle of our table. He listened as we sung "Olé, Olé, Olé", as we cheered and piled into the streets, as we mocked Sidney Crosby. Strangers would come pick up the phone and speak to him in English and French about the game, about the city, and about the Habs and dreams of 1993. That night was a microcosm of how we watch the games now, the birth of how fandom and friendship defies distance in a digital age. It was a living analogy of how in four short years the experience of watching sports would change. Not all for the better, of course. But Ill put up with a few egotistical bloggers, the occasional Twitter tantrum, and the death of the bar argument if it means I can watch sports the way I want, from wherever I am, with the people I love. With more than one in four people in England doing less than 30 minutes of exercise a week, the Government wants sport to do more to tackle diabetes, obesity and other public health issues. Sport England will now spend 25 per cent of its annual budget, about £60m, on schemes specifically targeted at the inactive.Since we launched the campaign after the Olympics, weve got 1.6m more people playing sport but what we want to do now is to widen that number, Sport England chief executive Jennie Price told Sky Sports News HQ.We want to focus on those people for whom sport really isnt on their radar. Its an interesting challenge and we have some ideas of what will make a difference; it varies for different people. We have some great projects where, for example, trainers have helped women who had never run any distance, to run a half-marathon, so we know it can be done.Investing in people is a particularly good way to do it. Inactivity can happen to anybody of any age and it tends to come when something changes in your routine.ddddddddddddWere really interested in children and young people having an interest in sport at a young age because it means they go back to it as adults. The initiative represents a major shift in focus for the agency, as it has spent much of the last decade handing over big cheques to sports national governing bodies (NGBs) for them to spend on projects aimed at getting already-active people to play more organised sport. But figures for sports participation - on a broadly upwards trajectory since London won the bid for the 2012 Olympics in 2005 - have stalled in recent years, prompting many to suggest it is time for a rethink.Price said Sport England would still continue to invest in organised sport via NGBs but the new push on inactivity would inevitably mean a bit less money for sports core market. Garnett did not play a second

Russias Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov are holding a convincing lead in pairs figure skating going into Wednesdays free skate, winning the short program handily with a final score of 84.17. The clear favourite to win the gold medal in pairs on Wednesday, the duo skated a near-perfect routine in front of a wildly supportive hometown crowd. Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy from Germany, also looking strong in their short program, came in second with a score of 79.64. The duo performed a routine inspired by the Pink Panther. "We wanted to show that it was easy. We skated it for the fans," Savchenko says. "When youre having fun doing your routine and the audience goes with it, it just makes you feel good and less nervous." Szolkowy says that "we had a good feeling, indeed the most important thing was to skate clean. "Were glad that we did all our elements since we want to fight for the gold. The points dont matter for now. Lets see what comes out in the end." Third-place went to another Russian duo of Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov, scoring 75.21. on their routine. All three Canadian pairs also advanced to Wednesdays free skate finale. Meagan Duhamel of St-Leonard, Que., and Eric Radford of Toronto finished their short program as the highest ranking Canadians of the night, scoring 72.21 and finishing in fifth place. The duo enjoyed a solid routine with only a minor mistake on a triple lutz spin. Duhamel says it wasnt easy for her and Radford to skate right after eventual third-place finishers Stolbova and Klimov. "It was very difficult to skate after the hometown team. It sounds like a hockey game out there," Duhamel says. "We made some minor mistakes, but Im proud of what we were able to do in that circumstance." "We want a medal really bad, but for us skating the free skate of a lifetime would be worth more than gold, Duhamel says. Radford, who composed the pairs short program song in tribute to his late coach Paul Wirtz, says he "enjoyed every minute" of his short program experience. "Being out there, every moment is an amazing and unforgettable memory." Kirsten Moore-Towers of St. Catherines, Ont., and Dylan Moscovitch of Toronto placed sixth in their short program, scoring 70.92. The couple skated a solid routine as the final performers of the evening. Moore-Towers says that she wasnt nervous heading out onto the ice. "I think the real win tonight was how comfortable we were out there." Moscovitch says that before the couple performed their short program routine, he told Moore-Towers to "leave everything we have on the floor, lets just leave it all out on the ice." "We had a lot of fun out there," Moscovitch says. Paige Lawrence of Kennedy, Sask., and Rudi Swiegers of Virden, Man., in their first Olympics, skated to a score of 58.97. The couples training has been hampered all season by injuries, with Lawrence saying she is about "80 per cent good" in her recovery from a leg injury. Lawrence touched down twice during the couples routine, which led to their 13th place finish. His post-game pep talk will "remain in-house", which usually means it was R-rated in nature. Did this feel like a win, Amir Johnson was asked after it was all said and done. "Of course," he exclaimed, taking issue with the question. "What? Yes! Did I check the box score wrong? We definitely won." "Does it feel like a win? What?" The box score read 115-113, a pivotal win for the Raptors, who took a 3-2 series lead Wednesday and now sit on the cusp of advancing to the Conference Semifinals, but you wouldnt know if from taking in the head coachs post-game discourse. "You wouldnt want to hear it," Casey said, asked about his emotions as his team squandered a 26-point lead in allowing the Nets to score 44 during a fourth-quarter collapse that was very nearly fatal. "We just didnt play smart. They are a very veteran team, they are going to take advantage of the mistakes you make. We wrote the book on the mistakes in the fourth quarter." "Every mistake that you could think about, we made in the fourth quarter." Just about. The Raptors lead was 22 going into the final frame before their previously spotless performance began to unravel in a hurry. With a lineup of Deron Williams, Joe Johnson and reserves Andray Blatche, Mirza Teletovic and Alan Anderson for all but eight seconds in the quarter, the Nets hit 13 of their 21 shots, including five of nine attempts from three-point range. They got into the paint and to the line at will, putting on a clinic offensively. Veterans Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett did not play a second. With just over three minutes remaining, Torontos nightmare became reality. The sellout crowd that had rocked the building all night, the mob of white-shirted Raptor zealots that shouted "Broooook-lyn" minutes earlier - mimicking a chant made famous at Nets home games - they went dead silent. The Nets Johnson drained a three to tie the game and Toronto was on the ropes. Visions of their franchise-worst 27-point collapse in a December loss to Golden State flashed through everyones mind. Infamous Raptors losses of the oh-so-painful past, the beloved Maple Leafs and their tragic Game 7 demise. The city has seen it all. So how would this team let them down? Toronto led by five with nine seconds left, a semi-comfortable scenario provided they refrain from doing something uncommonly foolish. Just dont give up a three or commit a foul. Naturally, they did both. As Williams swung the ball to Anderson in the corner, the Raptors Johnson lunged at him, committing his sixth foul and surrendering the rare four-point play, Brooklyns second of the quarter. With six second to go, the Raptors now up by three, Casey opted to play it safe and send Blatche to the line for two shots. The right call. Intentionally missing the second free throw, Blatche was able to secure his own rebound before letting the Raptors off the hook in tossing the ball away. "We cant livve that way," said an irate Casey after the game.dddddddddddd "We cant make this many mental mistakes." Buzzer sounds and the Raptors win. The Raptors win? They had mucked it up in just about every way you could imagine, like a greatest hits of Raptor blunders, but they pulled it out. If that seems out of character with what weve come to expect from this franchise, so be it. Isnt that just the perfect representation of a season, an improbably playoff run that defies all semblance of logic? "We made some boneheaded mistakes," Johnson admitted, "but we finished off the game and thats all that really matters." This is a different team producing different results and a point guard who has a lot to do with that change in fortune. "Honestly, hes a hell of player, man," DeMar DeRozan said of Kyle Lowry, who scored 36 points, a playoff career-high, also matching the most hes ever scored in an NBA game. "Hes just a dog. He makes you want to bring your A-game every single night because you know hes going to lay it out there with them." With DeRozan blanketed by multiple defenders all night, Lowry took over. Tied with a minute left, Lowry hit the biggest shot of the night, a step-back three-pointer, followed by another dagger from inside the paint on the subsequent possession. "Sometimes it calls for that situation," said the point guard. "Usually its [DeRozan] doing that but tonight the way they played him it gave me an opportunity to get to the basket and get some shots off down the stretch. Our teammates count on me and him to make the right decisions, make the big plays and tonight it was fortunate enough they were guarding him tightly and I got it going a little bit." Lowry wouldnt let his team lose, willing them to their most important victory of the campaign, and no one seems the least bit surprised, nor should they. "Every time hes out there on the floor Im going to give it my best effort," DeRozan added, "because I know hes going to do the same." "We know theres not going to be no big blowouts either way because both teams are going to fight until the end," he continued. "It just shows you how much weve matured over the season and understanding what we have to do to stay in games and closeout games." DeRozan became the first Raptors player to reach the 20-point plateau in four straight playoff games since Vince Carter in 2001, scoring 23 on Wednesday thanks in large part to another impressive showing from the free throw line, where he was 12-for-13. For the first time in nearly 13 years that Raptors have taken the advantage in a playoff series, now they look to close it out in Brooklyn on Friday. "Were happy we won today but weve got to do a better job Friday," said Jonas Valanciunas, who had 16 points and six rebounds Wednesday. "Were here, were excited about being in the playofffs, somewhere we havent been before, a young team, expecting mistakes," Casey said. "Weve got to crack the whip and learn from it. This is a hell of a time to start learning, going into Game 6 of the playoffs." PIESTANY, Slovakia - Dylan Strome scored a hat trick as Canada defeated the United States 11-5 on Friday to advance to the final of the under-18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup. Travis Konecny added a pair of goals while Jansen Harkins, Mathew Barzal, Lawson Crouse, Adam Musil, Mitchell Stephens and Tyler Soy added singles for Canada, which reached double digits in goals in a summer under-18 game for the first time since 2000. I thought our guys played hard and we were ready to go off the hop, said head coach Jody Hull. Canada will play the co-host Czech Republic in Saturdays final at Breclav. The Czechs defeated Sweden 4-3 in the late semifinal. Weve got to go out and play our game, Hull said. If we can go out and play our game for 60 minutes, thats going to be the key. Youve got to be ready for anything. So were just going to enjoy this tonight and be focused and ready to go tomorrow. All but two of Canadas 18 skaters recorded at least a point in the blowout victory and Zach Sawchenko made 24 saves. Thomas Novak scored twice for the Americans. Brock Boeser, Tanner Laczynski and Ryan Moore had the other goals. Canada finished first in Group B in preliminary round play with a 3-0 record while the Czechs led Group A at 3-0. Sweden and the United States will play for the bronze medal on Saturday. Canada has won this tournament six years in a row, and 18 of the past 23 times since it began in 1991. They just dont know if hell be on the field Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Cowboys (6-3) have lost two straight after going on a six-game winning streak. Romo hurt his back for the third time in the last 18 months two weeks ago, and then watched as backup Brandon Weeden struggled to get the offence going in another loss last Sunday.Romo practiced Thursday for the first time since arriving in London, and said his back was sore but getting better. You got to kind of test it out and see what you can do. You got to push it, Romo said, sounding hopeful of playing against the Jaguars (1-8) on Sunday. At the same time, you got to understand your body and be smart with it.Romo is 69-47 in the regular season as Dallas starting quarterback. Weeden is 0-1.Dallas coach Jason Garrett said the team has been preparing as usual, even though the Cowboys dont quite know who will be taking the snaps at Wembley Stadium in the last of three regular-season NFL games in London this year.On the opposite side, Jacksonville is doing the same thing. Each week, we have to prepare for both quarterbacks, Jaguars coach Gus Bradley said. In our mindset, we anticipate seeing Tony, but well be ready for both. Some other things to consider for Cowboys-Jaguars:WHO WILL DECIDE: Romo needed to do some improving to show he is healthy enough to make the start. Thats something that the Cowboys medical team needs to decide before Garrett — or Romo, for that matter, — gets his say.Romos attitude is definitely leaning toward wanting to play.If you love the game, youll always try to get on the field, Romo said.
