in the hunt for several wins

TORONTO - Just days after locking up star point guard Kyle Lowry, the teams top offseason priority, the Raptors are following suit with restricted free agent forward Patrick Patterson. Although the deal cannot be made official until the free agent moratorium period is lifted on July 10, Patterson has agreed to a three-year, $18 million extension to remain in Toronto, sources confirm to TSN.ca Friday afternoon. Patterson, 25, was acquired in the seven-player deal that sent Rudy Gay to Sacramento in December and played a significant role in the Raptors resurgence last year. One of the leagues premier reserves at his position following the trade, the fourth-year forward appeared in 48 games for Toronto, starting seven, and averaging 9.1 points, 5.1 rebounds while shooting 48 per cent from the field and 41 per cent from three-point range. As a restricted free agent, the Raptors could have matched any offer Patterson received on the open market but retaining him was a priority for general manager Masai Ujiri and something he moved on quickly after agreeing to terms with Lowry late Wednesday night. Patterson figured to draw a fair amount of interest from teams around the league after jumpstarting his young career in Toronto. Although he struggled to begin the year with the Kings, Patterson emerged as a versatile, two-way player that can stretch the floor at the power forward position. He became especially valuable as starter Amir Johnson began to wear down, battling a myriad of injuries late in the season. Patterson, often the first player off the bench last year, is expected to have a bigger role with the Raptors in 2014-15 and beyond. Toronto had a record of 42-22 following the early-season trade that made Patterson a Raptor, finishing the campaign with a franchise-best 48 wins and division title en route to a seven-game, first round defeat in the playoffs. Shortly after extending the contract of head coach Dwane Casey in May, Ujiri expressed his desire to keep his team, one that exceeded all expectations a year ago, together going forward. "As far as Im concerned, keeping our core group going forward, with Kyle Lowry, Greivis Vasquez and Patterson and Nando, those guys are priorities for us," the Raptors GM had said. "And if you want to build, I think a team where we have young players, we have to build continuity. When free agency comes, we have to attack our guys first." With that goal in mind the next order of business will be retaining Vasquez, also a restricted free agent, expected to be done soon. In an effort to create the cap space required to complete a deal with the back-up point guard and perhaps add another piece while maintaining future flexibility and avoiding luxury tax penalties, the Raptors have also traded veteran sharpshooter Steve Novak to the Utah Jazz, reports Yahoo Sports. Toronto will send a future second-round selection to the Jazz as a sweetener and take back the non-guarantted contract of guard Diante Garrett, who will be immediately waived, in order to unload the $7.2 million Novak is owed over the next two years. After the Lowry and Patterson signings are made official and assuming guards Julyan Stone and Dwight Buycks are also waived (their deals are non-guaranteed if voided before July 7 and July 22 respectively), the Raptors will have roughly $62 million committed to 10 players under contract for next season, not including Vasquez, free agent guard Nando De Colo and rookies Bruno Caboclo, Lucas Nogueira or DeAndre Daniels. Even after signing their rookies and inking Vasquez to a new deal, the Raptors should be able to use most of their mid-level exception to address another need on the roster and remain under the salary cap. Aided by the trade of Novak, Toronto should have max or near max cap space next summer, with only Lowry, Patterson, DeMar DeRozan, Jonas Valanciunas, Terrence Ross and this years rookies on their books for the 2015-16 season. Novak was acquired in the trade that sent Andrea Bargnani to New York a year ago. The 31-year-old forward and three-point shooting specialist averaged 3.3 points in 54 games with the Raptors last season, his eighth in the NBA. Alex Tuch Golden Knights Jersey . But last years runner-up Jarkko Nieminen crashed out despite winning the first set against Denis Istomin. Istomin fired 10 aces and won 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-2 to even his career record against Nieminen at 3-3. Jonathan Marchessault Jersey . - Alex Dostie scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the Gatineau Olympiques to a 5-3 victory over the Drummondville Voltigeurs in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action on Sunday. http://www.goldenknightsproshop.com/auth...knights-jersey/. The two were in the batting cage moments before game time. Bautista was taking final warm up cuts. Pillar was hitting soft toss. The one-time utility player turned All-Star pulled aside the clubs young, fourth outfielder and offered him some advice. Teemu Pulkkinen Jersey . JOHNS, N. Deryk Engelland Jersey . He is nigh unstoppable against the leagues worst. The 31-year-old dangerman set up two goals and scored two himself as Toronto FC rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the slumping Houston Dynamo 4-2 on Saturday night.LONG POND, Pa. - Matt Kenseth was NASCARs biggest winner in 2013, a dominant run that thrust him into contention for his second championship. He came up just short. Seven wins, no title. Small consolation. Kenseths first year with Joe Gibbs Racing was a smashing success except for winning a championship to bookend with the one he has from 2003. Kenseth found the hard way that wins are nice, but winning it all matters more. Headed into Sundays race at Pocono Raceway, Kenseth is atop the points standings but the only driver in the top nine without at least one checkered flag. NASCAR revamped the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship format this year to add great significance to winning a race in the first 26 before the cutoff. Kenseth would be a lock for the field with a victory. Without one, Kenseth might have to hope he keeps his points lead: The regular-season leader earns a spot even with a winless season. Kenseth has won 13 races the last three years and it seems inevitable hell find his way in Victory Lane soon enough. He has never won at Pocono, but has two career wins at next weeks track (Michigan) and hes won three times at Bristol (Aug. 23). Hed surrender the lead for taking the No. 20 Toyota for a spin in Victory Lane soon. "Youd rather have a win at this time of year than be the points leader," he said. "Its definitely different. We knew it was a radical change, but youre sitting here because youre the points leader but you open up the paper and they dont have you in the top-10. Its a little bit confusing at times. So yeah, hopefully we can get a win." Kenseth joins the rest of the field in trying to race his way past Jimmie Johnson. The six-time champion iis coming off back-to-back victories in the Coca-Cola 600 and at Dover International Speedway and will try to win three straight for the first time since 2007.dddddddddddd. Steady as always, Kenseth has been in the hunt for several wins. He just cant find that one edge that will get him one. He has five top-five finishes and 10 top-10s in 13 races for a 9.2 average finish. Hes finished third in each of the last two races. "People always ask about changing your strategies or trying harder or doing this or doing that, but if it was that easy, youd win every week," he said "Ive never not wanted to win. If there was a way to force wins, Id force it every week." With half the season left before the Chase field is set, Kenseth isnt worried too much about his winless season. Former champion Tony Stewart also is winless. So are Kasey Kahne, Clint Bowyer and Ryan Newman, on the outside of the Chase and in a lot worse shape. "I think there has been a touch of bad luck and then we just havent put together full races," Kahne said. "Weve had great practices over the last month, maybe a little more than that. Weve been really good in practice; great at times during the race, but we havent put together the full race." Kenseth isnt quite sure why the No. 20 has yet to come close to matching last seasons success. "If we knew exactly that, it would be a lot easier to fix," he said. "Theres been times you get pretty good car balance, but you havent had the speed. You always try to look over everything and look over how you get your vehicles setup better, how you can get your aero setup better, how you can get your engines better." COMMERCE CITY, Colo. -- Deshorn Brown scored twice, the first coming 13 seconds into the game, and the Colorado Rapids beat the undermanned Seattle Sounders 5-1 Saturday night. Browns initial goal set the record for the quickest in franchise history. Dwayne De Rosario holds the MLS mark with his score 11 seconds in for San Jose against Dallas on Sept. 27, 2003. "Of course we wanted to start quickly," Brown said. "Thats why we wanted to run that play, one we had worked hard often in practice." On the opening score, Gabriel Torres gained control of the ball along the west sideline and found Brown alone. Brown made several strides before releasing a low driving shot that got past goalkeeper Michael Gspurnings desperation dive. "I ran hard to a spot," Brown said. "The ball came my way and I just took it." Dillon Powers, Gabriel Torres and Drew Moor added goals for Colorado (13-9-9). The Rapids, 4-2-0 over their last six games, moved into third place ahead of idle Los Angeles in the Western Conference. "We had a start teams can only dream of," Colorado coach Oscar Pareja said. "You can work towards a great start, expect them, but you can only dream the way we started." Eddie Johnson scored for Seattle (15-9-6). The Sounders were 1-0-1 in the first two meetings and dropped to 9-2-2 all-time against Colorado. "Weve got to be ready to play from the beginning," Seattle coach Sigi Schmid said. "You cant give up a goal 13 seconds into a game. "We cant just walk on the field and assume you are going to win the game," Schmid added. The Sounders were without leading scorer Obaemi Martins (hip), midfielder Clint Dempsey (hamstring) and defenders Djimi Traore (hamstring) and Leo Gonzalez (hip/groin). The Rapids kept up the pressure. Vincente Sanchez quickly put a corner kick in play and Powers sent a header into the back of the net in the 10th minute. Brown scored again in the 31st after Sanchez and Hendry Thomas moved the ball ahead to Brown. Brown beat off pressure from Seattle defender DeAndre Yedlin and beat Gspurning just inside the left post. Moor made it 4-0 off Sanchezs corner kick in the 41st. Johnson had Seattles lone scoring chance when his shot grazed the crossbar in the ninth minute. The Sounders picked up the pressure after intermission. MADRID, Spain -- Cristiano Ronaldo scored two goals as Real Madrid completed its Champions League last 16 thrashing of Schalke with a 3-1 victory on Tuesday. Madrid breezed into the quarterfinals after winning 9-2 on aggregate following its 6-1 first-leg victory in Germany. The Spanish leaders progress was never in doubt as coach Carlo Ancelotti rotated his squad, with Gareth Bale forced off the bench early when Madrid forward Jese Rodriguez injured his right knee two minutes in at the Santiago Bernabeu. Bale played a key role in the victory, feeding Ronaldo for the 21st-minute opener before Schalke defender Tim Hoogland equalized from a shot deflected beyond Iker Casillas. Ronaldo scored his 13th goal of the competition with an individual effort before Alvaro Morata struck Madrids third from Bales pass in the 75th. The victory extended Madrids unbeaten run to 31 games in all competitions ahead of Sundays Spanish league showdown with Barcelona. Also Tuesday, Chelsea beat Galatasaray 2-0 to reach the quarterfinals with a 3-1 aggregate victory, keeping alive the possibility of Madrid coming up against former coach Jose Mourinho. "I think all of the best teams have won their series, although there can be some surprises," Ancelotti said, with the quarterfinals draw coming on Friday. Ancellotti said Jese had ruptured his cruciate ligament, leaving him unlikely to return this season.dddddddddddd. Bale swiftly added to the attack as Morata threaded a ball onto his run into the area and the Welshman picked out the inrushing Ronaldo to beat Schalke goalkeeper Ralf Fahrmann. Madrids intensity soon slackened, and the visitors took advantage of the dip in the 31st as Julian Drexler started a break that eventually finished with Hooglands shot from outside the area deflecting off Sergio Ramos foot around goalie Iker Casillas. "The team reacted well, the performance was good," Schalke coach Jens Keller said through a translator. "But the minute Real Madrid has an opportunity, they can convert it into goal." Bale lost control at the halfway line in the 74th but Ronaldo skipped onto the loose ball and headed straight for Schalkes goal, twisting and turning defender Joel Matip before closing the run with a clinical finish from the edge of the area. Ronaldo didnt look done as he found the crossbar in the ensuing minute, with the rebound falling to Bale to unselfishly pass back for Morata to net after the Madrid striker had missed a number of early scoring chances. Ronaldo, who then found the post after that, moved within one goal of the record 14 scored by Lionel Messi of Barcelona and Jose Altafini of AC Milan in a single campaign of Europes top-tier competition. Ronaldo also equaled club great Ferenc Puskas mark of 242 goals with his brace. TSN Hockey Insiders Bob McKenzie, Darren Dreger and Pierre LeBrun have the latest on Ryan Keslers situation in Vancouver, the coaching vacancies around the league, if the first overall pick will move, and more. How does Jim Bennings selection as GM in Vancouver, and who he selects as head coach, affect the Ryan Kesler situation? Darren Dreger: Ryan Kesler hasnt changed his mind. He wants a fresh start and to move on from Vancouver; he met with Benning earlier this week to talk about that. Its believed that Kesler still has six teams on his list that hes willing to be traded to. And we think that Philadelphia and Anaheim are among those. Pierre LeBrun: The asking price remains high, as it should for a guy that only has a $5 million cap hit for two more years. The Canucks dont just want futures here, they want a player that can help them now, preferably a centre. Bob McKenzie: With Kesler on the marketplace right now, thats bad news for the Ottawa Senators, who have been trying to trade Jason Spezza, preferably before the draft. With Kesler out there, thats a centre that most teams will target before they go after Spezza. LeBrun: It might get even more interesting if Joe Thornton or Patrick Marleau are on the market. Right now thats not the case but the Sharks have made it known theyre rebuilding. What does that mean for a veteran like Thornton – does he want to be on a rebuilding team? That remains to be seen. Why Jim Rutherford in Pittsburgh? And who might he hire to replace the fired Dan Bylsma? McKenzie: They like Rutherfords experience and they also like the fact that at this point in his career Rutherford is happy to take a 2-3 year transition phase and be able to turn the reigns over to an assistant like Jason Botterill, Bill Guerin or Tom Fitzgerald. In terms of who the coach will be, Ill say this: if Paul Maurice hadnt signed on long-term with the Winnipeg Jets, those two – the Lone Ranger and Tonto – might have ridden again, with Rutherford obviously having an affinity for Maurice. I think whoever he gets, it has got to be a guy who has some cache, whos got a name, and whos been a head coach. Because when that guy walks into that dressing room, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin have got to sit up and take notice. Give me an update on the other three coaching vacancies. Dreger: Dale Tallon has interviewed as many as 10 candidates for the vacancy in Florida. Hes hoping to get the list down to 5-6 as early as next week and start the process of second interviews. LeBrun: With Rutherfords old team in Carolina, Ron Francis were told has interviewed close to 10 candidates and hes not done. He wants a crack at Ulf Samuelsson, his old teammate, on the New York Rangers staff. He has to wait for the Stanley Cup Final to end. Bill Peters is another candidate; hes interviewed Jacques Martin; and maybe John Stevens from the Los Angeles Kings is in the mix as well. McKenzie: Theres been no news coming out of Vancouver on the coaching front for an obvious reason. We believe the top candidates are still coaching and not available to be interviewed. Thatd be Stevens with the Kings, and Willie Desjardins, whos currently coaching in the American Hockey League Championship and is another strong candidate in Vancouver. The first overall draft pick has only been traded four times. Will it be a fifth this year? Dreger: Its definitely in play and I know the Panthers have at least one solid offer, but the expectation is things will heat up in the days ahead. Is Martin Brodeur prepared to leave New Jersey? LeBrun: I spoke to Brodeur today and he said mentally hes ready to leave New Jersey. He hasnt totally closed the door on the Devils – he says “Ill be a Devil for life” – but he will go to July 1 and see if theres a fit. Hes ready to play one more year and hes ready to play in another uniform. McKenzie: And theres another free agent we should keep our eye on who most people havent heard of: a 22-year-old Czech by the name of Jiri Sekac. He went through the NHL Drafts and never got picked up. He was once cut by the Peterborough Petes but he had a strong year in the KHL playing for the Prague team. Right now he has more than a dozen firm offers on a max entry-level deal for two years. Hes expected over the next couple of days to make up his mind as to which team. This is a guy who is in great demand. Hes a 62, 190 pound left winger who many believe is ready to step in NHL-ready. Anders Bjork Jersey . - The New York Rangers have momentum, a unified locker room and Henrik Lundqvist. Danton Heinen Jersey . According to TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie, the deal will pay Schenn $2.25 million in the first year and $2.75 million in the second year. In 82 games with the Flyers in 2013-14, Schenn scored 20 goals and added 21 assists. Frank Vatrano Jersey . He made that dream a reality Wednesday night. Olt, who grew up in Branford, Connecticut, attended UConn and made a nearly 2 1-2 hour trek to Boston a handful of times to watch the Red Sox, belted a two-run homer, one of four hit by Cubs in a 16-9 rout that completed a three-game interleague series sweep. Riley Nash Jersey .com) - The St.MINNEAPOLIS -- Hours after reversing course and benching Adrian Peterson indefinitely, Minnesota Vikings owner Zygi Wilf said Wednesday that the team "made a mistake" in bringing back their superstar running back following his indictment on a felony child-abuse charge in Texas. "We made a mistake and we need to get this right," he said at a crowded news conference. "It is important to always listen to our fans and the community and our sponsors. Our goal is always to make the decision we feel is right for the Minnesota Vikings ... We want to be sure we get this right." Wilf and his co-owner brother, Mark Wilf, announced their decision around 2 a.m. Eastern after concluding it was best for the Vikings and for Peterson, their All-Pro workhorse who has played his entire NFL career with Minnesota and is accused of injuring his 4-year-old son by spanking him with a wooden switch earlier this year. The organization put Peterson on the exempt-commissioners permission list, meaning he is off the active roster while he deals with his legal affairs. General manager Rick Spielman would not put a timeframe on when Peterson might be back. "Until these legal matters are resolved, that he will remain on this exemption list," he said. A day-and-a-half earlier, the Vikings said Peterson would rejoin the team after missing Sundays loss to New England. The backlash to that announcement was significant. The Vikings had at least one major sponsorship suspended. Several prominent NFL advertisers, including Anheuser-Busch, expressed concern about the leagues recent off-the-field problems, which include former Ravens running back Ray Rice and the indictment of Peterson. The governor was critical. Fans were angry. Castrol Motor Oil, Special Olympics Minnesota and Mylan Inc. all severed ties with Peterson. Twin Cities area Nike stores pulled Petersons jerseys from its shelves and the team cancelled an appearance at a childrens home. Mark Wilf dismissed the suggestion that Peterson was barred strictly because of sponsor concerns. "Absolutely not," he said. "We value our partners, our sponsors, our community and especially our fans. In the end, it really is about getting it right. We made a mistake." Petersons agent, Ben Dogra, said the decision was "the best possible outcome given the circumstances." "Adrian understands the gravity of the situation and this enables him to take care of his personal situation," Dogra told The Associated Press. "We fully support Adrian and he looks forward to watching his teammates and coaches being successful during his absence." The NFL Players Association said it had worked with Peterson and the team to resolve "this unique situation.dddddddddddd "Adrian Peterson made a decision to take a voluntary leave with pay to take care of his personal and legal issues," the union said. "We support this decision and hope the best for him and his family." Peterson has an Oct. 8 court appearance scheduled in Montgomery County, outside of Houston, on a felony charge of injury to a child. Peterson has taken responsibility for the incident, insisting he meant no harm and alluding to similar punishment he endured from his parents while growing up in Palestine, Texas. Peterson hasnt appeared publicly since the grand jury indictment, but in a statement this week he said hes met with a psychologist and acknowledged there are "alternative ways of disciplining a child that may be more appropriate." The case is expected to take several months to proceed through the court system, so the possibility of Peterson playing again in 2014 appears slim. His future with the Vikings is another matter. He turns 30 next year and will continue to carry a huge salary cap hit in 2015. The Vikings held Peterson out of the 30-7 loss to New England on Sunday to let the situation simmer. Then on Monday they announced Peterson would rejoin the team and play this weekend at New Orleans. But the Radisson hotel chain suspended its sponsorship with the Vikings and Papa Johns pizza considered doing the same. Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton, who spearheaded an effort to secure $477 million in public money to help build the team a new stadium, and Sen. Al Franken were among the many who called for the Vikings to reconsider their position. The Vikings said they had deliberations with the NFL over the previous two days. They said they informed the league they were revisiting the original decision. Executives were at the teams Winter Park headquarters late into the night Tuesday, discussing how to respond to the avalanche of criticism. It explained the early-morning announcement. "There were a lot of people discussing this, working through it, a lot of different parties in this," Mark Wilf said. "We felt once we get it right, to get it out when we got it right." Peterson has been the face of the franchise since he was drafted in 2007, one of the most popular and marketable stars in the NFL whose All Day Foundation charity is devoted to helping children. But the foundations website was shuttered Tuesday, at one point posting a message that it "will re-engage after Adrian, his family, and staff have reflected on how the current situation impacts the direction for Adrians philanthropy." FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Tom Brady completed pass after pass, 11 in a row to start the game. So much for his injured left knee. Two days after spraining it, the New England star was perfect before throwing an incompletion on his last pass in the Patriots 25-21 exhibition victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Friday night. He also threw his first touchdown to new top wide receiver Danny Amendola on his first series and left after the second. "Toms like a coach out there on the field," Amendola said. "He knows every intricacy of the offence. He helps young guys out a lot. Hes a leader." Brady, who bypassed waiting reporters after Thursdays joint walkthrough with the Buccaneers (0-2), did it again after his outstanding performance. He left the locker room quickly without holding his usual postgame news conference and the team offered no explanation. An MRI on his left knee had been negative and he participated fully in the walkthrough. Patriots coach Bill Belichick shrugged off an opportunity to make his first comments about his reaction to the play Wednesday when left tackle Nate Solder fell back into Brady, knocking him to the ground, after being shoved by defensive end Adrian Clayborn. "Were so far past that," he said. "Were way beyond that." Bradys nearly perfect performance for the Patriots (2-0) proved that. "He sure looked good, but we messed up some things," Tampa Bay coach Greg Schiano said. "Even if you play great against Tom Brady hell complete (passes)." Bucs quarterback Josh Freeman also started and worked two possessions but had a much rougher time against the team theyll face in the third game of the regular season. He was sacked three times and completed only two of three passes before rookie Mike Glennon took over. "We just have to find a way to overcome adversity," Freeman said. "We battled to the end." Amendola, signed as a free agent from St. Louis, caught six passes for 71 yards, including a 26-yard touchdown on the games first series. Brady completed all eight of his passes for 72 yards, even adding a 2-point conversion pass to rookie tight end Zach Sudfeld after Amendolas touchdown. Then Brady connected on his first three throws on his next possession, reaching 107 yards passing for the night, before missing Amendola on third-and-7. Brady has played four series in two games, starting with a 31-22 win over Philadelphia, and completed 18 of 20 passes for 172 yards. Ryan Mallett replaced him and threw a 22-yard touchdown to Sudfeld, a free agent having an outstanding training camp. With Rob Gronkowski sidelined after off-season back surgery and Aaron Hernandez jailed on a murder charge, Sudfeld has an inside track on a roster spot. "Hes worked hard to learn our offence, a little different than what they did at Nevada," Belichick said. "Hes got to learn how to be an on-the-line tight end, but hes making progress. Hes got a long way to go." Mallett completed 12 of 20 passes for 137 yards against the club that allowed the most yards passing in the NFL last season then gave way to Tim Tebow on the Patriots first series of the third quarter. Tebow continued to struggle, completing one of seven passes for minus-1 yard and an interception. "It was definitely something I shouldnt have thrown," he said. "You want to do your best and play to the best of your ability and have it all go right, and sometimes it doesnt. You just have to keep going." Tebow also ran six times for 30 yards. Freeman was under pressure from the start eight days after playing well in a 44-16 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. He was sacked by Brandon Spikes on Tampa Bays first offensive play, then by Chandler Jones and Spikes on the second series. Eight plays for Freeman, three of them sacks. The Patriots waited until Glennons third play to sack him when Rob Ninkovich tackled him for a 6-yard loss. But on the Bucs next series, the third-round draft pick from North Carolina State threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Ogletree as they cut the lead to 11-7. Glennon completed 12 of 22 passes for 121 yards and threw another touchdown pass, 1-yard to David Douglas. New Englands defence made another big play against Glennon when rookie Logan Ryan returned an interception 53 yards for a touchdown with 8:47 left in the third quarter. With New England up 25-18, Tebows overthrown pass was intercepted by Mason Robinson. The Bucs scored on Derek Dimkes second field goal, a 23-yarder. SWANSEA, Wales - Swansea scored twice in less than three minutes to rally to a 2-1 victory over Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday, with substitute Bafetimbi Gomis grabbing the winner barely 90 seconds after coming on.A listless game played in driving rain in south Wales was sparked into life by Alexis Sanchezs close-range finish in the 63rd minute, the Chile forward scoring for the fourth straight league game.Gylfi Sigurdsson curled home a stunning free kick to equalize for Swansea in the 75th and Gomis completed the hosts recovery by rising high to head home a pin-point cross from Jefferson Montero, who exploited the right side of Arsenals fragile defence all game. The defeat ended a miserable week for Arsenal, which surrendered a 3-0 lead to draw 3-3 against Anderlecht in the Champions League on Tuesday. Its difficult to explain how we lost the lead, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. We were in control. We lost some decisive challenges in the middle of the park in the last 20 minutes. When we were 1-0, we lacked some spark and killer instinct. With its brittle defence and an increasing reliance on Sanchezs goals, Arsenal looks to have little hope of catching unbeaten leader Chelsea, which is 12 points ahead of its London rival after just 11 games.Sixth-placed Arsenal hasnt beaten a side outside the bottom seven this season.Sanchez steered home a finish from eight meters at the end of a sweeping counter-attack in the 63rd minute, extending his prolific form that has seen him score six goals in his last four games in all competitions. He now has 12 goals overall in his first season with Arsenal.Swansea came fighting back and Arsenal could not deal with the hosts intensity.Sigurdsson, Swanseas best player this season, whipped a free kick over the wall and beyond goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, at which point manager Garry Monk threw on Gomis. One of the strikers first touches was to rise above Nacho Monreal — a left back playing in central defence — and meet Monteros cross with a header that found the bottom corner. We talked about belief before the game, about how good we have been and how good we can be, Monk said. James Harden nearly contributed a triple-double, scoring 18 with 10 assists and seven rebounds, and Trevor Ariza finished with 20 points in the win. Second half we did a great job of coming out with some defensive intensity, Harden said. Alec Burks led the Jazz with 18 points, while Derrick Favors deposited 16 points with seven rebounds and Trey Burke added 15 points in the setback. I think we played good as a team, we missed a lot of open shots that we normally make, Favors said. Dante Exum, the No. 5 overall selection in the 2014 NBA Draft, totaled five points with an assist and a steal in just under 10 minutes of action for Utah. The Jazz, who have lost six of their last seven against the Rockets, played tough in Quin Snyders debut as head coachh for the club.dddddddddddd The Rockets built a 75-62 lead late in the third, but Burke scored six points as part of a 10-0 run to close the frame. CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Panthers coach Ron Rivera isnt sure if Greg Hardy will play Sunday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers and that the team hasnt considered releasing the Pro Bowl defensive end who is involved in a domestic violence case. Rivera said Monday that Hardy will continue to practice and attend team meetings, but he wont make a decision on if he plays until later this week. The Panthers plan to continue to gather information in what Rivera said is "a very fluid situation." Hardy was convicted July 15 of assault on a female and communicating threats, after the victim claimed he threw her down on a bed of guns and tossed her into the shower. He is appealing the ruling. Hardy played in Week 1 but Rivera deactivated him just hours before Sundays game against the Detroit Lions, and two days after the coach said Hardy would play. Rivera said Panthers owner Jerry Richardson was involved in the Hardy discussion and the team had some input from the league, but it was his decision to bench him. Hardy made $770,588.23 -- one-seventeenth of his yearly pay -- despite not playing. Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman and his staff are "doing their due diligence in terms of looking at what are options are" going forward, Rivera said. The coach indicated those options included whether to activate or deactivate Hardy on Sunday. He said the team has not considered releasing Hardy and his $13,1 million salary. The Panthers will have to decide by Week 6 how they want to handle Hardys situation. Under the NFL collective bargaining agreement, a team can only deactivate a player for non-injury reasons for a maximum of four games. The same limit is applies if the Panthers were to suspend Hardy for conduct detrimental to the team. Hardys agent Drew Rosenhaus declined to comment on the situation. On Monday, Hardy arrived at the stadium in his white Bentley shortly after noon wearing white shorts and a hooded white sweatshirt and sunglasses. He didnt acknowledge media questions as he strolled into the stadium. The decision to deactivate Hardy last Sunday was a difficult one, Rivera said. "If you play him and you win, then you dont have a conscience; and if you play him and you lose, hes a distraction," Rivera said. Riveras decision to bench Hardy came after the Minnesota Vikings deactivated Adrian Peterson following his indictment for injuring a child. The Vikings released a statement Monday saying that Peterson will play Sunday against New Orleans. The Panthers are trying to be careful not to be reactionary. "That is why we have to sit down and talk about these things," Rivera said. "And we did the same thing (on Sunday). We talked about a lot of things and at the end of the day I had to make a decision that I believe was in the best interest of our football team and for Greg." Hardy was disappointed when informed he wouldnt play against the Lions. Rivera said he allowed Hardy to leave the stadium and return home after notifying him of the move. "I said, Greg are you OK with this? and he said, Coach, I understand," Rivera said. Carolinas defence didnt miss a beat without Hardy, forcing three turnovers and registering four sacks in a 24-7 victory. Hardy, who tied a franchise-record with 15 sacks last season, had four tackles and a sack in the teams regular season opener at Tampa Bay. However, Hardys status changed when the Ravens released Ray Rice and the league suspended him indefinitely last week after a video surfaced of Rice punching his then-fiance. Then later in the week, Peterson was indicted on child abuse charges, adding pressure on the Panthers to deactivate Hardy. Rivera said Sunday that "the climate had changed" in the NFL and that played into his decision to bench Hardy. When asked if the Panthers got it right the first time, Rivera said, "I dont know. What is right? You do the best you can and nobody is infallible. We have to get this issue right and were trying to do the right thing." Panthers centre and team co-captain Ryan Kalil said Monday hes glad hes not had to do Riveras job the last two weeks. "I dont envy having to make those tough decisions," Kalil said. "Those are not easy decisions to make." Kalil also said hes already tired of answering questions about Hardy, but said the best thing he advises younger teammates to do is focus on getting better. "There are countless guys I can name in this league that are just really good people," Kalil said. "My hope is that at some point we can focus on some of those guys. I know these things are the topic right now, but its disappointing that it overshadows a lot of good people." LOUIS -- Theres one preseason game left for Aaron Rodgers, who figures hell play at least a half against Seattle. Guess what hes dying to do? "Id like to score a touchdown, thats kind of the first priority," Rodgers said after the Green Bay Packers settled for field goals off three productive drives in a 19-7 victory over the St. Louis Rams on Saturday night. "But weve had four good drives, four out of four. Weve just got to get more points, weve got to put the ball in the end zone." Rodgers got the Packers (1-1) on the scoreboard for the first time in the preseason. Not that coach Mike McCarthy had been worried about an offence that averaged 27 points last season, or the final score for that matter. McCarthy said his first priority was quality opportunities for players, the second was effective play in all three phases, "and the third priority is winning the game." "If you dont like that, I get that," McCarthy said. "Trust me, I want to win every play, every game, but were a young team." Sam Bradford had only himself to blame for putting up nice numbers, going 8 for 12 for 156 yards, with nothing to show for four possessions. His highlight throw was a 57-yarder that hit Chris Givens in stride to the Packers 4, but Bradford fumbled away the snap on fourth-and-goal from the 1 late in the first quarter with the Rams (0-2) trailing 3-0. "Thats on me. I just missed it," Bradford said. "Ive got to make sure I have the ball before I get out of there. Its unacceptable. "You cant have that happen. Thats what cost us this game." Both Packers starting wide receivers are out with injuries, so Rodgers leaned on tight end Jermichael Finley while going 10 for 12 for 134 yards. All three drives stalled and the Packers had a pair of field goals by Mason Crosby when Rodgers turned the offence over to backup Graham Harrell in the second quarter. The Packers got shut out 17-0 by Arizona in the preseason opener with Rodgers playing just one series. The Rams averted a shutout on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Austin Davis to Nick Johnson in the final minute. The Rams got offensive skill upgrades, tight end Jared Cook and wide receiver Tavon Austin, involved for the first time. Cook had a 37-yard reception, almost all the yards coming after grabbing a low pass from Bradford, and Austin caugght four passes but for just 28 yards.dddddddddddd "When youre part of an offence thats supposed to put up points, those are the things you have to look at," Cook said. "Thats our job and thats what were supposed to be here for. "The fact that we didnt do that is bothersome." Isaiah Pead started at running back for St. Louis, a chance to gain on front-runner Daryl Richardson, but was held to 19 yards on 11 carries. Packers first-round pick Datone Jones, a defensive end, did not dress after injuring an ankle last week. Wide receiver Jordy Nelson is expected back from knee injury in time for the opener and Randall Cobb, who had a team-leading 80 receptions last season, has a biceps injury. Finley caught four passes for 76 yards in the first half. Rookie Eddie Lacy, competing with injured DuJuan Harris for the running back job, had 40 yards on eight carries plus an 11-yard reception by the break. Crosby was 3 for 3, connecting from 34 and 48 yards in the first half on Rodgers series, and adding a 30-yarder in the third quarter that had enough despite getting tipped by the Rams Cody Davis. Tryout Giorgio Tavecchio missed a 49-yard attempt in the first quarter and hit a 38-yarder near the end of the half for a 9-0 lead. The Rams stalled at the Green Bay 38 on their opening drive when Bradford hit Austin for a 3-yard gain on fourth-and-5 and Greg Zuerlein missed a 50-yard field goal attempt on Bradfords other possession. Bradford threw a touchdown pass in the preseason opener, a 27-19 loss at Cleveland. Johnny Jolly made big plays on two interceptions against Kellen Clemens in the third quarter, deflecting a pass at the line that was intercepted by Jarrett Bush to set up a field goal, and then picking off Clemens in the end zone. The latter took punt returner Brandon Smith off the hook for a lost fumble at the Green Bay 10. Clemens, competing with Austin Davis to be Bradfords backup, has thrown two interceptions in both preseason games. He was 2 for 11 for 27 yards. Vince Young opened the second half at quarterback for Green Bay and was 5 for 29 for 26 yards. Will Witherspoon started at outside linebacker for the Rams ahead of Jo-Lonn Dunbar, who is suspended the first four games for violating the NFLs substance abuse policy. Dunbar saw his first action in the second quarter. PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins spot in the post-season is assured. The Phoenix Coyotes are living much more dangerously. For long stretches during Phoenixs 3-2 win on Tuesday night, it certainly looked like the other way around. Pouncing on a series of sloppy mistakes by the suddenly erratic Penguins, the Coyotes picked up two vital points in the chase for the eighth-seed in the Western Conference playoffs. Thomas Greiss stopped 23 shots -- including all 15 he faced over the final two periods -- and received plenty of help as Phoenix rebounded a night after losing starting goaltender Mike Smith indefinitely with a right leg injury in a loss to the New York Rangers on Monday. David Moss, Antoine Vermette and Mikkel Boedker scored for the Coyotes, who never trailed while dropping the Metropolitan Division-leading Penguins to just 6-6-2 since the Olympic break. "It gives confidence that if you can win in Pittsburgh you can win anywhere," Phoenix forward Shane Doan said. Jussi Jokinen and Taylor Pyatt scored for the Penguins. Marc-Andre Fleury made 26 saves, but the Penguins failed to clinch a playoff berth and looked lifeless at times without centre Evgeni Malkin, who is out 2-3 weeks after hurting his foot in a loss to St. Louis on Sunday. While hes expected by the end of the regular season, his absence is just the latest setback in a season in which Pittsburgh has lost over 400 man games due to injuries. It didnt seem to bother the Penguins as they built a seemingly insurmountable division lead. Coach Dan Bylsma isnt sure now is the time to start throwing around blame. "I dont think injuries had anything to do with today or what you saw on the ice," he said. More disconcerting for Pittsburgh is its lack of focus. The Penguins held a brief players only meeting after the game and cancelled a scheduled practice on Wednesday. "I dont think theres anyone feeling sorry for us, but that still doesnt allow us not to have the right type of effort and work ethic," centre Sidney Crosby said. Phoenixs play had a little bit to do with it. If the Coyotes were rattled by the loss of their franchise goaltender, it didnt exactly show. Greiss has been effective when spelling Smith this season, though he wasnt sharp while allowing the Rangers to steal two points Monday by rallying for an overtime victory after he replaced Smith with 7:32 left in regulation and the Coyotes holding a one-goal lead. No matter. Despite a short turnaround in the midst of a three-game road trip that could shape the final weeks of the regular season, Greiss kept the Penguins in check. "I thought we did a good job of being close to one another," Moss said. "It seemed like if there was a breakdown, there was support. If they had a chance, (Greiss) made a huge save." Whenever Pittsburgh made a mistake deep in its own zone, the Coyotes were there to take advantage. Moss picked up his seventh goal of the year when great forechecking by Martin Hanzal and Brandon McMillan produced a turnover that ended with Moss all alone in front of the Penguins net. Jokinens 18th goal of the season tied it 11:51 into the period, kind of. His wrist shot caromed out of the back of the net so quickly the goal light never came on. Play continued for nearly 3 minutes before a stoppage in play provided time for the goal to be awarded on replay. Vermette put Phoenix back in front with a power-play goal, poking a rebound between Fleurys legs. Pyatt knotted it at 2 with just 4 seconds left in the first by deflecting in Rob Scuderis shot from the point. The back-and-forth play, however, stopped over the final 40 minutes as the Coyotes choked off the Penguins while continuing to effectively counterpunch. Boedker put Phoenix in front to stay 13:18 into the second period by grabbing a rebound in front of the Pittsburgh net and roofing it over Fleurys glove as a penalty to Jokinen expired. NOTES: Injured Penguins defenceman Paul Martin did not skate on Tuesday morning due to an illness. Martin, who has not played since injuring his hand while playing for Team USA in the Winter Olympics, will have an X-ray on Sunday to determine his progress. ... The 34-year old was magnificent in 2013, throwing for just under 2,900 yards despite missing eight games, tossing an impressive 21 touchdowns against just two interceptions, completing 66 per cent of his passes in the process.TORONTO - After auditioning roughly 60 prospects, including nine Canadians, in 11 sessions spanning over nine workout days this spring, the Toronto Raptors are putting the finishing touches on their wish list heading into Thursdays NBA Draft. For most of the last week, Masai Ujiri and his scouting staff have been mulling over 10 targets they anticipate will be available with the 20th overall pick, their first of three selections, hoping to narrow that list down to five by Tuesday. With three days to go, does he have someone in mind? "Hes around like the back here," said the former scout, gesturing to the back of his head just before the Raptors concluded their final pre-draft workout Monday afternoon. "But he hasnt made it to the front yet. Hes working his way." No, Ujiri wont tip his hand, not with so many variables at play. Fourteen teams occupy the 19 slots that precede the Raptors and will determine who is available to them. They have a list of about 13 players that are expected to be off the board by the time Toronto is on the clock. The pick will be Ujiris first as Torontos primary decision maker - the Raptors did not have a selection in last years draft - and should immediately put his keen eye for talent to the test. Since Ujiri took control of the Raptors, a franchise that has mostly been accustomed to selecting in the lottery, he has emphasized the importance of drafting well regardless of where youre situated in both the first and second rounds. For only the third time in franchise history, and first in 12 years, the Raptors are positioned outside the top 19 in the drafts opening round. Although its not an advantageous spot to find cant miss, NBA-ready talent, history has shown it can be done. In 2000, with the 20th overall pick - the teams lowest ever first-round selection - they found one of their best and most reliable contributors in long-time Raptor Morris Peterson. In 2011, then with the Nuggets, Ujiri used the 22nd pick to snag emerging forward Kenneth Faried. As Ujiri knows, the key is preparation aided by a little bit of luck and the subsequent development that is required to turn a late first-round pick into an impact player at the games highest level. "Its a huge bonus," Ujiri said of finding a diamond in the rough on draft night. "You look at the programs that have done well in the NBA, they just strike with picks like that. Its takes constant study, and really knowing players, believing in players and a system." "I think a big thing is you kind of have to be realistic on the expectations of the players," added Dan Tolzman, Torontos director of scouting, who was also a member of Ujiris front office staff in Denver. "I think everyone wants to find those diamonds and the guys that will be all-stars and MVPs and this and that but those guys are pretty hard to find outside of the lottery and the top-five even." "So I think the idea is if you can find guys at 20 or 37 or wherever that have careers," he continued, "that are eight-year players and theyre role players on your team and theyre doing good things to help you win, thats a successful draft pick. You might get lucky and hit a guy thats going to be a big time contributor and hes pushing for all-stars and that kind of thing, but thats not really what youre looking for when youre outside of the top-five or the top-10.dddddddddddd" Over the last four weeks, the Raptors brass have seen around a dozen players that figure to be selected in the latter half of the first round, or early in the second. According to team sources, there are roughly five prospects of interest that were either unable or unwilling to come in for a workout. While the workouts are not the be all and end all - the team has scouted them all in live action - they can go a long way in getting the coaching staff and trainers on board with a potential pick. Should a player fall to them unexpectedly, Ujiri will keep his options open and hasnt ruled out the possibility of trading up, if the price is right. Still, the focus is on making their make at 20. "Those trades and talks, people dont understand," said the Raptors GM. "We talk about like maybe 100 trades and then two happen. Thats the nature of our business. We will be aggressive but our energy is focused on 20, rather than wasting our time on [something else]." In addition to their first-round pick, the Raptors also own a pair of second rounders, 37 and 59 - the second to last pick in the draft. Regardless of whether or not theyre able to address their needs in the draft, Ujiri has prioritized his offseason to-do list. "We need a big wing at the three position," he said. "We [also] need some kind of shot blocking big. We have good, skilled bigs, we have a shooting big, we have a big down low, but we want to figure out how we can protect the rim a little bit. That may come now, it may come later but its something we know we need on our roster. So those two positions look like something we need.anged. "Were going full force after Kyle Lowry," Ujiri said, speaking of the teams coveted free agent point guard. "And if theres a talented point guard in the draft we know that its going to be tough to come and contribute to where our team is off the bat, but well go for talent in the draft. But Kyle Lowry is our target and well try to get that done." In just over a week, the Raptors - and other teams for that matter - can begin negotiating with Lowry, unable to officially sign him or announce a deal until the moratorium period ends on July 10. Until then the focus will be on the draft, one of the most chaotic events on the basketball calendar and an invaluable opportunity to add young talent, provided youre well prepared for it. The Raptors have done their homework. "I was walking into the conference room where our guys were meeting and I was like okay, no news that will throw me off right now," Ujiri joked. "Because you know its going to keep coming. There will be something tonight and something else tomorrow morning. Thats just the nature of the draft. I heard something yesterday that threw us off a little bit. But it will keep coming and coming and coming until that last minute. Thats the joy of it, I mean you love it. Thats why we do it. There is always action. As long as we come out on top, then were fine." ZURICH, Switzerland -- Tiny Cape Verde, the feel-good story of African football this year, was thrown out of the final World Cup qualifying playoffs after FIFA ruled Thursday that the island nation fielded an ineligible player in a decisive qualifying win over Tunisia. Tunisia, now without a coach after Nabil Maaloul quit and criticized his players following the countrys apparent failure, was instead awarded a 3-0 victory by forfeit and reinstated to Africas 10-team playoffs, which will be drawn on Monday and start next month. Cape Verde ironically benefited from ineligible player sanctions against Equatorial Guinea earlier in qualifying to have the chance to overtake Tunisia, but was found guilty by FIFAs disciplinary committee of using suspended defender Fernando Varela in its 2-0 win in Rades on Saturday in the decisive final round of group games. That saw the Cape Verdeans move ahead of then-leader Tunisia to win the group. Africas five representatives in Brazil next year will be decided in the playoffs. Cape Verde was looking to reach the World Cup for the first time. FIFA said Varela was ineligible because he had not fully served a four-game ban for a red card in a qualifier in March, which was also one of two games Cape Verde was awarded 3-0 by FIFA because of Equatorial Guineas ineligible player. Tunisia complained formally to FIFA earlier Thursday over Varelas participation and the Cape Verdean Football Federation was stripped of the win and its playoff place and fined 6,000 Swiss francs ($6,447), FIFA said. The federation can appeal the decision. A country with only half a million people and limited football resources, Cape Verde won over many fans this year after it qualified for the African Cup for the first time in its history and surprised by reaching the quarterfinals before losing to Ghana. However, it became the seventh country in Africas beleaguered World Cup qualifying competition to be sanctioned by FIFA for fielding an ineligible player, with Ethiopia, Togo, Sudan, Burkina Faso and Gabon all also forfeiting games. The disciplinary case against Cape Verde delayed FIFAs publishing of its latest monthly world rankings by several hours Thursday. The rankings will be used to decide which five African teams are seeded for next weeks playoff draw. Tunisia will now join Ivory Coast, Ghana, Algeria and Nigeria as the five seeded teams in the draw. Egypt, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Senegal and Ethiopia will be unseeded. Maaloul , theTunisia coach, had apologized and resigned following the 2-0 home loss to Cape Verde, when the Tunisian fans booed their own team. "My players were totally hopeless," Maaloul said. ouston (4.0 per cent) on Nov. 1.Hornets: Forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, who had missed the last

Its a case of same again for Vancouver Whitecaps. After a successful switch in formation for last weeks home win over Houston Dynamo, Caps head coach Carl Robinson is expected to keep the same lineup for their match against Colorado Rapids at BC Place (Saturday at 3:30pm pt live on CTV BC). We have seen many good qualities from Robinson in his opening months as a rookie head coach, the latest being just last week when he showed a willingness to change. The Whitecaps had played his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation in the opening three matches, but needed to find a way to get the best out of forward Kenny Miller and also Chilean midfielder Pedro Morales. So Robinson made a switch, and the diamond midfield worked well as the Whitecaps won 2-1 against the Dynamo to keep their unbeaten start to the season alive. Theres little doubt about the star of the show last week - Morales was magnificent, especially in the first half. The Designated Player was everywhere, making the most of the freedom afforded him as a central attacking midfielder, showcasing his full range of ability, highlighted by his sublime passing. A cross-field ball driven between three Houston players was the top moment for me, but his first-time cross to the head of Andy OBrien, who then set up Jordan Harvey for the first goal, was very close behind. Morales is a difference maker that the Whitecaps have been craving for some time. He excites the crowd and makes those around him more effective. His influence on games will be key to deciding how successful the Whitecaps will be this season. Another big factor will be the depth of the Caps squad. They have assembled a quality group of players that gives Robinson plenty of options and will be extremely valuable as the season progresses. It also gives him the flexibility to change both personnel and formation within games, something he has already shown he is not afraid to do. One of the positives of the 4-4-2 diamond is that Darren Mattocks and Kenny Miller are both able to play in their favoured positions up front. Miller was less effective when playing wide as one of the three attacking midfielders in a 4-2-3-1, but his experience alongside the youth of Mattocks is important for the Whitecaps and against Houston, the partnership worked well. Other positives last week included a strong performance from goalkeeper David Ousted, more excellent work from young Argentine Matias Laba in his role as a defensive midfield destroyer, and solid displays from both fullbacks Jordan Harvey and Steven Beitashour. Everything seemed to work against Houston. Now the Whitecaps look for similar success against a Colorado side that is 1-1-1 through its first three matches. They have scored five goals, but all of them have been a result of penalties, four scored by Vincente Sanchez, and one rebound after Deshorn Brown saw his spot kick initially saved. Being awarded five penalties in just three games sets a new MLS record, but finishing chances from the run of play is something the Rapids have been struggling with through the first three matches (1-1 at New York, 2-0 win home to Portland, 3-2 loss home to Kansas City). Colorado are expected to play a 4-2-3-1 formation, but Pablo Mastroenis team will be missing some key pieces in Vancouver. Former Toronto FC defender Marvell Wynne is suspended after a sending off in the loss at home to Sporting Kansas City a week ago, regular left back Chris Klute is injured, and there is also a question mark about whether veteran players such as Sanchez and Edson Buddle will play on the BC Place turf. Colorado finished three points ahead of Vancouver last season, beating the Caps to the final playoff spot in the Western Conference, although the Rapids exited at the first hurdle, losing their Knockout Round match against Seattle, 2-0. The Rapids have kept many of the same players who got them to the postseason. Spanish defensive midfielder Jose Mari is one of the new names likely to play in Vancouver as he returns from a one-match suspension picked up in just his second game in MLS as the Rapids beat Portland 2-0 at home a fortnight ago. Thomas Piermayr could make his MLS debut in defence after signing with the Rapids this week following a trial spell with the club. While most of the players are the same, there is, of course, a new coach. Mastroeni had a long and successful MLS career as a player and is now embarking on a new challenge. With two rookie coaches on the sidelines at BC Place, it will be an interesting tactical battle. The Whitecaps have equaled their best start to a season since joining Major League Soccer with eight points from their opening four matches, a win against Colorado would set a new high standard, and also lay a strong foundation ahead of back-to-back matches against LA Galaxy. But Walkers three-point play and back-to-back baskets by Jefferson pushed the Hornets lead back to 94-85 with 1:19 left.We just had to get some stops, said Jefferson, who also had 14 rebounds as Charlotte posted back-to-back wins for the second time this season. We knew they could get hot fast. We just had to step up our defence. This is two games in a row that weve been able to close it out. I was thinking too much in the first half. I think they know that the way they played tonight was a byproduct of how theyve practiced. You know, after 20 games, theres a lot of groups that dont want to practice three times. They just want to play the games. But our guys were good. They had good practices, and hopefully thatll set a tone for this next stretch of games. — Hornets coach Steve Clifford.IN THE DOG HOUSERookie guard P.J. Chicoutimis offence exploded

ST. LOUIS -- Alex Ovechkin took his place in the NHL record book and helped the Washington Capitals keep pace in the playoff race. Ovechkin became the 11th player in NHL history to score 50 more goals in a season five times and added two assists as the Capitals beat the slumping St. Louis Blues 4-1 on Tuesday night. The two points gave the Capitals 85, four behind Columbus for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Both the Blue Jackets and Capitals have three games left. "We talked this morning about all we can do is control our situation," Washington coach Adam Oates said. "Try and focus on tonight, get a win and see what happens tomorrow." The Blues clinched a playoff spot in the Western Conference a while ago, but their hopes of a Presidents Trophy are fading. Maxim Lapierre had the only goal for St. Louis, which has lost a season-high three straight. The Blues have been outscored 12-3 during the losing streak. St. Louis has scored two or fewer goals in nine of its last 11 games. "I thought the first period we were really good," St. Louis coach Ken Hitchcock said. "When we got down 3-1, we just seemed to lose our energy." Hitchcock said the Blues scoring problems are more than just the top lines not delivering. "I think its across the board," Hitchcock said. "When youre not scoring, you need to shoot, but its more the execution after we got down." Nicklas Backstrom scored twice and Mikhail Grabovski added another goal for the Capitals. Braden Holtby made 28 saves after he started over Jaroslav Halak, who played 40 games and recorded 24 wins for the Blues this season. Holtby also beat the Blues 4-1 on Nov. 17. "We got fortunate in some places, a broken stick on a wide-open shot and a few others where they just missed, but I think that was a credit to us pressuring them on those scoring chances," Holtby said. "Its a game of those little things and tonight we did that." Holtby said the Capitals have done what they had to do the last few games. "I think weve done a pretty good job of staying calm and just playing our game the last couple," Holtby said. "Its hard, its a tough thing, but we can only control what we can control now." Ovechkin, who added an assist, beat Ryan Miller with a one-timer from the left circle at 17:54 of the first period for his 50th goal overall and 23rd on the power play, both league highs. It is Ovechkins first 50-goal campaign since 2009-10 when he scored 50. His single-season high is 65 in the 2007-08 season. "It means a lot," Ovechkin said. "Thats a big number, and its going to be there my whole life." After Lapierre tied the game at 2:39 of the second period, Grabovski gave the Capitals the lead for good when he beat Miller with a slap shot from the left circle at 8:52 of the period. Ovechkin then gave Washington some insurance when he broke in down the right wing and fed Backstrom in the slot. Backstrom put it past Miller with 1:10 left in the second period to make it 3-1. "It was a great feed again," Backstrom said. "That was a seam pass there and that defenceman gave me a little room, so you have to take advantage of that." Washington began the third period on a power play and Backstrom put the game out of reach when he scored 16 seconds into the period. NOTES: Ovechkin is tied with Pavel Bure, Phil Esposito, Bobby Hull, Brett Hull and Steve Yzerman with five seasons of 50 or more goals. Mike Bossy and Wayne Gretzky accomplished that nine times, and Marcel Dionne, Guy Lafleur and Mario Lemieux had six such seasons. ... Alexander Steen returned to the Blues lineup after missing the last three games. ... Tuesday marked the first time the Capitals have been in St. Louis since Dec. 1, 2010, when they also beat the Blues 4-1.
